Super Slow-Moto: The "Bubba Scrub" w/ James Stewart
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лип 2015
- Watch an ultra slow-mo explanation of the scrub by the man who brought it to moto: James Stewart.
No riding technique has revolutionized modern motocross like the Bubba Scrub. When James Stewart hopped on the pro scene in 2002 at a ripe 16, he brought with him enough youthful exuberance to shame a Justin Bieber concert. What’s more, it showed in his riding. Stewart was always an animated rider, moving all over the bike when he was on the track.
During his early years as a pro, he developed a technique of throwing the bike sideways on the face of jumps, which allowed him to hit the jumps with more speed while at the same time staying lower than other riders. This ultimately allowed him to put power to the ground more quickly. What became known as the Bubba Scrub not only helped lap times, it also looked awesome.

I bubba scrubbed in 1975 on my RM 125. . . it was no big deal. But I did go to the hospital.
Same, bubba scrubbed the rail roads stones a few times and Had a friend bubba scrub the back of my snowmobile flipping both of us. 🤕
Hahaha your hilarious dude
Danny Magoo Chandler invented the "bubba scrub" bubba Stewart a bald headed liar 😭
Heh, heh, I was winking to myself, thinking of how I would carry this off back in my MX days in the early '70s - at the bikes most horizontal, I would have likely been turning loose of the grips, throwing my arms outward and upward, preparing for a full body slam landing in the boonies...! Tongue in cheek of course but things like this we only started seeing in the experts when they came over from Europe.
@@whalesong999 Europe? The Americans are the best MX riders
You have to ride dirt bikes to fully appreciate how difficult something like this is. Incredible riders like Stewart make it look almost effortless.
I can't even tail whip
+MCnugget MCnugget it must be hard
Being that fucking stupid
well said. i've tried explaining this to people my whole life.
Agreed. Been riding track bush and a lil fmx for 25 years and it's still the best thing to watch on a bike. The way he gets it flat 3 cm off the ground is fucking nuts.
You are absolutely correct, most of the people commenting don't have a clue how serious of a move that is or just hitting a legitimate double alone for that matter. I rode for 5 or six years before I gathered up the balls to hit a real double. It's amazing how safe a tabe top made me feel
No one that hasn't ridden a motocross bike to a certain level can truly appreciate what James is doing here. The man is an artist.
I ride a mountain bike and I can apreciate it
I remember walking the track at the Nationals after he practiced. There was a crowd at the top of a jump staring down. There was a 4 inch scrape at the apex from his foot peg. Some said it was his hand grip. Legendary.
By the way you tried it.
There's not a damn person in this world who can say this isn't impressive
haters will
+kyle young This isn't impressive
hugh janus except me cause they never showed him land
yeah cause he didn't.. he's still out there floating around...
This is not impressive
The fact this kid outa nowhere originated something that every single rider emulates has always been amazing to me. McGrath started soaking up jumps to stay lower and James took it to another level...
He didn't "originate" it! He updated it, yes!
I'm still bummed the way he left. I'm glad though we did have him for a while. Most talented SX rider so far.
I think he is my favorite rider of all time. I’ve been riding dirt bikes for 50 years. I had videos of James when he was a little kid that my kids grew up with. I think no one has the natural talent that James has. Watching this video of him pitching the bike so low up over the top of the ridge is astounding. Keep it up James. You’re the best.
How can I see these videos? He's my favorite of all time as well. I'd love to see his mini days.
I remember getting cross rutted right at the face of an 80ft table top. I ended up accidentally throwing the best scrub of my life
lol facts..
Watch the Whisky Throttle Show with Ricky Carmichael, he talks about when he accidentally threw it too hard and ended up backwards next to Jeremy McGrath and it's really funny to hear him describe it.
@@8180634 Dude Thanks Matt , just watched almost that whole show . Wow huh , Great to know the truth about that picture " out of control " !
The way he talks about doing makes it feel like the bike is alive and you have to trust it to do its own thing it's incredible
Man I remember the wars between RC (Suzuki), Reeves (Yamaha), and Bubba (Kawasaki). That was the best motocross has ever been. Or holds up at least with McGrath, Windham and some other boys my mind is blanking on. I still remember how DOMINANT RC was. Bubba was always faster but he would push to hard and was injured too much. Man the sport is gone now. Now it’s all about flips n tricks but this guy is on the Mt Rushmore for sure. I still have the hat you signed for me back at Prairie City! U are a stud and one of my all time favorites. Thanks for the memories Bubba!
I remember one year RC was so far ahead of everyone else in every race, they didn't even show him on the camera feed anymore... after the hole shot, he was gone...
Why tf was he at prairie city?!
Amazing! That man completely shook the motocross/supercross world to its foundation!
