So the reset claim gives you a new random gold distribution! Is it worth it to go all the way down to dig the gold from the first claim before reseting then? Instead of getting stuck with something random?

Well it depends on many things really. For me I wanted to get digging in my seasonal run. so instead of using up more time getting the rest of the dirt on the bottom I chose to move on. Yes when doing that you take the risk of getting a claim with mediocre gold on it. But I will dig through it fast and reset again. Hopefully with a lot more gold.
