This movie was made by Luc Besson , like him or hate him, his work is always unique ^^ I don't remember if you watched the 5th element, but I would recommand it, it might be his most famous (and weird 😋 ) movie, with Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich and Gary Oldman (the bad guy in Leon). It's a classic 😉
I have also suggested Nikita, where the Jean Reno character really came from.

Leon and Kiss of the dragon are my favorite Besson`s movies.
I love this movie so much, and this was Natalie Portman's first movie. The first time I saw this I knew nothing about it, but I had seen Jean Reno in other movies, so I watched it for him. I was instantly blown away by Natalie Portman, and the movie in general. A few years later she was in Star Wars: Episode 1, and it was all history from there.
I watched this film for the first time just a few months ago! I love this channel, especially when films I haven't seen appear - it's like a recommendation engine for what I should watch next, and then I get to see your reaction afterwards haha

This film is from Luc Besson, Leon is based on a character from one of his earlier movies 'Nikita', which is another great film. I first saw Nikita in the cinema by accident, liked the look of the poster and it turned out to be a French film with English subtitles, but that didn't matter. It is worth watching, there is an English dubbed version, but I assume you could probably react to the original language version and just leave the subtitles on (not sure how the UA-cam copyright checker would react to that).
Gary Oldman (Stansfield) is also in another Luc Besson film which you will enjoy, The Fifth Element.
Definitely watch it in French. The English dubbing just doesn't work. One of my favorites.
No, this is the original version, and it's in English. besides Jean Réno who's French, all main actors are American, or at least from English speaking countries.
The French version is actually dubbed. Jean Reno did his own French dubbing. Even the extended director's cut shown in this video has never been dubbed.
Jean Reno is quite remarkable actor. Some films you might consider putting polls (if you plan to do more European films especially)

Truly a gem. I think this is the first role I saw Gary Oldman in, and it's still my favorite.
Eric Serra does the music for (I think) all of Luc Besson's movies. I can also highly recommend _La Femme Nikita;_ it has a similar vibe (and even features an alternate version of Leon!).

I didn't realize Mathilda was carrying "memories" from her family and Leon in the form of the bunny and the potted plant. Nice observation. Also I love this movie as well. Only saw it for the first time a little over a month ago and I was blown away. It's probably my favorite movie of all time because I love the lone wolf and cub trope and this is the best execution of it I've seen.
One of my favourite films. I would highly recommend The BIg Blue, also directed by Luc Besson and stars Jean Reno. For another Reno film, I think you'd enjoy 'Ronin'.
Another hitman-with-a-twist movie I would definitely recommend is Grosse Point Blank, also mid-90s. Great characters by a loaded cast and with dark comedic elements - special mention for Joan Cusack 🙂

Her dealing with the bullies reminded me of my son when we moved from the inner city to a suburb. When the bullies tried to push him around, he beat one of them up in the hallway, after he warned the bully what was going to happen. He told the vice principal what happened straight up and asked the bully, "Are you as bad as it gets around here?" Never had a problem after that.
One of my favorite movies of all time. It’s great to see someone else watch it for the first time.

this is my most favourite movie ever! there was talk about a movie follow up called 'Matilda' staring Nathalie Portman, infact they shot a scene or 2... they are on the internet if you search for them, but Luc Besson didnt want to be involved so Ms Portman pulled out.

A great reaction, it's a good film, but of course because she didn't listen Leon, and her actions ultimately got him killed, but that's what he was trying to teach her, revenge isn't the answer, it's like the Confucius saying, 'Before beginning on a path of revenge, dig two graves' as this is often the outcome.

For a much happier look into the very 1990’s world of professional assassins and high school reunions, highly recommend “Grosse Pointe Blank.” Really good sound track……

The 'Awkward Hitman' trope was very popular at the time this came out. A few others I'd recommend are "Grosse Pointe Blank" (1997) and "Coldblooded" (1995) for a bit more dark comedy take on the subject, and "The Point Of No Return" (1993) and "Angel's Dance" (1999) for somewhat more dramatic takes.

