Building a cedar strip canoe - Episode 11, Glassing the Exterior

In this episode, with the help of my friends Antoine and Adam, I apply the fibreglass and epoxy to the outside of the hull.
This is a milestone as significant as the whisky plank, and approaching this full-day task had been filling me with trepidation. By luck, good support, and oodles of preparation, it went well.

TRY A ROLLER NEXT TIME - I have abandoned brushes that leave bristles behind and scrapers that don't do a consistent job leaving the fiber weave texture at places. Using a 4" tight foam roller is the only way to go 😊. I get a very smooth coverage an almost no cloth texture in the first coat. The second coat eliminates any are slight cloth texture and puts on a very even coat of epoxy without drips and sagging.

I’m 11 episodes into this series on abstract pencil sharpening. Really innovative stuff. One suggestion: less boat building and more pencil sharpening.

Hi Mark, glad to hear there's others undertaking projects like these in NI! My fabric came from East Coast Fiberglass in England. It's the 200g plain weave, supplied at 1.5 m width. Make sure you request two pieces, shipped rolled not folded, each just a bit longer than the canoe (ie for my 15' (4.6 m) canoe, it was 2 x 5m lengths). They seem to happily ship to NI.
