@neal6473 I bought it about 6 years ago now. People ask me, "is it fast" and I tell them, "it's the fastest living room I have ever driven." Then, people say "living room?" and I tell them, "Yeah it's as big as a living room on the inside & the outside!" Its engine was rebuilt by the PD that owned it and I had the AOD rebuilt when it went out. it's had it's brakes, shocks and front suspension rebuilt with NOS 9C1 parts. It's a blast to drive and it's AC kicks but too!
I am proud tgo say i owned a 95 SS and a 96 ss BRAND NEW. i HAD TO GET THE 96 WITH the floor shifter and analog gauges it was fun in the 95 SS the digital spedo would just turn to a blur at WOT from a stop to about 60mph the gauge couldn't keep up LOL That car power rating was way underrated it hauled ass and cruised at 150mph easily handling extended highway open road for miles at a time no overheating. Funny' I am currently doing some suspension upgrades on my retro old school muscle style built 1972 Caprice 4 door hardtop that i restored nearly frame of in 1995 and still own now 27 years later but modernizing a lot of things. nearly all the 96 Impala SS suspension parts are interchangeable with my 72 Caprice many suspension parts are identical like sway bars, rear diff trailing arms, front A arms and front disc brakes. I owned 1996 Impala SS with 40,000 miles on it that I sold it in 2004 for what I paid for it. I miss that car but 2 years later I bought a 2006 trailblazer SS which I still own today.

I was born a year after the last year they made them, which was 1996. If it was up to me I'd either leave it alone and stock or if I'd modify it I'd go the Callaway route. I don't like putting big rims on something like a Impala SS. Biggest I'd go would be 20s.
as much as i love these b body whales. the ones i seen for sale are this. Either completely taken care of, running and drive with no body issues. and they want 20k+ or ones that are complete basket cases and want 20k for em.... there is like no in between
To break your heart even more. In 2007 We sold my Grandpa's 1995 Caprice Classic L99 59k miles. Nothing special. We sold it at a swap meet to a young family that desperately needed a car for $1850. That's a $10k car now.
@@mikerobinson3672 hows that gonna break my heart dawg, you helped someone. thats something that shouldn't break a heart unless its a good one. wanna hear a real hear break, my mother owned a real GTO and a 454 chevelle. meet my father and started getting drunk and high and crashed em! im da crack baby! but even worse. im the 3rd crack baby and the only one to survive child birth, and you know what i did with my life... nothing, i've done nothing, plan on doing nothing. only wanted to live longer than my mom so i could help her in her old age... now shes passed a few months ago. i got left with a funeral bill, 2k left to my name, rents due and jobless. and honestly... i think ima just pass my heart on to the next person who wants to live. so hopefully my body can be of use to many people who have issues. as the worse i got is chronic depression and diabetus. everything else works pretty well. i've also been told im incredibly smart by my college teacher who used to teach for mit forging and welding department, but asked why i never commit to anything. and its like, well when you been thinking of just offing one's self since you where 4, life just isn't fun. i could go be a welder right now. but im just eh... this is fine. i dont want nothing, i just don't wanna be a hassle to anyone. so im trying to do it in a way that no one has to have ptsd and can find my body and it still be usable.
I missed out on getting a '96 Impala SS, and I wanted one so badly! But I have a ~600 hp Vortech supercharged 2003 Marauder with tons of exhaust, suspension, and brake mods, 4.10:1 ring and pinion gears, etc... I've spent a bundle getting the car to the point it's at, and a lot of hours turning wrenches and cursing at busted and bloodied knuckles, but it's so rewarding when it beats cars you probably wouldn't believe. Panthers and B-Bodies forever!

Its the Chevy SS with different badges all Chevy SS were built in Australia under the Holden name they then rebadged them and imported to USA only about 12k total over those few years. I have seen several Chevy SS that owners have imported the Holden Commodore badging and it makes the car look way fucking cool just google image search 2016 Holden Commodore its a beauty.
Don't sleep on the 94-96 Buick Roadmaster. Just an Impala SS with more chrome and comforts. Unfortunately no floor shift though 😢. I've always wanted to put a 8.1 Vortec in mine. Or an old Buick 455. But the LT1 is pretty good
It's an Impala SS in a tuxedo. Much better bang for buck. Depending on the year it's geared better. Looks better. More versatile appearance. List goes on lol
The '96 Impala SS models came from the factory with a floor shift four speed automatic, but I am sure that retrofits for earlier models are out there, too.
Roadmasters came with 2.56 rear gears and rear drum brakes, not 3.08 and discs like the Impala and 9C1. I'm pretty sure that the heavy-duty suspension on the Roadmaster is also inferior. Obviously all of that can be upgraded, but I still hate the 1994-1996 Roadmaster dash. The 1991-1993 dash is much better, and the gen 1 small block Chevy is much cheaper to upgrade.
I'm a fan of cars like these that you don't see everyday. I had a 1995 SHO automatic. It was the last year of the Yamaha V6. I always compared it to the SS, as they both had similar acceleration numbers. I also liked the Maurader, loved the G8 and 2014-17 Chevy SS models. I also had a 2000 Grand Prix GTP which was a blast to drive and own. Also loved the 89-96 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupes. They made a 1990 35th Anniversary edition that was the cat's meow! Haven't seen one of those in years!
I miss the big cruisers. We all had Impalas, Crown Vics, Delta 88s, Roadmasters, etc back in the day because gas was cheap, parts were cheap, they were cheap to buy, they road like a cloud and had enough room to do all sorts of things in. Just the fuel bill alone would bankrupt most people now....sad days.
Unpopular fact… has is plenty cheap right now. Pick a date in history and check the fuel prices, then adjust that for the inflation and see what you end up with. There are times where it was cheaper, and times it was more expensive. But for the best part gas is where it needs to be.
I had a 91 Caprice wagon the previous owner set up as a tribute/clone of the SS version. Black with aftermarket wheels that closely resembled the SS mags. Got compliments where ever I went. Only drawback was I had to avoid small airports. Too many small planes tried to land on the roof

