My 2018 Silverado stock unit is the same way. You can connect to bluetooth for phone calls and music but to use Andriod auto I must plug in. I believe they build them this way to save your phones battery.
It's crazy how cheap Toyota is with their interiors all of this stuff that you installed is 10 years old In many other manufacturers. that install looked pretty difficult for probably 95% of the population that would want this done. Nice vid!
Yeah well the stuff lasts. I'd rather have a 4runner's legendary reliability than a gm or ford or jeep/ram that breaks down every 2 miles
I put a Halo 9 in my overlanding Honda Element (yep, Honda Element, 3in lift, 23Zero RTT, etc) just based totally on your recommendation and how it works with GAIA on my iPhone. You can tell GAIA and Alpine you totally sold one. Used it this past weekend on a trip to the VA highlands. It was awesome!! I am Patreon follower and subscriber- y’all are awesome! Inspired me to build my first rig.

I went with Kenwood a year ago never had a problem with wireless connection and Gaia works perfectly. Wife wanted apple cafe play soooo. Lol Crutch field is great though !!
Off topic...but...we just spent two weeks in Kofa. Thanks so much. We are from Florida and got stuck in Death Valley when the park closed. It seems almost safer to stay and Boondock than to try to head home. Watched your video and headed to the Kofa.Thanks!
3rd Tacoma Owners **DO NOT PURCHASE THIS UNIT WITHOUT READING THIS FIRST**
Pros:
*Big Screen, easy to use and access (no tactile buttons).
*Equalizer presets amongst the best I’ve heard.
*Maestro vehicle information features! Lots of details to stay informed about what’s going on with your vehicle. Even check engine light explanations!
Cons:
*Price, $999!
*No wireless CarPlay, not a big deal until you experience a unit with wireless CarPlay.
*Bug with CarPlay phone calls that has not been addressed by Alpine (even after several emails to them). This bug is for iPhone 11 and later users (that I know of). Calls are distorted and cannot be used. The only was to make phone calls is FaceTime Audio.
*If you drive with polarized sunglasses, you will not be able to see the screen when driving. There is a protective film that the unit comes with that makes it hard to see the screen.
*Screen resolution no the best.
Overall - if you’re looking for a unit that is big and easy to see, this unit is great. There are too many cons for a unit that retails for $999 (unit only). Ultimately, i returned mine and after lots of research I went with the Kenwood DMX-906s...for less than half the price($499)!!!!!!! Wireless CarPlay, amongst the top in screen resolution and more audio (equalizer) options. The deal breaker for me was the bug with the phone calls and Alpine not reaching back out to me. In my opinion, customer service and how much a company is willing to back the consumer of their products is key. What also key is that you do your research. This is my opinion and recollection of my experience with Alpine. Hope this helps.

@ 4:10 I found this exact knife while fishing with my dad. I got out the car and right at my feet was this knife. A little dirty but it's clean now and doing great.
Kevin your idea of "straight forward" and my idea of "straight forward" are two completely different things. If I ever get that for my 2018 4runner somebody will have to put it in for me. It looks awesome. Let's see how it works down the line. Take care and be safe out there.

I'm seriously considering this exact head unit but I may update from my 2013 4Runner, before doing it. I'm not about to spring for a 2020, because they're just too spendy for a senior on a fixed income. Just the initial start of yours was impressive. If my GAIA will work on it, wow!

I completely agree on hardwired connections! Way more reliable than wireless.
For those on a budget, u can get an (I got a Joying) Android car stereo instead...and they're way more customizable. The newest ones have Intel processors and 4g. I got a 10" model for $250!

I look forward to seeing how well Gaia works on it. I've been looked to move the backup camera from the tiny screen in my rear view mirror, and would be really tempted to get this if I could use it for Gaia instead of my iPad!
I own a 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road with Fox shocks and a Magnuson supercharger installed last year!... I am a passionate overlander and just think the 4Runner is the best vehicle sold in the North American market!... This is a cool upgrade here.. My husband just installed that or a similar one in his Pro and absolutely loves it.. I am content with mine but also have mounts for tablets for navigation etc.. I use to have a removable Laptop mount too but lost it in our recent move to Northern British Columbia.. I love electronics that improve our adventures!

I would HIGHLY recommend the Sirius Satellite Radio. While I lived in Armstrong Iowa between 2000 till 2005 I had this Radio in my Bronco, what a blast. 🤠
Sirius and XM merged in 2008. Same company now.
I cant wait to see more about this unit. I'm nowhere near needing this but it sure is interesting to see new tech .
The PSI display is rad. That wiring harness was scary tho!
It's very easy to integrate the OEM microphone into the Alpine headunit. Just a matter of tracing the wiring and splice it into the Alpine.

Does this radio integrate HVAC controls and seat heater functions that the original Toyota did?

