Half a Roque
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: Arnold Belgard
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 27 January 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Slim Pickens makes his first appearance as the rogueish but lovable mountaineer Jim Leyton. Wounded while busting out of jail, Jim tries to steal Hoss Cartwright's horse for a quick getaway, then passes out from his injuries. When he comes to, Jim tries to beat his murder rap by claiming that Hoss was the guilty party. It may be, however, that neither man is guilty of the crime-but it is up to Hoss to prove it, and to look after the troubelsome Jim, whose has been paroled in Hoss' custody. Bing Russell, who later appeared semiregularly in the role of Deputy Clem, here plays the Sheriff. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"Slim Pickens dominates this episode as a vurly brawling mixed race mountain man who is hired as a guide abd hen accused of murdering the man who hired him.
John Milford and his attorney Judson Pratt are the accusersa and Pickens with a broken leg has refuge at the Ponderosa and especially with Dan Blocker.
Turns out that Pickens and and Hoss Cartwright are one evenly matched par. There scenes together are special and really make this episode.
Although it's rather obvious who the murderer is, the episode is still great fun because of Slim Pickens and Dan Blocker." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Man, Slim Pickins has got to be the most unrecognized, underrated actors, who should be in the Acting Hall of Fame; if there is such a thing.......... so many, many shows, so many many movies he was in !!!!
A winning rodeo horseman where he won his awards.
Yeah he played a Sheriff in another episode of Bonanza !
Absolutely, however once you've heard his voice and seen him act you'll always recognize him. An uncommon voice! As a youngster I knew of him from tv 1974 Kung Fu, Grizzly Adams, How the West Was Won, & B.J. and the Bear, and a movie The Apple Dumpling Gang in 75.
Great fight between guys who respected each other. 10/10
Ugh, I love Hoss. Dan Blocker was such a wholesome person ❤
The lead in music with Hoss riding in, is always used when a fun episode is coming on. It is upbeat, and happy.
It's referred to as "Hoss's theme". There's many variations of it used in Bonanza, but only for "Hoss" episodes, and only for the more light-hearted ones. Whenever I hear Hoss's theme, I know it's going to be a good episode.
I wish that there were more people like the Cartwrights around today... I'd sure like to meet them!
I couldnt agree more
DAN BLOCKER AND SLIM PICKENS DID SOME GREAT FIGHT SCENES TOGETHER AND ALSO PLAYED IN ANOTHER EPISODE WHERE SLIM WAS INVITING HOSS TO BE BEST MAN AT HIS WEDDING. GREAT SHOW. GOD BLESS THEM BOTH FOR THEIR TALENT.
AMEN!!!! EDDIE MORIN
With fight and stunt arrangers - yes.
It's apparent Slim Pickens and Dan Blocker became friends here.
I saw that episode also and I enjoyed it immensely. It was so funny!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😅😅😅🥰🥰🥰
Slim Pickens was a great actor with an unmistakable voice. No wonder he was in demand as a character actor.
Yes. Even here Australia he was very well liked. He's one of a rare breed.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
He's great in Blazing Saddles
Unmistakable voice indeed. I did not know he was going to be in this episode but as soon as I heard him speak, I knew immediately who it was.
Also a winning rodeo horseman.
@@suev3339 A top American rodeo champion, wnich led him into the world of Westerns.
Thanks for sharing this episode. Slim Pickens was great!
Classic Western Show: ua-cam.com/video/TipnKbK_ffs/v-deo.html
That episode was pure joy! Excellent writing played beautifully by Jim & Hoss.
When I was a child and I was ill I used to tell my mom that I wanted to go to the Ponderosa house,Hoss would take care of me. All family wore so kind to everyone, why not to me?Just remembering those times. Was such a great episode. Thank you.
That was one of the sweetest comments Ive ever read.....
Enjoyed thoroughly. Hoss, the man with a heart of gold!
The comment that guy made, reminded me of an episode I would love to see again.Charles Bronson was guest star, playing a half breed. He got friendly with Joe & in one conversation he said "You see Joe,when you're half of something, you're really half of nothing".Sad comment. But be a great episode to see again. And the circus one where the girl said "Well Little Joe,do you think you would like to try the trapeze?"His answer being "Oh no,not me.I have enough trouble getting up on the horses around here".Funny,I can remember that. But as to finding out where I put a card yesterday....!
Should be pretty easy to find the links for those episodes.
Underdog - episode 180 (Charles Bronson)
Slim Pickens makes every Western Cowboy movie or show ten times better, well two times with Bonanza.
Awesome entertainment. Something the whole family can watch. A LOST ART.
No kidding! Slim Pickens was a fantastic guest on the show.
Excellent episode!, Jim played a fabulous character!!
Thanks for watching! Check out this film as well if you haven't already: ua-cam.com/video/gK8x3S46lLk/v-deo.html
@@GrjngoWesternSeries Thanks! I haven't seen it! cheers man
Hoss taking in another "stray." His character had a great, good natured, likable heart.
When Men were Men. When your word meant something. Those were the days!