I was the fastest California smog legal 4 door until STi's started being built. The block I put almost a month into. It was honed in every direction possible (started with a low mile Trans-am block, preserved the original engine) I used a rotary tool and chamfered every hard edge, to reduce stress risers, and I had to relieve the H-beam rods so they could spin. Lots of meat had to come out the block for those. I had a Lunati crank, that I spent another week on, knife-edging the leading edges, to reduce oil froth, and then rebalancing. AFR and Vortech were sponsors, so that part wasn't as expensive as it could be. I got Vortechs biggest supercharger, and we changed the impeller and I had a custom pulley made, even smaller than they offered. I was able to hit 2 bar, in a day and age where everyone said it was impossible to run a daily on. I used a "Computerized Engine Iterative Tester" to "find my Camshaft". It was one-off numbers, that even the guy that custom ground it for me said, I've never seen numbers like this before, good luck. The camshaft was crazy. I achieved great top end (6800rpm), and didn't have undriveable lope on the bottom. AND THEN THE FUN STARTED! They didn't have electronic transmissions back then that could handle over 1000hp. They also didn't have dynos that could handle 1000hp. I changed a lot of that. I broke two mustangs, my guy wasn't happy, but he did get them to come out and replace them twice. Second time, we got it up to handle 1200hp. Then I broke it again. If you use a 4L80E for high HP, "You're welcome". I worked with Phoenix transmissions to develop a 1500hp transmission. I was 4 transmissions deep at that point. Kept breaking the internals. Cost almost as much as the whole car. After all that, I had to get a custom CF driveshaft, which back then it might as well have been a Space Shuttle part, it was so expensive. And I hadn't broken a rear yet, because I never dropped the pedal, every launch was rolled-into, and controlled by the PCM to not be too violent. But I was prepared for that with a 9inch. Then I decided to go to a SCTA event and see if what I built could do something. 208mph. I still have that engine. Bad-ass engine. And I bought something last year to put it in. Hoping to hit 230mph this time.

Yup. Chevrolet's last good car. I still remember that video of this car beating the heck out police Crown Victorias. It was a beast for its time. Most people ruin this car by putting giant rims on it, however.
Got dyno sheets for that? The B-body LT1 has the same camshaft as the Vortec 350, and the iron LT1 heads flow the same as the Vortec 350 heads. The Vortec 350 is 255hp. I'm not believing that the B-body LT1 miraculously makes 45hp more than a virtually identical engine or the same as the Corvette engine that has a bigger camshaft, higher compression, and better exhaust system and is tuned fie premium fuel.
I have an Impala SS, but the 04 version. Motor Week featured in it's1995 Impala SS review, a one-off version, designed by Jon Moss. It featured a blueprinted LT-1 V8 that was rated at 308 hp.
I have a 2012 Impala. I love the 3.6 LFX with the 6 speed auto. 300 hp, 30 mpg, and 4 doors. I enjoy driving it everytime I sit my butt in the seat. Best car I've ever had. My father bought it from an auction at our local regional jail for $1200, he practically stole it lol. He gave it to me after I fell asleep and hit a light pole with my Grand Prix. Best car ever, best dad ever.
My clips at the beginning, I had the chance to film this car and man it's a beauty and it can move. The one I shot was the burgundy color and it was gorgeous.
I'm a big fan of these classics. The exterior's colors and trim to go with the thick tires, 5 spoke wheels, and lower ground clearance make it look like a true muscle car. And the sound of that 350 really got a person's attention. My favorite color is the Dark Cherry. Ford's attempt with the Mercury Marauder wasn't as successful as this Impala SS. A match between a 1996 Impala SS and 2023 Charger R/T would be a perfect race.
Eh... That 350 basically made no sound stock. With the stock resonators and 1-7/8" tailpipes, my dad's 1995 Impala sounded wimpier than my mom's 1991 Caprice 305, which had stock 2-1/2" single exhaust all the way.
This is my favorite in Impala generation, even though it was only around for 2 years and was a souped up Chevy Caprice/Cop Car. But one that left a big impact.
I know Mercury built the Marauder to sort of compete with the SS but I figured Mercury should have put the 5.4 in it. And I mean the 2 valve 5.4, not the 3 valve disaster. Some people have done some 5.4 conversions in Crown Vics and those things are deceptively fast. A race between an SS and a 5.4 Crown Vic or Marauder would have been interesting.
Hardly worth the trouble. The 5.4L has somewhat more hp and torque to a comparable 4.6, but the difference is hardly worth the trouble of swapping the engine. For what? twenty to forty hp and maybe a little bit more torque? You could beef up a 4.6 for less money and get more value for your dollar. Lots more parts for the 4.6 as well. Bragging rights that you have a 5.4 instead of a 4.6 won't yield you more performance by itself. You might even need to modify your hood to clear the slightly taller 5.4L. Not worth it.
Did mercury really build that thing to compete with the SS? They waited about a decade too long. The merc was built in 03 and 04. What years was the SS built?