I wonder how many champions lost many nights sleep because of Bubba Stewart.
Chad Reed was pushed to the breaking point. Ricky Carmichael was forced into early retirement.
Dozens of others basically gave up!
The man is a legend and left a legacy that will never be forgotten!
This dude absolutely CHANGED the way people race Motocross. He definitely is a transcendent figure and is one of my favorite athletes of all sports.
on that last clip his grip is litterally 1 inch off the ground while hes hauling ass. James stewart is the best goddamn warrior this sport has really
Bruh have you seen Travis Pastrana... he makes this guy look like a beginner.
IDontBelieveInPenises the guy who doesnt race and just does backflips?!? ok buddy your a 🤡🤡
Garrett Gustafson Umm... the dude stopped going to X games because it wasn't challenging anymore for him...
IDontBelieveInPenises they both are powerful js7 is a pure racer Travis is just all the way around bad ass. You can’t compare them.
IDontBelieveInPenises cause he made more money doing nitro circus thats why dont be a fool😂. Js7 doesnt do backflips and Travis cant hold a candle to James in racing
Show us the f...ing landing !
Assholes.
the truth is. he doesnt even land the trick! its all fake and there are matts tp catch his fall!
@@Bibibosh they show the landing in different videos he lands it
Rumors said, he land his bike in atlantic.
@ we know we want to see it
I'll admit
The first time I saw him do this I was like
What in the world is that man doin' !?!?
Then I watched him pass three people doing it.
I was truly impressed
Throttle almost sliding against the ground!!!!!! Wow. I did that once but I was already laid over in the dirt. I fell lol. Lowside tip in a sand berm that blew out
Jonathan Souza I was thinking that if you touch the bars you crash. What did he have there for clearance, 2 inches
I have my own move.. it’s called the willy scrub.. I do it in the shower a lot when the old lady passes on me.
Damn. Good one.
😂😂😂
😭😭
1. Pull panties down
2. Insert
That one made me laugh. Omg
never get tired of watching this
Anyone else watch this every 3 months when it re-emerges from the depths of UA-cam lol
The best and most insane motocross rider of all time
Not single one landing shown. Great job
+Motocross Addicts it's not me, but this video makes it like he can't land any one of those, they wouldn't cut out all of them otherwise
Gusto if chuck norris rode moto he would only jump, never land
Gusto
I would think the jumps would flatten, out of pure fear of Mr, Norris
HeyDude93gt truth. Nothing wants to get hit by Chuck Norris not even jumps
I know, I wanna see the recover portion too wtf
When you're afraid of heights but love to jump. Lol
Underrated lol
He ain't afraid of nothing....
Lol
OK? I'm a street bike rider. What is the point of it?
@tvdinner325 Stay low in the air to either pass someone or keep a good gap in front of someone your beating.
It reduce lap times significantly also.
The biggest issue I’ve seen with people learning to scrub is speed. A lot of people don’t understand this move is out of necessity as James stated. A lot of guys go into it timid w/ a lack of speed and end up on the ground. It’s a beautiful move that feels effortless when it’s done correctly.
This guy is on another lever. His voice so inspiring. Not condescending. Just great advice. You can here he's so smart. So committed yet humble. Big up to you bro. Cheers
We all miss James “Bubba” Stewart. Mega Talent & Determination. Super Entertaining. These MX Dudes are like Gods to me!!
(Figuratively).
Damn James, you are what God gives to all he loves!!! And you are humble with the gifts that he has given you you're a great Rider bro one of the best..😎
This was going to go or blow’ he sent it at all times! Most exciting dirt bike racers off all time! Incredible’ I was blessed to watch him live 3 times.
The king of the scrub!
+Ride or Die Hell yeah : D
2P 2R Ahaha
Ride or Die moshi
.. and the King of crashing.....
Also the inventor of this Manoeuvre
his boot is draging in the dirt on the last one, freaking insane. trust, he lands everyone.
Simply amazing. I remember the first time I saw him do this and it’s still incredible.
Truely awesome. The inventor. "I don't do it alot, but when I do, I make it count" Fun fact: if tires are off the ground I can't get back on gas to go faster. This was literally for scrubbing "hang time" by fractions of seconds. If your head to head with someone and go off the same face. Who ever tires hits ground first. Well obv advantage. The roaming single in vid prime example. Nothing like when he is a bike length behind guy and lands before him.
It also allows him to approach the jump faster. Without the scrub you have to limit your approach speed or you will over jump the landing and flat land which can be disastrous on big jumps. By removing the rebound with scrub you won't jump as far which allows you to carry more speed into the face.
It cuts .75 seconds off the air time which translates into an additional .75 seconds of acceleration between the hills. It's brilliant.
