Lion El'Jonson is in a sort of stasis hidden within a secret chamber within the "Rock," the base of the Dark Angels chapter. It's a secret known only to the Emperor, and the "Watchers in the Dark", a sort of Jawa like race that works for the Dark Angels. I feel like people overestimate how much role machine spirits play in things in-universe. since machine spirits are likely just software or limited AI running on complex machines, most things have no actual machine spirits present in them to speak of. it's just that technological knowledge is reduced to dogma in the Imperium, most people are looking at tech through the lenses of superstition.
your plasmagun won't blow up in your hands because you're dealing with an angry machine spirit, but because you were probably lax in its maintenance. but since understanding the inner workings of high tech equipment is beyond most people, the best way to make sure they take care of their gear is to make them believe the spirit in the machine will be angry if they don't do it.
tho in cases of smart weapons that have optics or sensors that pair with a helmet HUD, you could say they have a machine spirit, it won't "care" about stuff, like whispering the litany of targeting to it, or not having incense burned over it. it's juts a machine that does something that a person with medieval-level understanding of technology can't explain, like seeing the targets through smoke. so it must have some esoteric explanation, like the spirit of the machine sees things your human eyes cannot.

Neither Time nor Space have much meaning in the Warp. That's why it is used as FTL travel method.
You send out 100 ships to a world in need that has sent a distress call (like probably 3 months or longer ago) and of those maybe 40-50 arrive at the exact spot they wanted and in time.
A few take double or tripple the time to get there, a few end up a few lightyears off-course AND possibly late, ten or so ships might not exit the warp Ever Again and one ship might have arrived BEFORE the fleet set out in the first place. Which would be nice if the ship wouldn't run into over-whelming opposition alone.
That's the Warp. This is why the Imperial Navy generally sends more ships out than they actually think they need in the battle.
The Warp is basically the universe making a collossal rounding error on fleet movements, so they account for that.

The reason why the jamming was included in this game is because the board game it was based on had jamming as a balancing mechanism. In the lore, the equipment of the Space Marines are _very_ well maintained and are treated as holy relics by the serfs that maintain them. Yes, most of them are very old, but the designs are made to last.

"Does warp follow laws of time?"
Lol no. When a ship travels through warp, literally noone knows for sure how long it will take in the outside world. A ship can enter the warp, travel from point A to point B, 5 days worth of time will pass inside the warp, but outside the warp 5 months pass. Or the same distance could take 3 weeks in warp time and 3 years in real time. And sometimes the warp does a funny, and yeets a ship 10k years into the past or future. For example, there was once an ork warboss that got flinged into the past, met himself, saw his favorite gun on his past self and tried killing himself to have two of his favorite gun.
Warp travel is considered the shittiest, most unreliable form of FTL in fiction for a reason.

Can confirm. A ship entering the warp can go forward in time, back in time, or instantly travel to anywhere, none of which is really up to the navigator, who is praying for the best and pointing the ship in vaguely the right direction. Chaos Space Marines leaving the Eye of Terror in the late 41st millenium, from their perspective, could have just finished raiding Terra with Horus and have no idea Tyranids have even entered the galaxy. Time has no meaning in the Warp, and the chaos gods take no small measure of amusement keeping it that way.

In very rare circumstances you might even emerge at your destination prior to embarking from your origin.

The gun jamming mechanics is in the game because the board game has a gun jamming mechanic.
Johnson fought the Dark Angel traitors on their homeplanet Caliban during the Heresy and was slain by their leader and his mentor, Luther. Luther immediatly had regrets and went insane and was captured.
Johnson was taken by the "Watchers", an alien race walking among the Dark Angels, healed and put into a coma. Luthers was imprisoned, Caliban destroyed up to asteroid size.
Caliban got some rocket engines installed and they fly it around. Johnson is somewhere on it in a secret chamber and Luther's cell is also in a pretty secret jail. Only the Supreme Grand Master knows the location and visits Luther sometimes to get some insight from his howling mad visions.
I think in the recent codex he escaped or got freed. They seemed to put up the Fallen ones as a faction. At the moment they are just treated like Chaos Space Marines.

in the lore and sort shown in the game that bolters are normally very reliable but stormbolters are said to jam because of their box magazine (which was once used on normal bolters at on point but were discontinued for this very reason) - most likely because its trying to feed both chambers at the same time instead of alternating, because for some reason they needed to be firing two bolts simultaneously with each pull of the trigger.
Jamming was a important element in the original Spacehulk board game were it was even more common then games as you rolled 2 dice to shoot but if you roll ANY doubles that marines gun jams and must spend 1 of his limited pool of action points to clear it. the other "jams" in Deathwing are failsafes like the Plasma Cannon overheating and refusing to fire till it has vented the buildup heat instead of just exploding and killing everything , user included as that type of weapon is known to do far too often

As with anything involving the warp, the answer is usually "yes and no". There are several canon cases of time travel through the warp (both forward and backward), and it is very hard to predict how long any individual jump will take in the "outside" time, which is why ships commonly run on their own shipboard timetable. Generally speaking, all physical laws are subjective in the warp and are up to the whims of whoever has the most power in any given "region" of it (space also frequently being non-continuous, so it is impossible to draw any boundaries or borders in there).

