We had our entire home painted with Pale Oak. It pairs well with BM White OC-151 for ceilings, trim, doors. Our color scheme: Walls: BM Pale Oak OC-20 Ceilings, trim, doors: BM White OC-151 Upper/lower kitchen cabinets: BM Steam AF-15 Kitchen island: BM Cinder AF-705
I used Pale Oak in my kitchen. I was trying to tone down the oak floors. I love it. I had my cabinets painted Super White, which seemed to stand on its own without borrowing the orange from the floor or taking on any greens or other colors. It turned out great. As others have said, the lighting and time of day makes a huge difference. It can look gray, and it can look almost beige. I agonized and studied for months. (before walls were "roasted pepper" red) .... it was a huge change and scary but I have loved it and will plan to take it into my family room and main entrance. I'm thinking of Dove Wing (even lighter) for front (east, shaded) dining room and living room. Preparing a house for sale, but want to enjoy it for awhile first. So far so good. Pale Oak is great if you don't want just be super trendy with gray, but still want to lean toward gray and still need to work with some creamy colors or beige that you may have in your home already.
My dilemma is that my kitchen cabinets are an ivory color (yellowish) and i am trying to tone the cabinets down. I love the Pale Oak.. I used it in my bathroom with White Dove trim. Looks great. I am hoping that the pale Oak will tone down the yellow in my cabinets.
Our basement is open concept and when we bought the house it was painted a bubble gum pink. Planning to paint in pale oak this weekend... fingers crossed it will be an improvement.
Going to use Pale Oak in my ensuite remodel. I also have alot of light in this room, light tiles and gray stone shower floor so going to try Chelsea Gray on one wall behind the white stand alone tub!
Sounds great Liz! We are doing an install today at a client's home where we painted their adjoining living and dining rooms in this colour, it looks GORGEOUS! Chees for watching.
Love all the colors you presented! You are so on it! Off Cource! I used Pale Oak in bedrooms, baths and as an accent wall in an open room area where all painted w/SW Pure White and I love it, the only time I thought it was too gray is in my office where there is not a good daylight. The shade looks different throughout the day however, all beautiful! The Chelsea is another beautiful color. I’m so glad to see your presentation, it confirmed my choice!
I have specified Benjamin Moore-Pale Oak quite a few times. I love the other colors you coordinated it with. It is a very versatile neutral. Although, I have found that is is very "chameleon" in different lighting and surroundings. Another Taupe that is on the warmer side which is one of my "go to" colors is Benjamin Moore-Edgecomb Gray HC-173. Wishing you a brightly colored day, Mary
I have painted my kitchen cabinets and fireplace mantel Sherwin Williams Moth Wing. Goes perfect with the brick on the fireplace. Now I am trying to find a light paint color for all my walls. Want to brighten the rooms.
Claire Jefford - As a very seasoned designer, I am painting my own home. Of course, we designers are our worst possible clients. I have been questioning my decision on the greige spectrum for too long. The builder used agreeable gray, I just cannot live with it. My final choice is Pale Oak. I came here for your great advice and sure enough, I found that you did indeed review this paint color. I am pairing it with as an accent wall in my kitchen BM Galt Blue, a green aqua. Thanks again or your great advice in both the consumer and the design community.
Hi Tonie. I agree, so hard to choose for ourselves, right?! Glad you found this video helpful. We have used Pale Oak on 2 different projects now and both with beautiful results. Good luck!
Was going to use pale oak in my kitchen and dining room, with an accent wall in aegean teal. Thank you. This was helpful and I love your color combos. I also selected white dove for the trim.
Mine master and guest room is pale oak. Love it. It looks almost too light in my guest room but perfect in my master. I can’t figure out why. Debating painting the whole house with pale oak
I love how I can actually see the colors. Other videos and pictures seem to be over exposed and I have a hard time seeing what they're describing! Thanks for such informative information!
I’m wanting to use Pale Oak but everywhere- the walls and ceilings and maybe trim …. But definitely walls and ceilings. Our home is 1939 with coved ceiling- I’m wanting a Spanish feeL. What do you think?