Great lesson. Bubba knows how to explain the moves, and the 'feel' of the technique as it is when done properly. Many of the top riders cannot articulate what they do,or break down a useful technique into its basic steps. More!
because he is so smart
Awesome !!
I could watch this short vid a dozen times .... unreal.
That last quote.... Dudes a badass!! Mad props
James Stewart will in fact be the GREATEST that has ever gone it. No one can ever replace him.
Ahhh, richie "ALL CAPS" horton is back. Whatchoo mad about today RICHIE?
Holy cow. The skill it takes to do this. Amazing footage
Wow! Impressive. And got to respect his humility.
just an awesome vid/athlete as usual from red bull. I truly expect to see new tire designs because of this. my racing put me in a chair, but I still live/thrive for our sport to advance in every direction available!!! you go, James!
My kids are learning to ride so it’s fun to show them stuff like this as they understand better how amazing this actually is
One of the coolest moves in moto cross. Saved so much time.
I have watched this guy his whole carrier and he is top knotch in every way. Keep both wheels in the grove BUBBA YOU THE MAN
Flew James on Pvt flight once. Very nice gentleman...amazing talent.
Always so cool to me when people invent a whole new technique in something, especially when it changes the whole thing. Like the Fosbury flop in high jump
Thanks it is a sweet move,I did something similar at Gainsville in 1997,only because my bike had a broken and malfunctioning power valve, and only had power close to top end, which sucked so on the finish line hill,I hit a bump near the bottom of the hill and laid the bike over just to land early on the edge if the top of the hill to get a long run at the new double they just put in,I was just playing jumps are all I cared about, later K DUB ,and RC,started using my line, the pro race...so that was rewarding, but I seen u do this and the progression of it u used to do a little squash at first just to totally kill rebound,it bad ads and so cool, but know doubt it looks a little scary dragging that peg low...u never know when the heat will get to ur fork and shock and affect ur ride height....piece out, nice slow mo,and great camera work.....
Just beautiful !!! :o
Really miss you in the supercross, James. Talent is talent!
I’m so happy the X sports are not trending in same direction as PC culture!
Keep up the progression !
That was so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye
That's a low low low scrub. Bubba man, your awesome. The best!
Why is everyone complaining that they didn't show him land it? This is his version of a "scrub" and he is the master at it. I've seen him do it plenty of times on tv and videos.
Super strong video capture of that move. Very nice.
Nobody. No person. No thing. Will ever compare or compete with the level this guy was on. Hands down
RC4.
You forgot Jeremy McGrath ?????
@@glutenfreegam3r177 and Jeremy McGrath ?? Right
@@dominicchallenger5880 What McGrath did for the sport was unmistakably awesome for sure but I can comfortably say that there are NO other riders that could compete on the level with RC for long. Nearly 10 years he straight DOMINATED both MX & SX (13 championships between the 2 series) w/ 2 perfect MX seasons nestled in there. I will say this...MX & SX would NOT be there sport it is today without good ol JM!
1:29 what a beautiful movement! Congratulations!
Some amazing footage man, dope.
Congrats,James !!!You really "Bubba Scrubbed" it !!!!!!!
Dang man. That’s friggin awesome.
That’s a sick move, luvz it.
This is just awesome to the max!
This was such a game changer in MX, Down-Hill mountain bikers do it for the same reason, less time in the air, faster times at the finish. & Yes there is a difference between the Bubba-Scrubb, and the Scrub.
very informative and well put together!
Wow! Damn! That's cool and different! Thanks.
James is a BRILLIANT rider, AND he has the best grin in motocross...!
Gives me chills.
1 of the best to ever do it.. great champion and probably the fastest of all time..
Makes me smile Everytime ❤️
I finally know the name of it!!! Coolest move in mx.
amazing skill, amazing super slow mo!
Marty Smith ( R.I.P.) was scrubbing back in the mid seventies , the track at Herman NE had a big jump the led into a left hand sweeper , Marty scrubbed it beautifully. Taking nothing away from James as he definitely changed the sport and is insanely gifted .
In my view James and Danny Chandler (R.I.P.) are may be two of the most naturally gifted riders in the sport.
This is beautiful!
That's absolutely amazing
The things this man does is unreal!!
Definitely my favorite rider to watch!
Absolutely
Definitely my favorite rider to watch CRASH!
Total classic, no one can deny
Nice maneuver.
Love that hugging the ground at 1inch!!
>:)
My all time favorite rider. He’s why I watch super cross
You young kids today with your high tech tires, brakes, and suspension...back in the Golden Age of motocross we had balls out 2-stroke-pucker-your-ass power and not much else. This is pretty cool, neat to see so many sports continueously raising the bar.