I believe that even by adding a stronger and better motor to the 03 or 04 Mercury Marauder, it still wouldn't outperform the 94 to 96 Impala SS models. '90s Impala SS cars launched during a better era compared to Mercury Marauders, and the Impala's brand enjoys greater legendary status and stronger muscle car heritage.
The sad oart is the la knof aftermarket replacement parts for such an iconic car. You can build an entire Chevy C10 from scratch but you can't find simple interior pieces for these cars brand new. And used parts cost a fortune in great shape. I know the limited number runs or the factor but the fact that no company picked up reproduction of the parts to keep the cars alive is wild. proud 96 owner.
Had a '95. Nice car. Handled well, but was actually quite slow. One of the annoying things was I got the car with 58 miles on it, and quite of few things were rusting underneath the car already. To be honest, the car was not as clean underneath as it should have been for a new car.
Your not mentioning the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Of the same time period. They also had the LT-1 engine in them. I put a police intercepsir ECU unit in one and that Fleetwood was one bad ass Cadillac when I was done. One of the fastest cars I have ever driven after that modification.
Jon Moss aimed to install big block engines in his Impala SS vehicles, but his senior bosses rejected the idea in favor of the small block LT1 engine from the Corvette. Regardless of any obstacles, the car succeeded brilliantly. Huge thanks to Jon Moss, a true legend!
It was also the same "B" body chassis as the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser for the 1991-1992 model year as well as related to the Cadillac DeVille (although technically a "D" body) from 1993 to 1996.
A,500 inch Caddy in a Caprice/Impala chassis would have been interesting. I drove Caprices and Crown Vics professionally back in the 90s. They included the 85 to 90 Crowns, 85 to 89 Chevys, and 91 Caprices. The Caprices always handled better. The old Crowns would get tail happy with the torque of a 351W PI in tight maneuvers and would have been even more interesting with more power. The 91 Caprices were 350 TBI powered and had suspensions to handle the power more smoothly. Only got scary when the shop decided to buy 78-series all season white wall replacement tires instead of Goodyear Eagles. The entity where I worked would not buy LT1 powered Caprices, opting instead to go with the small 267(?) cubic inch port injected optional V-8 to discourage law breakers from feeling the need to have to drive really fast to get away. So I missed out on the LT1 police cars, but do remember seeing a Roadmaster station wagon powered by the same motor at a car show and suggesting to my wife we needed a new family car. Didn’t fly…
Last full chassis Impala... no front wheel drive rental...5.7 that i can to without because its a pain in the ass to work on.Cam driven water pump over the optical distributor..Love the feel of the car as it's a solid metal body. I would vortex it from a 99 Tahoe instead of the LS oil knock.Just keeping it real. I worked on old Impala models form the 60s till today. Still putting the , Chevrolet name strong on the block 20+ years after.100 keeper.
Purchased brand new 1995 SS Impala. Kick ass car. Dusted off many unsuspecting GT Mustangs. It was smooth and very fast for the day. Had it up to 140 mph couple of times on I-275 bypass around Cincinnati. Owned it for just 13 months. GM bought it back from me as it had the dreaded P.A.S.S. anti theft problems. Dealership cut me a check for my full purchase price. I put 13k miles on it. Miss it. 4 door missile.
And a little known fact was the 1977+ B bodies were strongly based on the 1973-77 colonnade A body i.e. Chevelle, Cutlass etc I goofed; referring to the 'mid sized' GM cars as B bodies, my bad
Kind of like how the 1991-1996 B-body is strongly based on the 1977-1990 B-body -- basically the same chassis and floor pan with different exterior sheet metal.
The owner of the dealership I work at had/has one that has 13 original miles, factory seat/floor mats still wrapped up. Don’t know if he sold it or not but had to replace a window regulator guide clip/detent
My PI swapped 1999 Town car has similar specs, if I kept the engine and exhaust and tune stock it would have only been down -21hp and -43lb-ft torque compared to the Impala, my SOHC also his peak torque at around 4000 rpm whereas the impala hit peak torque at 2400 rpm I have a watts link, and hard to find body parts thanks to it being offered in my style for 5 years... If Lincoln had a brain they would have given the towny an option for the same engine as the cobra, after all it originated in the Mark 8 to begin with.
Since the SS is as rare as it is, I've always harbored the dream to make a clone out of a retired cruiser by slathering it in wet black and dropping in a hot small block, though I'd prefer to get rid of that 4L80E and hooking up a T-56 in its place.
In my 95 SS I got bucket seats (they all did) and cupholders and I saved thousands going with the column shift SS over the 96. And it's more "rare" lol
@@nikothevirgo You do you and buy want you want, that's OK. I personally would never have a SS without a center console. My 1968 Impala and Caprice had them. I was looking for a 96 and could not find a good one without paying big bucks. I bought a 94 Z28 instead. It has 87K original miles and it is faster and handles better. It has a LT1 motor like the Impala and Corvette of that era.
The Mark VIII was not a muscle car and wasn't marketed as such. The Marauder was more of a muscle car image vehicle than an actual muscle car. Ford had plenty of vehicles in its stable that could outrun the two ton Merc, and the 32V 4.6 was in pretty much every V8 powered Lincoln in the mid to late 90's and early 2000's. Ford could have saved Mercury's image by doing more with the Marauder, especially with the rear drive LS already out of the picture by then.
@@houseofno Hey bro, Ford and the Mercury divisions messed up. Why would they launch a muscle car just 22 months after 9/11 when the economy was struggling and the country was at war? Mercury also didn't promote the Marauder brand after discontinuing it in 1969. By the time 2003 rolled around, they decided to reintroduce it, but Generation X didn’t know anything about the Marauder. Only baby boomers were familiar with it. Everyone knows about the Impala, young and old alike 😉💯.
I owned one brand new ( totaled a few months later when parked in front of a restaurant) It was a fun car, but even then the interior was that terrible GM corporate junk. Moved on to a 5 series.
I had 24s on mines and now 22s. I will say though that I have full qa1 front to back, which set me back $5k. So you really have to do tons of work if you want to ride big wheels and do it right. Now looking back, I spent about $10k on wheels and suspension. I wish I would have honestly just saved and dropped an lt4 in mines

