To me, this is the best release from Mayhem and one of the best black metal releases in general. Hypnotic, atmospheric yet very technical at the same time. Excellent riffs, great drumming and out of this world vocals with cryptic lyrics. The sudden tempo and beat changes makes it sound furious and violent. This amazed me in late 90's, and still does.
i totally agree with you on the best release from mayhem. it´s almost a "scary" album, very dark, throat slit guttural voice from maniac. the total ambiance is very macabre and satanic.

Complete masterpiece from beginning to end. This avant-garde and progressive era of Mayhem was absolutely the best for me. I believe that they wrote their very best music with Maniac and Blasphemer, and evolved the genre like no one else did.

The album title is just so brilliant. "Wolf's lair" = one of Hitler's fortresses "Abyss" = entrance to Hell So it's like a portal to Hell was open in Hitler's fortress, inspiring all the darkness and evil of WW2

When I found this on cd years ago, it was a very rare item. This has some of mayhem's best songs on it, and maniac sounds amazing. Ancient skin 13:49 is the best song on the album. 1349 is also the year when the black death spread through Europe, coincidence?.

Still going strong after all there years, able to evolve like few...

It was great the way that the way Mayhem composed the music was very similar to De Mysterious Dom Sathanas, even years after the death of Oystein. But the 'feel' to this album is different.
MahooMushi Okay Chimera is good indeed, I have in fact the edition where unfolded is a cross, but, IMO, this one is better :) more rawness, epic intro, epic song at the end, just perfect. Chimera has songs quite weak and lazy.

This is a reflection of the band's personalities (in that time span). Do you want albums like this to come out again? Then you need to really piss them off. All the albums are different and I persronally think their best recording is the one with Pelle, "Live in Leipzig". If you analyze it, the guitar has been more on point in previous albums (Oystein was really good) and Hellhammer has also improved a lot taking in consideration all the styles he plays. Only thing I dont enjoy of Mayhem is the vocalists they've gone through, I cant stand the pussy ass gollum voice of Maniac or Attila, Dead was king, specially live. And hey, no offence intended bro, we are all kvlt ;)

This is the best release of the second Maniac era. The vocals aren't that bad really, I think they were too loud in the mix which makes them sound a bit goofy

Absolutely, perfect mix of old atmospheric evilness and technical's playing, Blasphemer's riffs and HH's drumming were an unbeatable match.

It took me some getting used to when I first heard it; I was used to Attila's vocals, but it grew on me quickly. Very eerie and unrelenting.
i could not have said it better. totally agreed.
