    I agree with everything you did in this series.. however i like to top dress with compost instead of peatmoss. It holds the moisture better and provides added nutrients to the soil... and its cheap

    I was excited about my project bc the weather was perfect around 70 degrees here in northern Ohio when I started. The frustrating part it we are expecting record highs here the next week with temps in the 90s and no rain. I'm not looking forward to seeing the water bill but I'm keeping the ground as moist as possible. I really could use a few days of rain.

      Seed does best in September in Ohio. Cool weather with morning dew. Ground is always moist.

    Added this info to my overseeding regime for my backyard. I have a slope out there and I topped the seeding with straw to keep the seed in place. Worked good, yet I have spots that didn't do as well. I'll use your procedures here to right the ship. I have Bermuda grass in No. Texas so i have to get this done before the grass hibernate. Tks.

    I actually see your point here about KBG and how slow it grows :( I'm in the pacific northwest and I think PRG and a KBG mix for my overseeding this weekend would thrive well. I also like your idea on using Milorganite down with your seeds to prevent current grass from overgrowing or throwing the starter fert a little later. Keep them videos coming my friend!

    I will try using a thin layer of Peat Moss when over seeding with Rye over my Bermuda this fall. I prefer the hand Whizz over that the Turf Builder Edge Guard Mini, much better control. Also I prefer to use a lot more seed than recommended, at least 25lbs per 1000sf. It comes in a lot thinker that way. I also do love the Rye grass. In many way I prefer it over the Bermuda and it is a lot easier to grow.

    I over seeded my yard last year and like yours spring brought a green lush lawn. Neighbors were very envious But come July we had a very dry summer and my yard went to crap. Weeds, nuts edge, and brown spots beyond anything I ever seen. Only now in Sept after putting down 30lbs of Pennington and just last night another 15lbs of Scotts are the bare spots starting to fill in. The weeds are still abundant. My theory is the grass was so lush when i cut it (i triple cut to cut up the grass clippings), it created to much thatch and in July I paid the price for having too lush a yard.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 років тому

      It likely didn't build thatch that quickly but it's certainly possible for newer grass to be attacked by heat stress, fungus, insects etc so those things are definitely possible too. It's always a battle to get a new lawn going and keep it going through the first summer.

    • @Eat_Pucks
      @Eat_Pucks 6 років тому

      What is your mowing height? You should be at 4” imo for healthy growth esp during the hot summer. With humidity we seen a lot of weeds and fungus - post emergence is tough. Seed it good - go over it with the aerator a few times. Next year if you don’t have a post emergence like dimension you can use in your area, hire a company to give you the 1-2 pre emergent applications. I’ve had good results with granular weed and feeds, crab preventers, but ultimately best results are with something like that. Good luck !

    For me it is easier to have True Green do it all. By the time I go and buy all of the nutrients and tools to do the work, it is easier for a company that does this day in and day out to do it for me. When I was younger I did all of the things that Ryan Knorr did. Now I pay someone to do it.It all works out in for me in the end. Thanks Ryan, you bought back a lot of memories.

    For years now the neighbors do aeration and overseeding in the fall and I don't. And yes their lawn looks great in the fall and early winter here in Charlotte NC looking thick and green. But by mid-summer mine looks far better year after year. Everyone completely relys on lawn care companies to do all the lawn care feeding and trimming in the neighborhood. All fescue lawns with auto sprinkler systems. The only difference may be is that I have brown patch applications in summer.

    Hi Ryan! Thank you so much for your great videos! I live in the southwest part of Kansas City so my weather conditions are very similar to yours. I gave up trying to grow a bluegrass lawn early last year. Unless I wanted a $500 a month water bill bluegrass just doesn't survive in the full-sun parts of my yard. So last August I power raked and then hand raked my yard. I cut my yard very short and then over seeded my yard using Scott's "turf type tall fescue". Light watering twice a day for several weeks began then followed by a second over seeding. I used Scott's winterizer fertilizer on it in early December.
    This spring I applied Scott's "triple-action" lawn fertilizer then followed 60-days later with Scott's fertilizer with pre-emergence. My lawn this extremely hot/dry summer has been just OK. Is it just too early to expect tall fescue to be thick and well established? Even in the spring time when everything was growing and thickening so well it just isn't what I was hoping for. Not at all that "carpet" look of a healthy blue grass lawn.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

      Early morning is best. Evening tends to get us into problems when the weather gets warmer and humid because the grass stays wet all night and that leads to disease problems.

    Ryan, Great Videos and Tips!! Inspired from your videos I decided do overseeding on our newly bought house. I live in Lexington, KY area and did overseeding my lawn a week back with mix of Scott’s tall fescue + Sta Green tall fescue along with sta green starter fertilizer (18-24-6). I see the seed germination is good so far.
    Question: when should I put another round of fertilizer and what fertilizer I need to use. Taking consideration of Lexington, KY area weather.
    What other things should be done before winter.
    I really appreciate your videos and effort!!

