Wow! As a kid I had this one in green. Too bad none of mine are still around. Had all of the sweet 16 and would get a couple every now and then as they came out in the late '60s and early '70s.

A long time ago, I used to paint bodies for slot cars. A trick that I used back then will undoubtedly come in handy for you. Mix Elmer's white glue with water until it's quite thin and then 'paint' it on with a tiny brush where you don't want the next layer of paint to stick. It comes off with more water when dry. You can get VERY intricate using this method. I even used to paint flames on the slot cars.

These restoration videos are amazing. You are truley my favorite youtubers and a few days ago i got the deal of a life time. I got a green one of these in almost perfect condition. Only thing wrong was the wheels were bent. But since ive started watching your vids ive been making custom hot wheels like crazy and your videos have helped me alot on how to restore and make custom hot wheels. Thank you

All your work is terrific and well done. I have bought some restored cars that used a painted undercoat like this and they can be appealing and pretty at first, but i find that over time I become unsatisfied with them because it just doesn't look like metal. Now I feel that I would rather see a car with some nicks and gouges in it than to see a painted base finish. To me it doesn't look like a spectraflame paint job any more, it just looks like it was sprayed with a metalflake paint. I like to be able to see the metal under the clear paint. I prefer your work with zinc and want to learn how to do that.

I saw vw bug with a Chevy 350 under the front trunk lid once. It was a 350 with a blower mounted to it. I never came across a VW with a Hemi bolted upfront though. Hot wheels had some killer combos back when I was a kid.

You could smooth all of those pits with primer filler, something usually found in auto paint supply stores and you can get in aerosol cans and finish it with sealer for those lighter pigment colored cars to get an even color. The primer filler would need sanded to smooth out but the sealer you do not sand, you would paint the color after the designated drying time. I have never restored hot wheel cars but have done a lot of die cast growing up and I am a paint and body guy by trade on real cars now and would imagine the little hotwheel cars would smooth out just as well.

i think you may have sanded most of the detail off. I would do the detail work on this one cause it would make it stand out more as the sanding took it away. Looks way too smooth now. A lot of the body details are gone.

I have watched a few videos. When the metal can't be sanded, you should consider fiberglass, it will save the car if it's in a terrible state, the paint will also be a lot smoother.
