I have a towable tine rake that works very well. I love it. I can tow it behind my mower. If you put some weight on the tine rake it detaches more aggressively. Also if the ground has been softened by recent rain, it will put parallel grooves in the ground that the seeds will fall into and keep the seed from blowing or washing away.
I had a bad spot in my yard from large pine trees and years of neglect. Last year, I used a towable thatch rake to pull up trash. Scalped it to grind up the thatch before seeding with fescue. I never did see any grass growing into the fall and was disappointed. This summer, the grass came nicely and looks way better than it ever did with only a few weedy patches outside of the concentration area.. Like you said, give it some time and the work invested can pay off.. Just did a light overseeding of the entire lawn to add uniform texture, may require several years to fix all the problems (using Scotts Heat Tolerant Blue mix)

I have 16,000 ft of lawn, so you feeling me. I like the in depth commentary on overseeding, and will be doing everthying you mentioned next week here in northern new england. I am going to fertilize a week later as well ,Ryan knorr mentioned this also and it makes alot of sense . I will have the time with tall fescue before it germinates. Great video!
I am in Michigan and need to start now before it gets too cold 🥶. However, I made the mistake😩I put down weed and feed, not thinking about getting ready to overseed . Now I have to wait two more weeks, it has been a week and a half, so the weed killer doesn’t affect the germinating seed.

Just to add on my system of overseeding , any bare spots wider than say 4- 5 " in a sunny area i will lightly top dress with peat . My house faces south west so its the hottest sun angle to have , especially around edging of concrete and asphalt witch makes your grass edges even hotter.

To get past the summer heat, the grass was long. Now I am training the grass to be lower and I am dethatching. by rake, because I don't have tons of thatch. I am going to aerate and this time use sand because I have an older property and then I'm going to seed with KB and tall fescue and top dress with loam/sphagnum. As I am typing this, I am listening and it seems like I'm a minute ahead of the video. I found that if you have any patchy areas, I've had better success with putting a lot of seed and mixing it in with the dirt. This way if some animal digs, they are just exposing other seed. I also drop chicken wire over these and the squirrels don't like it. PS. People are only concerned with weeds in spring because they bloom. Kill them now. You can see them, they aren't blooming. Establish the lawn now and they won't stand much of a chance in the spring because what is left will be crowded out. Edit: Sharpen the mower blade. If you don't you tear the grass instead of cutting it, and it looks like the top of Bart Simpson's head and the tips brown.
I skipped my dethatch and aerate for the last two seasons and now mid summer I have some small patches of pure poa triv to repair I think that tall fescue will over power the poa triv if you help it out. I am all set to give a plant groth regulator a try this fall after the dethatch. Some say it helps the roots of the tall fescue and that triv does not like it. I am afraid to do tenacity and plant growth regulator together but would like to.
Tall fescue isn’t going to over power the poa sadly. Unless you have the spreading tall fescue it’s only going to grow in place. Also tenacity won’t do anything to poa, i would dig out the poa spots and reseed with fescue.
I'm in lower Midwest. Here is my schedule. Is this good? 1) Late Sept: Early Fall fertilize (30-0-12) 2) Early Oct: Aerate 2) Overseed immediately after aerating 3) Early Nov: Late Fall fertilize (30-0-12), after last cut
I would move that all to asap, depending exactly where you’re at and what seed you’re using, you could be butting up against a hard frost within a week of putting seed down.

I am in the Midwest; southeast Michigan, Oakland county. I am on 4 acres of all lawn that needs overseeding. The soil type is sandy with about 12 inches of black peat, so I have really good soil to overseed. I don't have a sprinkler system. The grass in front of house is really nice and green. I kee pit cut at three inches. On the sides of the property, the grass thins out. I need oto overseed. Generally sppeakng, do I want to concentrate on fine fesque, or turf type tall fesque, or perennial rye?, or blue grass? I like the look of thin bladed grass. I mow with a Ford tractor, and a 6 foot Landpride mower deck pulled behind. How do I get water to large areas with garden hoses? But more importantly, what is my best seed of choice?
Any of those type of seeds will work in your area, it will really come down to what you like best. Tttf will deal with the summers the best. Check out big sprinkler.com for the watering hardware.

