Yes - keep the threat detection loaded. I had a situation where someone was kicking in my front door, and I had 3 seconds to react to save my ass. The quick access of a ready firearm de-escalated the event.
I use the AR because I'm a US Marine and it's the weapon system I'm most experienced and effective with. That's why I need an AR for defense. I use hollow points in my home defense mag.

A lot of very good points to embrace the AR for home defense. I have one but mainly rely on my pump-action 20 GA, but in a SHTF scenario so glad I have options.
As a dyed in the wool "shotgun for home defense" guy, that was the best explanation I have ever heard for having an AR as your primary home defense weapon. Now, I have to justify my empty wallet to my wife.
I can tell you now, if you want an AR for home defense, get something like the S&W M&P-15. I have one and let me tell you, it’s a flarking blast to shoot and it’s my fun time “Pom Pom” gun. And at $650-$700, if god forbid you have to use it to defend your property, it’s a lot easier to swallow when you have to loose it to the police evidence locker!…,Not to mention easier to replace too. Now, at around the same time as you made that comment, I done gone and got a Daniel Defense MK12….It’s of much higher quality, more range, far easier to shoot and will last an entire lifetime AR…But when it comes to home defense…I’m grabbing my M&P cause…Let’s put it this way, my “Sexy Expensive Bit*h” set me back 2.2K already and I’m not gonna loose that expensive fine piece of machinery to the police. Besides, most home defense happen in less than 30 yards, where the “12’s” 400 yard effective range is basically redundant! Yeah, go for the M&P-15. At $650, it’s a lot easier to convince good ol’ SWMBO too!….Rathet than the 2.2K MK12!
Buy a stripped lower receiver, and a "complete" kit from Model 1 sales, and build your own! The basic kits start around $530. Lowers vary, depending on your location. I've built several of these kits, and never had a bad one!
@@blakeumthun8128 Well this is an old comment and you probably already got your setup but I would avoid Model 1 Sales. They were good when no one else was around but their builds are not the best quality (I'm actually surprised they are still in business). PSA, BCA, or Combat Armory are pretty much the go to options. The latter two are the cheapest because they are manufacturers who make the parts other companies use. If you do already have an AR, use a ballistic tip 55grn bullet, such as V-MAX. Reason for that is that they have thinner jackets and faster expansion so they will break apart more readily if it its your dry wall or fence which reduces the issue of collateral. Even if you hit your target, even handgun calibers will often sail straight through the individual and not be stopped unless it hits bone, so "over penetration" while not a huge concern (as shooting at a slight angle up simply by crouching or kneeling mostly eliminates the risk) can be easily be almost completely negated with 5.56 and proper ammo. There is a website called "how I did it" which has a writeup which revealed this capability a decade ago.
Thank you as always Mass for your time spent educating and keeping us safe. Your expert knowledge and experience along with your professionalism is time well spent watching every video you share with us. The content is always "On Target". Thanks to Wilson Combat for their contributions to all of us as well.
As a uk resident this video is wholly academic but l found it extremely useful not only in a ‘walkaround’ of the weapon, but why it is such an important line for gun owners that must not be crossed by government policies. The calm and authoritative voice of the demonstrator was also very good to listen to. All the best from the 🇬🇧✊🇺🇸
If you are in a home defense situation there are people in your home that need to leave, in close combat you are talking feet not yards. A 556 round has about 3k velocity at the mussel a target 10 feet away is getting most if not all of that 3k with a round designed to either fragment or mushroom at impact. If a piece does get through most of the energy is gone in that round but before it leaves it has torn up the target with a 4 to 6 inch cavity and the subject will probably die from the shock to the system or bleed out.
Excellent video. I never owned an AR either until my buddy introduced me to them. Now I have two. They are an amazing system. I generally keep a loaded pistol on me all the time because I live on a farm and I have four legged critters I have to keep watch for to protect my livestock, But obviously will work on two legged critters too.
Man I've always been afraid that my hearing would never come back, but the threat of multiple invaders has me reconsidering. Better off deaf than dead I suppose.
I was expecting a long winded video since anything over 2-3 minutes usually is, BUT INSTEAD, this is hands down the best video on home defense out there. I commend you, sir, for your thoroughness/articulation and honest unbiased instruction. As a retired LEO Supervisor you have served the home owner with more VALUABLE information than the majority of videos combined. Thank you and I am grateful to have stumbled across this. P.S. thank you for mentioning the scenarios of 3 am knock possibly being law enforcement following up. The scariest experience is perceiving the armed LAWFUL citizen as a threat. It is the worse case scenario for both parties and traumatizing afterwards. God bless and stay safe.
The only retort that I have is that firing a 223/5.56 round inside without hearing protection is going to be extremely painful and probably blow your eardrums. Adding a suppressor to a 223/5.56 won't help too much, so considering a subsonic round like the 300 blackout paired with a suppressor is IMO an option that is worth considering.
I have been following you for years. As a writer and a TV personally. It a pleasure to listen to your story from the 70s when I was a young deputy sheriff and had very little knowledge about firearms. I cut my teeth a old model 10. I have many pistols to choose to cary but my comforter zone is a 38 spl. Your knowledge with the legal system 1st class. Thanks for all you have done and continue to do.
Great presentation as always from Mr. Ayoob. I've always gotten annoyed whenever anyone raises the "Do you need that many rounds..."issue when it comes to self-defense. I don't know about anyone else, but if I'm in a life/death scenario I want every available force multiplier available to ensure my survival and end the threat. If it's more rounds, more weapons, more defensive positions, etc....you name it, I want them all and my adversary to have none. Just my $0.02...
The media once asked Polk County Sherrif Judd why they unloaded 87 rounds into the criminal who had shot at the police... and the Sherrif said; "because at that moment it was all the ammo we had!"
@@felsinferguson1125 The American Way! Having thwarted an attempted home invasion of 8-10 thugs, I recommend everyone think about that many potentially being through your door and on you in your home in 5-20 seconds. I'd installed a steel door with 3.5" stainless screws and oversized lock strike plates. Without that, they'd have been in. I was on the other side with a .357 Mag... but only 5 rounds, never expecting that many at once. It's police documented with other witnesses, they were randomly hitting dark homes. My house doesn't stand-out... no gun stickers, etc.
@@TomRolfson That sounds like an interesting tale! My personal best is four local teen punks. Weapon at hand for me was a crappy brush camo painted 22" Savage 12 gauge pump hunting gun. One of those cases where that racking of the pump ABSOLUTELY worked to end a home invasion without a single shot fired.
Never underestimate the value of a good home security system being part of your defence. Your fancy rifle is no good if you're fast asleep and awake to a gun being held to your head.
Exactly, we'll said. Due to recent incidents, some of us gun folk have been getting wrapped around the axle about no-knock warrants, and how they should be eliminated. But, I'm more concerned with anyone...ANYONE, who doesn't live in my house, being able to gain forced entry...before I can react appropriately. That is totally unacceptable. In the most recent no-knock case I've seen, the LEOs had somehow obtained a key, and entered after simply unlocking the front door. No second lock, no deadbolt, not even a slider-chain. Within seconds, the guy who had been allegedly sleeping on the couch was shot dead (yes, he had a gun, but that's beside the point). In the Jayme Closs kidnapping case, the killer got into the family's home very easily, to say the least. In both cases, the home security was sorely lacking. To your point, my point is this...let's be honest, from a homeowner's perspective...is there really a difference between a chaotic home invasion, and a no-knock warrant being served at the wrong address? Wow, that went waaaay longer than I thought it would...a thousand apologies.
@@bassblaster162 Agreed. Not staking out a house and serving the warrant on the road is just plain laziness. Not even mentioning not getting the right house some of the time. No knock warrants are a huge danger to the public

