Thanks for this vid. I'm repairing my 1999, Craftsman Air Compressor with the same problem. It builds pressure but takes far too long. Now off to the parts hunt. Great vid. 💯

Hey Chaz! Thanks so much for the DIY video! I have the same exact compressor and ordered the parts like you stated and completed the rebuild without an issue! You're video was extremely useful! now for the beer as indicated in the video!
Awesome! Another viewer clued me in on what I thought was an exhaust port is actually an air intake, the filter helps keep dust from getting in and ripping up gasket over time. I cut a sponge and taped in as a filter and is working. Hopefully you got the gasket into cylinder without ripping on first attempt, I needed two, that part was a pain in the A#*.
FYI as pointed out by a few viewers, the plastic part I left off by accident and eventually put back on, is an air intake port. Make sure you buy 2 gaskets, I creased my first one trying to cram into cylinder and screwed it up. Good luck and thanks for watching! Subscribe for more videos of random crap.
HI, Thanks for the video! I may do the "rebuild kit" over the winter. I'll save a link to your video for that. My compressor looks like the one in your video and I wondered if you were familiar with adjusting cutout pressure on that pressure switch. If so could you provide any info on adjusting the pressure switch?
I twisted the black screw thing in front of the right gauge until it cut off building pressure at140psi vs running until maximum 200. You might have to play around with setting to get where you want. Thanks for watching and good luck with the rebuild!
Without an air filter for the intake, that thing was designed to fail early on, especially if you're using it in a dusty particulate environment! The motor shroud is not going to do much to keep dust and dirt out of that piston gasket. Thanks for the video, Chaz! Now I can fix mine, too! ;-) Question: could you have salvaged that old plate with some rust remover like Blaster (Metal Rescue)? Would be good to have an extra one on hand if salvageable!
Yep I agree that what I originally thought was a muffler of some sort is actually the air intake, I’m filtering the air now and hopefully I’ll get another 20 years out of it again. No idea if the part can be cleaned, I’ll have to try if I can locate the part in my disaster area of a garage. Thanks for watching!
Great video, but your "exhaust port" is actually the intake, and the "foamy thing" is the air filter. The special powers it has keeps debris from entering the cylinder and causing you to rebuild your compressor more often! :)
Yes someone else pointed that out awhile back, the more you know 🌈⭐️ 😀. I have it filtered-up and still building pressure like a champ. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing this informative "how to" video. Have the same compressor, it takes ~ 8 min to fill the tank from empty to full. How long does it take for yours after you rebuild the pump ?

these rocking piston airless compressors are built under many different names, mine is a devilbiss but it looks exactly the same and uses the same parts. really critical to make sure there is a filter element in the intake housing, these things can't tolerate any dirt or dust going through them as the piston seal is the most fragile part.
Thanks Chaz, I just got a congratulations email from goggle the other day for finally getting 100 subscribers. LOL. I have subscribed to yours. No clue, the extent of my compressor knowledge is what you see in the video; not much. My “guess” would be the gasket that makes the air-tight connection to the piston wall is creased or on weird which is causing it to stick until you help it get going? The only way to find out is to unplug and take it apart. Take pictures of bolts and parts as you are disassembling so you have a reference when you put back together. Look online for parts, try eBay first then Amazon or a local small engine shop if available. Good luck!
I did this exact thing on the exact same compressor. It ran good for about 10 seconds and it threw a rod. Snapped it off and the plastic fan cooling blade exploded. Something else is wrong.
Nope, it’s what you see in the video. Take note that what I refer to as exhaust port is actually the air intake port/filter area. Since I’m not a professional compressor mechanic I misidentified the part…. MY BAD. Good luck fixing your compressor and thanks for watching.
why another 100, you can get a kit for about $40 now days, used to be $20 before sears sold craftsman, then the only other thing you need to do is open up the bearing and flush it clean with break clean then repack it with grease, the whole job will cost you about $50 and 30 minutes of your time. a couple words of caution when reassembling, don't over tighten the head bolts, they screw into soft aluminum and can strip pretty easy and you need to wedge the rod when tightening the cooling fan because of you don't get it tight enough the bolt will back out and the cooling fan will start wobbling until it finally explodes......
My compressor starts working and builds pressure up to 150psi but sometimes during work it will not start and won't keep tank charged. Sometimes it turns on only for a few seconds then goes quiet. Sometimes I hears something that it wants to start like air going somewhere through the pipe for about 2 second and then quiets and stays like that. Fails to keep up pressure in tank when I use it. Pressure goes low as 50psi but compressor doesn't start. Then I had to open drain valve to release remaining air pressure in the tank. Disconnect it from AC power for few minutes and it starts working again build up to 150psi again. I don't hear any air leaks. What could be wrong?
No idea I’m just an average dude who tries to fix stuff before paying someone else to do it. Sounds like a possible electrical issue try plugging into a different outlet and check your cord? Sorry I’m probably no help here, this might be a fix job for a pro. Good luck!
Sounds like pressure switch going bad . Taking the plastic cover off will reveal a 30 microfarad run capacitor . Take off the end cover the black one has the start capacitor that has a resistor on it. Goodluck
Make sure the outlet isn’t the same breaker that powers other items that suck a lot of electricity. My compressor outlet in the garage is on the same breaker as our dehumidifier in the basement, in the summer (now) I have to run downstairs and unplug so I don’t blow the breaker. Just make sure everything associated with the same breaker is off; lights, tv, etc. and you should be good!
For my videos I usually crack open a Labatt Light, that’s what I have on hand for taking to hockey, they make for easy to drink post game sippers in the locker room.
Goodluck

