    ENGLISH LYRICS:
    A lifetime of war
I look around and I see my home fade away
My time at home now feels far too short
Just a youth, barely a man when duty called me
If i get to see my home again, that I do not know
Amongst friends from my village, I went out to fight
    And the world burned
    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?
Went to fight for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there where death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall no song is heard
Challenging our destiny one more time
    Far from home
    Baptized and die in battle
    And the world burned
    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?
And when my time runs out
    Who cares then?
    They fight on
Does a soldier get a worthy end?
    To fall asleep
    Pass away
    And never wake up
    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

I am an USMC widow. This is the song that moved me so much... I learned it in Swedish so I could be a part of this epic sing-along. I've never looked at the english translation. I don't have to.

@@AriasandtheNATIONI appreciate that! I didn't even date for 11yrs...then fate brought me Charlie... he wasn't in the official military, he worked for Blackwater for 8yrs... so he has all the skills I admire in a man, and is still a war Veteren. I had given up on love, but it found me. If anyone is feeling like I did... don't give up! Love can happen when you least expect it!

As a swede i can assure you that the english translation on the video are spot on. (unlike the english version that changes the story a bit). That makes it wild to me, how hard this cuts and how poetic the swedish can be sometimes, to tell such a story in lyrics, which has to have a certain rhythm and cadence.

    • @494Farrell
      @494Farrell 7 місяців тому +3

The English version is a good listen and has its own place talking about the tragedy of the overall conflict. But this one just hits different, so much more impactful and personal, and this performance is just incredible, the chorus with just drums and clapping is one the most powerful bits of music have ever listened to.

The best music lecture I ever went to was on Arnold Schönberg's String Trio. It involved a string trio playing the piece then the lecturer giving a lecture with the trio playing excerpts then a second play through.
The amazing thing was there were SEVEN students in the auditorium and that included me who wasn't a music student.
So playing the full song again has a great pedigree in my books.

I have been in the crowd for this song at least 5 times, i can say the hit in the feels is different live, you don't well up in the eyes, you well up with pride that you and several thousand others are basically singing praise for fallen warriors of any time really. This is why sabaton is special, i have been to their own festival 5 times and each time they played this, people from so many different countries sang this in swedish.
Also, Joakim (the singer) does not have to sing a SINGLE word in this song, if you just listen just a little you can hear how the crowd NEVER stops singing. It is amazing live.

One of the best reactions I have seen. The interaction with the crowd in this song is electric and immense. Sabaton has the rare ability to reach into your soul, pressing all the emotional buttons, making you feel pride and sadness for those who sacrificed all for their homelands. I saw them at the Ryman in Nashville, and they didn't play "En Livstid i Krig" but they did play "Gott Mitt Uns" in Swedish. We didn't do a very good job singing along though. best concert I ever attended. (Epica was awesome as well).

Was at this show, pretty much in the middle, immensely emotional. Was just before things shut down in 2020, so ended up being the last concert for 18 months. One of my best concert memories. Great reaction, and a nice touch that you got the historical context that this is not just about a Swedish soldier, but rather a young conscripted farmhand and not really a professional soldier or mercenary.

Glad I clicked on this. Don’t know them. But this is beautiful. ❤
I hate wars but I love soldiers. Those are brave people who decide to protect others by risking their own lives. ❤ And I mourn for all the parents that lose their children because they were sent to fight other people‘s children. (Sometimes for no good reason) 😢
Samaltau by Dimash is also sung from the perspective of a soldier who doesn’t know if he will ever see his country again. There are also additional circumstances, but similar emotions. The song is also hauntingly beautiful and sad.

Just before this clip started Joakim said no one carries around a lighter anymore but you all have phones right? So turn on your lights for this one. Then at the start he said totally wounderful, my friends, let's sing together en livstid i krig. They had sold out the arena for this show so we were 10766 metalheads in the arena and needless to say, it was one hell of a show.

The best way to put things into perspective. Some regions of Germany lost 60% of its population. Let's say you are married. You have a sibling, and your parents. You are drafted a week before your wife gives birth. You could return, at the end of the war with your parents dead, your wife dead, your sibling dead, and your child, who you never met, returning to the war alongside you, you never knowing he is your son, as he returns to the son he himself never met. That should put into perspective what a 30 year long war with 8,000,000 dead is like.

There is a channel that’s called Sabaton History where a historian and the band talks about the history behind the songs if you’re interested.

Great reaction!🤘 I never get tired of this song. I've actually been standing in a crowd (a bit smaller than this) singing this song. It's very powerful! I claim this song as our 3rd Swedish National anthem. 🇸🇪

I made it and sent it to Sabaton because the old translation looked auto-translated. Only a couple things I wish I had changed but it's good enough.

I have a nice fact about humans. In the last 3,500 years of human history, there have been more than 3,250 years of war and only 250 years of peace. That is one year of peace for every 13 years of war. During the same period, over 8,000 peace treaties were concluded that were supposed to be eternally valid.
    Love you!

The thing with this song is: listening to the English version of the song, it takes an Objective view of the 30 year war. Now, if you choose to go for the Swedish version of the same song, it tells the story of your average Swedish conscripted soldier, which makes the whole thing so much more Subjective. And That is what makes the song so much more powerful and hits you on the feels on a whole different level when sung in Swedish.

If you listen carefully you can hear a voice that is clean, well that is not my voice.. I have never got emotional before but this got me a little seeing this performance again from this "side". Not many dry eyes after this.... Epic live performance by Sabaton🤘😥

My favourite Sabaton song, and I also prefer it in Swedish despite never having learned any (I know some Norwegian). Hits me every time.
