The Ruy Lopez - Beginner Breakdown - 2014.08.12

- Mike Kummer looks at the correct way to play the Spanish, or the Ruy Lopez. You will also see common incorrect play from his students.
Games include:
C69 Ruy Lopez, exchange variation, Alapin gambit
C70 Ruy Lopez, Caro variation
C50 Giuoco Piano
Some of us are relative beginners and very much appreciate him taking the time to help us. He is wonderful.
A lot of unfair negative comments. The vid is titled "beginner breakdown." If you understand the Ruy Lopez enough to criticize the guy, probably not the video for you to watch or comment on.
Thank you! Exactly what I was thinking. Most of these people are either advanced players saying it is too easy or jerks with too much time and a bad attitude.
The spanish game is the best in my opinion this guy is i master player and to be the best you need to adaped and chang your play style to deff strstagys to maby the gambit or birlin in the midle of the game or like the spanish game a pro already knows the combination moves your going to do queen pawn then hourse then bishop but to trip him up throw out your horse mabe a mini gambit and the queen pawn then bishop so us begeners is ok with only one style were not trying to be the best but to perfect one style is good enough for me.
I'm a beginner and I'm learning a heck of a lot from him. He's also hilarious and fun to watch!
While I don't know if a 1700 player should be teaching, do consider that he is teaching complete beginners, and consider that when you criticize what he recommends.
He says 4.Bxc6 is better than 4.Ba4. We all know that this is not true, because at the GM level they play 4.Ba4 all the time-at GM level. Turns out 4.Ba4 has nauseatingly long opening theory you have to learn to play it well, something that GMs know but beginners definitely don't. When you're just learning to play the game, playing the Ruy Exchange is much better than the infinitely complex Ba4, even though in theory Ba4 is better and gives White a slightly better position, this only applies if both players are playing close to perfect play every move, and this never happens at beginner level.
Also, 5.O-O is perfectly fine in the Ruy Exchange, but again, not for beginners. The Alapin Gambit is a completely fine and defensible position for White, but it involves some counter-intuitive moves and beginners would have to learn the theory to not fall into the very mating motif presented in the video. Again, why would you rather teach beginners all those complicated variations that could arise from 5.O-O when you could simply have them play 5.h3 instead? It might lead to a slightly worse position, in theory and with perfect play, but for beginners this will be a much better move that allows them to avoid tricky lines such as the Alapin Gambit and to focus instead of learning the game.
Beginners in general should not be playing the Ruy, and would benefit more from playing something like the Giuoco Piano. They're learning basic chess principles, and it's much more productive for them to learn first and foremost not to blunder, then tactics, tactics, tactics, strategy, positional play. It's far too early for them to be going down the Ruy Lopez main line rabbit hole, they should be learning basic opening principles only and not memorizing 20+ moves of Ruy in order to play the theoretical "best" line.
That said, I agree that Mike Kummer should add some disclaimers before he makes his controversial claims, for example it would be better for him to say: "4.Ba4 is good, but 4.Bxc6 is better at your level because it's simpler, etc." I can see why people get mad at him saying that the main lines are terrible moves, it is absurd to say that, but he's working on the context of beginners so it's understandable that he wants them to avoid the complicated main lines for now and focus on the fundamentals instead.
@Thiago da Silva. You've taken the time to post a well written, balanced and helpful critique. Well done! Thank you!
This is a beginner tutorial for beginners.
I think it is a little bit unfair to be hard on what he is teaching.
He is trying to develop reasoning of younger students rather than teach outright brilliant chess theory.
Agreed. So many people on UA-cam are berks that just like to take every opportunity to insult someone or to denigrate their work.
I’m pretty sure y’all can learn something from this. If we all played like this we’d be at his level.
@@tomrose2086 all the while, they’re often dogshit at chess as well
This guy makes my brain tickle
and make me feel relax to play chess in such as way thatmy imagination is motivated to take calculated risk and
to be ware of what going on over the 64 squares.
Love his style !!!
"This guy makes my brain tickle"
Makes my brain itch.
The way he gives a presentation is a little bit hilarious, but the lecture itself is very helpful. I clicked a like button :)
I would watch every class taught by this guy! Simply stunning
This was an incredible beginner class, and I actually learned a lot! Thanks, Mike!
This guy is a great teacher. Thanks for posting this!
Wow, this guy is hilarious and explains things really well, time to watch basically all of his videos.
my thoughts exactly!
Really enjoyable video. The guy is really good at engaging newer player
This guy reminds me of Mr. Mackey from South Park :D nice videos
mmmkay
Bishop A4 is bad mmmkay
awesome tutorial Mike! thank you, it was very helpful
excellent tutorial for beginners, very helpful!!
@rosebuster I agree too... But Mike is suggesting the exchange variation because this video is for beginners and Mike might be thinking the beginners may mess up by playing other variations... Further Kasparov & Fischer were never wrong and we all know that they play 2800+ level chess not 900+ level...