This is a great video for those not in the gun community to see why the AR15 is so important. Our go to HD gun for all of my family members is a glock 19 in a recover tactical brace. A stock, forward grip, red dot, and a light. The whole set up weighs in at 3lbs, holds 30 rounds of 9mm hp.
Great video! The only thing I disagree with, and it’s not a big deal, is the wml on the rifle using it to scan the house. If you have a decent light, you can keep the rifle at a low ready with the light at the ground and still have more than enough light to see straight ahead inside a home without worrying about flagging the wrong person. I personally use the olight Odin with the pressure pad. It has 2000 linens at I think 19k candela but also a good peripheral light outside the hotspot.
Great informative. I was looking at AR shotguns for home and AR-15 for land and longer range. This has given me something to think about. Maybe just AR-15s over AR shotgun.
This video has so many amazing gems in it. I’m going to watch this multiple times over to gain as much as I can. Much respect to this man, looking forward to watching all of his lessons.
Great logical presentation. I presently use a bullpup 12 gauge with multiple 5 or 10 round magazines loaded with number 1 buckshot. Nr. 1 buck has 12 30 cal projectiles instead of 9 38 cal 00 buckshot. In side the house it does not spread very much, but it sives a better chance of a hit over a single round in a panic situation. Practice with the weapn of your choice is key.
If a police officer shoots someone who is in their own home answering their door, even if they are holding a rifle, something is very wrong with our policy tactics.
Sadly, it happens all the time. Phoenix is littered with them the last few years. In most jurisdictions it is considered a justifiable shooting due to the perceived risk to the officer's life. Answering the door with a weapon in hand is by definition a 'furtive gesture'. :-/
These videos are fun to watch (I do not own firearms) I’m alwase curious about these guns, I do not want to own one and I don’t wanna learn, BUT this is America and you should have the right to have one , and take to gun range, hunt , etc

