  • This is a video about winter camping in Norway, Hardangervidda.
    I made this video based on feedback from "Hilleberg Saitaris in Strong Winds + Epic Scenery".
    This video contains more shots from the hike plus no music, only ambient sounds recorded on sight.
    Hope you enjoy this video :)

      Hi Alan 😃 It’s something that I really recommend. It doesn’t have to be extreme and you don’t have to walk for many hours to experience scenery like this. There’s a road crossing the Hardanger plateau (from east to west) so you can camp like this just outside of your car 👌

      Vega wasn’t so happy about the cold. We had to stop a few times to put her in the isolation bag during the hike - she’s definitely not a polar dog 😄 The Hilleberg tent performed great. I prefer to have a safe and sold tent on winter expeditions even though it’s a bit expensive.

      Thanks 🙏 It was a great experience.
      My dog didn’t enjoy the weather the first two day. That’s why we chose to stay at the same place two days in a row.
      Interesting question about the term blizzard. I became curious and had to look deeper into what defines a blizzard “Sustained wind or frequent gusts to 35 miles an hour or greater; and. Considerable falling and/or blowing snow”. According to the weather forecast, the winds were peaking at 62 miles an hour (28 m/s) and all of the roads were closed because of blowing snow. It fits the definition quite well then (for the first two days) - luckily for me ☺️ But yeah, it’s easy to exaggerate the title on YT. The next video is only 12 hours away 😃 Thanks for the comment 🙏

      I totally agree when it comes to filming in bad weather and/or extreme cold. It’s so much harder than a mild and calm summer month. But hey, people like to see other people

      @@HikingHansen what month was this? Were you happy using cords on the pulk? I'm getting different opinions on Hardangervidda being hilly or flat = pulk poles vs cords. What say you?

    • @HikingHansen
      @HikingHansen  Рік тому +1

      @@OutdoorPrep This video was recorded in April (easter week). Good question. I usually bring both, but on this trip I didn't. If you are skiing with a dog, I would use the poles every time - mainly because of safety. Cords + dog can be a disaster since you don't have the same control with cords. That being said, I love using cords when it's flat. The middle of Hardangervidda is flat, but there are parts where it's not - especially around Haukeli in the south and Finse in the north. To summarize; if I had to choose, I would go fixed poles, not these DIY poles, but a wire with glass-fiber - for example Acapulka. In addition, a rope doesn't weigh anything, so why not bring both?

    • @OutdoorPrep
      @OutdoorPrep Рік тому

      @@HikingHansen Thanks for your insight! I'm trying to go ultralight next year and also save weight with the poles. Main reason for considering rope is last year wind was blowing over my pulk and I could not control it and as it was cartwheeling it was tipping me over too. With ropes I think I can just hold it closer.

    • @HikingHansen
      @HikingHansen  Рік тому +1

      @@OutdoorPrep For ultralight hiking with a pulk, have you considered the LW Racing Pulk 4' from Northern Sled Works? I'm thinking of buying that for lightweight winter trips ;) I have also experienced the same as you with rope. My buddy who had the Acapulca fixed system stayed on track whiteout any problem. I guess you just have to try yourself ;)

    Nice pulls. Likely an OPTIMUS white gas stove and not an MSR Whisperlite Universal. Nice stove "tray" for safety.
    Ear plugs would be required for sleep in these winds. BTW, ALWAYS keep an navy shovel by your tent door or inside the vestibule.
    A million guy lines ae never enough. :o) (Would a portable wind generator be food in this situation? jus' sayin'...