No one ever talks about manual pull behind dethatchers. Pull behind your riding mower. They also make them to go on the front of most lawn sweepers. It’s much easier and is more cost effective for most. Most people are not going to go rent a few hundred pound aerator either. A simple pull behind core aerator is a one time purchase. Of course this is for folks who have yards big enough to have a riding mower or zero turn.
Nice video. Wish I had seen it two weeks ago. I live not far from you in Elon but out in the country. I have about 10,000 square feet in my front yard that want to have grass. Prior it was a gravel circular driveway. I had 7 loads of dirt brought in and smoothed out and the people that did this for me planted a mix of Rye and Fescue. I then bought 50 more pounds of that mix and another 50 pounds of Kentucky Fescue and spread it. It seems all I am seeing is the Rye. Guess I did this all wrong.

I've recently been told that dethatching in the fall isn't good for the midwest and to do it in the Spring instead. The logic was to use the layer as a blanket for the winter for the grass, along with clippings. Wouldn't that impede the overseed and create a barrier from it hitting the soil?
That will depend on what you like, if you like shorter grass you would look at Kentucky blue grass and Rye grass, but both of those take more work and water to kept looking good. TTTF or turf type tall fescue like to be kept taller, think 3”+, looks really good and nice and soft, and requires less work and water.

I’m not very experienced with warm season grasses to be 100% honest, but I would think the same processes would transfer over pretty well. @thelawncarenut has tons of amazing videos on warm season grasses.

When aerating your lawn before, you do the seating, what I use as a pitchfork and put the holes in the ground I find that useful as well. It’s also a cheaper way lol but it works. Also you mentioned doing a second application of Starter fertilizer later on afterwards what about using, the winter care fertilizer which will be about 6 to 8 weeks afterwards which is not too close to getting to the winter time would that be suitable instead of using the starter fertilizer for the second time?
A pitch form isn’t curing comparison though like actual core aerating, not is it bringing soil to the top for better seed to soil contact, BUT it is opening up path ways for air/water/nutrients so it’s definitely beneficial. What’s the npk on the winter care fert?
I've only heard to use start fertilizer for the first application and then switch to a low P after that. Phosphorus moves through the soil very slowly..at least where I live in middle TN where the soil has a lot of clay.
So if you have a decent established lawn still wait on the starter fertilizer? When watering still just go easy the first week? Water like 4 times. per day 5 minutes per zone? Thank you
I did a partial restoration (pulled out the soil, where Poa annua and Trivialis were) used a pre emergent(BASF STOMP AQUA) to stop the germaination of annua seeds, put soil activator, fertilizer and then ree and overseeded the lawn. The problem was I got a bit late (becasue of the pre emergent I had to wait 45 days before seeding) and the temperatures and sun wasnt great. So the seeds eventualy came but only to about 1-1,5 inch, becasue I used a shade grass with Poa supina I also think that some of the late germ grass didnt come at all and will come in Spring if .. My question ist there a problem now with freeze to this young grass and how about the seeds that did not come yet?
come on now ... buy a SUN JOE i find that it does a much better job then the heavy duty rental ones . I comes with a rake attachment and a dethatching attachment and it works GREAT !

Sir, trying to win the Yard of the Fall trophy out here. The BLUF, currently I have centepide in Columbia, SC. I was planning to overseed with Raygrass but I read that Centepide with Raygrass will create a lot of problems. Another article advises oversees with Fescue for the fall/winter to keep the green lawn going thru the season. Do you have any advice/recommendations?
I used granular 12-12-12, liquid I used 16-21-2. Simple lawn solutions 3-18-18 is awesome also. On my SLS portion of my yard I did 3-18-18 the day of seeding and their 16-4-8 two weeks later.
Great video. Should i also use a rake to help get the seeds touching the soil? I have mowed the lawn real short and used a hand detatcher tool. So curious if the leaf rake also helpful.