    Hey, Rayan Great Videos!! Been watching for a while. Quick question, I am in the middle of a lawn Reno. The existing lawn is full of crabgrass. I killed most of the crabgrass with Tenacity and followed your instruction in videos 1,2 and 3 (cut super low, detached) and will aerate the lawn next. My only question is the crabgrass or what's left of it takes up a lot of the lawn. Looking back I should have killed the whole lawn and started over. I was thinking of rototilling the areas where the crabgrass is prominent. I am afraid the new seed won't be able to germinate with the crabgrass root system. What are your thoughts? Do you think with a good aerating of the lawn I will be ok to overseed? or should I clean out the root system of the dead and dying crabgrass? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Was the stuff you wanted to get rid of Tall Fescue or all fescue?
      I reseeded with the "shady mix" so fine fescues: creeping red, radar, chewings, and a few others in the bag. I also added a bit of Midnight KBG. I wish I could go all KBG but I would like to get away from a big watering requirement and I have a lot of shade now.
      If the neighborhood would not have a fit I would go all clover or Dichondra. I already have micro-clover.
      Sounds like a sordid mess now that it has been written down. We'll see what thrives next year and go with that.

    Hi Ryan, if you wait a few days before putting down starter fertilizer, do you at least put fertilizer down on the previously bare spots immediately after seeding, since there isn't really previous grass to crowd out the seed? So I'm thinking you put starter down on the bare spots on day 1, then on day 3 spread starter over the whole lawn, something like that.

      Hello neighbor! I don't have any experience with that one specifically. Those names aren't some of the "elite" varieties but that doesn't mean anything is necessarily bad about it. You may have trouble getting the bluegrass going before frost but if you're ok with giving it a shot, it's still looking pretty warm for the next couple weeks. Good luck!

      I personally don't like the mix of fescue and bluegrass together just because they look different in terms of blade width. I'd go with ryegrass if you were looking for something quick. Also bluegrass will fill in pretty nicely if it gets some good fertilizer so keep that in mind as well.

      @haakenlein9873 4 роки тому +1

      Black dirt or if you were just topdressing so your baby or newly seeded grass Piet moss. It helps hold seed down until it locks down

      Haaken Lein I’ve noticed they have an enriched lawn soil in hardware stores. But they’re 2-3 time’s more expensive than regular topsoil.

    Now that your lawn is the envy of your neighborhood, do you ever feel like overseeding your thick lawn with a spreader isn't doing anything? I always notice growth in my patchwork but in thick areas I can't say I notice the seed doing any good.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  7 років тому

      I can notice new growth and shoots throughout. If you really tear into it with dethatching and an aerator then it's opened up pretty good for new seed to fill in.

    Absolutely stellar info. Step 3 shows over seeding after aeration and step 4 shows over seeding as well. Are you over seeding multiple times in the fall?

    great video, I've been considering adding a thin layer of compost to my lawn before I overseed this fall. Have you ever added compost to your lawn, and do you think its even necessary? just got my soil savvy results and working on fixing a few deficiencies.Thanks again for the great content. love the drone footage

      Definitely shouldn't hurt anything. Just make sure you don't smother the lawn that's there or it can kill it.

    I pulled out some weeds from my yard and put in some grass seeds in that area. I have been watering it since, but don't see any progress. Was this the right way to do it? If not, how could I have done it better?

    Hello Ryan. Love your stuff. You explain very clearly what to do. Sadly in Portugal, there's not many lawn tools or seeds to make a lawn like yours but I'm trying.
    I have one doubt regarding the overseeding process. I've seen you cover the big gaps with some sand. Regarding the rest of the lawn.. you just overseed? You don't cover the seed with other material? Cheers

    Ryan, thanks for these videos and your new stuff. I'm in Dubuque, IA. What would you recommend for overseeding where some parts are shady and others full sun? Do I need to get two types of seed or is there a blend that could cover both areas? Thanks!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  3 роки тому

      Many of the newer turf type tall fescues will do decent in shade but if it's dense shade I would try to open that up as much as possible for filtered light and also consider fine fescues in those areas.

    Hi Ryan, want to start the fall lean care process, but difficult to understand the step and time between each. I want to do aeration, power rake and overseeding and putting down some fertilizer . Can you please help?

    Superb video! But I am a bit confused on the part of overseeding, because seeds needs contact with soil, so in your case they didn't sit on the grass?
    I had turf laid a year ago by the developer. I moved 3 months ago to the house and I have so much dead grass, I raked it but I need to rake it more. I dont have money for powered scarifier. I am wondering if I will rake and put grass seeds if they will grow.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  2 роки тому

      The grass needs to be thin enough to see down to the soil so the seed can get there when it gets watered and also since I core aerated there's some plugs of soil on the grass for the seed to grab on to as they break down.

    How low should one mow before overseeding an existing lawn? Or just cut to normal height?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  3 роки тому

      You can go lower. It will shock it but that is fine because it set its back a little to let the new seed come in

    Can I overseed over existing lawn/grass?
    Should I plan to cut to the lowermost setting and then overseed? I am seeing a rough patch of around 100-150 sq feet in 3 diff places. The rest of the lawn looks good. I was suggested slit seeding but it’s way too expensive. I plan to just over seed all together over my existing lawn with PRG. What setting should it be please on my mini Scott’s spreader and what brand of seeds do you recommend? I live in Minnesota.
