Great filter...I bought the Emperor 400 back in the day and I loved it! The second slots in the back for either more filter pads or just to be able to fill them with carbon socks, fantastic! I had a 75g tall with big cichlids and the water was always crystal clear...
The 2 extensions for the Intake tube were also included in the box!

I'm nearly 38, have had aquariums since I was 11 ... 2 or 3 AquaClears broke and/or killed fish ..... Have had 6-8 Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheels over the last 25 years ...100, 150, 200, 350 .... all have been PERFECT and I wouldn't use anything else. I can't say it any clearer than that. Best value for dollar. Thanks for the vid.

Just got one… So far so good. Tank is crystal clear after about 24 hours in my goldfish tank. All the other filters I’ve had only lasted about a year… So we shall see how this one does. But so far I really like it.

Just hooked mine up last week, worked great out the box. A few issues shortly after, but by removing their media and adding my own problems solved. Not wheel stall and no bypass. It's actually a great filter. Great video and info thanks for sharing.

How do you not lose your cycle doing that? If your not running the bio wheels and toss your filters you lose you cycle every month unless you have a set-up like me and have a sponge filter in your tank as well. I have a power head on a sponge in my 75 gallon tank with 2 Penguin 350 filters. I run the bio-wheels because anything that can hold cycle bacteria is a good thing. To keep the wheels spinning for 2 years and still original wheels I used vaseline to lubricate the joints and they spin freely with no issues.

I bought four because of your video. I've been very impressed with them and at half the price of an aquaclear but can fit double the amount of media? I've just been damn impressed. I use media bags filled with lava rock and then we been doing GREAT when they are cycled, I hope they will keep my pleco breeding tanks clean. I used to view these as low quality due to most people's negative opinion, stupid me...not everybody is right. I plan to buy six more.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics I really like that these don't have those stupid little black adjustable pieces that plug into the bottom like aquaclears do. Those awful pieces on those aquaclears fall off on their own, sometimes they don't fit in tight anyways and they just fall off when any maintenance needs to be done on them and get lost. It's a real pain. If other manufacturers can design their HOB filters so they fit normally on all tanks like this Marineland, why can't aquaclear? That about Aquaclear and aqueon 50's have the most annoying pieces of any HOB. Aqueon 50's has a really stupid little black rubber piece that the impeller sits in. You take that intake tube off for maintenance and that stupid little piece falls out and it's near impossible to find on a black substrate in a heavily planted tank. I guess fluval C4's have an annoying feature too, that little spray bit that sprays water on top of the middle piece gets clogged and stops, it's near impossible to clean. Marineland all the way for me now, these are just GREAT filters and so easy to work on and the filter intakes the screen is small enough I'm not necessarily concerned with fry or baby mystery snails so no more clogged intake sponges!

  • @ihatecapitolism

My Aquarclears are more trouble than they are worth. The baskets are constantly rising, even after only a few days from cleaning. Drives me crazy, that I have to clean almost every week, or the media trays rise. I think I'm going to go back to Marineland. AC are over-rated!

Bought two these on the cheap through the net from a big aquarium supply house in Buffalo. Made grinding noises right out of the box. Had two 75 gallons to filter to augment the eheim pro 3 series. Changing of cartridge media is truly simple but they're costly. I have the aqua clear 20 on my ten gallon. Works well. Use or mix and match your own media, washable sponge, but subseptable to sand intrusion on impellas in African cichlid tanks.

Threw it out. Have ACs and sponges on all 15 tanks. Two of the AC are 19 yrs old. All of them are over 15 yrs old. No problems so far. Glad you have good luck with ML. Nice video. thanks.

These filters do a good job. I have 4-350's that have been running 24/7 for 2 years so far. Also for those that do not know Marineland makes the filters for Wal-Mart's Aqua Tech filters and they are cheap and fit perfectly into the 350. You can buy a box of 6 filters for $12.73. Cons are they can be noisy with a lot of water flow sound and are not as silent as other filters. That being said they are solid and last a long time and filter well:P

I think I'll give this filter a shot. A couple of people say they don't last longer than a year or even shorter. Though I'll be using it as a 2nd filter in one of my tanks, I'm hoping it'll last a bit longer than when using it alone.

