Looks awesome Stonehenge and rollright stone! Great to know lots information about them. Very interesting to watch 😍👍👍Thank you for wonderful sharing, greeting from Color&Shawn 🤗🤗
I loved your telling of the Rollright Stones legend, Dara. Beautifully narrated. I really appreciated the captivating pictures that accompanied it too 👏👏
I agree the 5 reasons you mentioned are clearly in favour of Rollright!!! The most important to me is it not being as touristy as Stonehenge. I hate being among a mass of tourists. So I definitely would prefer to visit Rollright. And anyhow, I already visited Stonehenge 40 years ago and as I suppose the stones did not move there, there is no need to visit it once again.🤣
As a Cotswolds tour guide I definitely love the Rollright Stones! Stonehenge is actually free if you're a member of English Heritage or the National Trust (well, I mean included in your membership and you don't have to pay more). I'm visiting for the first time next week (I have been before, but parked on the roadside and peeked through the fence... I don't think you can do that anymore!)
Are you Lisa Go Cotswolds? Since I'm not on Facebook anymore, I miss everybody's posts... I'm surprised you have never been to Stonehenge officially! Yes, they have massively changed the set up of how you park and visit the site now. It's actually quite a hassle. But you make a good point about the fees. I do agree it's a good idea to get an English heritage membership or national trust if you're going to be in Britain a while, and then plan several places you can visit to take advantage of the membership! Last year we did that, and also joined Historic Houses. Big fun! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers! Dara
Something of a pet peeve with me when people ask what are 'must see' locations. Travel gurus usually just list the most well known and often crowded destinations, the rise of the instagram travel influencer with the pretty pictures increased this 'check list' type of tourism. 'Visit the UK, here's your list, check off each location'. But the real fun of travel is actually discovering places that generally aren't on any lists, you just create your own list. It's one of the main reason why I enjoy watching travel videos from so called 'smaller' youtubers as I've learnt about so many interesting places in the world I had never heard of. This video is a great example, I've never heard of the Rollright Stones and the site looks fascinating.
We are definitely on the same wavelength! I agree that it's no fun to go to a country and only visit the most popular places! They are usually crowded, expensive, and stressful. Much more fun to discover hidden gems... like this place 😉Cheers! Dara

We did enjoy the visit. Your know we have some ancient stones here in the States too. Just didn't lift the tons of weight and set them on their side! Other than Scotty at Coral Castle in Florida. That was an old hermit who loved the "Stonehenge" stories and thought he'd duplicate the probable means of construction. By himself and only at night. The winches were hidden from view. Amazing place if your ever in southern Florida.

@@MagentaOtterTravels Thanks Dara! I'm okay. Three reasons for lack of videos. 1. Slacker (that never goes away 😂). 2. I had some really minor surgery a 3 or 4 weeks ago so have been in recovery mode. 3. We had an Easter break for 10 days and went on a (painful - see point 2) road trip. 4. Great video Dara, i do agree with you, there is so much more beauty in the UK in different areas, not just the overpriced tourist site! Although, wood henge just down from Stonehenge is actually really interesting and gives great food for thought - Would definitely like to experience visiting the Rollright Stones looks lovely and has a really unique past! Thanks for this one!
Dara. Another great video. I agree with you. I’ve lived in the UK for 70 plus years. I’ve driven past it a few times and never felt the need to stop. Never knew the cost but there's always seem to be too many people there and some years ago the stones have been fenced off to keep from vandalism and graffiti. I prefer Avebury as well. In Wales we have some ancient Cromlech’s which marked very ancient graves of usually a prominent chief or prince. A Cromlech usually consist of two tall upright stones and a large bridging stone across the top. Quite a few in Pembrokeshire.
Well, Dara, your Rollright Stones story is much more compelling than a distant fleeting view of Stonehenge from the A303! Sounds like a must-visit. (Long before the M4 motorway was built, I used to spend a day driving to Bristol via the A303 and stop for a rest in the layby near the then free subway entrance to Stonehenge. Can't recall many visitors then! How times have changed! Here's hoping the Rollright Stones retain their secluded peace and quiet.)
Haven’t been to Stonehenge since i was a nipper. £26? Yikes. Rollrights? Haven’t heard of these. £1? Can get down with that! The plaques look informative and well maintained. Kings and Witches? If you’re ever by Stonehenge again you should visit Woodhenge, only a few minutes away. Woodhenge is probably slightly older than Stonehenge but not much to see comparatively, as there are now wooden markers to show where the original tall wooden posts were.
Does it really cost 26 quid just to look at Stonehenge? Madness, as you say you can see them from the road anyway! I like the way you pick up on Cotswold landscapes that are a bit off the beaten track and can often be enjoyed with zero crowds. I also like Avebury a lot and am just waiting for a decent day to go down there for a walk I like that does a 7 mile circuit from there, past Silbury Hill. I also like The White Horse, Wayland's Smithy and Uffington Castle, have you been there Dara?
I've never heard of the Rollright stones. Love Avebury though (about 30mins drive from us). There is another little known free henge, just around the corner from Stonehenge ... Woodhenge! (Yes really) Historically this was made of wooden tree trunks, but now it's more "Concrete Bollard Henge". That said, they are about the right height to sit on and there were some quite nice views because it's on a hillside.
Thanks for the suggestion! A couple other viewers mentioned Woodhenge, so we will need to check that out when we are in the area. But yes, Avebury was SO fun to visit! Loved it! Hopefully I'll get THAT video done in May ;-) Fingers crossed! Cheers! Dara