7:44 The absolute best answer to that tenacious question. Always enjoy Ayoob's insight and conversation on such a contested issue...defense and use of force. Thanks for all your work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for addressing the over penetration concern. That was what held me back from an AR for self defense and made me a little nervous when I hear that's what others use. Excellent advice.
Love your videos! When I was a kid, Dad took me out shooting, taught me the rules. Also showed me where the guns were stored, when to use them. And everyone in our family respected it!
I've been reading your articles, post internet, since my early 20's. I'm now in my mid 50's, and only just now realized I've been pronouncing your last name wrong. Just glad your still around, and still enjoy listening too your teachings.
Just when you think you know a thing or two, a guy like this comes along with his experience, knowledge and wisdom and is absolute gold. Thank you for this presentation Massad Ayoob.
The guy in Oklahoma who stopped the three home intruders used an AR.
It was also the rifle of choice for Stephen Willeford when he rushed out of his house to engage the Sutherland Springs church murderer.
So... he was spotting them through his scope? He must have had a real big house.
@@kshepard52 not every optic has magnification
@@kshepard52 the "scope" that Mas had on his carbine is a 1x red dot optics. It has no magnification. This is the optics of choice for close range applications.
@@bradsimpson8724 except that Willeford stored his magazines empty. He had to load the mag before facing the active shooter. As much as I admire his action I believe he could have be at the church faster, thus stopping the mass shooting earlier and potentially saving more lives, had he kept a few mags loaded and ready to go.
Yes - keep the threat detection loaded. I had a situation where someone was kicking in my front door, and I had 3 seconds to react to save my ass. The quick access of a ready firearm de-escalated the event.
this has to be one of the TOP 5 videos on home defense i ever seen in 30 years, this dude has seen many things in his life and knows how to do it
I use the AR because I'm a US Marine and it's the weapon system I'm most experienced and effective with. That's why I need an AR for defense. I use hollow points in my home defense mag.
With the hollow points, criminal scumbag will need nothing more than a body bag!!!!
I thought Marines used M16/M4 rifles not AR variants. Did that change recently.
@@dangerdoberman huh? No the fuck it isn't?
We used the old Varmint Grenade bullets in these for the 2002 Olympic Games security operations. Even in heavy crowds. Almost no overpenetration at all during testing, so there was some confidence that they could be used without hurting innocent bystanders.
Very good point for owning a AR15.
That explanation at the 7:45 mark is worth watching alone!
This is a good video for sure .
Thanks Massad !!
I have a big concern for those " no knock warrants ". In the rare instance the cops are at " the wrong house " things could get ugly real fast . Cops have in the past in my city block went to the wrong house , twice . These were not " no knock warrants " but it could happen . I think " no knock warrants " should be illegal . This is just my humble opinion .
Agreed! NO KNOCK warrants are extremely dangerous especially at 0 ' dark: 30!
I understand the idea to prevent evidence from being destroyed or catching a dangerous guy unaware. But what happens if the police have the wrong house? Citizens have been killed and police have been killed by citizens.
It does not matter which weapon you use, In all cases the cops will not like you having a weapon pointed at them or you shooting at them, regardless of weapon you are likely to be shot or wind up in jail.
When Massad speaks. we listen!
Thank you, Mas. I keep my HD AR loaded with 45 grain JHP to minimize over penetration. I am glad to hear your confirmation on this choice of ammo.
A few years ago in Texas during the church shooting the one guy came and help save a lot of people with his AR 15 this is a Jim mungai again from Kennerdell Pennsylvania
I'm convinced Massad is a national treasure, I pray he can keep spreading this valuable information for years to come.
So glad I stumbled on this channel several months ago. Each video with Mr. Ayoob is like a master class.
Welcome aboard!
Love Massad
Born and raised in a military family so I’ve understood , respected , and owned firearms of sizes and calibers since a very young age . I don’t know in all my years of being heavily involved with shooting and hunting that I’ve ever heard someone be able to so clearly and intelligently articulate these topics!!! Thank you all for taking the time to hopefully change a few people’s minds on their stance for owning and using firearms!!!! Love this channel
Thanks Massad. All the best instructors in gunnery and related topics always say to hear and abide by every word you say. I do my best to do that and recommend it to all I know in this discipline. You have certainly saved no telling how many people no telling how much trouble as well as saved countless lives.
@@smc1942 Not knowing the 1st thing about AR's, let alone how to build one, it's probably above my skill level. But that's a good idea!
That you Sir!🙏🏿🇺🇸
Thank you as always Mass for your time spent educating and keeping us safe. Your expert knowledge and experience along with your professionalism is time well spent watching every video you share with us. The content is always "On Target". Thanks to Wilson Combat for their contributions to all of us as well.
As a uk resident this video is wholly academic but l found it extremely useful not only in a ‘walkaround’ of the weapon, but why it is such an important line for gun owners that must not be crossed by government policies.
The calm and authoritative voice of the demonstrator was also very good to listen to.
All the best from the 🇬🇧✊🇺🇸
Thanks!
Excellent content presented by one of the most reasonable, relevant experts.
Sorry did your psychopath ass just call humans "2 legged critters?" Yea you're fucking psycho.
Thank Sir. I have read and watched, read and listened to your top-notch advice for decades. You know from where you speaketh. God bless.