A young Natalie Portman was in another great film, called "Heat": both are definitely worth watching.

Since you liked this one you might also enjoy La Femme Nikita (1990) by the same director, Luc Besson. Jean Reno also appears as a supporting character that is almost a proto-Léon, though it isn’t nearly as well developed or personable a character.
The music is by Eric Serra, who also did the music for The Fifth Element, which is why it might sound familiar to you.

That great big dude who you called "Mega Man" ("Benny") was played by Keith A. Glascoe. In addition to being an actor and member of the New York Jets practice squad, he was a New York City firefighter. He passed away in the line of duty during the attack on New York City on September 11th, 2001.

Gary Oldman plays the charming but scary role perfectly in many of his roles. One of my favorites is The Firm 1988. It is quite dated now perhaps but you can see him dancing playfully with the duality of charming and scary even this early on in his career.
Gary Oldman's American debut in State of Grace as a drug addicted, charming but exceedingly evil member of the the Irish Mob in Boston is beyond brilliant. The final shootout in an Irish bar is one of the best gun fights ever filmed

@@Raving Just watched it and OMG what a movie. He was there with so many heavy hitters at such a young age and not only hold his own but nearly stole the show imo. I mean you are there with Ed Harris, Sean Penn and John C. Reilly and keep your cool that is an instant star in my book. OFC he has done bigger roles but god damn. Tnx for that recommendation man. Another great movie featuring a young actor is Paper Moon from 1973. It's a road comedy starring Ryan and Tatum O'Neal as a father and daughter pair of scammers on the road in U.S. Midwest during the Great Depression. Tatum O'Neal won an Oscar for her performance in it. She was only ten years old at the time. Peter Bogdanovich directed film with László Kovács in charge of cinematography. The film holds up well. Check it out when you can.
Hey Mary, this is such an exceptional movie, yet it is a bit unnerving to see the libidinous tension between the main characters. This film is a unique one and a top favorite of mine. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

1990s Gary Oldman was the most terrifying man on the planet.
The idea for this movie, came from the first luc Besson movie, La Femme Nikita, a very great movie! There was also an American version, tho not as good. Most luc Besson movies are very good! Like 5th element, first 2 transporters, and others.
A lot of people (including me) get the wrong idea about Tony at first. He kept Leon's money for him, like he said, and he'll look after the money for Matilda. He also gave Matilda some tough love at the end - the stern talking to that she needed, about reality.
I think Tony and Leon's relationship was intended to show the theme of honour and loyalty among criminals. Leon is the last person Tony would ever want to screw over or piss off because of his line of work and how good he was at it. Tony probably was looking out for Leon in his own way.
I disagree, it's heavily implied that he doesn't want to give Leon's money to either of them and it never shows or even hints that he has any intention to give it to Matilda, only that he'll keep it "for her". He obviously cared about Leon, after working together for possibly a couple decades Tony might see Leon like a nephew but when it came to the money he was conniving, and IMO just taking advantage of Leon's simple nature.

