This is awesome, I just started carving trays. I'm using white oak so I knew it would be challenging. In your case, how long do you have to let it dry before you can finish it?
Great! Yes, white oak is beautiful but pretty tough. For the bowls it’s usually 3-4 weeks before they are dry enough to do the finishing cuts on. Happy carving!

Alot of folks don't understand thos or why they have a harder time going in curtain directions. Had to figure thos out on my own .
Definitely takes some time! Hand tools are a great way to learn about grain direction too 👍

I am left handed as well, and also have a terrible issue with clumsiness. However, if you love something, you'll make it work.
Are you using green wood?
Yes, bowls are all carved green and then allowed to slowly dry once very thin