The teacher starts with ruy lopez but suddenly turns his attention to pawn endings. Priceless!!
Just like these Videos. Mike's a great teacher.
but he is the video....
neiio hahaha, I think he's trying to say that he simply likes these videos like "I just like these videos". But anyway thanks for the laughs. Taking in the Ruy Lopez after a6 is a good move, but I think Ba4 shows up more often in high level play nowadays, I guess these videos are geared towards beginners, maybe Ba4 is more complicated?
Man oh man! This guy rocks!! I want to learn to play "super good".
I hate how he says that the exchange Ruy Lopez is the best and only choice, and playing Ba4 is seemingly bad... He could at least mention that it's the best on beginner level...
well on a beginner level the bishop is going to get hit again with b5, giving black some free moves. Personally I think bxc6 is better.
+TheTacticalRabbit - AW Tactics & Strategies except pretty much no one in this century plays it ;) ;) ;)
Thus the title of the video, "beginner breakdown."
I like 5:23 when he said resign is recommended a long time a ago... LOL! Worth to know, Good lecture.
For me one of the Main lines
But that´s just plain wrong - even after ...h5, white is still better if he responds with d3 instead of taking the bishop.
Brilliant teaching!
Thanks for the great video. As an 1100 player I play the Ruy Lopez allot. That being said I face it allot as well. Can you please do a video on the Morphy defense and other defensive ideas to thwart white's attack?
Nice and fun to watch!
I was Skeptical about this dude at First but.....I gave him a chance and i LOVE HIS LECTURE...Lit AsF*** ❤💕 👍🏾🔥🔥 😎😎
comedic gold.
lol
What if when ure supposed to wait black for the knight c6 and then put bishop b5 and he instead uses the other knight..
quick question from a beginner: At 9:03 he notices something regarding "well if this e pawn weren't here it would be black's move"...and he makes some further moves...what did he notice that made it not black's move at that point?
Hi, can you help please? I am trying to help my 8 year old get a little better at his openings (his request). I am curious watching these openings videos because it seems the openings all depend on the opponent doing exactly what you want; as soon as you start the Ruy Lopez and they move h4 (or some other odd non-ideal move) in response, your pre-learned pattern is stuffed... any thoughts please. Thank you. I really enjoyed the video btw, ignore the haters. 😀
I love this guy!
I could see this guy on a SNL skit!!
I know!
@@toddtaylor7228 you responded to yourself a year later...
Stephen Lee you made a new account didn’t you...
@@stephenlee306 I laughed too hard at that lmao
At 19:05 Rf5 instead of Qxf4 is wrong; isn`t it ? Cause, black has chances for mate from square h2 and c1. Am i wrong ?
Funny thing is ,i am higher rated than this guy and i still watched most of his lectures, why because he is hilarious.
Aleksa Popovic mmmmkay
You are a GM? :-D
Aleksa Popovic so what? Magnus Carlsen coach is lower rated than him and he is still magnus' coach
Aleksa Popovi
@@artificialelectronics8958 a coach is not necessarily a teacher.
This man is very suspicious.
this guy is great!
at 14:25 when i moved the rook he went k to c5 and its all fucked, am i supposed to come up with a whole different middle game till the end? someone HELP!!!
i sure love me some roy lopez
Why we cannot take pawn on e5 with knight plz responce
Wonderful
I thought 4. Ba4 was standard. Is Bxc6 actually considered correct in current theory?
I have the feeling he's teaching the exchange line of the Ruy Lopez. I think Ba4 is fine. After Ba4, black usually plays Nf6.
21:16 I like Julian's Ne4 idea: it gives Re1 a better chance if you can remove the dark square bishop
nice vid and lecture
Mike Kummer is hilarious :D
This guy is the lord god of making chess lessons fun.
isn't Ba4 the main line?
Cole Mayer, Ba4 and then Nf6 yes.
I'm conflicted... Schrantz said "don't just take stuff"... Now Kummer says "Take stuff, It's fun" xD
Schrantz Schmantz, taking stuff is fun.
Damn! I didn't know files could be adjourned!! Seriously though, this guy is cool. Good lesson.
Love your accent!!
After 4.Bxc6...dxc6 I really don't like his suggestion 5. h3. The reason is black can play 5...c5 (the e5 pawn still indirectly defended) and is absolutely fine. Objectively equal, but I'd even take black in that position. In general, when you can play c5 as black in the exchange without the e5 pawn being removed (taken or traded) you get a really solid and easy to play position. Go Bd6, Ne7 to C6, f6, Be6... etc. You have a nice bind on d4, bishop pair... life is good. Very armonious play. As white, you should put pressure on black's e pawn, forcing him to defend it in a relatively unconfortable way (and/or trade it for your d pawn sooner or later). For example, 5. 0-0 is good. Even 5. d4, 5. Nc3 and 5. d3 are better than 5. h3
Well f3 does stop checkmate but so does resigning. The lather doesn't lose more material
at 2:54, can't white just let the knight to be taken and develop their pieces intstead? Like d2d3?
