Great review man! I really appreciate that you drop the history of the games and consoles in your reviews. Very interesting. Keep up the excellent work! Thanks!
I love the Sega Saturn; It's one of my favorite game consoles. In fact, I just love Sega consoles because the games on the Genesis, Saturn, and the Dreamcast are awesome, from Sonic to Virtua Fighter to Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. So many games, so much nostalgia...
Thanks for finally reviewing the Sega Saturn. I know I have asked you quite a few times to review it. Great review and thanks because the Saturn is my favorite system of all time.
I like the Saturn, haven't had one problem with it except space on the internal ram. But with my gameshark cart I have pleanty of space. Great review John
Great review John!! X Men vs Street Fighter is one of my favorite games! I never owned a Sega Saturn when I was younger thats why I was so excited when I got one back in September. def one of my favorite systems!
I love watching your videos for the history part if the consoles/games. I always thought that the dreamcast was the first console to go online. Is Saturn the first then, or was there something before it?
Great review and console. I have two Saturns and many games. The Saturn was my first Sega console. Sega really should have encouraged more porting of the great Japanese games that were not made available to the US market.
The Saturn was definitely underrated. Sega was really struggling to make sales. The bundles were crazy. I got mine when it was $199 for the system with Daytona, Virtua Fighter 2, and Virtua Cop included. That's unheard of today. Dynamite Deka/Die Hard Arcade was also a fantastic game. Probably as close to a 32-bit Streets of Rage as we'll ever get.
Make sure that the laser lens is properly imbedded in the disc drive (and not loose and shaking around) when you get it. I had to do lots of surgery on my old Saturn because of that. Other than that you will have lots of fun playing it.
I had one as a child, had over 10 games I can't remember all of them, just my favorites, I was 6-7 at the time, 21 now just to give y'all an idea how long ago that was. It had been taken away from me for a really stupid reason, and ended up sold by a person we lived with, along with all the games, extra controllers, and accessories (like a game genie) it was up until a few months ago I bought one for $60 (a steal in my book) and im hoping to restart my collection and relive that nostalgia.
Sakura Taisen (Sakura Wars) was introduced on Saturn. The first 2 games were released in 1996 and 1998 with the 3rd and 4th games released on Dreamcast. Only the 5th game was on PS2 in 2005 and saw American release in 2010 (along with Wii in America and Europe). First game got a PS2 remake and the 3rd was ported to PS2. I got Sakura Taisen 1&2 for PSP, which is a port of the first 2 games in all their Saturn glory, though modified for the PSP's widescreen display.
What makes the controller better than the Play Station controller for those fighting games? Two of the attack buttons can be pressed quicker on the PS1 controller and it's probably easier to do combos.
Hey I wanna jump in on a Saturn so what is essential for me to get to pretty much play mostly everything? Can I get a certain cartridge to install that handles all? Do I need specific cartridges for different games? Thanks.
I had one, but not anymore. I've played with it Virtua Fighter, Detona USA, and a very few other titles including demos that I can't remember well now. good review as usual by the way.
sega should not have rushed it. virtua fighter 1 seemed like direct port with graphic update. people will compare when buying. since 32x has just come out. sega should have taken time perfecting saturn and made it backward compatible to genesis since it already had a cartridge's slot. imagina playing 32x and mega drive games on it also. anyone who owned lots of genesis games wud have bought it sooner or later. they rushed it and it back fired. not forgetting top retail shops didnt want to sell saturn after how they moved launch dates 4 months ahead without telling them. not forgetting ego not trying to get more third party support. playstation won coz of third party support. final fantasy 7 was huge on playstation electronic arts was massive back then with need for speeds series and others all these werent on saturn.
I'm confused now, is the guy with the hat the same guy from the video where they review the 3D control pad for sega genesis? Or am I watching two different people?
Awesome video. :D A couple of things I'd like to point out, though: First, the Netlink didn't technically allow for "online" gameplay -- the way it worked is actually via a phone connection and not the internet. Basically, you'd get your friend's phone number and dial it into your Netlink while he set his to "wait" -- once he received the "call" you were connected and could play together. This means it still works today! You COULD browse the internet with it, though. Still can, actually.
There were three companies which had rights to make their own versions of Saturn due to their cooperation in the development of components for the system, however only JVC & Hitachi took up the option. I forget what the name of the third company is. The NetLink modem did not allow online play. It allowed players to play with/against each other through the phone line by dialling each other. It was not like a modern "online" gaming experience. Also, web browsing software was available.