Man I've always been afraid that my hearing would never come back, but the threat of multiple invaders has me reconsidering. Better off deaf than dead I suppose.
Yup. You can always start the clock on a suppressor and in the meantime keep some electronic earmuffs handy and hope you have time to put them on.
@PUTRID HEAD Ehh... You aver shot an AR inside without ear pro???
@PUTRID HEAD i
I was expecting a long winded video since anything over 2-3 minutes usually is, BUT INSTEAD, this is hands down the best video on home defense out there.
Always glad to see Mr.Ayoob.
Been following Mas for nearly 30 years. Never disappoints.
Shooting in dark is a negative multiplier. My .02 = 4🙃 mozart could play piano upside down from floor were sometimes he slept it off.
This level of quality information can only be found only on the Wilson Combat Channel.
The media once asked Polk County Sherrif Judd why they unloaded 87 rounds into the criminal who had shot at the police... and the Sherrif said; "because at that moment it was all the ammo we had!"
It's refreshing to hear the correct and proper explanations and premises behind the function and psychology of home defense.
I love the term "a pool weapon". Most properly equipped American homes are ready for more swimmers!
Let's just say that THIS home is equipped to handle more swimmers than sleepers :) Seems proper enough for me...
@@TomRolfson can you refer me to a news article of these 8-10 thugs you are referring too.

Massad is a fantastic educator and speaker on this topic.
Absolutely. First layer of defense.

That was the best and most informative explanation of why the AR15 I have ever heard
Great video Massad ! I thoroughly enjoyed the information!

Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a great video for those not in the gun community to see why the AR15 is so important. Our go to HD gun for all of my family members is a glock 19 in a recover tactical brace. A stock, forward grip, red dot, and a light.
The whole set up weighs in at 3lbs, holds 30 rounds of 9mm hp.
time to give that to joe biden's ATF
Great video! The only thing I disagree with, and it’s not a big deal, is the wml on the rifle using it to scan the house. If you have a decent light, you can keep the rifle at a low ready with the light at the ground and still have more than enough light to see straight ahead inside a home without worrying about flagging the wrong person. I personally use the olight Odin with the pressure pad. It has 2000 linens at I think 19k candela but also a good peripheral light outside the hotspot.
An old friend of ours house might be more dangerous walking whith out light than crashing noises are
Great informative. I was looking at AR shotguns for home and AR-15 for land and longer range. This has given me something to think about. Maybe just AR-15s over AR shotgun.
Always enjoy, and greatly value, all that Mas offers.

This video has so many amazing gems in it. I’m going to watch this multiple times over to gain as much as I can. Much respect to this man, looking forward to watching all of his lessons.
3:43 did he say "derpy"?

A blast forward device is nice too.
Agreed, but it will still be loud as hell when the first shot is fired inside your house. Not necessarily a bad thing; neighbors will wake up, someone will call 911 (you should have already, but I digress), and if the dumbass who broke into your house has a buddy they will probably 💩 their pants and run.
Great arguments for the AR-15 !

I have been shooting guns, since I was 16 years old. My father taught me how to handle them safely with a Winchester Semi-Auto .22 rifle. Bought my fist pistol in my 30's. I have had training and also have a CPL, that I will be renewing soon. I have never heard a more concise explanation and justification for the selection of the AR-15, with the standard 30 round mag, for home defense. Your answer to it's use was so on point. The right answer to the group who wants to take ours away and leave them in the wrong hands instead, the people who follow no laws. Thank you Massad Ayoob!