JS7 is an amazing rider... saw him on a 80cc at Broome hitting a huge downhill triple that only a few big class riders at the time could do
Loved the landings man
Very impressive Bubba!👍
The last thing to leave the ground ?.....anyone ? Anybody?.... The handlebar end!! Watch the vid again till the very VERY end and you will see he brushes the dirt with his bar end and then his pinky finger flicks the dirt ! That's ultimate control if the bike right there and more finesse than a brain surgeon. I love watching these slo no films. When you disect the difference of riders in slo mo you can see why stewart was so much faster than everyone else. Everyone always talks about the raw natural talent that windham had and I'm not taking that away from Kevin but when they slow down the tape of stewart you can see he has that smoothness and talent that windham had he was just so fast it's hard to pick up on
Dude I'm 53 yrs old and the guy that taught me to ride in the early 80s showed us how to do this. Nothing new. Just another name. Ride on bro.
video super cool .. too chic. i am fa of james very fa. I’m a fa since he started. i'm brazilian and i like his style of driving. friends I even sent a message to him on his isnagram, I'm a fan of character. congratulations for the channel that is always promoting and making videos better.
Absolutely any hate you ever hear or see is 99% gonna come from younger kids who weren't old enough to remember watching motocross in the 90's all the way up until now. You have absolutely no say in shit! We watched this guy from a kid explode his talent all over the MF track and no-one will ever be James again!
ua-cam.com/video/kXriMVFlWoY/v-deo.html
I would like to point out the fact that Bubba did not invent the scrub.
We used this technique back in the early 1980’s in BMX racing.
Yes he is very good at it!
And is an incredible ambassador the sport!!
Firstly, it’s a Bubba Scrub, not just a plain ol’ scrub. Secondly, you couldn’t pull a Bubba Scrub off on a bicycle ‘cause you’d need to pedal to get power down to the ground on landing
Miss this guy is Supercross and Motocross!
I scrubbed a small jump coming out of the woods once. It was an awesome feeling, I've never done it again
Anyone doubts Stewart, more than anyone in history, changed Motocross forever?
Pure talent, literally inches above the ground...
And i was thinging it was a movie that i had not seen with Jimmy Stewart. Awesome move.
I mainly follow MotoGP/2/3, I stopped watching MX/SX at the end of McGraths career. I’ve been catching up on the 11-15 era.
I’m of the opinion that this guy could have been one of the greatest ever if he was more consistent. So talented and fast.
James...he went from pretty much last to first in a supercross race in 2014. Who else could have done it?
halfasheep Imo, Carmichael when he was at his pinnacle could have done it. I mean, the guy was bloody unstoppable. Or McGrath but it was so long ago, MX and SX have evolved too much since then. But you're right, not a lot of riders are capable of such a thing
Mac Mourning +halfasheep Lol does Ricky count when he lapped the entire field or does the 2 perfect seasons count, maby its when he beat James every week end. Dont take this the wrong way James is one of the most talented riders I've ever seen but hes not the only one
Maczust63 According to RC himself, James Stewart is the fastest person to ever ride a dirtbike, period.
Fred Crider III He is so fast that he rides it beyond the point where he could control it and that's why he had so many crashes in his career. A lot of those crashes cost him races.
blablafingbla I know. Its the difference between being the best there ever was and the fastest there ever has been. He stayed on the edge a lot. But, lets not forget the perfect outdoor season and the two indoor championships. He's shown consistency and I think this coming sx season will be his.
In order to scrub that well you have to have crazy stiff front shocks. And you have less traction on that front tire. With that being said when Smith was young I do remember him doing filthy passes using the Bubba scrub. It was cool to see.
MAD PROPS to one of the best of all times. #RESPECT
i bubba scrubbed my gf last night and she left me
Hopefully there wasn’t bumps up to it and you could slide both wheels off the face of it
dude, pump it and dump it, hit it and quit it!!
Hahaha, that's funny!
I just pictures Taj in Van Wilder lubed up sliding off the chick onto the floor 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 can't stop laughing
Should have done one of Carmichael's moves 🤣
He figured out a way to ride smarter. Game changing. Awesome.
As I understand more and more about Motocross this dude is Biggie smalls🎶 unbelievable.. only athleates that above average innovate new moves in a sport I understand his methodology the speed he uses he goes all out or nothing at all the amount of shape he had to be to continue those races in 29 laps this dude is a real athlete and to me he's underrated despite all the accolades if they really break down the contribution and style techniques it would be justified why he is to me the greatest..Braap🤙🏾
Looks great 🥂🍾
bubba is good people had the pleasure to meet him and his family thru my cousin tony haynes the first 259 broke his neck but it happenes james and james sr malcom whole fam just are some good people god bless yall
This comment is proof America spends way too little on education