@o0MrCheesy0o Saga, panzer dragoon saga. only 18,000 were made in the US (6k 1st edition, 12k re-release. dont know if you can actually tell the difference).
Great review. Thanks for sharing. I am interested in getting myself a Japanese Saturn. Can anyone tell me if all the Japanese Saturns are V-Saturns? If I understand correctly from this video, Sega Saturn was never released in Japan, so there is not any Japanese -Sega- Saturn in existence, correct? Also, are all the Japanese Saturns grey in color? There is no black model of the Japanese Saturn?
Love the Saturn Man! Great Video thats really neat you have the victor saturn. Great work man I also really liked the sea monkey Review on your other channel.
Why Can't Sega Release some of their Saturn Titles for PSN or XBLA?? I love the Sega Saturn games I had back in 1996 and I would love to revisit them again! Mr. Bones, Baku Baku, Three Dirty Dwarves, Man I hope they release them for download.
@iceburg81 Yes, you can use a ST Key, or better yet a 4 in 1 Pro Action replay. The PAR 4 in 1 also works as a back memory storage, a 4 MB cart to play the Marvel VS games with other Capcom games and a game genie so to speak. I would mess with any other off brand carts though.
In terms of saturn fighters, Fighters Megamix is one of the best, all the elements it combines is very impressive, highly recommend checking out or Gamester81, doing a future review of
Actually Project Mars is the codename for the 32X , also the 32X was originally Project Jupiter (it wasn't renamed to Project Uranus) and it was intented to be an upgraded version of the Genesis
back in the 90s when i had a saturn, i owned: daytona usa, virtua fighter 1 and 2, panzer dragoon, bug!, clockwork knight, Fighters Megamix, nights into dreams, NHL all star hockey, resident evil, theme park, virtua cop, and wipe out.
good to see some saturn love. just to let you know, the saturn you showed in the video is a later version. i own an early version, complete with the old style controller. it isn't easy to use lol. and check out the original panzer dragoon for saturn, its a personal favorite of mine, has a great audio track. if you want a could post up a video reply!
I remember my uncle gave me his Saturn around 2001-2002. I think I had Daytona, Nights but it was broken, and Virtual Cop. I think I had a few more games but I can't remember. It got thrown out in a move though. Nowadays these are hard to find for a good price.
Great review John. Would love to play my Saturn which I brought almost a year ago but unfortunately the controller is broken. I could buy a new one but they are very costly here in the UK and the fact that the 3rd party pads are pretty bad.
I'm thinking buying a Japanese Saturn so I can play 4MB games(X-MEN VS STREETFIGHTER won't even run half the time on my US Saturn even with the PAR 5-1 cartridge.) Which one should I buy, a grey 1st gen or white latter gen? BTW, SEGA has filed a new trademark "KIDSPAD" which looks to be a family friendly i-Pad. PM me for details.
i remember when i got one when i was a kid around when it came out makes me feel old when ya call it retro xD. i miss that racing game and virtual fighter i think it was those were the games that came with the one i got lol
I loved this system I bought the whole online package when they started to cancel the system came with keyboard and the net link and a game for playing online even came with an adapter for use with a regular keyboard or mouse
Do you know of a robot fighting game on the Saturn? I can't remember the name. It's not Virtual On. You can customize your robot with an array of weapons. It played similar to Virtual On when comparing the 3D perspective. Another thing I remember was that the robots were more of a chibi version of the Virtual On mechs. IT's all I remember but I know it was fun. My cousin owned a SS and he had that and an interactive haunted house game. Both names slip my mind.
that memory expansions bring me on one idea unless it was still/is imposssible but who knpws,i had readed that the multicore proccesor had to share the same memory bit bus so it dit,nt had speed up anything, but what if it was possible to expand that memory bus with that memory expansion, to let one part of the proccesor use most part of the central bit bus memory and the other proccesor use the memory expansion instead,in order to overcome that memory bus limmitation in order to speed things up
12 (Almost 13) Years later on Replying to this Comment: Now it's PS5 and Xbox Anaconda since it's November 2024 and almost 2025. My Childhood and Adolescence were GameCube, PS2, Xbox, Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 (I'm a 2000's Kid btw) I'm one of the Gen Z that was Old enough to remember playing the Nintendo 64, PS1, and Game Boy Color
The only good games that I see for the Sega Saturn right now today are Capcom's fighting games, Sega's fighting games, Dead or Alive, Sonic Jam and Sonic R. Back when I was kid, I didn't have many good games for the Saturn. Looking back at the Saturn now, I missed out on lot of great games just by looking at the Saturn's huge library full of Saturn games on Wikipedia.
