    Do you use AquaClears? If so, how do you set your media basket up? And if not, what do you use?

      I use Sun Sun HBL-701 HOB filter ( www.amazon.in/Sunsun-HBL-701-8-Watt-Hang-Filter/dp/B018QQ5Y6E ). It is 600 lph which is about 160 gph. I have 2 of these for my 45g and they work great! They have a perfect amount of space to work with different media. I use coarse sponge, poly fiber, bio balls, and ceramic rings and that is in order. This filter only costed me $18.

      Say I have a aquaclear 110 as well and I'm new to the hobby. I got my tank set up about a month ago and was wondering if I should be cleaning out the sponge as much as the activated carbon. They say once a month for the carbon. Should I be cleaning the sponge just as much?

    • @DilettanteCulture
      @DilettanteCulture  5 років тому +1

      @@Billybaum35 I actually don't use the carbon at all, and you need to replace the carbon if you're using it. I clean my sponges about once a month, but I use a prefilter sponge as well

      (Hagen) Fluval Aquaclear filters rule! I fill all my Aquaclear's completely with bio-sponge material making them HOB/SPONGE filters. Over the years I found the bio-sponge is every bit as good or better than the more expensive ceramic and pumice/lava rock medias. The ceramic/rock medias get coated with bio-slime and detritus and become ineffective. Manufacturers recommend replacing half the media every other month or so. They want you to buy more! Even though It can be reclaimed with a bleach/water bath.
      But I prefer the bio-sponge. It's inexpensive, cleans easily, and lasts forever and a day.

    I have used the same pair of Aquarium Systems Millennium 3000s for 20 years on my 75-gallon tank. All the tubes got brittle over about 10 years of use and cracked, so I bought extras. I have now had the impellers break twice each (one broke this week), but I was stupid and didn't order extras last time they broke (like 4 years ago), and now I can't find parts anywhere. So these filters may be on their last leg due to no replacement parts. I am running on one filter and looking for replacements.

    These filters really are the best setup hobs on the market media wise. I'm keeping fish on a very low budget right now so I have a mixture of sponge filters, aqueon quietflow hobs and aquatech hobs from walmart. I pretty much just run filter floss in my hang on backs and then I have a sponge filter in every tank to make sure I have enough surface area for bacteria. Regular hobs don't have the most room in them to pack the media in. Your videos are very well put together and informative. Idk why I never found your channel before but new sub here. One of these days I'm going to have a fish room and aquaclears lol. #goals

I can put everything in it that I want in that filter. I think you are excellent! I use the sponge it came with, some matrix beads, some phosguard and purigean with some space to spare. I think I will use some floss in it or a bit more sponge. Thank you again Michael!

    Once in a while clean, inspect and either lube or replace and lube your pump o-ring. They can leak if you allow debris and such to build up or to become brittle, this also depends on the tank supplements you use.

    Hello, I am watching videos on this filter as well as the Marineland Emperor 400 for my 65 gallon tank. It's a little confusing because some really love this one while others love the other. So I'm trying to decide which one to purchase. I bought a tank with the Marineland, Emperor already in it, but never researched it. The previous owner loved it. So, may I ask, have you ever used the Marineland...Emperor 400? and if so how do they compare? Are carbon filters really necessary, what is it they do to help the tank? there are 4 slots in the Marineland and I was wondering what goes in the gray one and what direction do they all face? lol I hope you have knowledge of the two of them, I'd love to see a comparison in your opinion. Thanks so much! Also, I am unfamiliar with the ceramic things you added? Could you explain what they are and do?

    Little bit of everything. Tetra HoBs, generic HoB from walmart and an aqueon quietflow. Sponge prefilters on all of them. Media is usually just some filter floss and more foam sponge for smaller HoBs while the larger use ceramic rings or Lava rock, sponge and filter floss.

And I unplug it a couple times a day when feeding with frozen brine shrimp. Plug it in, it always primes. Now the Marineland filters? Those almost never prime up after unplugging. Smh

    I do about 50-60gallons water change weekly ... at this time my tank and fish are clean and happy. My emmediate plan is for a second aquaclear 110 . Amazing filters..so simple and so versatile.

    Question: I need a new filter system and I am going to buy this one. My old one just has the charcoal filled bags. Can I cut the filter part off the old filter and put them inside the media in this one to maintain the beneficial bacteria during the change over? If so would I put that between the sponge and the charcoal or on top of the charcoal before the other media? I don’t want to cycle my tank by changing the filter and trying to figure out how not to do that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • @docsav1331
    @docsav1331 5 років тому +3

    Nice review! Do you think having the filter floss media 1st (below the sponge) would work better since it would catch filtered out waste before it gets embedded into the sponge? or, Is there a reason to have the sponge first? Look forward to your reply. Thank You!

    • @alexisking1431
      @alexisking1431 4 роки тому +1

      I think that would definitely be a more effective method of mechanical filtration! Either way it ends up going through both, but like you suggested, i believe most of the gunk would be caught in the floss first without clogging up the sponge with so much waste. Also the sponge can serve as a decent surface area for nitrifying bacteria as well as a form of mechanical filtration (however - the courser the sponge the better it is for beneficial bacteria - so usually a rougher and more porous sponge would be best for this). I believe if you want to set your media up this way it’s a great idea!

    Thanks for the video. Aquaclear is definitely not the quality of a Seachem or others that have the submerged on the tank side so you don't have to prime especially when the power goes out plus they are quieter. The Aquaclear is at a much lower price point making it much more price friendly it's just not a favorite.

