    Such great books. They'd fly off my display tables out here in Brooklyn. The Black Panther, rare Malcolm X, Newton, Hampton etc, they're still in high demand. Good haul.

    Looking sharp! Best be careful, you might be distracting those customers on opening day... 😉
    At this rate, you might need a Corner of Controversy as it looks like you're building quite the collection.

      @@thebookpeddler I’ve seen your cabinet as it briefly appears on your mini tours, I just meant you might be needing more space. In honesty, I think I’d be one of those people that would find a lot of the content uncomfortable. Having watched you a while now though, I think I’m starting to understand it’s not so much about whether or not you agree with the content and more about not agreeing with censorship.

      Yeah it's more so historical books and ephemera, cultural/societal reactionary movements. I just believe it's my duty to preserve and share it. The suppression of these ideas in my opinion is not healthy for society, when a discussion and questions are not allowed and people are not being listened to I think it can produce extremists, which doesn't have to be the case. Right now in the US there is a lot of selective reinforcement going on and every year new policies come to the forefront that try to regulate expression of ideas and speech and behavior, painting in large broad brushstrokes and labeling people as hateful/rascist etc. It's become almost in fashion that if someone doesn't agree with a government policy then they must be "anti-government" or if someone doesn't believe in illegal immigration then they must be rascist towards that populace as a whole. Very aggressive language is used towards people with differing beliefs from the status quo, it's very devisive and is creating deep divisions. It's very slippery slope and very unhealthy. Just my quick two cents.

    • @KellyAnotherAdventure
      @KellyAnotherAdventure 7 місяців тому

      @@thebookpeddler definitely a difficult subject and one I'm no expert on. I get what you're saying and I don't have an issue with freedom of expression but expressing concerns in broad terms is one thing, actually being racist/misogynistic/xenophobic/homophobic, etc etc and allowing those values to slip into policymaking is something else.
      When we were studying history in school, our teacher told us we learn history so we don't repeat it. You study ideologies, events, people, learn some critical thinking, etc so you recognise those patterns, especially if someone tries to use fear and/or ignorance to suit their own agenda(s). So it makes sense to read those books and hold onto that material, particularly in terms of preserving that history and for educational purposes.
      But, over the last few years especially, I can't help but see all these targeted campaigns against vulnerable groups as deeply concerning not just for those groups now but what this means for all of us going forwards. Like here in the UK there's been this slide towards 'the right' and it is something I think we should be mindful of. I think it's more that people have been sick of feeling stuck and that nothing has changed so they go more and more extreme just to see something change. Some politicians here picked up on that and are now using immigration, gender debates, etc as campaign pillars because it's a quick and easy way to drum up some support and I hate it. As an example, we recently had legislation pushed through that basically said secure, single-compartment toilets (with wash facilities, etc in the cubicle) weren't good enough, non-domestic buildings also needed specific men and women designations too. It's bonkers. I don't need a dress icon on a door to feel safe from men. And I certainly have never been afraid of trans women or had issues with trans women. Whenever I've been unsafe, or know of someone who's been attacked, it's been a man. Not a man wearing a dress in an attempt to gain access to a gendered toilet (?!). Well... that was quite the rant...
      Also, with immigration in particular, we saw so much of that fear marketing and lies during campaigns for Brexit and the Conservatives are more than happy to keep stirring that pot. They've now created this system that makes it very hard for someone to stay or come here legally, then complain that we have so many labour shortages (especially in construction and healthcare). Now there's this attempt to send asylum seekers off to places like Rwanda! This place is a shitshow.