I need to get a working Saturn; I bought one awhile back, but it won't play games, and resets every time I turn it off, even though it's got a brand new battery. Oh well, haha. Great video!
I do agree with you. It was much bigger in Japan. I lived there during that time and all my Japanese friends were all into this. I have been trying to buy one lately, but I would probably get a Japanese one. From my experience, the best games for it in my opinion are: Virtual On, Marvel Super Hero's, Virtual Cop, Daytona USA, Fighters Megamix, and Fighting Vipers. Not sure if any of them were released to the US version though.
Should point out that the Action Replay Import cart can bugger your Saturn's cart port because of the sharper cart inserts. It buggered mine, so I had to get a new one. T.T
hey gamester you should check out king of fighters 95 for it,it was the closest arcade port in the home systems, almost as good as the neogeo cart version.
Nice review! Saturn is still my favor system of ALL time for it got the best collection of 2D fighter and BEST controller for fighting games! Now comparing the Saturn 2D games to the PS1 3D games, Saturn 2D games still looks amazing and PS1 3D games now looks like card boards. I just wish Bernie Stolar was not in charge and there were more Japanese games released in the US; the life of Sega Saturn may be a different story in America.
Back in the day I remember the day The Saturn came out. I was working at Sears in college, & bought one, but I was dissapointed with it, one cause the 3D games didn't look great esepcially when compared to the cleaner Playstation console which I traded it in for. I would buy another one as I love 2D shooters, & sidescrollers, but there isn't any I can think of that I would buy the console for again for so instead I bought a Neo GEO CD system, been happy with that.
Anyone think I should pick up a Saturn? As for my Sega systems, I have two Nomads, a Genesis, and a Dreamcast so far. If there's something I should keep watch for when buying one, please tell me.
i really tried to get into saturn.but when i saw that many games, arcade ports especially, were also on the psx, with better speed, igave up.the only saturn exclusive games i have and like are guardian heroes, panzer dragon, fighters megamix and the last chapter of zero divide.if somebody can suggest me any must-have saturn exclusive(that is NOT an rpg)let me know
I still remember when i was a kid and my neighbour just arrived from work and asked me to go with him to buy a Sega Saturn man i was a kid in a candy store consoles everywhere and like a boss he goes directly to the Saturn section grabs a console Bundle and says lets go home!, i costed alot back then i remember games like Nights, Sega Rally, Daytona, Virtua Fighter,Virtuacop with the blue pistol :D , aliens, Dragonball... good old times.
I don't remember who was exactly, but I think that was hobbies consolas who said that the Sega Saturn ws the best game console ever made, because of it technology. I'm complete agreed with that and is a shame that the Saturn never could enter into the consoles fight in that time, it really had a great potential.
Yeah, those are really good places but even Saturns are harder to find. I just found a blue N64 controller for $3 at a goodwill as well. But Saturn games I have never seen in a store like that, I just plan on buying on eBay. You can find decent deals on there if you're patient and know what is cheap and what isn't.
Hey John, your halfway there. You have Duke Nukem 3D. You need another Lobotomy Software game (Quake or Powerslave) for the game save in your Saturn. And, five more Saturn controllers, a Saturn Multitap, and six buddies to play Duke Nukem 3D's awesome hidden game Death Tank Zwei. One of the best party frag games ever made!!!
I still have my Saturn. Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the best games ever made and I refuse to get rid of the system just so I can keep playing that classic.
X-Men vs Street Fighter and Radiant Silvergun for the SS are two of my favorite arcade-to-home ports of all time. They still look and play awesome.
Great review John
i dont understand the people that 'dislike' these videos! great vid again gamester- always looking forward to them
This, Virtual On, and Guardian Heroes are my top 3 for this system. I really love the Saturn and definitely is underrated.
Great review John!! X Men vs Street Fighter is one of my favorite games! I never owned a Sega Saturn when I was younger thats why I was so excited when I got one back in September. def one of my favorite systems!
@o0MrCheesy0o It's actually only Panzer Dragoon Saga that is the rare game. Sorry I should have clarified it in the video.
Awesome review. Really liked this system back in the day, especially the Panzer Dragoon games.
I love watching your videos for the history part if the consoles/games.
I always thought that the dreamcast was the first console to go online. Is Saturn the first then, or was there something before it?
Couple of my favorite Saturn games that I have are Guardian Heroes and Dragon Force... SOOOO much fun! Nice review,
The Saturn was the first console I ever owned. Loved playing the arcade ports. And Bug. And the Clockwork Knight games. And Astal.

