Wild Camping In POLAR CONDITIONS - Pitching my Hilleberg tent in strong wind- LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

  • Join me for 28 minutes on a wild camp in polar conditions in Norway. It`s my first wild camp this winter and the weather forecast said -16 and feels like -24 degrees due to humid and strong winds. I probably did some basic and quite funny errors when pitching the Hilleberg Unna tent against the wind direction. But I`m a newbie and I show it in the video :) The Landscape Photography really came second to the hike itself and staying warm and safe. The video also show how much the weather and conditions can chanage in the mountains

    Good to know that the tent can withstand such conditions. I use it in completely harmless conditions on kayak tours because it is freestanding.

    Great video, Stig! Could really feel the winter conditions. Pitching a tent alone in windy conditions is no joke. But good to learn from practice as long as the safety is on your side;) Cool to see some really beautiful photography in there as well!

    Seeing you kitsurfing with the tent made me smile :) I don't want to be rude, but you've made a newb mistake here. It was the good thing to peg the two corners of the tent being upwind. But the next thing to do is to put your gear inside to avoid the whole thing to become a sail. This is critical since you can destroy the tent if it starts flying like it did in your video.
    It's also a good idea to dig a hole to set your tent inside it. But don't just shovel the snow away. Cut blocks of snow instead that you'll then use to make a wall all around the the tent. This way, you don't have to dig too much and saving tons of efforts for a maximum wind protection. Also, always keep the shovel inside the tent. Last, always keep a knife at hand when going to sleep because if the tent collapses on you, it'll be like a vacuum in the middle of the night. And it'll be the exact same as being buried under an avalanche with the lack of oxygen killing you. If that happens, the knife will allow you to cut your way through out of the tent.
    Your life depends on doing the right moves...

      Thank you very much for watching and the great advice. Im fully aware of errors in the video. Next time I will put the gear inside and also bring a knive as that seem to be very important. I didnt do that in the next video thought as it was absolutely no wind. Cheers 👍🙂

    Excellent Video. What I do different. Don't put snow on the fragile Unna, rather build a snow wall in front of it to protect from wind. Snow load did deform the tent quite alot, tent poles where screaming for help. Bring double poles for the Unna, Unna is "just" red label. Wheather is always unpredictable. All guy lines should be equally tight. Also I would trade places, use the skiis for the front long guy lines into the wind, use snow pegs for the tent itself. Why? You should not nail the tent, but stabilize the tent poles to a maximum first. The worst thing you can fear is a broken tent pole, because you preferred the use your best pegs, the skiis, for the ground sheet. Again, the tent looked quite deformed. Otherwise and excellent capture of nature, well done.

    • @stigfloberghagenphotography
      @stigfloberghagenphotography  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the comments. Im relly a newbie on tents. I was a bit unsure about throwing snow on it but the gaps were quite big because of the uneven hard and packed snow. It was to little snow to make a wall there. The wind came from north where the skis were but you mean they should be used on the long sides ? I need to practise on those guidelines. I agree that it looked a bit deformed.
      Anyway really happy that someone watch and do helpful advice 👌❄️

    • @-ZELTHELD-
      @-ZELTHELD- 4 місяці тому +1

      @stigfloberghagenphotography its okay to use some snow to fill the air gaps, but you shoveled quite some big chunks on the tent :-). Use the ski for the two long GUY lines of the tent poles, that way the poles should remain maximum stable. There is a ton of snow pitching with ski, everybody does it a bit different. Have fun.