I have a '96 Base Model Caprice Classic - restored and resto-modded - nicer than the SS - rides better - cloth interior - better mileage . the 4.3 LT-1 wakes up with aftermarket dual exhaust. 15 X 8 Slots look Old School, and less than 10k ever made !
Several things not quite right here. It's not a Corvette engine any more than any run of the mill 1970s truck 350 is a Corvette engine. Iron heads, lower compression, smaller cam (used in Vortec 350), different exhaust manifolds (same as F-body), different oil pan, and tune for regular instead of premium fuel, all add up to 40hp less. As for the LT1 in the 9C1 being a 100hp improvement over its predecessor -- its predecessor was 200hp, which is not 100hp less than 260hp. The rear wheel openings and tail lights were revised on the 1993 Caprice, so they have nothing to do with distinguishing the Impala from the Caprice. The only exterior body changes on the Impala were the grille, spoiler, and making most of the chrome either body color or flat black, plus the 1994-only quarter window filler panels. As for the chassis itself dating back to the 1977 Caprice, keep going. It's the same as the 1973-1977 A-body, and the front suspension is essentially 1970-1981 F-body. The seats are really not an improvement over the Caprice. They might look sportier, but they are hard, flat, and slick. Never mind that the quality of the leather is horrible. The Caprice seats with corduroy velour are much more comfortable and supportive.
It was just a 9C1 with a different trim. Even the Caprice was available with the LT-1. So the whole "heart of a Corvette" thing is a bit of a misnomer.
Especially since the heads, camshaft, compression ratio, exhaust manifolds, and tune were different than a Corvette. It's like saying that a 1977 pickup truck 350 is the same thing as an L82 Corvette 350.
Ulike all of the other engines GM made. They didn't stuff the LT into everything possible. They only came in B/D, Y, and F body..... The LT was in the Corvette first. One f the early concept cars was advertised by GM with a "Corvette LT1". The thing only lasted 92-97 they were sued over the design. The LT is really it's only little weird SBC. Which is part of why no one bothers with them...
These cars "stock" not all Walmart chromed up are one of the best overall cars I've ever driven! Try to keep them stock guys. Some of these look goofy with all the nick nack patty whacks all over em.

Holden was also under the American brand GM but that doesn't make a Chevy SS American. I was the original owner of a nineteen ninety six impala super sport. That d*** thing had so many freaking problems. It piss me off. When I sold it It only had fifty three thousand miles on it. I was glad to see it go, and I'll never buy a chevy ever again.
Oh Lord I figured there'd be at least one donk in the video. So how do you want me to modify your car? Well I need a lift kit, gigantic, heavy wheels that make the car slower and handle terribly. Oh andeI need to totally ruins the ride quality so put rubber bands on those hyge wheels. Ph and one more thing, I have this idea for wheels where I can add even more unsprung mass and make the wheel bearings really scream for mercy. The best part is that my idea will create inertia that makes the car even worse in regards to handling. I think I'm gonna call them "spinners". Well alright just as long as you don't put an extreme amount of camber on the wheels to where you've got like five percent of the tire for your contact patch. Oh c'mon man. I'm not stupid you know. Next thing you'll know people will be tunng their engines to dump a bunch of gas in the exhaust manifold so it sounds like WWII driving by the local Walmart.
The Maurader is a bad*ss car, byt i would say its more "modern" and les old school than the impala SS with the Maruader ahving the aluminum DOHC v8. But very fair point lol

The only LT4 was in 1996 6-speed Corvettes. The LT1 was the base engine in all 1992-1996 Corvettes, but it is significantly different than the B-body LT1.