Gamester81 video game historian! I passed up on a nice condition Saturn for $30 a few months ago and kind of regret it
sega should not have rushed it. virtua fighter 1 seemed like direct port with graphic update. people will compare when buying. since 32x has just come out. sega should have taken time perfecting saturn and made it backward compatible to genesis since it already had a cartridge's slot. imagina playing 32x and mega drive games on it also. anyone who owned lots of genesis games wud have bought it sooner or later. they rushed it and it back fired. not forgetting top retail shops didnt want to sell saturn after how they moved launch dates 4 months ahead without telling them. not forgetting ego not trying to get more third party support. playstation won coz of third party support. final fantasy 7 was huge on playstation electronic arts was massive back then with need for speeds series and others all these werent on saturn.
I saw one of those JVC Saturns for the first time at a new shop I discovered and was wondering what the hell it was-- thanks for the info Gamster!
I'm confused now, is the guy with the hat the same guy from the video where they review the 3D control pad for sega genesis? Or am I watching two different people?

Hey Gamster, great video! I love SEGA and I just bought Panzer Dragoon for the Saturn yesterday! (I bought Shenmue today - oh yeeeeeah.)
My Sega Saturn's buttons are both shaped very different than that one.
Is it just newer models?

Great video again John keep up the great work !
Actually Project Mars is the codename for the 32X , also the 32X was originally Project Jupiter (it wasn't renamed to Project Uranus) and it was intented to be an upgraded version of the Genesis
great vid! but wow i miss the old kb toys store they had i went into there as a kid and just fell in love with it lol
back in the 90s when i had a saturn, i owned: daytona usa, virtua fighter 1 and 2, panzer dragoon, bug!, clockwork knight, Fighters Megamix, nights into dreams, NHL all star hockey, resident evil, theme park, virtua cop, and wipe out.
Something you didn't mention is that the hole in the back of the Saturn would also hold the battery for the internal memory.

I thought a prototype could have got out to the public and Gamerster81 seems to be able to obtain rare systems.

