Notice at precisely at 2:42, how the gentleman downstairs grabs his wife’s hand as the singers sing:
“Es drückten deine shönen Hande” (“If, pressing with thy hands so lovely”).
Such a fine detail by the Director.

equally touching: the reaction of the elderly couple (background story: they are aristocratic French couple who have been relegated to the kitchen in their own home & the German army has taken over. The husband reluctantly listened to the concert - the wife was excited that this famous opera singers are guests in the house) -- their love for each other, weathering storms together & their approaching mortality, as well as acknowledgement of her being right are declared w/ his grasp of her hand

Tes jolies mains fermant mes yeux fidèles!

Diane Kruger acts so well with her face. Being German, her lip-sinking of the lyrics is particularly well done. The famous ad hoc Christmas truce on the Western Front caused great consternation in the upper echelons and they took measures to prevent any such occurrence in the future. God forbid that the 'enemy' is humanized. The

What a touching moment when the woman sings zum Sterben (unto [my] death) and the man immediately sings und zu meiner Ruh (and to my rest). Though this is a solo piece, it does give some extra meanings when singing by a couple.

For most viewers, you saw and heard only characters in a movie. For me, one of those characters, was in real life, a distant cousin of mine. I never had the chance to met or know him, as he died some time before I was born. My grandfather knew him, and my father was introduced to him before WW 2. After that, what WW 1 failed to do to our family, Hitler and his thugs and WW 2 did.

Those who maintain that the moment of greatest union between a man and a woman is that of sex, should watch this scene again and again. There is nothing like the union of souls, as in this case. It will never be forgotten or broken, absolutely. If any one has been lucky enough to enjoy an experience of this kind, he knows perfectly well what it means, even though the woman herself has been shared, as suggested in the movie. Congratulations and many thanks for posting. Greetings from Argentina.

You really MUST see the movie to see it & experience it. It's a beautiful anti-war film (& based on real occurrences). No female is supposed to be in the war zone. She & "the singer" are both famous opera singers in Europe (they're Germans). They are also lovers who'd planned to marry, but he was conscripted/drafted into the army when war broke out and have been separated for some time. She got permission to perform for the Kaiser at the front & they go sing for the soldiers.

To Jeroen van Baaren et al.
When sung during the wedding ceremony it would be much better to have this wording for the first stanza:
Then comes the next one as written bei Bach or Stölzel
    Bleibst du bei mir ...usw
    Mit herzlichsten Grüßen

It's about a historical fact during the first world war. The soldiers refused to fight each other at Christmas. The man does not want to sing for the enemy. The woman wants this either but she realizes the consequences. All conflicting parties seem to find each other in this beautiful aria. "Bist du bei mir" from Stolzer, noted by Bach.
"Bist" is not correct German. It says, "but if you're with me, everything else is important".Something like that.

What enemy? In the movie, Anna suggested to the Kronprinz (the son of and heir to Kaiser Wilhelm) that she and Nikolaus give a recital for him near the Western front on Christmas Eve because she sees it as her only chance to see her lover again and spend a little bit of time with him. She basically uses the love the Kronprinz has for music and the opera to gain her own ends. It's much harder for Nikolaus who didn't know of her plan, and who has gone through traumatic experiences in these first five months of the war, probably hasn't sung in all those months, and is quite overwhelmed by this situation he suddenly finds himself in. And I daresay that having taken up smoking didn't help his voice either... 😉

Many discussions can be avoided by checking the WHOLE video.
At the end you see the CREDITS.
Anyway, this video creates a lot of confusion ...

Most of us, reasonably, look at the opening information for artist and movie information.

He will do this as a religious man just as intended. But the original Text is not by Bach but STÖLZEL. In any case it is a wonderful way to show love. Here "Bist" is like "Art Thou". Correct should be: "Wenn du ..." But its not so important. Its a beautifull aria anyway.

The original French title is 'Joyeux Noel' which is also the title of the US and UK versions. In Spanish it's called 'Noche de Paz', tue German edition is called 'Merry Christmas'. I know there's an Italian version as well but don't know its title.