I have a 1995 Chevy Caprice 9C1 with a rebuilt 350CI LT-1 V-8 and a rebuilt AOD. It is quite fast and pretty darn big. I love it!

@neal6473 I bought it about 6 years ago now. People ask me, "is it fast" and I tell them, "it's the fastest living room I have ever driven." Then, people say "living room?" and I tell them, "Yeah it's as big as a living room on the inside & the outside!" Its engine was rebuilt by the PD that owned it and I had the AOD rebuilt when it went out. it's had it's brakes, shocks and front suspension rebuilt with NOS 9C1 parts. It's a blast to drive and it's AC kicks but too!

I am proud tgo say i owned a 95 SS and a 96 ss BRAND NEW. i HAD TO GET THE 96 WITH the floor shifter and analog gauges it was fun in the 95 SS the digital spedo would just turn to a blur at WOT from a stop to about 60mph the gauge couldn't keep up LOL That car power rating was way underrated it hauled ass and cruised at 150mph easily handling extended highway open road for miles at a time no overheating. Funny' I am currently doing some suspension upgrades on my retro old school muscle style built 1972 Caprice 4 door hardtop that i restored nearly frame of in 1995 and still own now 27 years later but modernizing a lot of things. nearly all the 96 Impala SS suspension parts are interchangeable with my 72 Caprice many suspension parts are identical like sway bars, rear diff trailing arms, front A arms and front disc brakes. B Body Car frame I could drill a few different holes in the 96 SS frame and mount my 72 4 door hardtop chassis right onto it. all frame dimensions and sizes- specs- wheelbase and frame axle width is identical to my 1972 Caprice. of the 94-96 SS Here's a link to my 1972 Caprice 400 door hardtop 400SBC first 2 min is an epic burnout then it leads to a 3 min phot montage of my 72 Caprice the way it sits 5 months ago its a head turner. I owned 1996 Impala SS with 40,000 miles on it that I sold it in 2004 for what I paid for it. I miss that car but 2 years later I bought a 2006 trailblazer SS which I still own today.

To break your heart even more. In 2007 We sold my Grandpa's 1995 Caprice Classic L99 59k miles. Nothing special. We sold it at a swap meet to a young family that desperately needed a car for $1850.

I missed out on getting a '96 Impala SS, and I wanted one so badly! But I have a ~600 hp Vortech supercharged 2003 Marauder with tons of exhaust, suspension, and brake mods, 4.10:1 ring and pinion gears, etc... I've spent a bundle getting the car to the point it's at, and a lot of hours turning wrenches and cursing at busted and bloodied knuckles, but it's so rewarding when it beats cars you probably wouldn't believe. Panthers and B-Bodies forever!

Its the Chevy SS with different badges all Chevy SS were built in Australia under the Holden name they then rebadged them and imported to USA only about 12k total over those few years. I have seen several Chevy SS that owners have imported the Holden Commodore badging and it makes the car look way fucking cool just google image search 2016 Holden Commodore its a beauty.
Don't sleep on the 94-96 Buick Roadmaster. Just an Impala SS with more chrome and comforts. Unfortunately no floor shift though 😢. I've always wanted to put a 8.1 Vortec in mine. Or an old Buick 455. But the LT1 is pretty good

The '96 Impala SS models came from the factory with a floor shift four speed automatic, but I am sure that retrofits for earlier models are out there, too.

Roadmasters came with 2.56 rear gears and rear drum brakes, not 3.08 and discs like the Impala and 9C1. I'm pretty sure that the heavy-duty suspension on the Roadmaster is also inferior. Obviously all of that can be upgraded, but I still hate the 1994-1996 Roadmaster dash. The 1991-1993 dash is much better, and the gen 1 small block Chevy is much cheaper to upgrade.

I'm a fan of cars like these that you don't see everyday. I had a 1995 SHO automatic. It was the last year of the Yamaha V6. I always compared it to the SS, as they both had similar acceleration numbers. I also liked the Maurader, loved the G8 and 2014-17 Chevy SS models. I also had a 2000 Grand Prix GTP which was a blast to drive and own. Also loved the 89-96 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupes. They made a 1990 35th Anniversary edition that was the cat's meow! Haven't seen one of those in years!

I miss the big cruisers. We all had Impalas, Crown Vics, Delta 88s, Roadmasters, etc back in the day because gas was cheap, parts were cheap, they were cheap to buy, they road like a cloud and had enough room to do all sorts of things in. Just the fuel bill alone would bankrupt most people now....sad days.