Good vid Buy I was expecting yo ser the variations after b5
Does anyone know what app they use to simulate these games?
Rami Farawi It's a program called Fritz I think. There are a few good programs to use, and a few different engines. :)
Came here for chess, stayed for this meme.
TY!
we need a move that stops BOTH checkmates
Which chess app this guy is using for presentation?
Kummer is hilarious.
I love this guy. But every other theory, they decline the bishop to capture the knight. The bishop always retreats. I don’t understand.
cos bishops are more powerful than knights on an open board
8:13 if the kings can't move, e5 should be met with g5 to stop f4 duh. It should be fairly obvious, geez Mike! What kinda drill is this?
So it would go like W: e5 B: g5 W: g3 B: some random move W: f4 B: g5 captures f4 W: g3 captures f4 and we're in the same position as we would be without the g5 move
Can you not just play Knight takes e5 to stop the bishop coming to G4?
At 22:30 after Rf8 can’t you play Qe8 and it’s forced mate?
What is your soft name?
Thanx!
37:22 Queen takes h4, white queen recaptures andbblack plays kf3 forking the queen and the king?
Yeah, He's so blind
Can someone guive me the name of the teacher pllllzz
Can somebody tell me which software they are using?
Looks like one of the Chessbase applications. Probably Fritz Chess.
At 4:47 why wouldn't black's dark squared bishop just capture the pawn? it would still put the king in check.
Queen takes bishop?
mike's tha best
thanks
It sounds like Ben Finegold is heckling him.
I haven't seen this trick, but I believe it's easy. B3, he takes, then c3 or a3 and you have a passed pawn.
Around 12:55 he said you can take white-square bishop no matter what, but why couldn't white move the white-square bishop to D5, out of danger and putting pressure on the rook at A8?
Dave Gill
Black would respond with ...c6 and the white bishop has no safe squares.
Swear to God Mike Kummer is hilariously interesting to listen to. He's got this attitude, that says *smirk but you're cool with meh
At 5:44, instead of the pawn move, what about Knight takes E5? In this case, the white queen can defend G4.
+XClann, if Nxe5, either Qd4, or Qg5 wins for black
+Udbhav Raghu I see, thanks for the info!
Apparently aman says that pawn b5 is the worst move one should make
h3 instead of castles in the exchange Ruy is so completely ridiculous I can't stop laughing
Not the move itself, to be precise, but how he advertises it.
"If you all wanna play super-good..."
Like him, yes. Lol.
My thoughts exactly!
Where is this guy's accent from?!!!
This reminds me of Kevin Harts stand up making fun of his father going "ALRIT, ALRIT ALLLLLRIIIIITTTEEEE!"
e4, e5, Nf3, Nc6, Bb5, a6, Ba4, b5, Bb3, Na5, Bxf7+, Kxf7 That's the nightingale gambit against norwegian variation which is e4, e5, Nf3, Nc6, Bb5, a6, Ba4, b5, Bb3 Na5
norwegian variation? which we saw at 13:00
Indeed.
So with that we can take the pawn freely because after Kxf7 we can take the pawn on e5 and give black king a check.
That's right.
You're right That's why the chess.com engine not recommend the noewegian variation - e4/e5/Nf3/Nc6/Bb5/a6/Ba4/b5/Bb3/Na5. I see
voice reminds me of joe from family guy
Feels like Stanley from The Office is teaching me chess
I wanna play super good!!
This lecture is a kind of mix. Good stratagies but failed to bring the key points ahead. However the presenter thoroughly enjoyed the chess.
Very interesting for beginera which I'am.

I was watching this at 1.75× so I had no idea why people were saying he's drunk lol
awesome accent

Bxc6 is definitely not superior to Ba4 on move 4 after a6, both are equally good. Mike thinks that the doubled pawn are bad, but the prove beneficial to black. Just because one variation gives "bad" doubled pawns, doesn't mean that it is superior to Ba4. Also, if Bxc6 was better than Ba4, then how come the top players in the world 99% of the time play Ba4? Not saying the exchange is bad for white, it's just not better than Ba4. Just saying.
Whether the doubled pawns turn out to be good or bad in the long run depends on the relative skills of the players.
Beginner here. The comments section for this video helped me quit the exchange.
I didnt know Rick Grimes is a Chess Coach until i saw this video 🤣 thanks though!
Is this Mackey from Southpark in real life?
Mike Kummer is like the chess version of Harland Williams
7:05 pretend the kings can't move, man that would be nice
He gave up. So that was a bummer
I think i went down in rating after watching this.. :D