Hoss is just a big old loving big bear, everyone loves him, thank you for the memories DAN u are the best of the bonanza series shows. a true real hearted man for all seasons. just let your kids watch this show they learn how to love and give love to others, I would had loved to live on such a ranch in 1865
I don't love him he was ok I liked him better then Joe but not better then Adam and Ben
Hop Sing was a grovelling little yes man, who would wipe your backside if you asked him.
He’s gullible, that’s why they get into so much trouble being so kind hearted.
@Jack Sugden No Hop Sing wasn't. He yelled at three sons if they were late to dinner and the food was getting cold. And he was willing to risk going prison to marry that woman he fell in love with, back when interracial marriage was illegal.
He loved the Cartwrights, and was Ben's employee, but he'd speak up for himself (and for others, like that woman) when he needed to.
@@jacksugden8190 it sounds like you haven't even watched the show if you have that opinion of Hop sing. He would even argue with Hoss when they didn't agree on something 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🍑🍉
Once again, Dan Blocker's Hoss is the heart and soul of Bonanza, always compassionate, humane and fair. Nicely scripted, acted and directed. Many thanks!
Always loved his character.
I knew it! Dan Blocker's hoss was the star of the show. It had to be to carry so much of his weight. Poor hoss. 🐴
I feel exactly the same lol He has always been my favorite on Bonanza, growing up as a little girl and now as a 57yr old. Big ole teddy bear!
Agreed
I never quite thought of it that way, but you are right. And no one else could have played that role.
I can watch these full episodes till the cows come a walkin home.
Has to be one of my favorite bonanza episodes. Really show quality.
Always excellent guest stars and always a moral to the story.
Hollyweird could sure take note from these fine gems.
A good episode? Hoss , tough sweet good man. Dan B. had so much talent. No one else could play that part like Dan B. Slim P. great actor.
Anything with the great Slim Pickens in it is outstanding! 😊 - ❤
Hoss is always helping people in trouble 👍👌😍🥰😘⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Pardner, this is a man's man episode, back when a man was a man...
It would be wonderful if every one that watches this show would act like this family.
great comment, but I think that the ones who watch it, might be very close....The ones who wouldnt watch it..they are the ones who make life hard
I wish I could visit Ponderosa and enjoy d hospitality and the kindness of the Cartwright family. It's just a dream 😴💭🙏😁💝
I agree. I know most people would say this is just fantasy, but I grew up with people from that generation, and I know for a fact they were far more friendly than people are today. They went out of their way to be kind
@@brucejackson6451 you are so lucky 👍😇
Well… I agree… we could start by being that way ourselves! 😊
@@mellyanawiguna8860 still people like that in the Carolinas and southern Virginia.I Lived there and the people were friendly, helpful, and kind to me from the day I arrived and I was an outsider from up north.
Make your own home “a ponderosa”!🤗It is all in the desire, God will do the rest! “ All things are possible to him that believeth”. The Spirit is still alive in hearts now as He was then. 🙏🙏❤️
Hoss not giving up his horse without a fight has big heart
Slim Pickens is one of my favorite actors.
I'd love to know who arranged their fight scenes. Having spent my acting career doing all my own action sequences, I've rarely seen fights where the 'delivery' and reaction to the hits looked so convincing. Comedy, pathos, drama; top quality family entertainment on every level, Bonanza nights were 'sacred', no-one went out. What a pity they can't write shows like this these days.
Your right about the "top quality, but wrong about "they can't write shows like this". They could, but now-a-days for some unknown reason, they let the Devil in and went to going in the opposite direction. Back then, men were men, not deciding if they wanted to be!
@@roostercogburn3771 Right on.Can hear The Duke agreeing with u too.
I agree. I'm relatively new to Bonanza and I've been binge-watching ever since I watched my first episode. The series came out before I was born, but true quality is timeless. And Hollywood doesn't make quality these days.
Yes! Great fight Choreography!
Absolutely fantastic. So funny I almost p..d my pants. Just the thing to get me through one more day of lockdown.
The humour ran in their family, he had a younger brother whose stage name was Easy Pickens
Great episode. It seems to me in season 4 Hoss got more lead roles than in the previous seasons. He is my favorite. And Slim was awesome.
I absolutely *LOVE* Hoss.He always makes me smile and laugh. When he broke that bed, I laughed my butt off.
That was awesome. Watched it 3 times. Sure wish I could have met those two. Ole Dan and slim. Men with real grit and true compassion. Quite a combo.
This a funny epsiode from Bonanza for the folks who love to watch the TV Classic Western Shows.
This is by far top 5 bonanza episode FINALLY something realistic, Shane style, I love just about all the episodes ever made but sometimes they are just to damn corny, but we all still watch don't we? Happy trails folks
Another good western well played by all Hoss is a very good man and slim Pickens
I am watching Bonanza from 1964 and it is a very nice cowboy 🤠 movie 🎥 and, I still watch it everyday when I have the time.
Sometimes fighting makes friendship become closer. Another nice episode of bonanza!
Every single time I feel the same way: how could anyone spend a better 5o minutes than watching these great episodes which once captured the heart of Americans! I wonder (if anyone knows the answer), did any of these episodes ever make i t to Britain? I sure hope so - I was our finest hour in early TV!
