Hi Rebecca, I have just followed this video and dyed my first two skeins of yarn with kool Aid. They look awesome! Thank you for sharing your learning experience with dying. I think I watch more of your fiber unboxing because I also want to learn how to spin yarn. I had been thinking about dying but the thing that caused me to do this now is the project that I am knitting needs some speckled yarn and I was amazed to discovery how very little I had.. I did not see any that I felt was right and then I got a hold of some chi sheep Red Heart yarn on clearance.
Ooooooh, please do a knitted swatch with gradients! I'm actually thinking of a pale rainbow... imagine a knitted blank, with drips (maybe with 2-3 shades of each color for variety) shifting from red down to magenta, passing through the entire color spectrum! I bet that would make lovely yarn!
I love it! I’m a little disappointed that I can’t dye my ugly cotton yarn, but I’ll buy a new acrylic blend yarn hank and see what happens. Your yarn dye turned out gorgeous! Btw I’m a new subscriber and I look forward learning from you bcuz you are highly recommended. Have a blessed day. 💕🙏🏼✌🏼🌻
Awe thank you! I do have some videos with speckling cotton. Rit dye powder works well for that from my testing. I started with 20% wool 80% acrylic. Speckles may be subtle on a blend like they but if there's wool then you'll see pigment.
Thank you Rebecca for another great video. I've been wanting to dye speckled yarn and have tried with Kool-Aid. No speckles, but great varigated for scarf/shawlette.
Rebecca your yarn looked great. Malabrigo speckled yarn is it process the same way you do it. Wondering how they get those small dots separated by several colors. Enjoyed this video. Thank you👍🏼👏🏼
I love your videos, although I'm not a spinner. I am tempted to dye some wool for my next knitting project. I'd love to see how you would dye some cotton because I'm interested in dyeing some cross stitch fabric. Thanks so much for this technique. I may try this one for a hat for my son, probably in a different palette, though!
did you happen to write a book on your different trials and error when it comes to dyeing yarns ? There is not very many books yet on hand dyeing yarns . enjoy watching your videos fun and easy.
Would you possibly be able to achieve stronger colour by just speckling on straight food colouring without watering it down at all? Thanks for sharing your experiments. They are so fun to watch!
Absolutely! Straight from the food coloring bottle might be super dark, but I could certainly have made my mixed dyes much more concentrated to get a darker color.
I love every bit of this tutorial! I must know... you mentioned that you're using a canning steamer? Do you have any information about the steamer itself, the brand, or perhaps the pot you used? I'd love to know the details and recreate this myself! Thanks, love your tutorials!
I think it was a "Granite Ware 0707-1 Steel/Porcelain Water-Bath Canner with Rack, 21.5-Quart" pot. I got it at Costco this fall to help me make some pickles.
I haven't tested this exactly, but I have run a swatch of superwash wool/nylon blend dyed with food coloring and laundry detergent through the washing machine and it came out with no fading.
I let the yarn steam for about 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can wrap up the yarn in plastic wrap (or a covered microwave safe dish) and microwave in 2-3 min increments until the yarn feels super hot.
I usually hang the yarn to dry for a couple of days. Right now I have a spin dryer which will remove a lot of the liquid and then the yarn is dry in about 24 hours or less. If it is humid, 2-3 days without the spin dryer.
Can you dye chunky yarn ? I have a gift idea for my mom . she loves purple and I don't like the colors they have for chunky yarns . would like to figure out how to make midnight purple to Violet and orchids with speckled purple in it .
Mary Whitlow this would absolutely work on chunkier yarns, too. the speckles might spread out a bit more depending on how fluffy the yarn is. I have some videos dyeing roving with these techniques.
This one turned out really pretty ❣️ What is “Rebecca colorway”? I’ve heard u say this lots and also others say too. Is this a person ? Lol 😂 Where did u get that metal basket thingy at? What’s it called.. I’ve never seen any like this one before.
Hi, Susan. What type of yarn are you using? These food coloring techniques will only work on protein based fibers (wool, silk, etc.) This won't work on cotton or acrylic yarns, although I have had success with 80% acrylic/20% wool yarns. You also need to make sure you have an acid source, either in your dye bath or presoaked on your yarn. Good luck!
I reckon this is the prettiest yarn I ever saw you do. I love it
That really looked amazing. Love your dye experiments.. thank you for sharing.
You're very welcome! It makes me so happy that people enjoy them.
You are my new favorite asmr channel 💖 it‘s so fantastic to watch
Awe! I sometimes get a bit loud, but I'm glad that you enjoy the content.
Love the way this dying experiment turned out. Happy to see a new video from you!
Beautiful! Looks like a candy I used to eat.
Thank you 😋
Very pretty!!
Thank you! 😊
Cool video! Love your videos!
pretty cool. love to see a swatch what look like. thanks for sharing.

I loved how this turned out. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻
You're very welcome!
So pretty!! Thank you for this video. I'm going to do this with my boys.
You should try putting the liquid dye into a spray bottle on the mist setting, I bet you get a great speckled effect
I haven't done the sprays on yarn in a long time- but I love doing it on blanks for speckles.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials have you used sprays on yarn that hasn't been knitted up already?
Enjoyed watching this video. Thank you.

A second speckled video (with Kool-Aid!) will be live tomorrow. :)
Food colouring dye works great, I’m surprised! Also steaming up the microwave is the perfect opportunity to clean the microwave.
I'm not sure if dyeing the yarn makes my microwave cleaner, but I can certainly wipe it down easily after!

That's lovely!
Gorgeous
Thank you!
thank you for this and all your videos. how colour fast is the food colour and koolaide
looks like confetti, party yarn.. woohoo!
Thank you, great video.
My pleasure! For other speckling techniques, check out this playlist: ua-cam.com/video/l5crHwDTaMs/v-deo.html

I've only dyed cotton yarn a couple of times with a commercial tie dye kits (videos are on the channel)

Mary Whitlow Awe thank you! I haven't written a book but maybe someday.

Oh, I see! Thank you so much, I really appreciate the response!
Do you think you could dye yarn a solid color and then go back and do this process?
Yes - but it depends on how saturated the first color is.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials Thank you!
can you use a wool wash to wash the wool once its been dyed?
I haven't tested this exactly, but I have run a swatch of superwash wool/nylon blend dyed with food coloring and laundry detergent through the washing machine and it came out with no fading.
I am going to try doing the speckled yarn .I love your videos they are so inspiring!
Question am new to dyeing yarn and could u tell me how long do u have to have to leave the yarn in the poy on the cook top ?
I let the yarn steam for about 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can wrap up the yarn in plastic wrap (or a covered microwave safe dish) and microwave in 2-3 min increments until the yarn feels super hot.

Have you tried to dye bamboo yarn
I haven't done 100% bamboo - but I've done 50% wool 50% viscose from bamboo before.
use vinagre ?
Yes. The yarn was presoaked in 16 cups water + 3 T white vinegar. No additional vinegar was added to the dye.
can you make a baby colored speckled yarn
This one turned out really pretty ❣️

Have you ever tried dying 100% cotton with this method ?
LivKrystin666 Unfortunately this won't work with cotton and other cellulose based fibers. Only wool and protein based fibers work with food coloring.
Cool video! Love your videos!