I would look up when your average first frost date is in that area. If you plant something that germinates fast you might have time, pay attention to how much shade you get with the trees and that will help you determine grass type that would grow best.
Hello, and thank you...Scotts has a ton of weed and feed and the exact one you have on the video is a lot of money...$86 bad 5000Sq FT. Other Scotts weed and feed bags are only $16 for 5000 Sq ft. . Do all the weed and feed scotts bags contain the tenacity ingredient? I want that ingredient. Im in Central NJ and every Early August I get hit hard with yellow nuts edge which tenacity helps with.

I live in the NW and heard a great time to overseed is late in our fall, allowing the seed to remain, ungerminated and under the winter snow, to then emerge sometime in the spring. Thoughts?
Keep on the path of keeping it moist, maybe back it down to twice a day watering until the first mow. Then move back to your normal watering, less often but deeper.

Don’t go for a turf lawn. The trend of lawns is generally unnecessary and an unsustainable practice anyhow. Think about doing a ‘pollinator garden’ and let native species do what they do in your area- grow. Practice ‘living soil’ techniques and you’ll be way better off. Also doing this type of thing you’ll likely have the most influential yard and be the coolest kid on the block. Turf grass monocultures are really only necessary for sports fields and school playgrounds. Yeah?
Do you put down peat moss after seeding or after fertilizing? Most people say not to use weed and feed after seeding, if you do you should wait 3 or 4 weeks.......is that correct?
Any issue if I put down tenacity now, wait two weeks, then dethatch/aerate etc, then tenacity again and seed at that time? My lawn is looking pretty bad and just worried that the seed wont make good contact until i remove most of these weeds. Thanks!
It depends on your temps right now, if you’re not going to overseed you can probably skip the dethatching. Unless you have a ton of thatch then it makes it hard for the fert to easily reach the soil.

You can certainly do that, I never have on an overseed, but if you’re starting with bare dirt I would absolutely do that.

My problem with the attachment dethatcher is the space between the tines, most are 4-5 inches apart.

Rye comes up much faster than fescue, fescue needs almost double the time to come up that rye does. Keep it moist, it will come.

It 100% stops the seed from hitting the soil, obviously depending on how much thatch there is.
Also ....Spring is when new grass is coming up. You don't want to dethatch then. Do it in the FALL !

That will depend on what you like, if you like shorter grass you would look at Kentucky blue grass and Rye grass, but both of those take more work and water to kept looking good. TTTF or turf type tall fescue like to be kept taller, think 3”+, looks really good and nice and soft, and requires less work and water.

I’m not very experienced with warm season grasses to be 100% honest, but I would think the same processes would transfer over pretty well. @thelawncarenut has tons of amazing videos on warm season grasses.

When aerating your lawn before, you do the seating, what I use as a pitchfork and put the holes in the ground I find that useful as well. It’s also a cheaper way lol but it works. Also you mentioned doing a second application of Starter fertilizer later on afterwards what about using, the winter care fertilizer which will be about 6 to 8 weeks afterwards which is not too close to getting to the winter time would that be suitable instead of using the starter fertilizer for the second time?
A pitch form isn’t curing comparison though like actual core aerating, not is it bringing soil to the top for better seed to soil contact, BUT it is opening up path ways for air/water/nutrients so it’s definitely beneficial. What’s the npk on the winter care fert?

I've only heard to use start fertilizer for the first application and then switch to a low P after that. Phosphorus moves through the soil very slowly..at least where I live in middle TN where the soil has a lot of clay.

It’s definitely an added bonus to do it, but I normally don’t use it purely because it’s hard to find around me.

I did a partial restoration (pulled out the soil, where Poa annua and Trivialis were) used a pre emergent(BASF STOMP AQUA) to stop the germaination of annua seeds, put soil activator, fertilizer and then ree and overseeded the lawn. The problem was I got a bit late (becasue of the pre emergent I had to wait 45 days before seeding) and the temperatures and sun wasnt great. So the seeds eventualy came but only to about 1-1,5 inch, becasue I used a shade grass with Poa supina I also think that some of the late germ grass didnt come at all and will come in Spring if .. My question ist there a problem now with freeze to this young grass and how about the seeds that did not come yet?