Pick a date in history and check the fuel prices, then adjust that for the inflation and see what you end up with.
There are times where it was cheaper, and times it was more expensive. But for the best part gas is where it needs to be.

I had a 91 Caprice wagon the previous owner set up as a tribute/clone of the SS version. Black with aftermarket wheels that closely resembled the SS mags. Got compliments where ever I went. Only drawback was I had to avoid small airports. Too many small planes tried to land on the roof

@@rarecars3336 Literally everything. I made it a big project to get the highest powered LT1 at the time, without cheating emissions. I was the fastest California smog legal 4 door until STi's started being built.
The block I put almost a month into. It was honed in every direction possible (started with a low mile Trans-am block, preserved the original engine)
I used a rotary tool and chamfered every hard edge, to reduce stress risers, and I had to relieve the H-beam rods so they could spin. Lots of meat had to come out the block for those.
I had a Lunati crank, that I spent another week on, knife-edging the leading edges, to reduce oil froth, and then rebalancing.
AFR and Vortech were sponsors, so that part wasn't as expensive as it could be. I got Vortechs biggest supercharger, and we changed the impeller and I had a custom pulley made, even smaller than they offered.
I was able to hit 2 bar, in a day and age where everyone said it was impossible to run a daily on.
I used a "Computerized Engine Iterative Tester" to "find my Camshaft". It was one-off numbers, that even the guy that custom ground it for me said, I've never seen numbers like this before, good luck.
The camshaft was crazy. I achieved great top end (6800rpm), and didn't have undriveable lope on the bottom.
AND THEN THE FUN STARTED!
They didn't have electronic transmissions back then that could handle over 1000hp.
They also didn't have dynos that could handle 1000hp.
I changed a lot of that.
I broke two mustangs, my guy wasn't happy, but he did get them to come out and replace them twice. Second time, we got it up to handle 1200hp. Then I broke it again.
If you use a 4L80E for high HP, "You're welcome".
I worked with Phoenix transmissions to develop a 1500hp transmission.
I was 4 transmissions deep at that point. Kept breaking the internals. Cost almost as much as the whole car.
After all that, I had to get a custom CF driveshaft, which back then it might as well have been a Space Shuttle part, it was so expensive.
And I hadn't broken a rear yet, because I never dropped the pedal, every launch was rolled-into, and controlled by the PCM to not be too violent. But I was prepared for that with a 9inch.
Then I decided to go to a SCTA event and see if what I built could do something.
208mph.
I still have that engine. Bad-ass engine.
And I bought something last year to put it in.
Hoping to hit 230mph this time.

Most people ruin this car by putting giant rims on it, however.
The Impala SS has 300 horsepower. Chevrolet rated it at 260 horsepower because they were not going to have a car be equal to its flagship.
Got dyno sheets for that? The B-body LT1 has the same camshaft as the Vortec 350, and the iron LT1 heads flow the same as the Vortec 350 heads. The Vortec 350 is 255hp. I'm not believing that the B-body LT1 miraculously makes 45hp more than a virtually identical engine or the same as the Corvette engine that has a bigger camshaft, higher compression, and better exhaust system and is tuned fie premium fuel.

I have an Impala SS, but the 04 version. Motor Week featured in it's1995 Impala SS review, a one-off version, designed by Jon Moss. It featured a blueprinted LT-1 V8 that was rated at 308 hp.
I have a 2012 Impala. I love the 3.6 LFX with the 6 speed auto. 300 hp, 30 mpg, and 4 doors. I enjoy driving it everytime I sit my butt in the seat. Best car I've ever had. My father bought it from an auction at our local regional jail for $1200, he practically stole it lol. He gave it to me after I fell asleep and hit a light pole with my Grand Prix. Best car ever, best dad ever.

I'm a big fan of these classics. The exterior's colors and trim to go with the thick tires, 5 spoke wheels, and lower ground clearance make it look like a true muscle car. And the sound of that 350 really got a person's attention. My favorite color is the Dark Cherry.
Ford's attempt with the Mercury Marauder wasn't as successful as this Impala SS.
A match between a 1996 Impala SS and 2023 Charger R/T would be a perfect race.
Eh... That 350 basically made no sound stock. With the stock resonators and 1-7/8" tailpipes, my dad's 1995 Impala sounded wimpier than my mom's 1991 Caprice 305, which had stock 2-1/2" single exhaust all the way.

I know Mercury built the Marauder to sort of compete with the SS but I figured Mercury should have put the 5.4 in it. And I mean the 2 valve 5.4, not the 3 valve disaster. Some people have done some 5.4 conversions in Crown Vics and those things are deceptively fast. A race between an SS and a 5.4 Crown Vic or Marauder would have been interesting.
The marauder c head 4.6 4v makes more power than the 5.4 2v
Hardly worth the trouble. The 5.4L has somewhat more hp and torque to a comparable 4.6, but the difference is hardly worth the trouble of swapping the engine. For what? twenty to forty hp and maybe a little bit more torque? You could beef up a 4.6 for less money and get more value for your dollar. Lots more parts for the 4.6 as well. Bragging rights that you have a 5.4 instead of a 4.6 won't yield you more performance by itself. You might even need to modify your hood to clear the slightly taller 5.4L. Not worth it.
Did mercury really build that thing to compete with the SS? They waited about a decade too long. The merc was built in 03 and 04. What years was the SS built?