It got here! I remember watching it when I was a child but It started 1 month before I was born so I only remember it from the 7th season when there was only the 3 Cartwrights, so glad to now be watching it from the beginning as Pernell's portrayal of Adam made the show amazing! RIP Pernell!
I remember watching Bonanza as a kid here in Australia but by that time they were all repeats. So if they showed them here I'm sure they would have been shown over in Britain.
It was VERY popular in Spain, in the 70s but unfortunately was in Spanish...I didnt like it then...LOVE it now
Used to watch these on Sunday evenings with my grandparents. always loved the ones with Hop Sing in them. Hoss was always my favorite too. Wish families were still like this.
Hey, you got muscles in your head!🤔
Wonderful, wonderful episode. You can tell from the intro music there would be laughter. And laugh I did. Thank you.
Excellent show 👍❤️😇...God bless America 🇺🇸💖
My absolute favourite show when I was a kid. So glad to see it again!
Happy to hear that, there are plenty more episodes to come! 🤠✌🍿🎬

Hi You....And it's mine, now
I love Bonanza and can watch some episodes over and over and still enjoy them. Those were the days of great television when you could connect to the characters, and families could sit down and watch together. Thanks Grjngo for putting these together and allowing me and so many others to enjoy them. Really appreciated!
Haystack Calhoun & Hoss Cartright
What a pair they are.
Loved this episode & thanks for the share💯🖒
Hard earned friendship!!!!!
I LOVE THIS SHOW
The show is helping me alot
One of the funniest episodes Grjngo. Look at Hawmp's face and facial expressions throughout the fight. Hilarity ensues.
Hoss cutting his eyes to the side& that steely star.
Love the Hoss episodes.
When I first saw this I just plain cracked up thru whole show ribs hurt but fun 🤩 very good show!
They dont make shows like this anymore
I love this episode with Slim! LOL
👍👌👏 Great cast, great story. Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing this old series.
Best regards luck and health.
boy, dan blocker must have really been strong. unless he had some hidden help, he tossed slim pickens on him like a rag doll.
Lovely story, smart planning’s,
That was one heck of a fight
A Classic. Always loved Slim Pickens. Thank you.
Still love the movie hoss made where he was a blacksmith
Dan Blocker starred in two movies where he played a blacksmith. He also played a blacksmith in other TV parts before he got cast on Bonanza. I guess he fit the part of a blacksmith because of his physique.
Slim is such a great actor. thanks
Happy to hear that, thanks for watching! 🤠👌🎬🍿
There is no better Bonanza them one than includes that Wily rascal!!
This was a great episode!
In real life, Slim Pickens would not have had a prayer in a fight against Dan Blocker.
One of my favorite episodes.
Hapyp to hear that, thanks for watching! 🤠👌🎬🍿
Bonanza steps up another level with the casting of the legend, Slim Pickens. Wonderful stuff. Many thanks for posting 🙏🏻
.[“Send a wire to the Governor and tell him I said....Ouch!”.]
Thank you again for another great episode!👍🤠
Our pleasure! Thank you again for watching! 🤠👌🎬
Dan Blocker was originally considered to play Slim Pickens' iconic role in Dr Strangelove.
Hoss is just way too nice.
Bonanza is real school in all days in arts. I like it
Another reason why Hoss Cartwright is compassionate & teach his Female Bellydancer Queen 👑 Cassandra Fox, on how to do the same with the help of his Pa Benjamin Cartwright & the other Female Bellydancer Queen 👑 Isabella Sampourni.❤❤❤❤
The very best slim and hoss R.I.P BIG GUYS
What a fight! Amazing they had any teeth left to eat with after a fight like that!😂😂😂
I never saw any originals, but this was rather Funny
First time I saw this one and instantly one of my favorites!
So we have "bull of the woods" and " king of the mountains".... little Joe you're up 😂😂
Slim Pickens 😜👍
Good episode!
Why doesn't anyone ever finish their coffee...
What happened to the coffee pot that Hoss kicked over during the fight? lol
That was good! Lol
I really like this one!
Slim Pickens will always be Maj. 'King' Kong from Dr. Stranglove
Slim Pickens is quite a character...............
What's a western without Slim Pickens (or Gabby Hayes).
Another gr8 Episode
Great episode!
slim pickins I never seen this one
Slim Pickens was excellent
It's funny how when slim fell down the stairs and made all that noise only Hoss heard it and came rushing down you think all 4 plus hopsing would have heard it and come out of their room to see what happened
Didn't Hop Sing sleep in the kitchen?
Listen to the music the flute at 1108 What Rock Song Is This HE STOLE IT - It came out in 1972 ---9 years after this 😆
I you was trying to pick a false last name, Smith would be the worse one to pick.
That Jim had a hard head !
Bite him hoss bite em!!!
Awesome
and Bing Russell played the deputy...(Kurt's Daddy)
I hate how they stage Hoss to get his behind kicked all the time, then comes out victorious
Real hard for the guy that confessed defense lawyer to get him off for a confession given under torture.
Hoss is a better man than me....I would've taken him to the doctor in town.