Tried to use this last mont for my kitchen reno. On the east facing wall, low light, it read slightly purple! Even though it looked terrific on the other walls, I couldn’t unsee the purple undertone. Had to go a different way.
I was looking at this for a whole house color and do worry about pinkish/purple. Will probably play it safer and go Agreeable Gray. Not really wanting purple, but most grays I see too much green. Hard to find something that is good in all lights.
I don't have the colour boards to hand at the moment to look at these colours together. Grab paint chips of each to see how they look with one another. If you already have Alabaster for your trim, paint a large board in Pale Oak and put it up beside the trim to see how it looks -then you will have your decision!
Hello Claire, my entire house is pale oak with simply white trim. Upstairs I have painted "wedding silver" (ralph loren) which is not available anymore. downstairs in my newly refinished basement I added an entertainment center with lighting that I would like to paint an accent color.. Couch will be a dove blue from Joybird. Neutral very light gray/beige carpet. Any ideas on a striking accent color for the entertainment center? Thanks and loved your video!!!
Hi Megan. Your home sounds lovely!! I adore Pale Oak, such a great colour. In my Essential Colour Guide there are a variety of striking paint colours to use as a fun accent colour with Pale Oak. You can get your guide here, well worth the small investment for all this inspiration --> clairejefford.com/product/pale-oak/
Wonderful video! Thank you for the comparison. I'm contemplating "Pale Oak" as the color for my entire main level, and I'm torn between that and playing it SUPER SAFE with my initial choice, Sherwin Williams' "Eider White." This video has me leaning a little bit more towards "Pale Oak." That color palette at the end is gorgeous!
Hi Shannon. Glad to hear that you may be stepping out of the 'super safe zone' and trying Pale Oak. I have yet to use it for myself or for a client project, so I'd love to hear from you after you've used it! Thanks for watching.
Pale Oak and Balboa Mist are so similar, so if you like them both the same and they both look fabulous with whatever you using it for, just pick one. Edgecomb Gray is slightly darker and has a green undertone.
Claire what would you use for a long hallway with a skylight , pale oak was suggested but I love color (blue especially) something pale in a seaglass with taupe. Thanx looking forward to your suggestion.

Sometimes this can read pink, depending on the lighting. Take a look at Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore, it has a green undertone and is a lovely neutral.
I have never used that colour Angela, we typically use Benjamin Moore colours. You can grab my free download on how to choose the right paint colours, and that can help you with creating a colour scheme for your home. Clikc the link here clairejefford.com/ccd-freebies/
So timely!! I’m trying to decide between Pale Oak and Gray Mist as my dining room colors with Dove White ceiling, moldings and trim. I have deep Mahogany furnuiture and bold wall decor peices, and I was thinking one of these colors would be a nice neutral backdrop for my dark furniture. My dining room faces the west, west facing windows so the natural light is interesting. I want to keep my all color light. What are the undertones of Pale Oak and Gray Mist? I am finding that I am super attracted to pink and purple undertones, good or bad. At least I’m consistant! 😊
Hey Janet! I haven't used either of those colours myself, but agree that with your furniture, Pale Oak could make for a lovely back drop. Try painting large sample boards like mine with each colour, placing them around the room at different times of the day with a white background. You won't be comparing it to the current wall colour when you put up a white piece of paper or board in behind it.
Claire Jefford Consulting Hi, I loved the video, it was very helpful. I have a quarry redish/ browinsh tile in my kitchen and I’m planing to paint the walls with pale oak and the cabinets, trim, etc... in white dove. What do you think? Will this colors works for my type of floor? 😬 I actually want to paint the top cabinets on white dove and the lower cabinets in sage green. Too crazy?! My house faces the west.
Claire. I am drawn to painting my living room with x2 walls pale oak and x2 walls with Stiffkey blue (F&B)... What are you're thoughts of having a grey sofa in the room and 'antiquey' wood style furniture? Wil the grey sofa work OK?
