THE HYPE IS REAL: Lofoten Islands, Norway

  • Lofoten Islands, Norway - The Lofoten islands off the northern coast of Norway, are home to some of the most beautiful and rugged stretches of landscape I’ve ever seen.
Our journey to Lofoten actually started in the city of Bodø, where we spent the day exploring the city and the saltstraumen maelstrom before catching the ferry from Bodo to Lofoten (Moskenes).
    -
The saltstraumen is one of the best things to do in Bodo, as it is a small strait that connects the sea and a fjord with one of the strongest tidal currents in the world.
This wild whirlpool of boils and vortex’s happens when tides change and water funnels through the strait.
    -
From our basecamp in Sorvagen, we have two days to explore the best things to do in Lofoten, on the southern islands, before needing to report to the capital city of Svolvaer for a dream event.
Our first stop is on the southern end of Moskenes Island at little fishing village called Å - Once a town that specialized in stockfish, it’s main income now is tourism, although, there isn’t many people around this time of year - which is actually one of the big reasons why we came in March.
    -
Next up, its the oldest and perhaps most picturesque fishing village in the Lofoten Archipelago - Hamnøy
    -
And just a few minutes back down the E10, is Reine. The 69-acre village is the administrative center of Moskenes Municipality, has a population of 314 people, and it’s major lifeline is very easy to see - and smell.
Cod or Skrei, is known as the Norwegian Miracle.
Skrei comes from one of the world’s largest and most sustainably managed cod stocks.
Although it doesn’t seem like it here, only 10% of over 400 million migrating cod are caught and branded skrei.
All over the Lufoten islands between February and May, you’ll see an endless supply of drying cod on these giant wooden racks.
They’re left out here for about three months, before being brought inside to mature for up to another 12 months.
Stockfish is the countries longest sustained export commodity, going all the way back to the viking days.
    -
We also stopped at Anita's for her classic fish burger and finished the day at Ramberg beach (Rambergstranda).

Wow, loved this video! I'm from Lofoten and I truly appreciate the honesty and that you didn't "overedit" the colors and make it look like it's sunny all the time, like most people do. Lofoten has changing weather all the time, often all the seasons in one day - and that is a huge part of the experience! Thank you!

Every time I see a video about Norway, makes me miss it even more.
If home is where your heart is, I left mine at Norway, and I need to go there to find it ASAP. Maybe when I retire? Before that would be way better, but who knows?
Miss the cold, the mountains, the afternoon hikes, the camping, just roaming around crossing beautiful landscapes and forests, the nice and friendly people, the great meals, and speaking bit of Norwegian, for as much as my small vocabulary allowed me to.
From the boller to whale, from Bergen to Oslo, from Mandal to Skarsvåg, from the forst to the fjord, I miss you, Norway!
Love to you all, all the way from a Brazilian to whole Norway.

It doesn't matter if it's January or July, it's still one of the most fascinating and picturesque places in Norway.

    • @r.thomassen6285

@@GarethLeonard I think it is too late for the northern lights. It must be pitch black and clear sky. The colder it is the better the chances are to see the northern lights. January is a good month for such things. But I'm not completely sure when the northern lights are most visible. I do think it is january. It is for sure freaking cold here then, and dark. And not the best time to visit for anything else than the northern lights.
By the way, we didn't care too much about the northern lights before tourist started to come in thousands in the middle of winter to see it. It was just like whatever, nothing much to be hysterical about. But now even local people go out and look if the northern lights are extra strong. If it is just a little bit, nobody really cares too much, if at all. But the extra strong northern lights flashing over the sky is quite fascinating, I must admit. But even the strongest northern lights does not really look like in photos, where I suspect they have amplified the colors quite a bit. Or perhaps the artificial lights most places make the colors disappear more? I have never seen the northern lights from a remote location without artificial lights, so it might look different. I know tourists are sent to such locations, so it must be a reason behind. I have watched northern lights from quite remote places with less artificial light, and yes, it appeared stronger.
I have not really been in Lofoten since 1995 (the exception was a short daytrip to Svolvær), and I live only 2,5 hours of so away by car. I must drive out there some day. It is for sure a very beautiful place.
I dream of travelling to America one day, to see the magnificent tornadoes. A tornado chasing holiday, if I dare.

    • @ThePurpleRay
      @ThePurpleRay 5 років тому +1

You can see Northern lights from late fall to early spring. But i do reccomend from the middle of december out january. In this time period we have a few days called darktime (mørketid) and the sun won't come over the Horizon. This is a very depressing time for those that live here. But also its magical how everything that is covered in snow gets a rich blue glow. And the moonlight is so bright at night you probably won't need a lamp walking outside. Not to forget the stars and Aurora dancing. After the darkperiod the sun will make the most amazing portraits as its slowly rising a little higher every day. The sky still gets pitch black at night out march. But it's different all over Norway. I write from Lofoten Islands.

I've been in Båtsfjord (Finnmark) for 3 months-ish, jan-apr. Indeed I saw a bunch of those "weak" northern lights, it was almost becoming a common sight. But the surprise came when I saw the first (of three!) dancing northern lights, with 2 to 3 different color dancing around, blending in together and changing shape. I saw all 3 in February. Such a stunning, inspiring experience. Æ ælske Norge å nordmenn!

I am from further north in Norway. I remember threee friends and me had a road trip from the high north down to Lofoten. We drove via Finland. In Lofoten, well, we think it's beautiful but we are used to our own country. We're really not that much in Å from what we see. We hear tourists says how beautiful Norway is. We go 'Oh, OK, thank you, well it is' and we think what the hell they mean about that. For us the riviera is nice, the swiss alps etc. That is exotic to us. btw did you taste the stock fish? It is my favorite. 1/3 of my annual meals are fresh cod, salted cod and 'boknafisk' (cod aired for about 12 days).

Curious! Other than just wanting to take the ferry or visiting Bodo, is there a reason why I never see people simply take flights from Oslo/Bergen directly into the lofoten islands? It just seems easier if you’re mostly wanting to spend your time in Lofoton. I understand there are two airports and the pricing is about the same as flying to Bodo. I want to make sure I’m not missing something! (We are going in May) We won’t mind renting a car in Lofoton if it’s going to save us a lot of time. Thanks!

@@gullintanni Brrr! Glad I live in a tropical climate. I feel miserable even during heavy rains and thunderstorms. I can't imagine myself shivering all day, but I suppose it would be worth it to experience just once. Lovely country though. I love living near the ocean/sea. Cheers!

@@awkwardaquamarine19 You get used to the cold and we live for skiing and winter activities. We have to spend a lot of money on warm clothes though. Luckily it's cheap for us to escape the winter for a fortnight in the sun as our salaries match how expensive it is here. Down south where I live it's already 20C and it can get to 30C in the summer. I ski and I am a pc gamer so the winter is tolerable to me. I love this climate actually, but the winters can be hard if you don't ski or snowboard. You should come visit in the summer and see the midnight sun, I recommend Senja over Lofoten as it has barely any tourists and is just as nice.

I spent a month in Norway. Drove from Oslo to Lofoten...I thought Lofoten was awful. Far too many people, crazy drivers, weather that changes every 15 minutes...after a week of putting up with it, I got out the place. Plus the campsites are the pits...it may be great for a snapshot for IG when the weathers good, but to actually stay there for a week it’s very different in reality.
