    I cant name a favorite part. You guys covered so much important ground. The book that was shown in part one I think is going to be a must get. My fences are already 6-7 feet cause of mountain lions that use the creek through the property as a freeway. Since I raised the fence hasnt been a problem. I can see right now though I am going to need to section portions of the property within the already fenced area but im going to keep it at about 4 feet and let the emus sort themselves out, or at least hope it works like that or give me a general idea of who to separate. The 3 part series really is the best Ive seen yet on youtube and I have seen a lot. Im sure I missed the giveaway which is no bother, you wanted feedback so im just dishing it out. Like I said in my other comment might want to either order eggs or chicks if its safe for them to ship to Oregon. Like I said I got 4 in the incubator, but we will see. Thanks for the video you dont know how much help your videos here on Emus have been. As I said I think the book is a must get. Contact the publisher you have 7.3k views on this video and 1.59k subs. Ask them for a promo code so you get some kind of kick back for promoting their stuff. ;) 5% off, 10% off... We need every discount we can get in "this" economy. Thanks again!

    The whole series was rich with information! EVERYBODY says "pairs only" but you've proved that as long as you are attentive to the body language and demeanor of the emus that are together, and make adjustments if needed that it is do-able! That answered one of my biggest questions, and was my favorite bit of information.

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  3 роки тому +1

      We have heard of this before but luckily haven't had it happen here. I have heard it can be a nutritional deficiency in the goats that causes this. I would look at upping their available minerals and see if that helps.

    • @aFarmingArtist
      @aFarmingArtist 3 роки тому

      @@WhitetailHollowFarms thank you for the suggestion. They free-range in pasture but are also given alfalfa pellets and have a mineral block as well as a salt one. It's just one particular doe that really goes after them no matter what she has, and once she models that behavior the others start doing that as well. She goes to the sale as soon as she kids and I'm going to try reintroduction.

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  3 роки тому +1

      @@aFarmingArtist you might consider switching to loose minerals for the goats. Blocks usually aren't recommended for goats. Goats generally can't lick enough of the block to get enough minerals. Plus the loose ones are usually higher in the minerals that they need.

      We keep on hand Rooster Boosters Poultry Cell for birds/chicks that need an extra energy boost - amzn.to/3X7nHH5

They also have access to any of the minerals we have in the pasture for our goats and cattle (free-choice kelp, mineral salt, and mineral mix) but rarely have we ever seen them in them. Yes the males do seem to make better pets. All emus are different, but from our experience the males are much more relaxed. The females aren't nearly as friendly as the males and I'm sure that has something to do with them being territorial and sometimes sassy!

    Our family has alpha gal allergies. How many Emus would a family want to raise if they were going to grow them for meat? Also would you recommend a female or male bird as a meat bird?

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  2 роки тому

      Honestly, we have never harvested one of our emu for meat. We raise them for breeding and guardian purposes. As far as your question on how many to raise for meat, that would depend on a few factors. From the bit of research we have done, a typical adult emu will only yield on average 25lbs of meat. Depending on how much meat you will want/need, what the average individual in your family will eat per day/week and the number of individuals that are in your family will determine how many emu you will need to raise to provide for your family. Emu are typically harvested around 18 -24 months. As far as temperament, males are typically more docile. Males and females weigh about the same so you would get the same yield. After feeding (2lbs/bird/day), fencing (6' high min), acreage (space to run) & housing (shelter) for that amount of time I would question whether it is financially a good investment for only 25lbs of meat.

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  Рік тому

      An adjacent enclosure where they can see each other is the best solution. Once they are familiar with each other you should be able to do supervised time together. Once they are doing well you can do limited unsupervised time. We still separate our goats and our emus at feeding time as they require different feeds and we don't want our goats eating our emu feed cause it can cause them to bloat.