So when you are there, time exists but is rather unstable. You might enter the warp and arrive to your destination 1000 years in the future or in the past. Translating this to 40k, they are generally using somewhat advanced weapons, that they might have "lost" the knowledge about... and there might be a machine spirit (Or any jam might be blamed on it at least).
I would have to recheck, but I think they show some of the rituals being performed to please the machine spirit of their weapons, in the first Astartes video.
(I don't believe streaming day/days, are as important as time slot. Hitting the USA/Europe "window" for instance.)
The Warp kinda exist outside of time. Theoretically, two armadas being sent to the same destination traveling at the same time, might enter the warp at the same time, and one might arrive decades later, where the other arrives months before it entered the warp... Because of how seriously the Commissars might be about following orders to the letter, the later armada might have to attack the same area that has already been conquered by the first one.

The mechanicum, basically a faction of the imperium that focuses on robots, hunts down Standard Template Constructs (STCs) which were created during the Age of Technology, the time period before the Age of Strife. Time in the warp can go any way it wants. Generally during the warp travels the time flows just like in the material universe. But it can be whatever: the ship can exit the warm 10000 years later than it has entered, or 10000 years before it entered. No guarantee. You can exit at your destination, you can exit near some star and the gravity will just crash the ship into it.
That's why the Emperor wanted to get the access to the Webway, to have the safe travel routes through the universe.

The warp is like a vast ocean with fickle currents. These currents effect both space and time. Going into the warp relies on gellar fields, which are basically shields that keep the warp out and turn you into a boat sailing those currents. Ships have gone into the warp and come out almost exactly where they want to be while others have gone in and cone out missing their target by a significant margin. The same is true for time. Ships sometimes go into the warp and come out a couple weeks later as expected while some go in and disappear for massive periods of time, to the point where they exit the warp a thousand years later despite the crew only experience a week's worth of time onboard. In extremely rare cases a ship can exit the warp before it even enters it. Once an ork warboss exited the warp before he left on his waaagh. He killed his past self in order to get a second of his favorite gun. Why didn't this cause a time paradox? Because the warp doesn't play by your rules that's why!

Time in the warp is basically non-existent, but when ships travel through the warp, they are wrapped in a so-called Gellar-field, the function of which is to drag a bubble of reality with the ship when it translates from real-space to the warp. If the Gellar-field goes down, that's when Event Horizon type shit happens, and daemons can freely manifest on the ship.
Warp storms are still a problem, which are basically huge turbulances in the warp that can cause ships to break apart, or get blown off-course - and by off-course I mean they could end up in a different place than intended, or in the right place, but at a different time, which could mean hundreds of years later, or in very rare cases, earlier than when they departed.
Stuff that's not often talked about in the books that warp travel is mostly done along stable warp routes. The more turbulent the path, the more likely the ship will get lost in the warp, or that they get significantly delayed. I figure this is dependent on how skilled the navigator is. And sometimes previously stable warp routes are made unnavigable due to newly formed warp storms, which could cut off a star system from the rest of the Imperium for hundreds of years.
There's also the matter of warp "tears" for a lack of a better word, which are areas of space where the veil between reality and the warp is thin, and the warp bleeds into real space. The largest known phenomenon of this is the Eye of Terror, which engulfs multiple star systems. In places like this time is malleable. It is sometimes implied that since time doesn't flow like normal in the Eye of Terror, that from the perspective of the traitor legions that fled there, only a couple hundred years passed since the Siege of Terra and the defeat of Horus, while from the perspective of the galaxy 10 thousand years passed.
In one of the old chaos codexes there was a particular story about one champion of chaos slaying another one, only to later encounter the same rival again, who having no recollection of the events, then managed to escape into the warp, never to be seen again. This is of course hints that the guy escaped into the warp, then ended up accidentally going back in time, where he met his fate at the hand of that rival champion.