    • @joefliss1061
      @joefliss1061 Рік тому

      When your filters are running and the power goes out the only way that would be an issue is if your water level on your tank is below the impeller on the filter. Most people keep their water level near the rim on their fish tanks. So the aquaclear will start back up and run fine when the power goes back on in one of those circumstances. I used to do smaller water changes, ones that wouldn't reach the bottom of the filter intake. I never had to reprime the filters if the water didn't fall below the intake. I do 70 percent changes now and just prime the filters now. Not a big deal at all super easy. No doubt these are the best hob filters out there and most people don't realize what they say and what you should have on your tank is totally different. I would never run 1 aquaclear on a 110 gallon I'd have 3. I ran 2 110's on a 75 and found this was near ideal in terms of filtration and water movement. An aquaclear 110 on a 40 gallon breeder is also a great setup. Ideal filtration with no dead spots but also current is present which most fish enjoy.

    I've got the exact filter and I put it up yesterday on a 75 gallon aquarium. I don't understand why it's not setting straight level. It is setting at an angel back. I kept trying to adjust the leveling device. What position should I put the leveler device? Great video! I did move it in a different spot to the right side of the aquarium and it is setting better. Should I be concerned about the filter not setting level? I have the 70 aquaclear in my 37gallon and it sets straight up.

    I'm on my 3rd freaking impeller shaft on my Fluval C4 which has the same motor as the Aquaclears, i clean the impeller every time i maintain the filter. The problem is the top of the shaft isn't held by anything causing a vibration which grinds down the metal shaft. This causes noise, Fluval bought Aquaclear designed a new C series filter but never fixed the noisy motor problem.

    • @dcphifer4307

      I had a big Marineland Penguin and I am ready for a change. The MP was noisy and spit. This 75G tank will not be too busy as it will be for my Betta and a Clean-up Crew. I just got the 75G tank, so off to get the AquaClear 110 tomorrow. I am rinsing it out, testing for leaks, and rinsing the new gravel. I will take the 3 Media bags filled with Fluval Stratum and Aquatic Peat Moss to this new tank. I will be making more bags until I run out of Stratum. I also have a Marineland Polishing Floss Pad cut to fit the existing filter, but the bacteria exchange will be great.
      I like the idea of a pre-filter on the intake tube.
      I just bought a big Sponge Filter to also help keep the tank clean.
      I have some ideas on aquascaping this big tank and will start buying more plants, rocks, and wood. I am in no hurry to switch everything over immediately.
      This will be my room divider between the kitchen dining room and the living-room so it will need to be open in all sides... with the narrow end close to the wall. This is where the filter will be located
      and will need the glass lid to be modified to accommodate the filter.
      I will get the TopFin Media.

    I basically fill mine all the way with water before plugging it in. I just wish Hagen would make them now with the pump inside the tank. And it definitely gets going quicker if you move the intake to the slower side. Also works better if your power goes out, when it comes back on, push the intake to the slower side and it will prime faster.

    Debating on getting this or the Fluval C4. Exactly how long is the intake tube when both are connected? I need a long intake filter to get all the debris and waste accumulating at the bottom of my tanks.

    • @DilettanteCulture
      @DilettanteCulture  5 років тому +1

      Each intake tube is 6 1/2". Plus the U shape intake piece sticks roughly 3 inches into the tank. You can buy extra intake tubes on amazon. It comes with 2, which reaches 2/3rds or more of the way into my 18" tank. The way they're made, you can cut a tube to be shorter to make it exactly how long you need it, if need to be. 3 intakes (so buying an extra for less than $5) would reach the bottom of a 18" tank and then some. The extra tubes are available here. amzn.to/2I5vMec

      Its not really needed, u only really need mechanical and biological filtration in a filter. Chemical filtration in a filter is only for certain situations like removing medications that you used on fish, clearing up brownish water caused by unprepared driftwood, and etc.

    what supplies would you recommend to replace the filter inside the aquaclear? I 'd love to purchase a bag of filters that I can cut rather than buy the boxed one that comes from aqua clear. I notice there are at least two. the white sponge and the thin filter. I currently use fluval 50

      I use the Aquaclear Sponges still. In The 110, I cut them in half (the long way, so I end up with like a sandwhich bred thing). I only use one of them, and I add 3 bags of cermic media. I use to use the Fluval Biomax (the stuff that comes with aquaclear, I just bought extra), but now I use the Top fin stuff from Petsmart (ua-cam.com/video/e4EdmAkyEEA/v-deo.html). For polishing, I just use a Top Fin polishing pad or basic PolyFil from walmart.

      I do think it would be to high. I used an AquaClear 70 on my 29.

    • @nabokovfan87
      @nabokovfan87 4 роки тому +1

      I run an AC70 in a 29g "river" setup. I had it setup for corycats, hillstream loaches, otos with high flow/cooler water tank. For a typical 29, you want just an AC50 for most fish. There isn't enough adjustment (something the seachem tidals do very well) to get the flow low enough if you need to. The added space is really nice on an AC70, but it just isn't practical with such a narrow depth tank. Even on my 55g, running 2 AC70s on low, it's ridiculous how much the substrate moves when it's below the waterfall line.

I just got a Seapora 75g, and if it wasn't for the 1/4inch lip on the inside of the rim the AC70 would have fit. I assume that lip is there for glass tops, but still really annoying and something vendors need to ask people when they are ordering their tanks.
      Does the AC110 fit?? I had concerns when I saw replacement intake tubes for the AC70 and 110 being the same size.

      Can’t really overkill on filtering IMO, however this filter is rated for 60-110 US gallons so you’ll likely be able to step down to the model below this one in terms of size and it’ll be plenty sufficient for filtering a 30 but depends on your level of livestock as well but I would say whatever the model below is (likely rated for 30-60 gallons) would be totally fine
