How old are beets when you put them in the ground?
It depends on the time of year, usually 3-4 weeks.
Been following your page for awhile. Using lots of your information, I have my first planting season is coming up! I'm nervous but excited. Thanks for your content!
You're welcome. Best of luck to you this season!
What's the big bug behind you at 11:11 ?
Did you know that Mokum is a nickname for the Dutch capital Amsterdam? :) That's probably where it got its name from. Nice to have found your channel!
Coast of Maine products are so nice. I wish they were more readily available. Good to know the seedling mix will hold up for soil blocks.
Another great video Mr. Satin! Soil blocks for the win! I used them last season for the first time and holy moly they were the best starts I ever had. Thanks for the videos!
You’re welcome. I have definitely been loving soil blocks too!
Looking forward to them. I will not be using any peat as a matter of principle,
so there will be some fun experimentation to find something that works.
5: 40 in : You could try planting easy to grow Comfrey [Knitbone] along the grass line to minimize incursion.
It also looks great, attracts insects, the leaves are a superfood for Fruit Trees etc. and is also a great source of material for making Organic Tea to fertilize plants.
Quick question: you mentioned when you first build a no till bed, it’s wise to plant shallow growing things? I’m putting in some large beds in spring and kind of need to consider what I can plant right off the bat…
Strawberries work great in new beds . Even if you build the base level out of wood then cover in compost. I have several more new beds this year and will be planting lettuces , spinach, arugula, collards and Chinese Cabbage. All of these do well in new beds.
Lots of options and it depends on what you like to grow, what can sell, how much compost you put down and what your native soil looks like.
Another option that may work good to is if you don’t need one of the new beds until summer is to plant it to a cover crop. I have one planted to vetch. It will fixate nitrogen, add bio mass and organics . Best if it all it will die out in the heat when you plant. Rye grass and crimson clover also work.
Love Soil blocks, Will never go back. Thanks to you Josh
Nice! I love soil blocks!
Loving ALL your videos. Thank you for the incredible content.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
I have not had good luck direct seeding beets will definitely try your way thank you for the information
I planted beets a year ago, and they are coming up all over the yard. I love it. I have dried them, given them to neighbors and the local High S chool culinary class. tonight we are having roasted beets and leeks
Is Johnny's part of Monsanto/Bayer deal?

Hi Mr Sattin and thxs from Belgium for sharing your experience...As always, very interesting!...Have a good day...
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Can You show how/ what stage You harvest red russian kale? How low do You cut it to let it regrow?
???? Great info! Do you heat your tunnels?
Would you mind telling me what video to look at to create my soil for a high tunnel?
Did I see a tear in the plastic behind your shoulder?
What are the amendments you add please.
good job brother..thank you for Planting Tips..nice to see your gardening activities..
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!

When did you switch to Salanova? I thought you had a video a year or two ago where you had reasons for not liking it here in the Triangle and preferred your own custom mix.
I have been growing Salanova since I started farming at home again this year.
@@JoshSattinFarming What was the reason for the switch? I need to make my lettuce seed decision for the garden here in the next couple of weeks and am kind of leaning towards Salanova.
@@rhuffstedtler Better to sell to restaurants.
Thanks for the great video!!! We love beets but just haven't had success with transplants. They never look well rooted. Thanks for the tips. I love how you've drilled down onto just the crops that are profitable.
You're welcome Jonathan! I have really enjoyed only growing a few things. Let's catch up soon!
Detroit is king..😄🇭🇲
Thank you from Kentucky. I always enjoy your videos !
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Those are some beautiful beds Josh. Just need to say too that you do a wonderful job making relevant, interesting and helpful content. When I see one of your videos in my feed I know it’s going to be worth my while. Thanks for all you do. 🥬🥕🥬🥕
Thank you for the kind words! Glad you enjoy the videos.
Just wanted to say thank you for another wonderful informative video ❤️
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Another great video loaded with useful info! Hopefully Santa brings me a soil blocker this Christmas.
Thanks! I hope you get the soil blocker. I love mine.
Also, I love that wide angle shot in the tunnel where all the leading lines point to you. Great album cover image for you! Lol.
Thanks! Yeah, shooting in the tunnels is nice for that reason. Also lots of diffused light!
As you say there are lizards in your nursery, there is one running on the board in the background lol. I love the buffer bed. Hopefully that will help out with the grass seeds.
Haha yeah! I noticed that while I was editing and almost put an arrow or text on the screen.