The jamming thing is a holdover from the old Space Hulk tabletop game. It doesn't exist in 40k tabletop or really even lore for that matter. Having read >100 40k books I don't recall ever hearing of a bolter weapon jamming unless it was damaged.
Edit: The Lion was probably blasted with warp energy and knocked unconscious when the Dark Angels home world Caliban was destroyed near the end of the Horus Heresy. He is currently inside a fortress monastery built out of the rubble of that planet. He was sort of the Emperor's secret weapon in a sense, he was arguably his best general and was given access to weapons and technology that no other Primarch, including Horus, was allowed to use. His purpose was basically to be a "cleaner," i.e. to destroy an enemy so completely that there would not even be a record of them having existed.

The Warp (or the immaterium, or realm of souls) is a dimension of non-linear causality. Time as a linear concept does not exist, inverse-causality can exist here. It “generally” flows forward, like you can’t use it to time travel backwards without great effort, but time dilation occurs on all scales. Some Horus Heresy traitors have experienced every day since 30k, some popped out of the warp in 40k thinking that 30k was yesterday.

To be fair, i think that their weapons jamming is kinda understandable considering they are useing rapid fire weapons that shoots what is essentially 30mm hyper velocity armor piercing rocket propelled delayed fuse impact fragmentation grenades, or use plasma weapons which if used over enthusiastically and allowed to dangerously overheat can catastrophically malfunction. And the fact that majority of the terminators weapons are anywhere between several decades to several millennia old.

Generally anything from the Old Eras of the Imperium will potentially be named. Since production of Force and Power Weapons is actually extremely rare/impossible, most Space Marine gear that isn't basic stuff is generally handed down from prior generations and may have developed a history and legacy all it's own.
Even some bolter pistols are extremely advanced models used by Pre-Heresy Legion Captains or even the Primarchs themselves, that are treated as almost Holy relics by their successor chapters, and typically only dusted off and brought into the field for matters of extreme importance and wielded by their most elite of soldiers.

Lion El'Jonson was almost killed by his second in command, Luther, during the Heresy. He survived and wias spirited away to a cellar below his Legions' Fortress monastery, but in the ensuing battle of Traitors and Loyalists their entire planet was torn into tiny fragments scattered in space. A shard with the Monastery survived and was rebuild in the capital ship of their fleet. The Rock. Where he lies in stasis, and have been so, fully healed, for last 10000 standard years, while all the successor Chapters of his Legion frantically scour the entire Galaxy for any traitors, now known as the Fallen Angles (as most the Chapters are named Angles something, so the Heretics...), as well as for him... While he Zzzzzs down there... Seriously, read it on the warhammer40k.fandom, the story is massive.

And to answer your question about time in the Warp, no time within the material realm does not apply within the Warp as a ship can get lost in the Warp for at least a few centuries only for a few months to pass in our realm. Or by the same token, centuries passing in OUR realm but only a few weeks going by in the Warp. It's just batshit crazy

When it comes to the warp, let me put it this way. Ever thought, emotion, metaphor, parable, etc. consciously and subconsciously exists in the warp. Time is so fucking wonky there and ships can get lost for what feels like a thousand years but is more like a week, or vice versa.

Luetin did a video series on the time in the Warp. It is 3 videos circa 90 minutes each... Long story short: it is complicated. Some of the Fallen who were sucked into Warp while his planet exploded in a Warp Storm around Lion El'Jonson emerged in realspace minutes later. Some have not emarged 10000 years later. They percieved time of travel may likely be the same. When Lions Sable Chapter went into the Eye of Terror pursuing Heretics and they were caught in a Warpstorm survivors thought they were off for 5 years. They returned to nearby planet and a very different Imperium over a millennium later...

Yeah Lionel Johnson was brutally wounded after Luther, his dearest friend and adopted took half of the Legion and rebelled against him. It was only after Luther was released from his control by Chaos, realized what he did and he was found by the other Dark Angels he'd kept repeating that the Lion had been whisked away by the Watchers in the Dark. Since then he's been sleeping deep within the Rock, not even the modern Dark Angels chapter know that he's there but every Codex entry that has mentioned him has confirmed that he's long since recovered from the wounds he suffered and that he can wake up at any time. But he hasn't.

Lion El’jonson had a mini-Horus Heresy after the actual one. His second in command, Luther, was hitting the Warp-juice back on Caliban, so when Lion returned he had single combat with Luther, that technically ended in a draw. Lion was wounded and put in a warp-induced coma, Luther was hurt and Chaos retreated from him leaving him in a state of insanity (“what have I done?!?” Kind of mental break). Only the emperor and the “watchers in the dark” (think Star Wars jawas native to Caliban) know that The Lion is in a secret chamber in The Rock (massive chunk of Caliban-turned-starship that survived destruction).
And only the supreme chapter master of the dark angels know that Luther is imprisoned in The Rock.
All of Luther’s followers were sucked into the warp when Luther lost, and are called “the fallen”, the “inner circle” of ever dark angel successor chapter hunts them, relentlessly, and every dark angel chapter collectively calls themselves “the unforgiven” because fallen still live.