I must apologise for our ancestors. They left stuff like this lying around all over the place - very untidy. Seriously, there's some awesome archaeology in Britain. The Rollrights have a lovely atmosphere.
It's a bit like London, Americans always have to go to London. If someone asked me (I might be a bit biased 😂) I'd say they'd be better visiting York. Lots of historic sites and sights, it even has a river running through it with boat tours available during the main tourist season, and everything is a lot cheaper than London.
I agree completely! People are always going to go to London, and in fact most of us have to fly thru London... but it's best to only stay briefly and then explore some things further out. Like York!
I confess I had never heard of the Rollright Stones. They look well worth a visit, enough to forgive you for the witchy trick you pulled to get us there.😂
Totally agree. The powers have wrecked Stone Henge as a place to visit. Over priced just to get a bit closer . With a tacky visitors centre and silly parking area. 40 years ago it was much more wild and a truely atmospheric place
Am I the first to disagree with this. It’s like saying don’t go to Buckingham Palace try Kensington Palace it’s less busy. If you’d said go to Avebury instead then it would be difficult to disagree. I seem to remember reading the henge is actually free your paying for parking and transport. Also you can stand in the stone circles on the soloists most who visit then don’t pay they park elsewhere and walk to the stones. I should go to the Rollrights sometime it’s somewhere we’d both want to do (Teresa). M&T
Feel free to disagree with me! I just like taking the Mick out of Stonehenge... and to be fair, I did say in the video that Avebury is better than the Rollrights. Honestly, I was just trying an experiment to see if a Clickbait thumbnail would work. It didn't, so lesson learnt 🤣🤣🤣
You didn't bump into any Doctor Who fans at the Rollright Stones? The stones are actually the Ogri. Aliens from the planet Ogros. Viviae Fay(Cessair) was turned into one of the stones by the Megara. The reason you can't count the stones is because they move. 😈😈
@@MagentaOtterTravels Have you been to Aldbourne, Wiltshire? There's a pub there sometimes known as The Cloven Hoof. 😁 You could try out their Chilli Cheese Nachos while mentioning that they spell chilli with two Ls. There's also a bronze age barrow very close by, known as The Devils Hump.
Yes, Stonehenge was voted the most disappointing attraction in England, a tourist trap, a time heavy round trip, yet visitors overlook adjacent Salisbury and cathedral, American ex pat Bill Bryson wrote so well of Salisbury.
Excellent point!!! Salisbury is way more worth the time. My brother that I visited last week described Stonehenge as a place that should take 15 minutes to visit, but with the new setup it now requires 3 hours to visit!
@@MagentaOtterTravels if you like old stuff in Salisbury, then old Sarum is a great place, when I was there it was deserted…you don’t sense history in a queue for a turnstile and a payment kiosk..
@@MagentaOtterTravelsI’ll take the 30 free seconds view drive by on the A road .I did read somewhere that they were going to put the drive by road into a tunnel..maybe that would force people into an expensive 3 hour dine and travelator session..
Depends on when you go. £26.30 on peak dates. They don't mention how much they charge for parking, so probably enough to make your eyes water. Want to see the summer solstice? You can't. It's closed on that day.
How can anyone not be impressed by Stonehenge? It's not just a pile of stones, look at the skill of building it, look at the uprights and lintels. The Bluestones were brought from the Preseli hills in Pembrokeshire, many miles away. Why? Also, look at it's alignment with the heel stone and the solstices. Now tell me it's boring.
@@MagentaOtterTravels I visited a few years ago in January so it wasn't crowded, I got in free on my NT and CADW card. How can't you be impressed by the stones and lintels and the fact that the Bluestones were brought from the Preseli hills in South Wales, many miles away or why the heel stones were aligned with the solstices? Don't you find the history fascinating and what the beliefs of the builders were? Don't forget how old it is.
@@jillhobson6128 I do think that history is amazing! I just think that the current set up makes things over priced and inconvenient. It's like saying London isn't worth visiting. Of course it is! But if it's the ONLY thing you see in England, you missed out on an awful lot!!!

