Solo Camping The West Highland Way in 3 Minutes

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- The West Highland Way runs for 96 miles from Milgavie, Glasgow, to Fort William, right through the heart of the Highlands. It was Scotland's first officially designated long-distance hiking route and that, combined with the fact that it boasts mind-blowing scenery for a relatively easy walk each day, makes it one of the most popular trails in the UK. I camped along the trail in 2018 and in 2022 went back to wild camp the WHW.

Stay WILD!
That was just delightful, thank you Abbie! I've walked WHW last year and it was my first long-distance hike and I loved every second of it. Seeing your video made me incredibly nostalgic, I hope that one day I will be able to return to Scotland and walk both WHW and Great Gen Way in one go, what a journey that would be! Love your channel, it takes me back to the best trip of my life :)
Best three minutes I've spent in ages.
Had a huge emotional breakdown right where you pitched at 2:51. Thank you for this lovely video, really brings me back.
Wow. In such a short video you were able to capture not only the beauty of the land but also the fun and excitement of the adventure. Very well done.
Thank you!
@@AbbieBarnesWILD hey do you know if there is opportunity to chrage things on the way at any point please
On the WHW for round 2 and mate, it’s awesome to see the same trail from your perspective at the same time. Boom. The power of YT.
Man, Abbie, great. The cow on the path was awesome. “You shall not pass!”
Hahaha, yes!!!
Another awesome video Abbie and this walk is now on my list of walks to do thanks to you. Keep smiling because you got a beautiful smile and the world needs to see more of it.
Such a beautiful country
A great short video. Landscape photos are interesting and breathtaking. Can hardly wait for the full length feature!
Sure was great! Stay tuned :)
I enjoy watching these 3 minute series of videos and watching the full version before walking a path myself, thanks
Oooooh those sweet sweet memories! Thanks for the clip, reckognized alot of it :D!
Abby, I think that's the most beautiful scenery I've seen in one of your videos! Amazing, makes me want to fly across the pond and have a go at it! Great job!

