- Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by ex-footballer Joey Barton, former Sky Sports commentator and presenter Bianca Westwood, UA-camr Pearl Davis and host of 'The Offside Rule' podcast Kait Borsay for an open debate on some of Barton's recent tweets criticising the standard of female commentators in the men's game and how they seem to be getting the role on tokenism and not merit.
Joey believes that the standard of journalism has dropped in football commentary because many ex-professional female players are being allowed to commentate Premier League games without having the experience or merit to deserve covering those games. He also adds that the female's game is so different, that their experience cannot translate to the men's game.
Bianca responds by saying that many pundits are not great when they first start out, using Gary Neville as an example as someone whose first time properly commentating the game on Monday Night Football as lacking quality.
Kait then questions why we don't demand the same footballing experience from presenters such as Jake Humphrey, who have never played professional football.

Joey is saying what 99% of us are thinking, there was a reason soccer Saturday was the most watched and talked about show for 20 years, Phil Thompson Jeff sterling kammie George best mat letis , Paul merson , Rodney marsh Charlie Nichols and so on the chemistry, the knowledge all in different departments made this show amazing because they were the best people for the role..not just putting woman on to please people..I can’t even watch the program anymore and it’s the same as sky sports live matches, we had Andy gray Martin Tyler every Sunday Richard keys we experienced the best years of football ever 😢 and until people wake up to this is we will never experience a golden era like we had again

Was so looking forward to watching and hearing the commentary on the Liverpool v Fulham game after hearing of the excitement of the last few minutes. How bitterly disappointed I was to hear a woman commentating. I turned the TV off I could not listen to her cringey voice. Pure awful to listen to a woman commentating on the mens game.

If you watch football and listen to the commentary and the punditry, there are some terrible male pundits and Joey Barton has never raised any complaint about them. Exactly the point I made in my post, female presenters and commentators have just as much a place in any sport including mens football if they can ask the right questions and describe factually what is happening in an entertaining way. The role of the pundit is usually the professional insight from a player or manager, at this point woman can not talk with authority on mens football, neither can 99% of men who have never kicked a ball at the top level.

Not everybody can be a commentator, its a very skilled profession, and a bad commentator will ruin the coverage. This was known until recently when nowadays anybody seems to thrown on commentary.
Presenters as women, absolutely fine in fact some are better than men. The issue is commentary and punditry.
Absolutely, most of the Play by play and presenters are more like journalists. Word smiths. But co-com, who is bringing the analysis has to be well versed in the sport. If they aren't a men's pro, they need to have done thorough research. But too often you have a lady, who doesn't really watch men's football that much, doesn't know the players and teams well. And they are relying on their knowledge from their playing career. But the standard of play especially for a former women's player is like a 10th division player in England at best.

But what they *_didn't_* do was actually *_lose_* the argument, which was that football is the same game with the same rules (just like hockey, tennis or basketball), Barton's line of reasoning being *_"have you ever been tackled at full speed?"_* He lost the argument _right there_ all by himself. Of _course_ the majority in the comments section appear to be in support of him, which proves nothing other than most sane people have got better things to do with their time.
I watched a Joey Barton interview on another yt channel earlier (which brought me here) where you see Barton try to extrapolate beyond that *_central_* point made here, stringing together every prejudice he can, not one of them related _to_ it, including female commentators on other sports, trans-women in female power sports¹, anti-vax nonsense, _'anti-wokeness,'_ ...the whole Mat Le Tissier-style playbook. Everything, that is, *_except_* that central argument for which he has no coherent retort. And then he goes (in relation to female footy pros): *_"I'm better...stronger...faster"_* without irony...fantasising about pretending to be a trans woman and playing against women. I kid you not. The guy is _'troubled',_ shall we say.
[¹] NB: I personally think trans-women *who have been through male puberty* should *_not_* be competing in elite women's power sports. Probably the only thing we can agree on. The good news is that the main sports bodies are some distance from acquiescing to anything of the sort.
The women players have little idea of what it is to be a premiership footballer - what it takes. They're inherently less qualified as pundits and they are being hired BECAUSE they're women and the channels are hooked into DEI targets. Re: life game commentating - different to punditry and a different skill that doesn't necessarily require first-hand knowledge of the game at a high level. But it does require the right voice and I'm yet to hear a women's commentator with the right voice.

Joey is 100% right. If we are being brutally honest, decent level men’s Sunday league football is a higher standard than top-level women’s football and if we had Sunday league players analysing EPL games then viewers would quite rightly find it ridiculous!
If sport or football really was equal, there would not be Womens/Mens Tennis, Mens/Women Swimming, Mens/Womens Football. They are separated simply because of biology. There is no way Alex Scott would survive a full blown Roy Keane tackle. If the FA really believed in equality the men and women would be playing in the same team, but even they know that cannot be physically possible.

He might not be the best speaker, but they both let the other person complete their thoughts and don’t interrupt each other. It was actually pretty sane for a media interview. I think that he has some good points about tokenism, but it’s difficult to point out when most resumes are fluffed up to pander to identity politics or they might be canceled.
I'm against female commentary in football matches. Not because of gender, but because they're not witty or articulate like the season male commentary and they have high pitched voices which becomes grating. Funny thing is, I've watched tennis religiously from 2006 - 2021 roughly and half the commentary is done by women (even in the mens game), but they're all 45yrs+ old and have gravitas in their voice. Listen to Annabel Croft (Tennis) speak vice women in football. Different universe.

Joey certainly has a point. The mens game is being saturated more and more each year by female commentators, I am sure there are many men, just as, if not more qualified to fill these rolls but are being overlooked to fill quotas and I'm sure they would love a chance to do these jobs. On another point, the Womens game in England is has the most biased TV coverage I have seen anywhere. They cherry pick the the games from the top 4 sides every week, Arsenal, Chelsea, City and United, this deliberately falsifies the standards of the WSL. Often on the womens WSL show we see a panel of all females but it appears they (Sky) increasingly squeeze a female ex footballer or commentator into coverage of a PL game. I have a Mother, a Sister and a Daughter and I adore all of them and want nothing but the best for them, this isn't about sexism it's about fairness.
What are the attendance figures for the womens game?
How can they be more qualified than the men when they lose heavily to 14/15 year olds.

You can easily say that your opinion doesn't matter as you've never played professional football, and Joey might say the same thing. And a pro who's been much more successful than Joey might say he shouldn't be commenting on top players in top teams. It's just his opinion at the end of the day as it is any of ours. And I'm sure female pro's know a lot more about the technicalities of football than you and I.
Only issue is, by the same token, why should Ian Wright be allowed to speak on the women's game? I just think Barton's heard one bad commentator and now bases his opinion off that as if Jermaine Jenas isn't one of the worst commentators out there