Thanks for the update Josh! Could I do a temporary hoop house over the winter and then remove the film over the summer? Any recommendations for where to start my research? Thanks! I'm excited about your beneficial hedge row. -Whitney Parchman
Just answered my own question. It might make sense to use a couple caterpillar tunnels instead. Okay, great! Enjoying your Content on Content channel btw. Thanks!
Ok cool. There are so many ways to cover beds. Tunnels are the best for sure. Glad you have been enjoying the other channel. I've been having a lot of fun with it too.
Thanks Josh for your update and advice.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
What’s your source for those large black tarps?

Super!
Can you share your rotation? Do you do it per season or per flip?
Every flip. I don't put the same family of crops in the same bed twice in a row.
Thanks Josh...always love your videos! Concerning direct seeding beets: has anyone gained experience with the new lv-12 roller of the jang? It is for large seeded beets...thanks!
I just got my seed order for spring a couple days ago. Life got in the way and I didn't get a fall garden planted because I thought I was too late. Boy was I wrong. Our weather has been crazy in Tulsa. We'll hit upper 70s again this week. Should be in the 40s at this time of year.
Being in zone 4 I grow baby red russian kale under lights all winter. I think the reason it's not as popular for commercial growers is that it wilts quite fast after harvest. On the other hand it's more delicate and not as tough to chew.
Looking forward to seeing the new hedge, exciting times
Put a few rocks at the bottom of the slope with the landscape fabric, it will stop the water from eroding the soil.
what is your growing zone?
Raleigh, NC Zone 7B
What was the tan coloured material u covered your soil blocks with? Beets were a bust for me last year. So. Going to do them the way you are this year.
Thanks.
Good to see more content, and greenhouses looking great. 👍👍

try sowing radishes!!!
thnx for beet tips!
Oh yeah, I always direct seed radishes.
@@JoshSattinFarming heck yes. I find that they do super well in brand new beds 👍
thank you for all the amazing content - hard to imagine where I’d be without it 🙏🏼
@@jordanwj19 For sure. Radish are always a satisfying crop to grow. You are very welcome. Super glad to hear the content has been useful for you!
Hey bro, I live in Australia, what is that contraption called that makes your soil blocks, thanks in advance 🪱🐝🌈🌙🌞🌧
It's a stand up soil blocker

Curious to know what's your yield per bed for your beets at that spacing?
I have never recorded the yield per bed, but it's a lot.
Can you break apart the beet seed 'clump', maybe with a process similar to threshing and plant them individually? I've wondered if that's possible.
I've never tried it, but i would think the roots would be too fragile.
Hi Josh. I'm so happy you made this video as I've been needing inspiration since everything in the garden is sleeping in this place called 'Winter in Northern California'. I'm gonna work on beets again for this new planting season, hopefully the grasshoppers won't hit again like they did last year. So discouraging. Thanks for all the info you share Josh, I appreciate all the teachings so much. I dream of a green house. Maybe some day. ' ) bonnie
Oh man, yeah grasshoppers can do a lot of damage. I would try and get some insect netting to protect your crops. Tunnels are amazing. Thanks for your kind words and for watching the videos!
I have a section full of perennial grass weeds. I have cardboard, leaves, and hardwood chips. In what order should I put them down now for spring planting?
Grass needs to be covered with a tarp until it is completely dead before building beds. Cardboard, leaves and wood chips are all carbon sources. I would layer either cardboard or leaves with compost. I do not put wood chips in my beds, but do use them in the walkways. Please check out the related videos in the description of this video for more information.
It would be great if you could do a show on soil blocks

Right when you said lizards in the greenhouse I think I saw one run along the baseboard behind you! Lol
Haha yeah! I noticed that while I was editing and almost put an arrow or text on the screen.

Hey Josh! Love your work, your channel has been a great source of information for us in setting up and operating our market garden.
One question: do you soak your beet seeds? If so, how long; if not, why not?
I do not soak any seeds prior to planting. There is no need for what I plant. There are a few crops in very specific situations where it can be beneficial.
