I’d love to learn more about the cypress process. I bought a pair of Vibergs in English Tan Cypress and it has quickly become my favorite leather that I own. I loved it so much that I bought another pair in the Brown Nut Cypress!
Can you share any information from the tanner’s perspective about the Shackleton leather with regards to how it patinas, how long it will stay waterproof, how to keep it waterproof, and how it was developed? To what degree do the answers to those questions change based on how it’s processed into products such as boots, belts, and wallets? Seems like it has made its way into several different boot builds, but performance specifics are slim (because it’s new).
Questions for the Q&A: 1. How are the raw/blue hides preserved before they come to the factory? Are they chromed? Are they refrigerated? What’s their shelf life? 2. How can you darken brown chrome excel? Dark brown shoe cream followed by some VSC? I have a pair of boots that one boot has gotten lighter/more reddish over time and the other boot is still a true dark brown. Having trouble getting them to match. Tried sun-fading the darker boot and conditioner on the lighter boot with pretty marginal results. 3. Does Horween have a true reddish-brown Chromexcel? I’ve seen Wolverine offer “Rust” Chromexcel boots, Thursday offers a “French Roast Chromexcel and Grant Stone offers a “Dark Walnut” Chromexcel? Are these the same and does Horween have an in-house name for the color?
Late question, sorry guys. Maybe this has been asked before but has the advent of growth hormones etc affected the quality of the hides before and after tanning in any discernable way? Maybe Skip can also be consulted on this question as he may have had experience before and after the widespread use.
The worst people in the boot world are the ones who expect perfection and nitpick everything with a fine tooth comb I usually tell them a hand made product is just not for you.

I have "French Roast CXL" from Thursday. I also have wondered what the official Horween name is for that color? Great question!
@@favidh1934 yeah I have the French roast vanguard…unfortunately it’s not a great fit for me. But that leather is just a beautiful color.
Goral from the UK has sneakers in Horween. They are not quite as expensive as Crown Northampton.
