I have noticed that many young people have a tendency to just give up if they have two choices that they don’t like, not realizing that there is one choice that they REALLY don’t like. I recognize it because I was also that young person in 2016 who was pissed that Bernie didn’t get the nomination. Now that I’m a bit older, there is nothing I regret more than me and many young people like me not voting in that election. Who knows what we would be talking about today if we all had.
The difference between Trump and his supporters, when it comes to their attitude toward his former critics, is pretty easily explained, at least IMO. Most of his base - the ordinary voters, not Washington folk - are capable of deep loyalty. They really love Trump, and will never forgive those they believe have mistreated him. Trump, on the other hand, is almost entirely transactional: kiss the ring, and he'll overlook your misdeeds...at least temporarily. In addition, I think Trump has little real interest in people who have always supported him. He seems to take a great deal of pleasure, in humiliating and dominating former rivals, then basking in their adoration and self-abasement. It's almost like an S&M dynamic, without the sex. As for Vance, his defining characteristic, as far as I can see, is his opportunism, a quality he shares with Trump. Then again, that's the case with most of the Rs who have fallen in line. Very few really like Trump, but they know better than to say so. There may be some moderates left in the party, but not many of them have sufficient courage to admit it publicly. Then again, it seems that the whole definition of "conservative" and "moderate" have shifted dramatically since Trump came on the scene. He is not what anyone would have considered conservative back in the 80s (witness his bromance with Putin, for example), yet somehow now he's the real deal, and actual conservatives like Liz Cheney are dismissed as RINOs. The notion of populism, too, has taken a beating. It used to be at least partially about the economic interests of the working class; now it's just a fashionable disguise for nationalism, isolationism, and a whole raft of other "isms" that won't bear close scrutiny. . Heritage Foundation = economic libertarianism meets social conservatism. Worst of both worlds. Christian Nationalism is a contradiction in terms, or at least it should be.

@@jj947 Not here in America. Our traditional right is what Reagan called his "3-legged stool": fiscal hawks, foreign policy hawks, and social conservatives. Someone suggested a video about making a video on separation of church and state. I think mentioning how countries like France do separation of church and state differently would be nice. The simplified way I’ve heard it described is the US has freedom of religion while France has freedom from religion.
The principles are more or less the same, and have the same source in Enlightenment philosophy, even though the current separation of church and state in France has only been made into law in 1905 (bringing back the revolutionnary era policy, after the Naponeonic concordat which lasted a century). I think the main difference is cultural, and I don't mean only in regard to the catholics/protestants divide (it obviously matters a lot, but there's more to it). The thing is, in France, religion has become something very private, since at least the 4th Republic (it was a very different matter during the 3rd Republic); contrary to a lot of European countries, since that time and the MRP, there has never been a major christian democrat right or centre right political party in France (although some did try to push one, and failed). There certainly are ultra-religious on the far-right (and they are not fans of Vatican II, for a lot of them), but even there the main political figures are wary of using religious talking points in their discourse, they know it would be bad politics. For a long time, French catholics only demonstrated when one topic was brought: "l'école libre" (basically the status and funding of religious private schools). When "La Manif pour tous" happened, and rallied a number of catholics against gay marriage, it was kind of a new thing in the French political culture, but it didn't last, the law passed anyway and the opposition soon dropped. The "culture war" is not really a thing here, abortion is not a political issue for example, gay marriage isn't anymore, and christian nationalism is not a thing either. And the vast majority of French citizens, as it seems, even among religious ones, prefer to keep it that way.
@@welcometonebalia I wish the US had a similar way of viewing religion in politics and government. We have states now trying to force religion in schools, which is unconstitutional and will be challenged in court. But the fact that they even thought it was ok to do is an issue. My takes are extreme in the opposite direction though, I am very anti-theist and view religion as a burden to society. Basically the bad out weighs the good so I don’t think it should be in society/public life.

30:10 You called it.
I have no idea if he's the best choice, but it's amusing how he used to criticize Trump, and is now a complete bootlicker of him.
3:07 "Assuming theres no changes beetween now and the election day" 💀(watching this in august 2024)

I think we really overrate how a VP pick changes the ticket. Most people vote for the presidential nominee and don't really take the VP into strong consideration. Vance won't xhange much. He just needs to do well at the VP debate and stick with Trump on the campaign trail.

Don't see how. Quayle's issue was that he was a gaffe machine. Vance, and even the people who can't stand him and thinks his policies are crazy agree with this, is a very smart and articulate guy. He's been one of the main people building an actually coherent ideology for the populist right.
@@HistoryNerd808 the idea of a “populist” right is inherently incoherent. Right wing politics is by definition about maintaining and expanding social and economic hierarchies, and concentrating power at the top.
Vance isn’t even a populist. What’s his plan to get political and economic power back to working people?
@jj947 I do think conservative is probably a better term but that's America hehe.
Meh, Dan Quayle was no Jack Kennedy. J.D. Vance is no Dan Quayle.
@@jj947 Not here in America. Our traditional right is what Reagan called his "3-legged stool": fiscal hawks, foreign policy hawks, and social conservatives. This coalition fell apart when communism fell away as a glue holding them together. The populists are different on 2 of those fronts. Also, the right can absolutely be populist, right and left are historical accidents and mean different things in different times and places. As for your question about what his economic views are, I'll point you toward a broader interview he did with Ross Douthat of the New York Times(who he was apparently friends with, even before he wrote "Hillbilly Elegy", his memoirs that put him on the map) from a few days ago. The article is titled "What JD Vance Believes" and it covers a lot of ground like his conversion to Trumpism, his support for foreign policy realism, as well as his populist economics.

Why do you think that?
@@omarrp14 I can tell you, as a French atheist, I am way more worried by American evangelicals than by French catholics...
