Super Slow-Moto: The "Bubba Scrub" w/ James Stewart

  • Watch an ultra slow-mo explanation of the scrub by the man who brought it to moto: James Stewart.
    No riding technique has revolutionized modern motocross like the Bubba Scrub. When James Stewart hopped on the pro scene in 2002 at a ripe 16, he brought with him enough youthful exuberance to shame a Justin Bieber concert. What’s more, it showed in his riding. Stewart was always an animated rider, moving all over the bike when he was on the track.
    During his early years as a pro, he developed a technique of throwing the bike sideways on the face of jumps, which allowed him to hit the jumps with more speed while at the same time staying lower than other riders. This ultimately allowed him to put power to the ground more quickly. What became known as the Bubba Scrub not only helped lap times, it also looked awesome.

      Heh, heh, I was winking to myself, thinking of how I would carry this off back in my MX days in the early '70s - at the bikes most horizontal, I would have likely been turning loose of the grips, throwing my arms outward and upward, preparing for a full body slam landing in the boonies...! Tongue in cheek of course but things like this we only started seeing in the experts when they came over from Europe.

      You are absolutely correct, most of the people commenting don't have a clue how serious of a move that is or just hitting a legitimate double alone for that matter. I rode for 5 or six years before I gathered up the balls to hit a real double. It's amazing how safe a tabe top made me feel

Or holds up at least with McGrath, Windham and some other boys my mind is blanking on. I still remember how DOMINANT RC was. Bubba was always faster but he would push to hard and was injured too much. Man the sport is gone now. Now it’s all about flips n tricks but this guy is on the Mt Rushmore for sure. The biggest issue I’ve seen with people learning to scrub is speed. A lot of people don’t understand this move is out of necessity as James stated. A lot of guys go into it timid w/ a lack of speed and end up on the ground. It’s a beautiful move that feels effortless when it’s done correctly.

    Truely awesome. The inventor. "I don't do it alot, but when I do, I make it count" Fun fact: if tires are off the ground I can't get back on gas to go faster. This was literally for scrubbing "hang time" by fractions of seconds. If your head to head with someone and go off the same face. Who ever tires hits ground first. Well obv advantage. The roaming single in vid prime example. Nothing like when he is a bike length behind guy and lands before him.

    • @jamesnelson6381
      @jamesnelson6381 3 роки тому

      It also allows him to approach the jump faster. Without the scrub you have to limit your approach speed or you will over jump the landing and flat land which can be disastrous on big jumps. By removing the rebound with scrub you won't jump as far which allows you to carry more speed into the face.

  • @timhallas4275

    Thanks it is a sweet move,I did something similar at Gainsville in 1997,only because my bike had a broken and malfunctioning power valve,and only had power close to top end,which sucked so on the finish line hill,I hit a bump near the bottom of the hill and laid the bike over just to land early on the edge if the top of the hill to get a long run at the new double they just put in,I was just playing jumps are all I cared about,later K DUB ,and RC,started using my line,the pro race...so that was rewarding,but I seen u do this and the progression of it u used to do a little squash at first just to totally kill rebound,it bad ads and so cool,but know doubt it looks a little scary dragging that peg low...u never know when the heat will get to ur fork and shock and affect ur ride height....piece out,nice slow mo,and great camera work.....

    You young kids today with your high tech tires, brakes, and suspension...back in the Golden Age of motocross we had balls out 2-stroke-pucker-your-ass power and not much else. This is pretty cool, neat to see so many sports continueously raising the bar.

    JS7 is an amazing rider... saw him on a 80cc at Broome hitting a huge downhill triple that only a few big class riders at the time could do

    The last thing to leave the ground ?.....anyone ? Anybody?.... The handlebar end!! Watch the vid again till the very VERY end and you will see he brushes the dirt with his bar end and then his pinky finger flicks the dirt ! That's ultimate control if the bike right there and more finesse than a brain surgeon. I love watching these slo no films. When you disect the difference of riders in slo mo you can see why stewart was so much faster than everyone else. Everyone always talks about the raw natural talent that windham had and I'm not taking that away from Kevin but when they slow down the tape of stewart you can see he has that smoothness and talent that windham had he was just so fast it's hard to pick up on

    Absolutely any hate you ever hear or see is 99% gonna come from younger kids who weren't old enough to remember watching motocross in the 90's all the way up until now. You have absolutely no say in shit! We watched this guy from a kid explode his talent all over the MF track and no-one will ever be James again!

    I would like to point out the fact that Bubba did not invent the scrub.
    We used this technique back in the early 1980’s in BMX racing.
    Yes he is very good at it!
    And is an incredible ambassador the sport!!

    • @kevinxodemonth
      @kevinxodemonth Рік тому

      Firstly, it’s a Bubba Scrub, not just a plain ol’ scrub. Secondly, you couldn’t pull a Bubba Scrub off on a bicycle ‘cause you’d need to pedal to get power down to the ground on landing

    I mainly follow MotoGP/2/3, I stopped watching MX/SX at the end of McGraths career. I’ve been catching up on the 11-15 era.
    I’m of the opinion that this guy could have been one of the greatest ever if he was more consistent. So talented and fast.

    James...he went from pretty much last to first in a supercross race in 2014. Who else could have done it?

    • @Pneuma199
      @Pneuma199 9 років тому +19

      halfasheep Imo, Carmichael when he was at his pinnacle could have done it. I mean, the guy was bloody unstoppable. Or McGrath but it was so long ago, MX and SX have evolved too much since then. But you're right, not a lot of riders are capable of such a thing

    • @Maczust63
      @Maczust63 9 років тому +9

      Mac Mourning +halfasheep Lol does Ricky count when he lapped the entire field or does the 2 perfect seasons count, maby its when he beat James every week end. Dont take this the wrong way James is one of the most talented riders I've ever seen but hes not the only one

    • @japslapr
      @japslapr 8 років тому +11

      Maczust63 According to RC himself, James Stewart is the fastest person to ever ride a dirtbike, period.

    • @blablafingbla
      @blablafingbla 8 років тому +9

      Fred Crider III He is so fast that he rides it beyond the point where he could control it and that's why he had so many crashes in his career. A lot of those crashes cost him races.

    • @japslapr
      @japslapr 8 років тому +3

      blablafingbla I know. Its the difference between being the best there ever was and the fastest there ever has been. He stayed on the edge a lot. But, lets not forget the perfect outdoor season and the two indoor championships. He's shown consistency and I think this coming sx season will be his.

    In order to scrub that well you have to have crazy stiff front shocks. And you have less traction on that front tire. With that being said when Smith was young I do remember him doing filthy passes using the Bubba scrub. It was cool to see.

    As I understand more and more about Motocross this dude is Biggie smalls🎶 unbelievable.. only athleates that above average innovate new moves in a sport I understand his methodology the speed he uses he goes all out or nothing at all the amount of shape he had to be to continue those races in 29 laps this dude is a real athlete and to me he's underrated despite all the accolades if they really break down the contribution and style techniques it would be justified why he is to me the greatest..Braap🤙🏾
