Some parts of this song are taken from Jews holly books, describing tears and miss without Jerusalem. This song was written 3 weeks before it release at 6 days war (1967). So it symbols for us national and religious freedom.

"The Path Guided by Dafa [Great Law]
Though you and I don’t know each other
We both live on the same celestial body
      Our backgrounds differ
Yet with common values of human life
Humankind has reached the final moment in history
Lives are all waiting for the Creator to come to the world
Because of this, I tell you the truth
Do not be dogmatic by following modern notions and conduct
Gods have been choosing lives all along
Amid kindness and evil, you decide for yourself
The path guided by Dafa has no doomsday
      January 2, 2015
      ***
      Why Did You Come Here
All are waiting for the Creator’s salvation at the end times
Before demise comes, the Fa principles that save people are spreading
Yet people chase after fame and gain
What’s acquired in a lifetime’s effort cannot be carried away with you
      Coming and going-you alone
In a busy life you’ve forgotten why you came here
Before descending, most of you were Kings in your heavenly kingdoms
Giving up your divine bodies to save the heavenly beings
Gain in the human world is not important
Connect your divine destiny, remake yourself
Seek the truth, break free from delusion
Fulfill the wish you came with to the world-that’s your great joy
      January 5, 2016"
Master Li Hongzhi (Hong Yin V, from Falun Dafa teachings)

I first heard this song soon after the Six Day War/ I fell in love with the lyrics. Although a Scotsman, I learned the Hebrew Language. I studied a Yeshiva Gadolah in Melbourne; yes with the Hasidim and also at the Adas Yisrael schul. Loved the language, loved the culture and loved the people. My best friend in the Australian Army was a Jewish boy. His parents treated me well and regarded me a son. His sister was drop dead gorgeous but not being Jewish; I wasn't even in the race; but after she married, I was close friends with her and her husband; who was an eminent Doctor....What other profession would a Jewish boy take up. Shalom Michael Chaveer! It has been over 50 years since we kept in touch.

It is now said by Basque historian Alberto Santana that this song is indeed Jewish,
coming from the Jews of Vitoria before they were expelled in medieval times. The
Basques took up the melody and put their own words, It´s sad that Naomi Shemer
      never knew this.

One thing unusual about this song, that struck me in my childhood is the last sentence of the chorus which literally means: 'for to all your songs, Im a violin'.

But as I come to sing to you today
And to adorn crowns to you (i.e. to tell your praise)
I am the smallest of the youngest of your children (i.e. the least worthy of doing so)
And of the last poet (i.e. of all the poets born)
    Ki shemech zorev et ha-sefatayim
    Ke-neshikat saraf
    Im eshkachech Yerushalayim
    Asher kullah zahav
For your name scorches the lips
Like the kiss of a seraf
    If I forget thee, Jerusalem
    Which is all gold...
    Yerushalayim shel zahav
    Ve-shel nehoshet ve-shel or
    Ha-lo le-chol shirayich ani kinnor
Jerusalem of gold, and of bronze, and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs
    Hazarnu el borot ha-mayim
    La-shuk ve-la-kikkar
    Shofar kore be-Har ha-Bayit
    Ba-ir ha-attikah
We have returned to the cisterns
To the market and to the market-place
A ram's horn (shofar) calls out (i.e. is being heard) on the Temple Mount
    In the Old City
    U-va-me'arot asher ba-selah
    Alfey shemashot zorhot
    Nashuv nered el Yam ha-Melah
    Be-derech Yericho
And in the caves in the mountain
    Thousands of suns shine -
We will once again descend to the Dead Sea
    By way of Jericho!
    Yerushalayim shel zahav
    Ve-shel nehoshet ve-shel or
    Ha-lo le-chol shirayich ani kinnor
Jerusalem of gold, and of bronze and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs

I first heard this song while visiting the museum on Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem. The words and historical significance of the song were explained on the wall, and the song played on a loop. Just as I was reading about it, a large group of young IDF soldiers who happened to be visiting the museum stopped by the words and sang the whole song through with her. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

Whoever sings this song- be it Naomi Shemer ( the one who wrote it originally for the troops during the 6 day war), Avraham Fried, or the late Ofra Haza, it has the ability to send shivers down your spine because its lyrics and somewhat haunting tone are that powerful.

I feel your pain. I listened and watched. Hate is rising quickly. I need music to
keep me on an even kiel. I listen to this as well as old Yiddish melodies. I
remember the past and hope for a better future. My heart aches for my
      brothers and sisters in Pittsburgh.
