  • Have a pile of audio cassettes or audio books or even mix tapes and no way to play them or even digitize them? You're going to love the Feir Cassette Converter then! It lets you easily convert any audio cassette into an MP3 file and with auto-reverse, it's as easy as plugging in a spare flash drive, pushing play and coming back 90 minutes later.
    Tech expert Dave Taylor of www.AskDaveTay... checks out the Feir audio cassette to mp3 converter, however, and finds that it's not without its limitations and design problems. Still, it works and he demonstrates how he converted his favorite audio book from cassette to a set of Mp3 files ready to play on his iPhone.

    Dave, I'm glad to hear you can easily put an audio book on your iPhone. Ten years ago, after much time trying to figure out how to do that with my iPhone 4S, and another fifteen minutes on the phone with an Apple tech after that (also without success), I gave up and bought my first Samsung android. Of course, I knew, at the time, I could have paid iTunes $125 and had the audiobook available instantly...but, why do that when I download audiobooks for free from the local library!
    I do like Samsung's though so it's not a big loss. Plus, by paying the monthly insurance for repair or replacement, I haven't had to buy a new phone since 2013!
    Good video, Dave, thanks!

    I recently found your channel, very informative. I’m in the process of recording Linda Ronstadt’s first 16 albums using a boom box, my computer and audacity. I do have a ton of cassettes to convert to digital also. I have forgotten how many gigabytes an audio cassette takes up so to get the right flash drive.

    When i went to play back the mp3 file transfer there were sound dropouts every two seconds or so. The company told my my stick drive was not formatted properly. It was Fat32 and that was one of the formats they recommended. I'm trying ExFat as i type this. The guy at Staples told me ExFat might be the best one to use.

      Here's what the company says on its old sales page:
      You just need to plug a USB flash drive to the USB host of the Cassette Player.then press "record" button, the device will convert the tape to your USB flash drive in MP3 format automatically.
      You can also playback on it to check the converted music files by pressing the playback button of the cassette player.

      it's a cassette tape, so the sound quality is not fantastic from the original source. The reproduction is decent, however. And the build quality? Again, it's a budget cassette player from a factory in China. It's not a high-end audiophile device.

I've watched a few other cassette to mp3 converters and no one mentions the bitrate... although if you use one of the models that doesn't record to a USB drive and rather plays to your computer and uses Audacity or Audition to record you can use that software and convert to whatever mp3 bitrate you want

    But you say nothing about the quality of the finished product--how can anyone judge the price if we don't know how well the item actually works, regardless of the simplicity of the process?...Does the end result have the background hissing noises that plague most of these cheap, far from perfected converters?

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 роки тому +1

      I found the end result eminently listenable. The device doesn't have a high end audio filtering system so like any cassette player, you're going to get hiss and slight variations in playback speed (warble), but that's inherent in cassettes and why they're not so popular in a digital age.

    The audio recorded on this mp3 recorder sounds like crap! It has a buzz or some kind of low sounding hum in the background and it it a very bad recording of a cassette! A cassette, which probably doesn't sound that good anyway. So... it sucks! All of these type models are CHEAPLY MADE and are ALL made by the same company in China no matter what the brand.