The warp is technically acausal, sometimes ships will arrive at their destination on time, years later, or sometimes even before they left.
However, it should be noted that the acausality of the warp is somewhat complex, because there is a definitive order of events relating to the warp within realspace, (the war in heaven, the Fall of the Eldar and birth of Slaanesh) which kind of necessitate a form of causality, otherwise the ancient pre-fall Eldar would've known about Slaanesh before they inadvertantly created it.
Luetin09 has a pretty good multi-hour long series that deals with the Warp and Chaos, and its acausal nature.

For the lion the dark angels co existed with another species they called the watchers in the dark and lion made a promise with them to keep chaos off of their homeworld of caliban or somesuch thing. Lion then peaced out to join the emperor during his crusade and one thing led to another and eventually caliban got nuked off the face of the galaxy and the only thing left was a single mountain that the dark angels turned into a space fortress and their home base known as the Rock.
When lion returned to the rock after the heresy the watchers roofied him and shoved him into a closet somewhere in the fortress where he’s been to this day with no one able to find him cause of filthy xenos magic.

I think the "Weapons jamming in the year 40.000" is explained away with the fact that machine spirits are actually a thing. Like, the reason your super advanced weapon can jam might be, because you pissed of your gun and it refuses to work.
Appearently the belief in machine spirits by the Mechanicus made them real through the existence of the Warp and able to affect the machines they're attached to. Though, some "machine spirits" seem to be actually the remnants of humans who's brains were used to automate certain wepons like tanks or space ships, so it's not all warp-shenanigans.
Obviously, the actual reason why weapons can jam is - it's a gameplay-mechanic from the board game this game is based on, so they needed a reason, why weapons can jam.

ok, how do time work inside the warp... in short: it does not, what you would call, "function".
if you go through the warp (presumably to travel long distance):
    - you can have the same time elapsed in and out of the warp.
    - you could land in the far future, couple year or several thousand.
    - you could go back in time
    - you could come out of the warp at the exact same point where you entered in real space, but the ship and its inhabitant would be a thousand year older.
    two side story here:
    - a traitor astarte ask another how much time have pass for him since the heresy (10,000 years ago). his anwser: about 300 years from his perspective. less than some (50,000+), but more than most.
    - once upon a time, an ork had a gun that he loved really, really, really much. One day for some dumb reasons (cuz ork), he happenned to travel back into time and met a younger version of himself with his favourite gun. in typical ork fashion, that guy killed his youger self and grabbed his gun... wich he now had two of those... AND THERE WAS NO NEGATIVE REPERCUSSION FROM THAT! Him killing himself in the past did not violate the natural law of our universe enough that said universe thought that it should make some correction there in order to keep making sense... think about that when you wonder how time work in 40k!!!

In fact, this is a recuring theme in 40k ork: they have passive reality bending power that grow with their numbers, but they are far too stupid to realise it and use it to their advantage.
also, if other race psyker can act as scalpel or sledge hammer, the ork one act more like grenade... that YOU dont decide qhen the pin is pulled.

Normally the warp seems to follow close enough to time outside of the warp. However you could spend the day in the warp and end up a thousand years in the future, you could spend a hundred years in the warp and arrive a hundred years in the past. It's even possible you could go into the warp to stop a chaotic incursion on a distant planet wind-up lost in the warp become corrupted by chaos and come out of the warp in the past as the very same chaotic incursion you were sent to stop in the first place.

The phrase "In the Warp, everything is by the whims of the Dark Gods" is quite literal. A whole planet (Daemon world) could pop into existence in the Warp at random, anything could happens.

  • @MakooWallinen

Time is not constant or working the same as the normal world, that is kind of why it works so well for space travel.
The immaterium does not care about things like time or distance, age etc.
The warp can make a journey that would take 100 years take 3 months, 2 days, 50 years, 70 years, 10 years or a millennium.
A Space Marine chapter went into the warp and was expected to arrive a few months later and then one day at the destination an unknown ship carried like a few hundred years later and they had been fighting demons the entire time.
The Tau can not use the warp and therefore all their travel is much, much, MUCH slower, but then again since it does not depend on the warp and its randomness they can actually use math to know precisely when a ship is meant to arrive. But they actually can use AI unlike all other races...
(AI basically always make the conclusion that since Chaos gods exist and machines have a much lower chance to be corrupted by chaos, the most logical conclusion is to remove all life with feelings and the capacity to worship Gods, why the Taus minor AI has not is... strange and probably with a twist)
Is it logical for a weapon to jam when you fire a repeating grenade launcher almost point-blank into giant aliens in masses?