Good video, but you've raised a specter. I'm goin' nuts. You've hit my biggest beef with the present day aquarium hobby - that is, the popular configurations used by HOB filters.
    1) The 'waterfall' returns dump the filtered water right back in the vicinity of the intake spout. Preposterous. 2) The waterfall type returns do not take advantage of the filters gph ability to agitate the water over the whole surface of the tank, thereby breaking up the surface film and oxygenating the water better. In the "old days" we had the Supreme Aquaking that had a 90 degree laterally adjustable water return that could be aimed for the furthest recess of the tank. 3) The bio-wheels do next to nothing. If one thinks they fulfill any significant portion of the benefit a wet/dry trickle filter would bestow, you'd be dreaming. 4) The filter cartridges are gimmicks to provide ongoing income for the manufacturer. The floss portions are not thick enough to give effective mechanical filtering, and there isn't enough high quality carbon to make you sneeze. 5) The size of the media tanks are in no way adequate. They need to be 2 - 3 times bigger. It's the size of the beneficial bacteria bed that counts, even more than the gph, not the gimmicks. 6) They have custom parts and fittings such as a rectangular, internally connected intake tubes, that prevent customization and make you go to the manufacturer for replacement parts.
You can't tell me that the manufacturers couldn't give us a large media box and a directional return spout for the same price or a couple of dollars more, if they eliminated the gimmicks.
It's a real shame, because the modern 'magnetic drive/impeller' type motors used with today's HOBs are much superior to the old designs which had motors that needed lubrication and had bearings that burned out. So what filter makers gave in one area they took away in other areas. My strong advice is build your own. There's a hundred different builds on UA-cam or check out The King of DIY's old videos, or Pondguru's series on modifying filters for best production.

We bought four Marineland in the last year and they all suck. The two big ones we bought had impeller problems in the first month and Marineland had to send us new ones. The ten gallons never prime by themselves. Of all my tanks, the two with the Aqueon filters are always the cleanest and lest problematic. I think the Marineland filter are not good for sand either, the Aqueons eat sand all day and love it.

There’s also a good amount of gunk that’s filling up in it quicker than usual I feel like. Is it worth getting a new one? Also, the biowheels don’t spin well in it. If I get a new filter, is it worth putting my old wheels inside of the new filter? I know they say that the wheels contain good bacteria and it’s essential for your tank. Hope to hear from you soon!

The new pro series is very quiet because the pump is in the tank. You could certainly transfer the media from the old filter to the new one.

I have the 200 and just finished getting mine set up and modified. I have a prefilter, the bottom if the reservoir filled with fluval prefilter cylinders, a piece of foam and then i replaced the biowheel with a bag of fluval biomax cylinders.
I only added the prefilter cylinders in the bottom cause i had cut the foam a bit too short and was already part way into cycling lol.
You definitely have to play around with the arrangement to make sure the flow is right though.

I've always thought these were a brilliant idea for an aquarium filter. (borrowed from the sanitation industry) I've just never liked the implementation; they had to compete price wise and thus ran into some shortcomings. A gear driven biowheel would be awesome - but would really jack up the price. I like the idea of really separating the mechanical from the biological filtration - the concept is very efficient. I wonder if all the problems I hear about are because people don't clean them properly?

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  6 років тому

Ya, I think the idea is like a little drum filter for biological filtration. The biowheels stop spinning all the time, but I don't care as long as the water keeps flowing!

It really depends on stocking levels. For us we have to change them out weekly, but we also just use bulk filter floss, not the cartridges. Once they are brown throughout the entire cartridge they basically stop working.

If you have a problem with ammonia, nitrites or too much particulate matter floating in the tank you can always upgrade. I doubt you will have ammonia or nitrite issues if your tank is fully cycled so it really comes down to how the water looks. If you like it then there probably won't be a need to upgrade.

Couple things to check. 1) Is the back of the filter filled with water? 2) Is the impeller running? It will usually make a grinding-type noise before the water is fully flowing through the filter. 3) The higher the water level the better HOB filters do at pulling water through the filter. Let me know if you get it working!

I have an emperor 400 and an aquaclear 110. Now don't hate on me but I like the Marineland a bit more than the Aquaclear. The Marineland is easier to maintain, quieter, stronger, provides a lot more surface agitation with how the lip of the return is designed. My Aquaclear 110 doesn't seem to be functioning quite as powerful, maintenance is a little more time consuming, noisy from the lid rattle and motor, motor power isn't constant (motor power seems to be intermittent; you can hear in the water fall, it'll push water strong for a few seconds, then it'll quiet down a bit for a few seconds, then strong again repeatedly. Marineland wins with surface agitation. I can fill the tank about 1/2" above the lip of the return and you can surf on the waves created (sarcasm). Aquarclear barely breaks surface tension. With Aquaclear, I could only fill to about 1" below the lip to create a waterfall effect that creates little bubbles to agitate the water. The only thing I do love about Aquaclear is the space for biomedia over Marineland. If only there's was a hybrid, Marineclear! Imagine the Marineland routing water from the bottom up, through the sponge and floss, then through the space with media, then by the biowheels!

The one thing I like about the Marinelands is if the water is filled so you can't see the water line from the front they usually stay pretty quite. Obviously, that depends on the size and brand of the tank since some tank rims might be a little thicker causing the filter to sit higher.