@@ProjectswithChaz gracias
@@polosumano8217 Buena suerte, gracias por mirar.
I have the same air compressor and it keeps blowing my circuit breaker, any ideas?
Make sure the outlet isn’t the same breaker that powers other items that suck a lot of electricity. My compressor outlet in the garage is on the same breaker as our dehumidifier in the basement, in the summer (now) I have to run downstairs and unplug so I don’t blow the breaker. Just make sure everything associated with the same breaker is off; lights, tv, etc. and you should be good!
Replace the capacitors
What kind of beer was that you drink 🤔
For my videos I usually crack open a Labatt Light, that’s what I have on hand for taking to hockey, they make for easy to drink post game sippers in the locker room. The random beer in the video was something someone left at my house and it tasted like piss. I like to drink local Michigan brewed IPA’s like Bells Two Hearted or Founders All Day IPA. 👊🏻🍺
@@ProjectswithChaz never tried those. Ima have to order a case n shipped to Texas 😝
That is truly a Mickey mouse operation
Fixing my compressor myself… ok call me Mickey! Thanks for watching.
@@ProjectswithChaz I wasn't talking about you I was talking about the way that compressor was made no you did great.
@@RobertDickens2002 No worries, hopefully you get your compressor back in action if that’s why you watched. Have a good one ✌🏻
Exhaust port?? That's the intake and that foam thing is the air filter. The exhaust is the air the goes into the tank hahha. 😂😂 don't quit your day job. I'm impressed you were able to put it back together correctly with your lack of knowledge of an engine. Well oil less engine
@@GreySlum thanks jerky, if you read the comments that’s been discussed 20 times. Thanks for watching!
*intake. Exhaust goes to the tank.
...the missing foam piece is what caused it to fail. The foam piece is an air filter for air going in (not for noise on "exhaust")
@@Florida-cracker That makes sense, now I know! I have a sponge in there now and has been working. Thanks for the informative comment.
you didnt show it build to pressure 150 u didnt show prices of parts!
@@bjacker7019 it was building pressure the needle was moving, I wasn’t going to film 3 minutes of loud noise and a needle. Prices are probably double now from when I filmed thanks to inflation. Thanks for watching!
NO SOUND!
Must be on your end I just played it and there’s sound.
@@ProjectswithChaz Truly weird. Works just fine today! Thanks for addressing.
You should learn the proper terminology for the parts before you post how to videos ! mufflers and intake filters are very different items for one. the list is too long to go into any more
Yes thank you, someone pointed that out and I posted the proper function of the part. I’m not a professional air compressor mechanic but an average dude who saves money by fixing his own shit. Plenty of content on the interwebs if you don’t find mine useful.
It looked like the needle was bobbing around abd not taking air. Then you took the camera away from it 😂
I realized that after I uploaded and watched, it definitely works I just used it last week! Thanks for watching
