I was taught to put a straight pin into the end of the gathering and then to wrap the thread around the pin to keep the gathering threads in my fabric.

It was a real happy eye opener recently when I realised I can take any favourite, well fitting top pattern and add tiers to make a dress without a pattern for the tiers. The method is just like you said and you can make it any length or even have a longer tier first then a shorter one. For wovens , it goes quickly just ripping the width. Then, I’ve been using a zigzag stitch over thin crochet pearl cotton. ( method I recently saw and learned on UA-cam) It gathers beautifully. I used to always do your method, and it works very well for even gathers but takes a bit longer. I also add all the tiers to the front, then all the tiers to the back, then I join front to back at side seams. It makes it just a bit easier to handle the shorter tier lengths when attaching. I just match it at centres, then gather. Not to take away from your method, I’m just more impatient and like this quicker, easier method. ( and I dont have a small waist like you so I have a lot more fabric to work with. 😊) Anyway, I’m in love with this dress type and being summer here I’ve been whipping them on the machine in a variety of fabrics and lengths . It’s fun and easy.

The dresses came out beautifully and look great on you. The tutorial was great too. I liked the way you showed how you did each step and how you determined how deep and long each layer would be. I will be using your video to guide me in making a dress like this for myself. I love jersey fabrics and this will be fun to make and wear. Thank you so much!

Thanks so much, Lucy! I am putting a tiered skirt in a Sagebrush Top! I am cutting it out while I watch your video. Your tiered dress turned out so lovely!

Thanks for this tutorial. Although I'm not making a tiered dress, I am making a maxi dress with a gathered skirt that attaches to a fitted bodice, and love how well you explain things.

Sew Essential, it would be great if you demonstrate this sort of tutorial with contrasting fabrics. I couldn't distinguish one tier from the other.

    Hi Lucy,
Thanks for explaining this so well.
I have one question tho: How do you ensure that the waistseam will stretch enough for when you are putting on and taking off the jersey dress. I don't remember there being a zip?
    Many thanks, Sue.

Wow that is gorgeous. It helps so much to see the process and opens up a world of possibility. What if you wanted to have the tier sit on top instead of 'in seam'? How would that be different?

This is exactly the kind of tutorial I’ve been looking for. I’ve got some jersey fabric that I want to make a tiered dress with but didn’t have a pattern or the confidence to have a go. But thanks to you I do now! Just one question, would you add clear elastic at the waist to help it keep its shape? I’ve done this with other projects when the pattern indicated to.

Very useful tutorial, thank you. I have an overlocker foot that gathers and attaches two tiers at the same time. Would you recommend attaching all the tiers on the flat, cutting off any excess then sewing the side seams? Thanks.

A tip is to mark the centre and , it makes it easier to even out the gathers

  • @natalierobertson6489

Love your tutorials! When you join the two tiers together, after you’ve attached the first tier, do you gather the bottom of it too to join it to the next one that is gathered and ready to sew?

  • @elaine58100

I really love this. My only question is, what happens if the fabric drops and changes the length of the skirt part. I usually let dresses hang before hemming them. So would I have to unpick the tiers and and re sew them back together. It sounds complicated to me or am I just thinking too deeply about this? Apologies! The fabric I am going to use is a Atelier Brunette and from a previous dress I made with this fabric dropped quite a lot. Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thank you Lucy :)

Another great tutorial Lucy - thanks very much. Presumably you used a stretch stitch when you were sewing on the sewing machine? And was it a 3 thread overlock? Thanks very much.

Lovely dress! I live in the Middle east so because of the warm climate I will go for shorter sleeves. Will the same method apply to no streth wowen fabric as well or are there things to take in consideration?