I believe that even by adding a stronger and better motor to the 03 or 04 Mercury Marauder, it still wouldn't outperform the 94 to 96 Impala SS models. '90s Impala SS cars launched during a better era compared to Mercury Marauders, and the Impala's brand enjoys greater legendary status and stronger muscle car heritage.
The sad oart is the la knof aftermarket replacement parts for such an iconic car. You can build an entire Chevy C10 from scratch but you can't find simple interior pieces for these cars brand new. And used parts cost a fortune in great shape. I know the limited number runs or the factor but the fact that no company picked up reproduction of the parts to keep the cars alive is wild. proud 96 owner.

Had a '95. Nice car. Handled well, but was actually quite slow. One of the annoying things was I got the car with 58 miles on it, and quite of few things were rusting underneath the car already. To be honest, the car was not as clean underneath as it should have been for a new car.
These days, the 8.1 Vortec with modern automatic would transform this car much the way the LS7 did the Corvette. That would be my aim if I owned one
Your not mentioning the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Of the same time period. They also had the LT-1 engine in them. I put a police intercepsir ECU unit in one and that Fleetwood was one bad ass Cadillac when I was done. One of the fastest cars I have ever driven after that modification.
As usual, GM drops the ball by not offering it with a big block. Beautiful cars
Jon Moss aimed to install big block engines in his Impala SS vehicles, but his senior bosses rejected the idea in favor of the small block LT1 engine from the Corvette. Regardless of any obstacles, the car succeeded brilliantly. Huge thanks to Jon Moss, a true legend!

Loved this last impalas! Not as cool as 59 and 60 models, but cool non the less.
It was also the same "B" body chassis as the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser for the 1991-1992 model year as well as related to the Cadillac DeVille (although technically a "D" body) from 1993 to 1996.
A,500 inch Caddy in a Caprice/Impala chassis would have been interesting.
I drove Caprices and Crown Vics professionally back in the 90s. They included the 85 to 90 Crowns, 85 to 89 Chevys, and 91 Caprices. The Caprices always handled better. The old Crowns would get tail happy with the torque of a 351W PI in tight maneuvers and would have been even more interesting with more power. The 91 Caprices were 350 TBI powered and had suspensions to handle the power more smoothly. Only got scary when the shop decided to buy 78-series all season white wall replacement tires instead of Goodyear Eagles. The entity where I worked would not buy LT1 powered Caprices, opting instead to go with the small 267(?) cubic inch port injected optional V-8 to discourage law breakers from feeling the need to have to drive really fast to get away. So I missed out on the LT1 police cars, but do remember seeing a Roadmaster station wagon powered by the same motor at a car show and suggesting to my wife we needed a new family car. Didn’t fly…
Last full chassis Impala... no front wheel drive rental...5.7 that i can to without because its a pain in the ass to work on.Cam driven water pump over the optical distributor..Love the feel of the car as it's a solid metal body. I would vortex it from a 99 Tahoe instead of the LS oil knock.Just keeping it real. I worked on old Impala models form the 60s till today. Still putting the , Chevrolet name strong on the block 20+ years after.100 keeper.
Purchased brand new 1995 SS Impala. Kick ass car. Dusted off many unsuspecting GT Mustangs. It was smooth and very fast for the day. Had it up to 140 mph couple of times on I-275 bypass around Cincinnati. Owned it for just 13 months. GM bought it back from me as it had the dreaded P.A.S.S. anti theft problems. Dealership cut me a check for my full purchase price. I put 13k miles on it. Miss it. 4 door missile.
And a little known fact was the 1977+ B bodies were strongly based on the 1973-77 colonnade A body i.e. Chevelle, Cutlass etc

The owner of the dealership I work at had/has one that has 13 original miles, factory seat/floor mats still wrapped up. Don’t know if he sold it or not but had to replace a window regulator guide clip/detent
My PI swapped 1999 Town car has similar specs, if I kept the engine and exhaust and tune stock it would have only been down -21hp and -43lb-ft torque compared to the Impala, my SOHC also his peak torque at around 4000 rpm whereas the impala hit peak torque at 2400 rpm

Since the SS is as rare as it is, I've always harbored the dream to make a clone out of a retired cruiser by slathering it in wet black and dropping in a hot small block, though I'd prefer to get rid of that 4L80E and hooking up a T-56 in its place.

@@nikothevirgo You do you and buy want you want, that's OK. I personally would never have a SS without a center console. My 1968 Impala and Caprice had them. I was looking for a 96 and could not find a good one without paying big bucks. I bought a 94 Z28 instead. It has 87K original miles and it is faster and handles better. It has a LT1 motor like the Impala and Corvette of that era.