Historically this was made of wooden tree trunks, but now it's more "Concrete Bollard Henge".
Cheers! Dara
Ah yes very nicely done Dara. You could have done with someone with a Gloucestershire accent to narrate for you for authenticity 🤣🤷🏻♂️. These are on our huge list of places to visit. Thank you for showing them to us.
Hope you and Ian are both well. Catch you soo. 👍🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♂️
Ah yes, I'm no good at impersonating a Glos accent I'm afraid! LOL
Sorry for my super late response... we have been gone for a week and a half and I didn't touch my computer or keep up with my UA-cam on my phone. Too much going on! Thanks for watching and I'll see you soon ;-) Cheers! Dara
I’m in the uk now. Not far from cheltenham . But staying near Brighton
How fun! How long are you there? Sorry that we aren't there to say hello!
@@MagentaOtterTravels 17th. Attending Goodwood members meeting to get my car guy fill. Sunday was spent driving on strong side, in downtown London, Ted lasso pub, and Diddly square farm. Cheers!
@@NewCastleIndiana sounds like fun! Except for going to diddly squat... did you enjoy it?
I still haven't seen the latest season of Ted Lasso. Funny show! Safe travels! Cheers! Dara
The brits on a day out in Wiltshire go to places like Caen Locks …or check out a Barrow.
Like a long barrow? Did you see my Belas Knap video? ua-cam.com/video/GVEC6ngKU3Q/v-deo.html
I must apologise for our ancestors. They left stuff like this lying around all over the place - very untidy. Seriously, there's some awesome archaeology in Britain. The Rollrights have a lovely atmosphere.
I guess we can forgive them for being untidy, because those rocks are pretty massive! I wouldn't want to have to tidy them up! Lol
Like York!
Watching a live Q&A where they're talking about Stonehenge. 😲
Coincidence? I think not! The witch made it happen! 🧙♀️
Great video…you are well on the way to being eccentric enough to be a honorary Brit
Heehee 😉 cheers mate!
Uncrowded and non-touristy are the way we like it!
Indeed!
Great reciting of the history! 😂
Ha ha, I'm glad you enjoyed my witchy voice 🧙♀️
That's the best way to see a monument when no one else is there
I agree! Especially when it has magical mystical stories...
I confess I had never heard of the Rollright Stones. They look well worth a visit, enough to forgive you for the witchy trick you pulled to get us there.😂
Bwahahahaha! Read that and hear my best witchy cackle ;-)
i you back in uk now
Soon! Watch tomorrow's video to get the scoop 😉
Wow, Stonehenge is expensive. You can have a free view of it in your car as you drive past, lol!
I know, right? I'm #frugal
stonhenge the feet too the easter island heads
It does have a very interesting history!
Totally agree.
The powers have wrecked Stone Henge as a place to visit.
Over priced just to get a bit closer .
With a tacky visitors centre and silly parking area.
40 years ago it was much more wild and a truely atmospheric place
Yes, absolutely! They have taken a lovely place that you can easily see in 15 minutes and have now forced you to spend three hours visiting it!🙄
Am I the first to disagree with this.
Haha, not this time!
@@MagentaOtterTravels The stones feed on blood btw. 😈
@@MagentaOtterTravels Have you been to Aldbourne, Wiltshire? There's a pub there sometimes known as The Cloven Hoof. 😁
You could try out their Chilli Cheese Nachos while mentioning that they spell chilli with two Ls.
There's also a bronze age barrow very close by, known as The Devils Hump.
@@Poliss95 I have not! You know I can't eat chili with two L's nor can I eat nachos in Britain
@@MagentaOtterTravels You've been to more Doctor Who and Time Team filming locations than I have I'm green with envy. 🤢😁
I with you on Stonehenge .Overpriced and overrated .At one time you could wounder around the stones ,no fences .
Yep that's how it was when I first saw them in 1985
Then the niche was spotted to cash in…and they’ve never looked back..
@@MagentaOtterTravels if you like old stuff in Salisbury,
then old Sarum is a great place, when I was there it was deserted…you don’t sense history in a queue for a turnstile and a payment kiosk..
@@MagentaOtterTravelsI’ll take the 30 free seconds view drive by
on the A road .I did read somewhere that they were going to put the drive by road into a tunnel..maybe that would force people into an expensive 3 hour dine and travelator session..
I was surprized that you knew that Stonehenge was a stone circle and not a henge, as most people think because of its name.
Don't give me any credit! I don't even know what it henge is! 😬🙄🤣
@@MagentaOtterTravels a henge has an earthworks around it, where as a stone circle doesn't.
@@jeanlongsden1696 oh, good to know! Thanks for clarifying
£26…..i assume that is the 2022 price. I wonder how expensive the ‘23 price will be…
How much is it to park your car?
Depends on when you go. £26.30 on peak dates. They don't mention how much they charge for parking, so probably enough to make your eyes water. Want to see the summer solstice? You can't. It's closed on that day.
I don't know... but I bet it's steep!
@@MagentaOtterTravels it costs a lot to visit the Rolling Stones….every car park in the uk is fast going down the smart app tube..
@@griswald7156 Rolling Stones? Autocorrect? 😁

It's not boring but expectations are raised too high so the reality tends to disappoint.
It is very interesting. But also overrated and overpriced and overcrowded in my humble opinion.
I Guess this isn't aimed at the Druids 😅
I hope no druids took offence...
I've been past Stonhenge hundreds of times on the A303 and can't see what all the fuss is about, not really into the Stones, more of a Beatles man 😉