Hi Abbs! You're well good at the whole editing process etc!!. Eternal optimism of someone with a happy shiney outlook is more better than any equivalent in the known universe...
I did the full thing at 11 years old it is so amazing
Your videos always make me smile, even this one where you were hardly in it at all! I’d love to travel across the pond and experience some of your trails
Thank you!
Awesome video
great vid - looks like you had a mixture of rain and sun... thanks for sharing
Yup!!
Music matches the landscape perfectly
Outstanding video Abbie beautiful country looks like you had lots of fun. Stay safe my friend
Thanks for watching!!
Thank you for your videos Abbie :) I was introduced to the The West Highland Way when I met my partner, he had done it multiple times, I was new to long distance walking and boy was it a challenge 😝 I have successfully finished it once using a bag carrying service and then another time carrying my bag, would love to go again sometime soon, it does wonders for my mental health 😁 keep on exploring 👍🏻
Love the video. Following in you footsteps mid-May.
Rely Good condensed video of the WHW, Hopefully I may get to do it one day, TFS, Take Care Abbie, Les.
Thank you! Stay WILD! Abbie
I'm doing it in April/May 2020 over two days with a summit of Ben Nevis on the third for charity :) I can't wait!
@@lovelycupoftea507 Haha perfect timing! I had to cancel because of the covid lock down... but I actually leave this Thursday to finally do it haha
@@EvenWaysMusic did you do it this time !
@@CryptoScotAllan I did! Weather was rough but I had to go regardless haha It took 4 days wild camping it and did Ben Nevis on the 5th. Was really pleased with that, given my mate couldn't make it so I had to go solo and carry all the gear ahahah no, I absolutely loved it :) The midges on Rannoch Moor can do one though!
excellent video! cant wait to tick this one off my list in May !
So beautiful! I've been watching most of your videos this past week! You have a great way to inspire all of us!! Thank you for your amazing videos 🤗🤗🤗
Thanks for following! Stay WILD! Abbie
Nice short film. That was my first long distance walk over 5 days. Would wild camp it if I was to do it again.
Cheers
Robin
Great stuff!
The WHW is Scotland in a nutshell. Simply great!
Awesome vid. Just discovered your stuff. Cheers from the Canadian Rockies. Mid winter here today. Nice to see green.
Hey Abs😘.. Really thinking about this as my post lockdown adventure....this is a brilliant vid..typed on WHW..and I went to this without realising it was you 🤣👍
This is gonna be my 2020 summer
Fantastic inspirational video! 👌
Nice video Abbie - typical scottish weather ☔️☀️☔️
Yup!!!!
Great video Abbie
Enjoyed that. Some good memories.
I can’t wait to see this one!
3minutes jesus, took me 4 days.
I loved that... Looks an amazing walk...
Sure is ace!
Wonderful video. Thanks for posting.
Brilliant Abbie 😉👍👣👣
Nice video! 👍👍🔥🔥
Every Scot has to love Abbie as she truly tells us how to love nature .
So pretty! Now there’s a trail I’d like to thru-Hike!
Yes!!
great video thanks
I'v umbed and I'v arred as to wether I should walk the WHW because when I looked at the route on a map it seems to stay close to the A82 for
a good part of the way which put me off, but since I'v watched your 3 minute vlog it has wet my appetite to look at the route again.
Love it! Enjoy! Stay WILD! Abbie
Well done, Abbie Barnes! Well done!
that encapsulates the walk :)
nice vid, what month did you do this walk?
Such a nice video! What's the brand of your tent? :)
Since it’s so short, location captions would be very popular please?
A great video, as always. I attempted the WHW at the beginning of September 2018 but after 4 days / 40 miles had to abandon the attempt. My pack was too heavy and the weather was atrocious. However, what really "killed it" was the fact that I became unwell and really couldn't continue. Hoping to make a second attempt early May this year.
Sorry about the weather! So great that you're headed back. Sounds like a good choice to come back for another day :)
best of luck Ken. a heavy bag is a real killer ! I was fortunate enough to have blue skies and too hot [at times] weather in may/june 2018
Great video! What time of year was this?
I feel like there was quite a lot of civilisation along the way. Was it an irritating amount of concrete and railways?
Lovely views of the W.H.W. & a great video and channel in general :) What was the folk tune you used in the video?
I think this one was called Celtic Flame :)
If its raining or has been raining recently do not walk along the Loch Lomond edge as lots of exposed tree roots on uneven ground very slippy best just walk the road about 50yds in and pop to waters edge every couple miles for the view.
What was the chair lift you went on?
Music credit?
Tapped along the whole time.
which month is this video from? did you feel safe hiking alone? :)
Hi beautiful way, im from south Spain, its possible to do it with a mountain Bike? appreciate a knowlege answer
I walked the WHW and GGW last summer. I have not seen many mountain bikers on the WHW (one to be precise) to be honest. Especially the section between Rowardennan and Inverarnan is a lot of climbing over rocks and such, not really accessible by bike. However, the Great Glen Way is often cycled! It starts in Fort William (end point of the WHW) and ends in Inverness. The scenery just as enjoyable as along the WHW :)
@@DutchRain Ty Sr, will try Great Glen Way, have a nice day
Hi, I just started my research on the trail... Would you say it is possible to take a foldable handcart with you on the way?... It looks like there are only some spots were it would be a bit tricky :)
People going on about the rain, that's part of it!
Hi Abby, would you recommend West Highland Way or Great Glen Way? Which do you prefer?
Depends what you are looking for in a trip :) Both have pros and cons!
Abbie what month did you go? I want to do this but so afraid of coming all the way from Australia to only get rained on.
I went in July for this trip. Last year I hiked in April, which is what I'd recommend :)
Is the whw good signed? I mean do i find the path easily?
Very well signed. Always take a map though!
Hi Abbie, Great video, going to be completing the WHW myself either May or Sept, depending on work commitments. Will there be a longer version of the walk at some point? If I remember correctly in your packing video, you were going to fly up. Was it easy o find gas when you got there as I know you can’t take it on a plain.
Love it! Yes a longer film will be out very soon! Editing around my Monday uploads is slow going but I will get it up eventually!!
Oh,. and I got gas in Glasgow :)
Did you find the WHW okay for camping spots (wild or otherwise)? I'd love to backpack/camp it the whole way.
WHW is very "civilized" - you'll find campsites on the way and because it's Scotland, wild camping is allowed, too. The only part that requires more planning is early stage - along Loch Lomond where are camping restrictions. But even there you may find campsites and other places to pitch the tent. Good luck!

Thank you!
Hi Abbie, loved the video, brought back great memories of walking the WHW last June with a group. Fantastic weather throughout and stunning scenery. Check out The West Highland Way song by Kenneth McKellar on You Tube, we sang this catchy tune as we hiked.
Great you did the trail too!! Thanks for watching!
My 2019 challenge WHW in May
Amazing!!
I will have to wait till September the 15th then it is my turn. 😋
2 weeks! 😀
Must be record time to do it 3 minutes. I prefer to take my time though.
This is gorgeous! When did you do your hike?
August last year :)
This is beautiful would a person of color be welcomed on this hike ?
Of course! :)
Still raining I see ... I got soaked for 4 days
Looks wet.
3:58 man at the end like wot the hell she doing :-)
Hahaha, I had that a lot!!!
The man at the end is thinking what a lovely smile she has.
I’m Scottish
Would you say the west highland way is dog friendly?? Asking for a friend... he's a dog :P
No. Taking dogs on long distance walks is fraught with problems. I know from experience. 😬
@@strickostricko Please could you be more specific?
Ian Roberts They don’t know that it’s a big day ahead, in my experience they over-exert themselves early in the day. They can usually handle the mileage for one day, but it’s relentless day after day, sore paws, cuts, abrasions, it also takes you out of your rhythm and the emmersive experience of a through- hike, checking they’re ok and not upto no good. I don’t think they enjoy it or are physiologically suitable for multi-day long distance treks.
Roger Field good advice thank you
we brought our friend when we did west highland way.