The Impala SS is NOT the last of the big body muscle cars. Lincoln had the Mark VIII LSC until 99 and Mercury had the Marauder in 2003-2004.

The Mark VIII was not a muscle car and wasn't marketed as such. The Marauder was more of a muscle car image vehicle than an actual muscle car. Ford had plenty of vehicles in its stable that could outrun the two ton Merc, and the 32V 4.6 was in pretty much every V8 powered Lincoln in the mid to late 90's and early 2000's. Ford could have saved Mercury's image by doing more with the Marauder, especially with the rear drive LS already out of the picture by then.
@@houseofno Hey bro, Ford and the Mercury divisions messed up. Why would they launch a muscle car just 22 months after 9/11 when the economy was struggling and the country was at war? Mercury also didn't promote the Marauder brand after discontinuing it in 1969. By the time 2003 rolled around, they decided to reintroduce it, but Generation X didn’t know anything about the Marauder. Only baby boomers were familiar with it. Everyone knows about the Impala, young and old alike 😉💯.

I owned one brand new ( totaled a few months later when parked in front of a restaurant) It was a fun car, but even then the interior was that terrible GM corporate junk. Moved on to a 5 series.

I had 24s on mines and now 22s. I will say though that I have full qa1 front to back, which set me back $5k. So you really have to do tons of work if you want to ride big wheels and do it right. Now looking back, I spent about $10k on wheels and suspension. I wish I would have honestly just saved and dropped an lt4 in mines

I raced a 96 impala in my 280zx,I won by nose,he was pissed.
The concept car did NOT have a Cadillac engine.
And Cadillac never produced a 502. It was a 500.
It likely had the Chevy 8.2 big block 502 engine.

I have a '96 Base Model Caprice Classic - restored and resto-modded - nicer than the SS - rides better - cloth interior - better mileage . the 4.3 LT-1 wakes up with aftermarket dual exhaust. 15 X 8 Slots look Old School, and less than 10k ever made !

Several things not quite right here.
It's not a Corvette engine any more than any run of the mill 1970s truck 350 is a Corvette engine. Iron heads, lower compression, smaller cam (used in Vortec 350), different exhaust manifolds (same as F-body), different oil pan, and tune for regular instead of premium fuel, all add up to 40hp less. As for the LT1 in the 9C1 being a 100hp improvement over its predecessor -- its predecessor was 200hp, which is not 100hp less than 260hp.
The rear wheel openings and tail lights were revised on the 1993 Caprice, so they have nothing to do with distinguishing the Impala from the Caprice. The only exterior body changes on the Impala were the grille, spoiler, and making most of the chrome either body color or flat black, plus the 1994-only quarter window filler panels.
As for the chassis itself dating back to the 1977 Caprice, keep going. It's the same as the 1973-1977 A-body, and the front suspension is essentially 1970-1981 F-body.
The seats are really not an improvement over the Caprice. They might look sportier, but they are hard, flat, and slick. Never mind that the quality of the leather is horrible. The Caprice seats with corduroy velour are much more comfortable and supportive.

It was just a 9C1 with a different trim. Even the Caprice was available with the LT-1. So the whole "heart of a Corvette" thing is a bit of a misnomer.
Especially since the heads, camshaft, compression ratio, exhaust manifolds, and tune were different than a Corvette. It's like saying that a 1977 pickup truck 350 is the same thing as an L82 Corvette 350.
Ulike all of the other engines GM made. They didn't stuff the LT into everything possible. They only came in B/D, Y, and F body..... The LT was in the Corvette first. One f the early concept cars was advertised by GM with a "Corvette LT1". The thing only lasted 92-97 they were sued over the design. The LT is really it's only little weird SBC. Which is part of why no one bothers with them...

I was the original owner of a nineteen ninety six impala super sport. That d*** thing had so many freaking problems. It piss me off. When I sold it It only had fifty three thousand miles on it. I was glad to see it go, and I'll never buy a chevy ever again.

Well I need a lift kit, gigantic, heavy wheels that make the car slower and handle terribly. Oh andeI need to totally ruins the ride quality so put rubber bands on those hyge wheels. Ph and one more thing, I have this idea for wheels where I can add even more unsprung mass and make the wheel bearings really scream for mercy. The best part is that my idea will create inertia that makes the car even worse in regards to handling. I think I'm gonna call them "spinners".
Well alright just as long as you don't put an extreme amount of camber on the wheels to where you've got like five percent of the tire for your contact patch.

Highway patrols across the country used them for its ability to endless cruise at 140PMH for hours straight. just type in 1996 Impala SS out runs Oklahoma Highway Patrol , watch and learn. the SS was named motor trends 4th fasted car produced in America in 1996 top speed 147mph

Impala ss didn't have the vette engine.vette had lt4.the later version was faster.this car was actually a slugthis guy doesn't know much.
The only LT4 was in 1996 6-speed Corvettes. The LT1 was the base engine in all 1992-1996 Corvettes, but it is significantly different than the B-body LT1.
They were slow. I beat one with a 1996 V-6 Camaro.
