      Nice thing about most parts of a boat is that nothing is square or at right angles. I am updating all my shop cabinets now and making everything square I find harder as I am not often required to do it.

      OrcaBoats yes, that’s my point exactly! Every now and then I find myself doing archways! Lots of fun! I’ve been an avid kayaker for 20 yrs now, time to build myself a nice day touring boat! Keep up the top shelf work!

    I love the sound of that wood on wood squeak of tightly fitting pieces, especially the last one to close.

      I was reminded of the Nightingale Houses floors, in Kobe Japan. There were put intentionally to squeak, if a Ninja where to walk on it, in quiet of the night. They said it made the sound of a nightingale. to my tin ear, it sounded like a squeak. Bill

    What makes a true craftsman: taking more time to remove that last few thousandths of an inch for a perfect fit than it took to make the whole piece.

    Would a strong center strip / keel be a good idea- providing a secure center point for the body strips...? I'm going to make a canoe, and do it that way...

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  4 роки тому +1

      I suppose a denser wood down the center would make a stiffer hull. There are different planking patterns that one could use and what I am showing is just one of them. Others are herringbone or alternating between strips following the shear and then along the center line. Each has its own difficulties and challenges.

    have these strips been through a router to make the side convex and the other concave to accommodate the radius of the frames (I've seen this done of builds) yours seem to be straight edge. Have you found that it's not necessary and no gaps are created round the tight bends??

    good afternoon , I enjoy your video, it was very helpful please ,could you tell me what kind of wood filler you used for small crack between your strips

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  7 років тому +1

      On larger gaps, I use epoxy mixed with sawdust. On very small and in the final sand before epoxy, you can use a simple water based wood filler.

    Could u have made it in two halves some how then cut a straight line down the middle and then join the sides together?

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  4 роки тому +2

      I suppose that could work, but I think it would be very difficult to get the different colours of strips to meet up and the two halves would be very fragile to move around to join them up.

    Do you have an idea of what it would cost for the wood alone? Just the cedar strips, not the plywood. Do you know where I could buy pre cut strips?

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  7 років тому +1

      The cost of strips for an average canoe will run around $600 Canadian. That is 70 strips at 17 ft. I sell strips as kits. Mostly square edge strips as this make for a better tight joint, but can do have bead and cove as well

      Yes. Regular wood glue as the entire structure is encased in fiberglass and resin so no glue should see any water.

    It's no wonder your points don't align. It's because they can't. When you cut the first side of the football you predetermined what your second side would look like. A mirror mage is possible only when you think ahead. I will show how everyone can do it in my first video.

    Do you use bead and cove strips? If not, why not?

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  5 років тому

      On canoes, I usually use bead and cove, but not always. On kayaks, I may use bead and cove on the hulls but never on the decks. Bead and cove is a faster build and less likely to see light through the hull. Having said that, with a lot of care and attention, one can get a good tight joint without bead and cove by working with a block plane to carefully bevel the edges to mate.

    Why didn't the strip ends match? Was your centerline miss cut ?

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  8 років тому +2

      You are correct. Pull saw went a little off line as I cut this portion of the center line, but it was only for a few strips and then all was fine. Just happened to be the part of fitting that I videoed.
