  • A scratch built model of a Beam Engine, built almost entirely from scratch and without drawings, about 6 months to build, approx 500 hours, mostly head scratching as I slowly worked out how to build it. The only bits not made were the cast iron flywheel, and the nuts 'n bolts, the rest is made from raw metal stock. - Enjoy :) #BeamEngine #modelengineering

      Hi John Crawford, I spent many hours building this machine, but the last 5 or 6 hours running it in were the most mesmerising, I didn't miss a second, and enjoy every moment of it running now

    In one words... superb! Either for the realisation and the video, a pleasure to see. Great precision machining and without drawings, it make ordinary (and perhaps expert) hobbyist jaleaous but so admirative !

    Thank you for the beautiful video of your steam beam engine. You have provided proof that you do not need castings. Now I am working on a design that is slightly larger, completely in metric and without the BA screws and bolts. The bore is 46 mm and stroke length 100 mm. Hopefully, making it will start at the end of next year. For flywheel I will start from a cast iron disc of 280mm. It will then be a new model instead of all Stuart models ...
    Best regards

      @@AdeSwash You'd think it's a model engine maker's paradise here (FL) weather- wise, but man, I can only get in about 2 hours shop time at best during summer, it can reach 37 C or more in short order, worse for me my garage shop overhead door faces East, so no relief. But still...

    Ade, I just love this engine. I am building one half this size. Do you find it easier or preferable building on a larger scale. I wanted to build on a similar scale to yours but could not find a large enough Flywheel. I could cast one in aluminium but I don't think it would be weighty enough.

    • @AdeSwash
      @AdeSwash  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Berty, I bought the flywheel about a year before I started the engine, so the dimensions were all based from that for scale, I dont really have a preference to large or small, I just build to suit what I am making, obviously, the smaller it gets, the more precision is required. Best Regards. Ade

    Hi Ade, I’m building a copy, just had to, looks so good. Half way there, just on the cylinder….
    I have a few questions, if you can help - what clearance do you put between the top of the piston and the cylinder cover when at TDC/BDC?
    Did you put a liner in the cylinder? What you use for piston rings?
    I was think about putting no liner in and just o-rings for piston rings as I only foresee it ever running on air - just wondering what you did.
    Cheers, love the channel.

    • @AdeSwash
      @AdeSwash  Рік тому

      Hi Tanks Jago, there is no liner, and it has o rings as you say as it only runs on air also. I cant remember what the clearance distance was without taking it apart but probably 3 or 4mm. Regards Ade

      @@AdeSwash Sound advice Ade but luckily my father in law is an amazing engineer so I’m getting assistance where required. Always been one to try to run before I could walk, mind you 😀

    • @AdeSwash
      @AdeSwash  3 роки тому

      @@mickhaden5888 Hi again Mick, the Stuart Beam Engine can be bought for about £375 as an unmachined kit, the £1200 you talk of is for a finished model, although my engine probably cost about £100 (or less) in materials, and many, many hours of making. I had a fellow model engineer contact me last year who had build an almost identical version of my big-beam, he sent me photos and a vid of it running beautifully, he simply worked from my video, and figured out approximate dimentions based on the scale from the 10" flywheel and it was beautiful, the point I am making is that you dont need any drawings to follow, with scratch build models you start with your first component (in my case the beam) then you just make the next part to suit, I sometimes make wooden 'mock-ups' as these can be quickly and easily made from scrap timber, just to get a feel for the dimensions and aesthetics, then use that to guide you into the metal fab and machining, so I am sure you can work with your father in law and design and build you own version of a model beam engine. All the best, Ade