Yup! Let winter kill them and put pre emergent down around 55 soil temp and the grass will grow without weed competition in the spring.

It depends when your average first frost is. If you plant something that grows fast you might be okay.

Sir, trying to win the Yard of the Fall trophy out here. The BLUF, currently I have centepide in Columbia, SC. I was planning to overseed with Raygrass but I read that Centepide with Raygrass will create a lot of problems. Another article advises oversees with Fescue for the fall/winter to keep the green lawn going thru the season. Do you have any advice/recommendations?

I used granular 12-12-12, liquid I used 16-21-2. Simple lawn solutions 3-18-18 is awesome also. On my SLS portion of my yard I did 3-18-18 the day of seeding and their 16-4-8 two weeks later.
Great video. Should i also use a rake to help get the seeds touching the soil? I have mowed the lawn real short and used a hand detatcher tool. So curious if the leaf rake also helpful.

How long do you recommend waiting to overseed after using weed and feed? When is the best time to overseed in general for east coast?
I believe weed and feed has a preemergent in it, if I remember correctly you have to wait something around 90days.

I would look up when your average first frost date is in that area. If you plant something that germinates fast you might have time, pay attention to how much shade you get with the trees and that will help you determine grass type that would grow best.

Hello, and thank you...Scotts has a ton of weed and feed and the exact one you have on the video is a lot of money...$86 bad 5000Sq FT. Other Scotts weed and feed bags are only $16 for 5000 Sq ft. . Do all the weed and feed scotts bags contain the tenacity ingredient? I want that ingredient. Im in Central NJ and every Early August I get hit hard with yellow nuts edge which tenacity helps with.
No, weed and free is a pre emergent, you want the starter fertilizer with weed control.

Sounds like a good time to me, I usually do both of those the beginning of September, depending on the temps obviously.
I live in the NW and heard a great time to overseed is late in our fall, allowing the seed to remain, ungerminated and under the winter snow, to then emerge sometime in the spring. Thoughts?
It works, but definitely not as well as overseeding right now. Probably 30% less germination than fall seeding if I had to throw a number at it.
Once seed germinates how much would u water ?!
Keep on the path of keeping it moist, maybe back it down to twice a day watering until the first mow. Then move back to your normal watering, less often but deeper.

Does Scotts Triple Action have the same effect as Scotts Lawn Food Fertilizer?
I’m not up to speed on all of their stuff, but I think the triple action has a preemergent in it.

I live in the desert, what seed would you recommend I use for an over seed? I’m completely new to all this lame care and it’s honestly overwhelming. Anything will help, thanks guys.
Don’t go for a turf lawn. The trend of lawns is generally unnecessary and an unsustainable practice anyhow. Think about doing a ‘pollinator garden’ and let native species do what they do in your area- grow. Practice ‘living soil’ techniques and you’ll be way better off.
Also doing this type of thing you’ll likely have the most influential yard and be the coolest kid on the block. Turf grass monocultures are really only necessary for sports fields and school playgrounds. Yeah?
Can you use just milorganite for fertilizer after you seed? Or what about Scott’s lawn food?
I mean… You can, but it’s not nearly an ideal fert for seeding.

Peat moss after seed, you shouldn’t be using weed and feed for months after seeding… if ever, it’s not a good product to have a great lawn with.

Any issue if I put down tenacity now, wait two weeks, then dethatch/aerate etc, then tenacity again and seed at that time? My lawn is looking pretty bad and just worried that the seed wont make good contact until i remove most of these weeds. Thanks!
It depends how long you’re talking between apps, I wouldn’t apply tenacity more than once in a two week span.
Hi I want to ask if my lawn is fully yellow should I do the detaching will it work or I should just use fertilizer on the existing grass.
It depends on your temps right now, if you’re not going to overseed you can probably skip the dethatching. Unless you have a ton of thatch then it makes it hard for the fert to easily reach the soil.
