For those interested in this system, look for games or books on the Rubinstein Opening, which is its correct name. It is also advisable to check resources on the better known and more popular Nimzo-Larsen Attack (in older books, Queen's Fianchetto Opening) which sometimes transposes and has similar motifs in its Classical Variation.
Are you certain? In my list the Rubinstein Attack (ECO D64) has c4 and not b3. Smirnov's line here is D05 Queen's pawn game, Rubinstein or Colle - Zukertort variation.

The Colle-Zukertort is my favorite Queen pawn game. The Bishop on b2 affects the center (unlike in the Colle) and the back rank is vacated so the Rooks are connected. I knew you played a3 at some point to keep the N from attacking the B, but the explanation of a heavy piece occupying the c-file and the subsequent pressure on the c2 pawn was very helpful
To clarify some confusion: The Colle-Zukertort and the "Colle System: Rubinstein Opening" are the same system. It seems that Colle-Zukertort used to be the more common name (at least in the early internet years), but Stockfish (and the many databases based on it) adopted Rubinstein Opening, which is why it's becoming more common today. Rubinstein was indeed the person who popularized it somewhat as a variant of his friend's opening (the Colle), although it was never really considered viable among GMs until Wesley So used it with some success (and Carlsen had some fun with it). I personally prefer the name Colle-Zukertort, because 1. Zukertort was the first on record to play it and he did play it somewhat regularly, especially during a phase around 1883 (when Rubinstein was 3 years old and Colle hadn't even been born yet). 2. The Rubinstein Opening or Rubinstein Variant is often confused with the Rubenstein Attack, which is a variant in the QGD.
Normally when I try a trap it takes numerous games before it plays out the way it's shown in the tutorial. I tried this out and the very first time, black went move for move with this video. Such a satisfying checkmate!
Igor your videos are so nice, easy to understand, perfectly explainted. But could You please named these openings in describtion? So we could save these videos and come back to them. Thank You for your job (:
Maybe consider making some chessable courses Igor. Including this opening. By the way as an idea I suggest looking at the opening that Mark Hunt uses. The famous MMA and kickboxing star is very good at chess with peak ELO of 2065 in bullet which is almost all he plays. One can see why he could be so effective in combat sports with that level of fast intellect and incredible power along with an ungodly chin. Anyway the opening is a double fianchetto. Check out some of his games. MMA is probably more up gotham's Avenue but it's impossible to contact him so if you can tap into the MMA fanbase to grow your own subscriber count why not.
Crystal clear explanations. Igor, you mentioned the early ...Bf5 move that challenges placing white's bishop on d3 but can you elaborate on how to deal with that? Thank you!
This is one of the very few good openings ive learned from this channel. Most of the traps never work but this opening seems maybe better than the stonewall attack?
this addresses the london system's weakness: .. c4 as a beginner, looking for my own style, openings that i might try, i tried to use the london.. but once black pushes to c4, you now can't put your bishop to d3. b3 addresses this, and prepares the aggressive b2 bishop.
I feel like 10.f4 is a bit weak to 10.Nb4. offering black some counter play before necessary. Is it better to wait an extra turn to play 9.Ne5 and play a3 first? Solidifying the position before going on an attack?
This is very different from the stonewall. The stonewall is characterized by playing f4 off the bat which is too committal too early on and often times unsound.
At the very end you talk about how black B to F5 or G4 could refute this opening. You give a link that shows how to handle the G4 pin, but there is still nothing about how to handle the common black B to F5 move.
Hello igor I start playing chess from 13 Jan 2024 now I am at 1100 and your video helps me a lot. now I am struggling with the black please suggest the best opening for black.
When I play e4 and black plays c5 I play whatever the gambit is called where you sacrifice a bunch of pawns to get the dark bishop on that diagonal. People forget about it ALL THE TIME! 😂
Igor, I've been looking at the colle and i am pleased to see your videos on this opening. However, can you do a video on what to do when black plays an early C5 (Benoni style) . the computer keeps playing this! Thanks again for everything you publish
There's a different video from a different channel which I like as much as igor just play e3 and if you want rest watch the 2nd part of this defense on the channel SL chess development
What about bishop G5 from black? P. S. Awesome video, I won quite a few games with this opening! Also lost quite a few when opponents start trading everything left and right and I have no pieces left for an attack.
I played this opening for the first time and my opponent blundered a piece and I checkmated him in move 15 beacause of the two powerful bishops and queen
@@robloxgameleaker got any good ones to learn? Got a lot of the basic ones down, been playing my friend who’s around 800 but he knows a defence to every opening I play lol
no, just any good opening, it can be popular or unknown. You can't keep playing the colle system for 2 months and not get bored, so the Italian, London, Caro Kann or kings Indian (the ones that I know don't suck)
Yes, its close to shuger-cake, but an e is missing at the end, apart from this, "Torte" is a special CREAME-cake, the generell word for cake in german would be "Kuchen".
great, but my opponents (computer)never play like you expect them to play..so the strategy is all over the board ..however I have the ultimate weapon tune down his ELO rating. Never fails !!
Hi Juan, blacks 3...Bf5 is called anti-colle, and really, really annoying. Stronger players always seems to play this move. I suggest 4.c4 immediately then they go e6 then you play 5.Qb3 attacking the weak pawn. Since their bishop no longer can defend their weak pawn, they will play b6 mostly.. Then you go 6.Nc3 and from here black has a plenty of options. He can play 12(!) different moves, one is a blunder. Some are mistakes and others are good... Moves are: Be7, c6, Bd6, Nc6, Nbd7, c5, dxe4, a5, h6, Ne4, a6, Na6 where last move is a blunder. So there are so many lines in this anti-colle variation takes some time to learn 😅. Good luck!