Good Clean look.
My bluetooth acted stupid for a while. Once it crapped out & it refused to reset. I had to delete my phone from the 4Runner & delete the vehicle from the phone. Then set the bluetooth up to an old phone. Only then, I was able to get My Galaxy S7 Edge to work again. Pain in the azz, just when you wanna use it the most, it will crap out on you. I found the factory GPS directions would generally work. Then I would get close to my destination, and it would totally get lost, and send me away from the destination, very frustrating. When you have to rely on Google maps or Waze....you think wtf. I had an Infiniti with Factory GPS and it was very accurate.
Definitely glad to see another install video for reference. I already jumped in on this unit (waiting for arrival) but I'm curious to see your thoughts after a couple weeks.
Just a question. Why couldn't you just swap the head units instead of all vents and hazard buttons, etc? Reason I ask is because I would want the black trim piece better then what they give you.
Do you think this would make accessing the HVAC controls a pain in a 3rd gen?
OH great...my bank account looks like it's going to take a hit, if this unit is as amazing as it looks. There are two areas that Toyota really could have improved the T4R; radio/nav and KEEPING a dang V8 option. . Look forward to seeing / hearing more on this unit.
Are you really running 40 to 50 psi on the road? The door frame sticker says 32 IIRC.
There’s a software update that fixes that on the OEM radio by the way.
I tried to install the update but it never reads my usb. Any tips?

Can you do a video about your ham radio set up?
If this doesn't give you the input and functionality you're looking for you may want to consider an android radio. They are very customizable. Good luck.
@16:43 because Toyota is infamous like that. The price of the vehicle reflects todays market and yet the components of the products offered do not. They are probably betting you'll still buy it because of the reliabity of the vehicle.
I am also not a fan of the silver bezel ... I think I'd paint it black before installing it. Silver-painted plastic just always looks tacky IMO.
😩 Ya'll snatched the head unit right off my build wish list. Lol I was hoping to hold off but I got a feeling you're gonna make me want it sooner. My only concern with this one is how well the big screen will hold up to the trails. Definitely looking forward to your T&E. Hope you're all doing well in NM.

There’s this company that makes a dongle to allow for wireless CarPlay on aftermarket head units like your alpine. Look up the cplay2air!
Are you able to control the JBL subwoofer independently from the door speakers? I used the Maestro adapters for our 2011 4Runner and lost the ability to control it separately. Trying to figure out if I connected something wrong.
I wonder if this will work with the OEM AUdio+ unit I have installed. It simply "intercepts" the factory wiring harness.

Would this fit 2011 sr5? Doesnt have the lcd touch screen, just the small orange screen.

So after doing some research, this is not available on Amazon and they have no idea when it will be back next. Doing some more looking around, I’m not exactly sure which one I should go with. Do you have any recommendations?
And then there are those of us who are "old school" or just too old to learn new tricks. We use Delorme paper maps, kick the tires to see how much air is in them, refuse to communicate with others unless it is by CB and we are talking to log trucks for location,. We found our 2017 Ford to have too many gizmos for our liking. Including an automatic transmission. Oh how I miss my old 1968 F250 with deep enough gears to climb a tree. Top speed was only 60 mph wound out tight and the radio was only AM. But, I understood it and it understood me. Newer vehicles are just too busy for us "old school." All that being said, I will look forward to see how the new gizmo works.

It doesn't affect it too bad. Just diverted some of it downward to your legs. It's kinda nice

You can actually lower it and get good flow. Just covers the knobs slightly.

Hello gentlemen! I am looking for a video review on to upgrade a factory radio unit in a 2020 Toyota 4runner Limited, for Pioneer is my all times favor.
Can you see into the dash behind the unit? Like a gap or is that closed off? Great vid kevin
my 2014 tundra needs apple carplay and it would be nice to get rid of the apple ipad and the dash mounting. but $1500 is too high when a new ipad air is less and does more. its all coming down to how gaia works on it and what other tools or apps allow me to watch obd 2 data.
Does Alpine provide a black color radio bezel option?
Very nice that they have dash replacement ready to go, it seemed like a seamless enough install despite seeing you in the sun and by the end it was nightfall. Lol I know this will be covered later probably but is the face detachable?
I wish you had started off by mentioning the cost. Unless it comes with an autopilot module, I would never pay that much for a receiver.
Do you feel like the plastic mounting brackets are sufficient to mount and hold the radio in place or do you think the metal brackets from the stock radio would be better? I'm debating if it's worth taking my metal brackets of and using those instead when I install mine

I wish you could have shown a little more clearly the disassembly of the dash panel to the left of the steering wheel and the complete running of the microphone. are there any good resources you can recommend for seeing how to take panels off and put them back on the 4runner? Other than that excellent video!

Great video. I also have this installed on my '19 TRD Pro. Do you have any issues with slightly lower call audio volume when you're going through carplay? I get normal volume levels in every other way.
Haven't noticed that specifically but there is a difference from input to input that's annoying at times.

I was in a limited that had this exact unit in it, yes it does obstruct a third of the vent flow