@Gamester81 A quick question. Is it worth it to get a Sega Saturn for $50 dollars used? or I should find another one for less than $35?
i remember when i got one when i was a kid around when it came out makes me feel old when ya call it retro xD. i miss that racing game and virtual fighter i think it was those were the games that came with the one i got lol
sold it for 10 dollars in a garage sale. That is how much I loved this system. I still play my Dreamcast though.
great review! i'm a big fan of the sega saturn and this was spot on! good choice in games, duke nukem forever is gonna be awesome!
I loved this system I bought the whole online package when they started to cancel the system came with keyboard and the net link and a game for playing online even came with an adapter for use with a regular keyboard or mouse
Gamerster81, do you own Sega Neptune System and if you do could you do a video on it?
Do you know of a robot fighting game on the Saturn? I can't remember the name. It's not Virtual On. You can customize your robot with an array of weapons. Mega Drive, Saturn, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2.. My childhood and teen years.. Now its ps3 and xbox 360.. So many great consoles!

Nice review, very educational and informative I thought.

Very awesome video, John!!
excellent review Jon.
Great review. Lol, I totally forgot, that I have the Video-CD-Card in my Saturn. Thanks so much for reminding me. Now I only need some video CDs. ;-)
haven't played it but I've heard that despite being really short Panzer dragoon saga is one of the best written SCIFI RPGs in existence.
I recently found mine in the attic. :D
Same lol
Great informative review!
I need to get a working Saturn; I bought one awhile back, but it won't play games, and resets every time I turn it off, even though it's got a brand new battery. Oh well, haha.
Great video!
Great review, keep up the good work!
I have a complete Saturn collection ;) nerding it up
i love my Sega with the CD attachment my fav game was the one were you were pencil and the Dolphen game too
Alright, thanks for the heads up! I will keep your word in mind. I might just buy one!
Awesome video ♥️
@Gamester81 isn't radiant silver gone another ultra rare game?
hey gamester you should check out king of fighters 95 for it,it was the closest arcade port in the home systems, almost as good as the neogeo cart version.

@MrCumstein there was a panzer dragoon rpg it was called panzer dragoon saga.
You would make a great school teacher, Gamester81.
Back in the day I remember the day The Saturn came out. It seems to me that it is better to get a Japanese Sega Saturn. Would it fry your system to plug a NTSC-J system into US equipment?
dude do you need a 3d controller? because i have one but i dont have a saturn
The SATURN made home versions of fighters and shmups wonderful!
Anyone think I should pick up a Saturn? As for my Sega systems, I have two Nomads, a Genesis, and a Dreamcast so far. If there's something I should keep watch for when buying one, please tell me.
i really tried to get into saturn.but when i saw that many games, arcade ports especially, were also on the psx, with better speed, igave up.the only saturn exclusive games i have and like are guardian heroes, panzer dragon, fighters megamix and the last chapter of zero divide.if somebody can suggest me any must-have saturn exclusive(that is NOT an rpg)let me know
That's awesome! I never realized the Saturn was released on my birthday! Now I have a reason to get one. :D
i have a penzer dragoon demo disc, are they rare?
I still remember when i was a kid and my neighbour just arrived from work and asked me to go with him to buy a Sega Saturn man i was a kid in a candy store consoles everywhere and like a boss he goes directly to the Saturn section grabs a console Bundle and says lets go home!, i costed alot back then i remember games like Nights, Sega Rally, Daytona, Virtua Fighter,Virtuacop with the blue pistol :D , aliens, Dragonball... good old times.

Watching this reminds me of the Dreamcast i once had. too bad it was discontinued a tad too early. Could've been great.
@Gamester81 i have it for the playstation does that mean its rare
@Gamester81
Great review, I almost bought a Saturn but decided not too, I wanted to concentrate on my snes first.
I still have my Saturn. Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the best games ever made and I refuse to get rid of the system just so I can keep playing that classic.
Do u have Double Switch for the sega saturn or sega cd?