Natalie Portman was 13 when she made this movie. A couple years later she made a more obscure, but amazing movie called Beautiful Girls. She was just as unique at 15. Another obscure movie was Garden State where she out-classed the entire cast.
The actor of Leon is French and has been in many French and English movies alike. He's a very talented actor and I keep forgetting Gary Oldman is the main bad guy here oops. Any way very violent movie but I like it none the less. Luc's movies are usualy violent like this and I think this was my first movie of his that I saw...that or the Fith Element not sure. He also directs the original movie of Nikita which was very violent and all in French and also the inspiration for the tv shows as well.
Congratulations Mary. All the best to you. Men seem to have more of an issue with their relationship than women do these days, which is fascinating to me. Personally, I think it’s 100% clear that Leon’s intentions are pure, even though Mathilda’s emotions are, well, a bit grownup for her age. This belongs to a very short list of superbly nuanced juvenile performances that also includes Christina Ricci in The Addams Family, particularly the second one, Kirsten Dunst in Interview With The Vampire and Tatum O’Neil in the criminally overlooked masterpiece Paper Moon. I recommend the first 2 mostly for those performances, but I recommend Paper Moon for much more than that, like this film.
Brilliant comment. I’ve loved this film since I was a teenage girl and can completely empathise with where Mathilda is coming from. Leon’s love and intentions were pure.
There's also Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver, which Leon borrows from.
Really fantastic unique movie. Luc Besson is on another level. I highly recommand you "La Femme Nikita" by the same director. Very emotional as well about a female hitman.
if you research this film you will find that the original french version actually had the matilda as an advisor, and that its based on a true story.
Also Natalie Portman actually did the impression of Marilyn durring her audition. That was what sold her to the director.
The song "Shape of My Heart" by Sting is so perfect for this movie. I recommend you listen to the song at least once on a nice system.
I read somewhere else that the shape of my heart wasn't the original song choice but they changed their minds at the last minute.
The ending track was another Sting song called..The experience of love. Oddly enough, they used it in a James Bond movie instead.
If you listen to it, it goes perfectly well with the Leon movie and I wish they had used that song instead.
@@glyndoh2206 I didn't know that. I just heard that other song. I really much prefer The Shape Of My Heart. The vocals are much more powerful. Shadie Presley's reaction to Leon takes the cake. You can hear parts of the song at the end of her reaction. It seems to go better with the movie.

Gary Oldman was the lead detective in this. You might want to look at his resume. He's been in a ton of movies and is just a great actor. One of the best, in my opinion. You've probably already reacted to some of his movies and not realized it because he just blends in.

The role of Tony is written great. Everyone - including me - expects he is cheating on Leon with his money. Yet we have no proof he isn't really just keeping the money for him. And taking into account, that Leon is portrayed in a way we can assume he's not really good with such stuff (not saying he is stupid, but he has his quirks), it could very well be that Toni is just keeping it for him, without ill intentions.

I‘m not sure if you watched the theatrical version or the director’s cut. The director’s cut is almost half an hour longer, and features mostly more of the relationship between Leon and Matilda.
Many other reactors feel VERY akward about those scenes…
If this wasn’t the director’s cut you should watch it sometime, and maybe you’ll get a totally different movie experience out of it.
She did watch the director's cut. A lot of scenes in this reaction are exclusive to the DC.
It's mostly non-Europeans who feel awkward about those scenes between Leon and Mathilda, and I've always found it odd... to me it's quite clear that Mathilda is just infatuated with Leon (because he's a non-asshole male who doesn't bully her like her dad) and maybe doesn't differentiate between platonic and romantic love. Leon clearly sticks to his boundaries too, which is why it's so odd to see so many (especially American) reaction channels be so extremely awkward about their bond.
@@stobe187 From a detached and narrative perspective, this is all true... But on the flip side, (Director) Luc Besson's relationship history just feeds back into it and colours it in a way that is definitely less wholesome and more troubling.
It means you go from "OK, that's really uncomfortable, but I see what it's going for" right back around to "OK, that's REALLY uncomfortable" again.
This was the directors cut. In the the theatrical we don't see her joining him on a job.

I completely agree. Portman's character has a crush. Nothing unusual about that at all, particularly when you factor in the family dynamics and home situation , typical elements of kids wanting to grow up or be adults faster. Leon does indeed maintain his boundaries even if there is a suggestion of Mathilde trying to suggest anything else. I think this is a brilliant film, and it remains one of my favourites.

There are a lot of other great Jean Reno movies, The Visitors, Ronin, Wasabi, Witch Way Love, The Crimsom Rivers, and many more
I remember seeing this back in 94 or 95 and thinking "holy shit, that little girl was incredible". I was delighted to see her career take off the way it did. Siskel and Ebert hated this movie, they thought it was just unrealistic style over substance. Considering how many people adore this movie I think they were off the mark on that one.

It's a comedy about a medieval knight who gets sent to present day due to a witches curse and is trying to get back to the past.
It is in French, but is very funny.