My initial thought would be why paint 2 walls one colour and the other 2 walls a different colour? Choose one wall to be an accent wall and make sure you are 'accenting' something. Like a fireplace or cool architectural feature in the space.
Enjoy your videos , I was wondering if you could suggest colors to repaint exterior cement and concrete steps or pathways that will work well with my White House with black shutters , I use Benjamin Moore .. Thanks
Look to any stone that you have or siding that is perhaps not just black and white. They will always lean one way or another when it comes to undertones. If everything is black and white, you can basically do whatever colour you want and then tie it together with some outdoor accessories in similar tones.
Lovely video :) I love Pale Oak... I had it in my master bedroom and it was my fav. I'm currently building and thinking about doing all of my lower trim and doors in Pale Oak with White Dove walls and upper trim. Any thoughts???
Claire, do you think Revere Pewer plays well with Pale Oak? I have an open concept liv/dine/kitchen area. All are pale oak and I was considering using Revere Pewter in the kitchen. Thank you!
Need paint help! My home has some southwestern notches above the doorways, like the stair step looking ones. The kitchen cabinets as well as trim and doors are all oak colored. Right now the home is a sensational sand color and also a turquoise blue which I am not a fan of. Would pale oak be something to pair with this type of style or would a white suffice better? The counter tops are a darker brown and the tile around the pellot stove area is darker brown also. But my kitchen table is a white with the farm wood top (farmhouse look). I am more into the farmhouse look than the southern... Need serious helps. Thanks!!
Hey Coupon Mama, yes, I would suggest you get some in-person help from a professional. There are way too many things to consider that I can't confidently advise from reading a comment. My Free guide might also be quite helpful as well. You can get that here --> clairejefford.com/ccd-freebies/
Although I haven't used Storm Cloud Gray by Benjamin Moore, nor do I have a large painted board in that colour, I do think they would play nicely together if paired well with other complimentary décor and design finishes.
Hi Claire! I love your blog. I've used Pale Oak and it's beautiful! I think it's the perfect off-white color without being too light, so there is still nice contrast with our trim. I'm curious, is there a good color that has just a hair less of a purple/pink undertone but would read similarly on the walls as pale oak?
Hi Kelly! You can try Edgebomb Gray and Classic Gray as alternatives. However, remember that while they are similar to Pale Oak, they do have slight green undertones. Thanks for watching!
We are getting ready to paint our breakfast room in Pale Oak, but I’m unsure if I want to keep that color going in our kitchen. Our kitchen only has one window (old house), so not much natural light. If we were to use a different color in the kitchen what would you recommend to flow from the breakfast room? We’ve already had light green in there for years.
Hi Dallas. Thank you for your review! My husband and I just finished painting the main level of our home Pale Oak... still trying to decide if I like it or not. This color is very fickle in my home. The paint can't decide if it wants to be a perfect warm grey or a cool blue. Depending on the wall and how much sun were getting that day, the paint looks different. I was going for a very light grey with warm undertones. I knew this color was a little on the cooler side but also read that it can look warm in certain lights. I was a little disappointed to find out just how cool it looks in my home. Overall, it's growing on me, but I probably wouldn't use this color again. We still have not picked the color of the trim and ceiling so I'm hoping that we still have an opportunity to make it look perfect. Just wanted to share my experience!
Would pale oak look good with warm accents such as warm beige stone if our home is north facing? 🤔 I’m concerned about how it will look since my home doesn’t get direct much sunlight 😅 Thankkks! Love your videos 👍🏻
Sure it would, but more importantly, you want to check it with your fixed elements like counter tops, back splash and flooring. Here is a free download I created for choosing the right paint colour the first time --> clairejefford.com/ccd-freebies/ Hope that helps Brad!
Wrought Iron by BM is a nice dark tone that would work well. If you want to go even more black, try Onyx. But the Wrought Iron would be my choice, even though it's not really a black.

It does in certain spaces, which is odd to me. But that is why you should always check any paint colours on large boards first and move them around the room at different times of the day to see how a colour reads in your home.