      @@KellyAnotherAdventure It's tough to try and have an extensive dialogue about things like this through a comment section but I'll try my hand to be concise in a response.
      The reason I believe a strong movement to the right so to say at least in the States is taking place is a reaction to a lot of left leaning policies that are having a detrimental effect on the economy and pretty much all classes within society currently. The thing is... people who are becoming more "hardened" to the "right" so to say I believe are in fact being led astray, most Republican politicians here countinue and expanded upon current destructive policy, to me they're wolves in sheeps clothing and no different than many of the Democrats, in the end, no type of resolution is ever taking place. As you can tell, I'm sure, I don't believe in collectivism/socialism/leftist ideology etc. I just want my constitution and bill of rights and I don't believe the Republicans are the savoirs either. Both parties seem to be the wings on the same bird of prey. This country is so far removed from what it used to be and the foundation that it was built on, unfortunately I don't believe it can ever revert back. Both sides are warhungry and psychopathic in my opinion.
      When it comes to fear mongering, I see it heavily with both sides and I refuse to buy into it. Most people want to be left alone and be free to live their life as they see fit. Most people that I know don't care about skin color or sexual oreintation, however when the governing body tries to forcefully make people accept something that most don't believe and start to propagandize the children of those people as well, then you can expect a reaction, currently that's what's happening in this country and now you're having people who once were very tolerant becoming less so.
      My beef is not with the illegals, the transexuals etc. It's with a forcefull intolerant government that continues to try and regulate society culturally, socially, economically etc. And it's creating a powder keg.
      I have people of all different orientations come to my shop and have worked with many different people throughout the years. In my own family there are splits politically BUT in my family we understand that family is above all of this and I try to relay that over to the local community as well, we may have our differences but we do care about each other and that in my opinion trumps whatever stranger with a title in government has to say because it's clear to me that they don't have our best interests in my mind and continue to sow seeds of division where there weren't any before.
      I'm typing on my phone so can't look back at your comment in full but was trying to touch on what you said in relation to the UK and what's been going on here.
      I appreciate your thoughtfull comment though, hope what I said makes sense, again tough to detail and clarify appropriately beefy topics within such a small space!

      @@MrMfaust5 most likely... it gets crazier every year, such a shame. Information and material used to be readily accessible online, much has disappeared down a black hole or has been heavily suppressed. "Back in the day" when I used to be researching "non-manstream info" so to say, I started printing out articles, full books, court cases etc. so I had hard copies as well as saving them to drives, I always had a feeling that there was no way any governing body could allow a free flow of information that the masses had access to that challenged the status quo. I've been asked by a number of booksellers to do a video surrounding this topic and I may someday it's just a lot of work to properly encapsulate the issues and not fully turn people off from it either. Anyhow thanks for the comment!

    Do you go through every page when you list online? I always go through every page and take photos if there’s some sort of markings from the previous owner. Or how many times have you gone through a really nice book and it has a bunch of writing or stains. Do you throw away or take photos? Been happening a lot to me. Thanks! Great finds!

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  7 місяців тому +1

      I breeze through them quickly and can generally tell, if I find something I go back and go a little slower. With the higher end books I'm more diligent and with buying a higher end book I'm very diligent to make sure all the pages are there and any maps etc. Associated with the book are present. In terms of trashing the book it really depends on the value, a higher end book with major condition issues I just drastically reduce the price and it will still sell, a lower end one gets canned. Usually professors notate a lot of their books, so there's certain people you buy off of where it'll be more likely prevelant than others.

      For me it's been handling the material over and over again, seeing the names over and over again. I took Colonialism and Revolutionary War classes in college, initially I had wanted to teach, so I handled a lot of primary source and secondary source material, that played a role in grounding me in the field a bit and recognizing the names that wrote during the period and afterwards and desireable works that historians and collectors want in their collection. I look through book dealer catalogues as well which has helped some. It's never ending learning which is part of the fun, you'll start to recognize aspects and content of books in the era that are appealing to the collector base and be able to gauge to a degree the value. Not to say I know it all by any means but I think pattern recognition kicks in through the constant handling of material and research and you just know you should go in on a buy, it becomes a bit instinctual. Check out other book dealer websites that specialize in the interests you have that may help as well. Become a sponge, soak in all the info you can. Nothing in my opinion is quick and it's a never ending process, not many shortcuts to it just keep handling the material and keeping a pulse on the market the best you can.