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  10 місяців тому +1

      If your emu is older (18+ months), you should be able to tell if you have a male or female by the sound they make. A female will have a deep bass-like "boom" and a male will have a grunting sound (we compare it to a chainsaw that doesn't want to start). If they are younger, the only way to determine that would be to DNA them. We use Animal Genetics (.com) to test all of our emu chicks. You can use a blood sample or a feather sample. There are full details on their website, or we have a video here on our channel on how we test chicks.

      @@WhitetailHollowFarms omg I love that. A boom vs a chainsaw that dont want to start. I live in the mountains here in oregon. The sound of a chainsaw not wanting to start is like birds chirping on a warm spring and summer morning. lol Love that description!

    Also do you change the diet as they grow older? Are the winter hardy ?

      We feed a non-GMO chick starter free choice for the first couple months. We change to a pelleted feed around 2 months old. We are in FL so can't really comment on how they would do in areas with hard winters.

    Are emus easy to multiply in short time?

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  2 роки тому +1

      That would depend on what you consider a short time. Female Emu typically don't start laying until they are somewhere between 18 mths to 3 years old. And they have to have a male that is actually breeding them to produce fertile eggs - there is a lot of debate as to whether they will even lay if they haven't been bred - that is a whole other discussion though. In their first laying season, they typically will lay around 20 eggs - not all eggs will hatch. So if you consider 3 years or less a "short time" to possibly double, triple or quadruple your emu mob the answer would be yes - if you are comparing it to chickens, laying at typically 20-30 weeks and hatching those - the answer would be no. Hope this helps.

    My 3 month old emu’s neck swells up after she eats, and she tilts her head back like she’s uncomfortable when it happens. It takes about 5-10 min for the lump to move down her throat, and then she’s fine. Any idea what this could be?

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  2 роки тому

      Sounds like she is eating too fast and the lump is food. Perfectly normal for a juvenile or adult. You could take the food away when you see her doing this and give it back when she as swallowed it all.

      @@WhitetailHollowFarms That’s what I started doing when I noticed it. She was attacked by a hawk when she was little, and I think it stunted her growth a bit. The vet was able to save her, and she’s all healed up now. But I had to keep her inside for a while after that, and she’s still really small for her age. I’m hoping now that she’s back outside in the sun with all the other animals she’ll start growing more. Thank you for the response!

    been watching cog hill farm for a good 4 years and love nugget. as we can afford to have chickens and geese and turkeys to help broaden our son's farm and pet exposure I can't seem to justify the price of an egg that might not hatch above maybe $20 and the cheapest emu eggs I see seem to be the better part of a hundred dollars or better. sure would love us a nugget or even a female

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  2 роки тому

      The prices of both chicks and eggs are very much justified by the amount of work these birds require. We have thousands on thousands of dollars worth of infrastructure into our birds, fencing, hatchery buildings, incubators, barn facilities, feed and not to mention our time invested in them. They are an exotic animal and require a special level of care, so unfortunately in order for farms like ours to stay afloat and continue to do this, we have to charge the prices we do.
      Another note: We would never recommend a single bird, they are a herd or “mob” animal and do much better with a companion.

    do u ship to maryland?

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  10 місяців тому

      Emu chicks cannot be shipped like chicken chicks - their legs are far too fragile to handle that type of trip. They may, however, be transported via an animal transport company. That would have to be arranged with the transporter. We have had a few clients work with Haulin Paws Transport Services, and they did a great job getting our chicks to their new homes.

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  2 роки тому

      If they are raised with them and properly introduced they should do fine with children and other animals. Older emus that haven't been socialized can be standoffish or even aggressive with other animals, however. Be cautious if you are considering older adults and don't know their full history.

    • @WhitetailHollowFarms
      @WhitetailHollowFarms  Рік тому

      We do not ship emu chicks. Their legs are much too fragile to hold up via USPS. We have worked with animal transport companies successfully. However, we do not recommend more than a days travel so they are not stressed if using a transportation company.

      We just sent our last chicks of the year off to a new home, unfortunately most breeders are out of chicks as emu season has pretty much wrapped up now. Nobody will have chicks again until January of next year at the earliest. Follow us on Facebook to keep up to date on when we have chicks and eggs available!