I used to play these lines many years ago. It's all coming back to me. I often would play it online or at the park against the chess hustlers.

What shall we do if Black Moves NB4 instead of Nd7?
Putting pressure C2 pawn
Happens only 1% of the games, so very rare move... More to worry about is anti-colle.
Utterly destroying oppenants in rapid. Wow I like it! Very easy to learn. Thank you so much Igor Grand Master
Awesome! Cool to hear.
Thank you GM Igor! I have been playing the London System lately and this is a really great variation to add to my toolbox!
Enjoy!
Im dabbling with this open. So far its working out for me
What about anti colle system with 1. d4 d5 2. Kf3 Kf6 3. D3 Bf5 ? What is the best answer ? I assume c4 ?
You probably mean 3. e3 Bf5. Stockfish gives 4. c4 c6 5. Nc3 e6, a kind of mix between Semislav and Baltic defenses.
Great lesson as always!!
this addresses the london system's weakness: .. c4

Thanks for the video, Bucko
If they play B f 5 on move 2, is it better to exchange Bishops, or is their a better option? Thanks
What if they go d5-> c5 right out the gate? How do you respond? Do I still push b3 even though I haven’t moved my kings pawn?
GM Igor, can play couple simulations with your subs after tutorial such this ?
Please...
I've been having a lot of fun with the stonewall lately, and I like how this transposes into that, but with a dangerous fianchetto'd bishop.
This is very different from the stonewall. The stonewall is characterized by playing f4 off the bat which is too committal too early on and often times unsound.
To be one of those people: Do you have a reccomendation against the 3.Bf5 "elephant in the room" ? it's quite popular aswell.
At the very end you talk about how black B to F5 or G4 could refute this opening. You give a link that shows how to handle the G4 pin, but there is still nothing about how to handle the common black B to F5 move.
What would we do if he castle on queen because this is similar to stonewall i guess
Hi, againt King's indian defense and Bf7 working?
After Knxd7, d4xc5 black can take the pawn by his bishop to open his queen on the 7th rank and support his king
I wonder what white should do if black castles long?
B-f4 would interfere with the Colle more than B-g5 . It takes away White's b1 to h7 attacking diagonal
This is extremely helpful. Thanks for sharing 🎉
🎉
Thank you ones again and again, fantastic work 👏 and thank you
What if black plays (at 6.20) Bxc5 instead of bxc5?
I would recommend playing this opening till ur 2000fide, well u can stop at anytime but I recommend playing e4 2000+ level 😅
Nah it’s playable up until GM level
