Been using these filters since early eighties. Had the aquaclear 300 on my 90 gallon in high school. Then the 110. Still use the 300. Really hated when they changed model numbers. Numbers used to match gph. You save money on media as well.

I switched away from HOB because they were splashing the wall behind which over time caused mineral accretions. Nice that you have paneling maybe I should put plastic sheeting to protect my drywall. I like the banter with the two of you. Makes for an entertaining and informative channel!

I have almost all Marineland filters. I also have an Aquaclear 30, same problem, it's still in the box, waiting until the end of this week when I "move" an aquarium so I'll have room for it. But I'm sure it will do fine and I like the flexibility it'll give me with filter materials. Thanks for sharing despite the frustration. Hope ur trip is great.

I cut the mesh in half and made it 2 pouches of bio media, then sometimes I rinse one off and try not to disturb the other too much so I rinse it next time... also the carton your filter came in looked like 1980's design

I've put 2 aquaclear 70 hob on my 75 and later on my 90 gallon (when I upgraded) I just had to cut a few slits from the lower lip of the tank plastic rim, the aquaclear 70 doesn't need much tank modifications to fit.

Hang on Back could easily be transformed to hang on Side.
    It’s been tested and tried.
Besides, drill a row of small holes, well, actually perforate the lower intake with holes, approximately 3 mm, and cover it with a coarse filter sponge. No fry gets sucked in and the filter will run for longer before requiring cleaning.

Aquaclear filters are hands down the best. Who cares if they are wide. Jesus. They’re simply the best. Period. Been running them for over a decade. Never had one break down.

Aquaclear makes the best hang on the back filters then I would say tidal comes after both excellent filters

I run 2 AC110's on my 60 gallon. I think they are the next best thing to canisters! I run the coarse sponge that comes with them on the bottom....some fine polyester on the next layer, and then the bio media on top. Seems to keep the tank full of cichlids once and clear. Plus they are easy to clean in my opinion.

i have this filter on my 30 Gallon, it is an awesome filter.. super powerful, the only hang on the back filter i have used so far that i like, although i have Marineland filters that work wonders in canister form, i have yet to try one in hang on the tank form, sorry to hear about your filter issues.. that is the worst thing that could happen to a tank. I love Marineland and Fluval :) both are excellent to me.

I have had to cut sooooo many aquarium rims because filter companies can't seem to just make the hanger a little bit too big and just add an adjustment knob. Instead we buy a filter thats perfect for the tank and then realize it wont work because the hanger is too small. Damn azoo palm filters are set up perfect for whatever tank you want and have the adjustment knob if only they made some bigger filters

The biggest issue with me on the Aquaclears, besides the back clearance, is the inability of it to self prime. I travel a lot and need to know it will be able to restart. In my past experience if I had a momentary loss of power, the AC was unable to prime and start back up. So, I'm leaning towards a seachem tidal.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics

The Tidal and the new Penguin Pro series are both self priming and have been good filters.

Just want to add my own experience. I am a discus and pleco collector residing in Mumbai, India. 2 years ago, I started keeping aquariums. So far I own 28 canister filters and also had 6 HOBfilters (3 x aq70s and 3xfluval c3's). All hob filters died from burn out after a power cut at which point they left water and were unable to suck it back up. All 28 canisters run fine from over past 2 years and locally i get canisters for just twice the price of HOBs thanks to china next door. So i certainly would not recommend any HOB as my experience with them is nothing short of terrible.

The Aquaclear 50 only need about 3 inches of clearance, the 70 needs about 4 inches. So if the 70 was close to fitting you might want to try the 50. Also I don't like using the filter lids. It is not that they rattle, but they seem to create an airflow noise that is not present when they are not used. Instead I use a thin little rectangle of plexiglass.

I would try to get that thing turned off ASAP (or top off the tank). Yes, they can sometimes get hot - it can burn itself out over time. Usually as long as the intake is still in the water, and the intake tube has a good seal, they don't stop moving water until the water is close to the intake. I would still try to have someone get in there and top off the tank if possible. I have found that the aquaclears in general do a good job of pulling water through the intake when the water levels fall.

Best HOB filter in my opinion, but agree on width not working for some tanks. They are my go to HOB filter and its nice to have a stock of them because I almost always have spare parts. I use them as back up filtration on all my larger tanks (freshwater) that have sumps. I use only the sponge as media and I “plant” it with Philodendron and then top it with loose Matrix. The roots grow into the sponge and it rarely needs to be cleaned. Doing this does require light for the plants but a couple of mine are near a window or I use a small clip on grow light. I have one of these that is so well established I haven’t removed it for 18 mos and the impeller/motor has never stopped. Plus I don’t need to use the lids.

The easiest ways I know are - increase the water level inside the tank. If that's not possible you could turn down the flow. The other thing that can be done, but it takes more work, is use aquarium safe silicone can silicone a piece of plastic to the return so the water flows closer to the surface instead of down. Hope this helps.

Great question. I prefer the bioballs to be on top for a couple of reasons. 1) I don't want them covered in detritus, since their primary job is to hold bacteria, and detritus bound to the surface reduces that. 2) the other media does not sit flush in the rack. On the Aquaclears the water travels from the bottom up. I haven't kept aquatic turtles in a long time. The better the water through put you have the better the filter will pick up waste.

Prime Time Aquatics Thanks for the advice, didn’t know that tidbit about the bio balls. The turtle’s filter is similar to the Fluval you’re opening with that sort of saddle for the media that slides into the filter. I’m considering a canister filter for better efficiency, this 35 year old turtle is as regular than most residents at a nursing home :)

I actually had mine over flow onto the floor as well. I wound up going back to the Marineland penguin 350, which has worked better for us. Maybe check the actual pump? It can be removed from the bottom and if it's not tightened all the way it can leak as well.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for responding. But i mean were the intake tube goes in ther two groves one on each side for over flow if filters clogged and mines new and doing that

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  5 років тому +1

That may depend on the way the filter tray is packed. I usually do sponge on the bottom, filter floss, then the biomedia bag on top.

I really hate it when people throw away instructions like that. At least tell folks to glance over them, especially if they are a NEW PRODUCT to them!
See, if you had read the manual, you wouldn't have needed to "figure things" out. :P
