- Spearfishing a new spot turned out to be a success! This fish had been on my list of new fish to target for a while so it was great that all the spot research and effort going out there paid off! Halibut next!
Check out all the gear I use for my adventures at: www.amazon.com...
Been diving fo over 30 years in Sonoma county, Monterey Bay and the Channel Islands. We expect seals on every dive- no one's ever been bit but watch out if you have bleeding fish on a hoop; then they won't be shy!
I have never had them team up and charge like that though! It was odd!
Verm on a spear is crazy, good stuff bro. Used to fish that spot all the time from shore and got some PBs back in the day ... now rangers closed it off completely and will yell at you if you try to fish on the rocks
Have you or any of your friends had to deal with sea sickness while spearfishing? It’s been happening to me and I’m trying to find the best way to prevent it or overcome it. Thanks.
thats my old stomping grounds diving for abalone when it was legal and no stairs , 4 years i cut my teeth just south of that rock island , on the point below the lighthouse there are octopus caves and we always got a ling cod there , have always wondered about halibut on that north of the light house beach area but it feels real sharky i only went there once to a rocky mount you cant see when its calm and we all got rock scallops
Yeah I know a few divers that say that spot is very shaky! I'm surprised you were getting abalone this far south! Ab diving is actually how I got into spearfishing back in 2016!
I know exactly where you are, dove there twice, first time I was a noob and could not believe there was 15ft viz there. Second time a 2000lb elephant seal was there, scared the heck out of us! Haha been fishing there since I was a kid, lots of underwater life 💯
Did you have any luck there? It seemed like structure was pretty hard to find!
Great video man - I check my 6 often every time I dive that spot, its quite sharky haha. But when conditions line up its amazing pickings forsure.
Always dive with a shark shield!
Great video! Nice fish! That visibility looks like where I like to dive (Sonoma coast)
Thanks man! Yeah vis wasn’t too great!
Pescadero, Nice.
Nope
😉
Nice work!
Thanks Aaron!
Those were not seals, they were sea lions. I once got bothered by a sea lion in San Benitos islands. He was in my face as soon as I got off the boat and kept buzzing me. I finally shot him with a tip protector over my spear, so he just got a bump. He split and I did not see him again.
Yeah I mix up the wording all the time 😂
You shot him with what size gun?!?! Fully loaded bands??
@@HideshiIzu Riffe Islander. Probably just one band, but I don't remember exactly, it was years ago. I had a wooden block over the tip.
Oh yeah, those guys can get aggressive for sure! Even down here in the Sea of Cortez...
Where would you recommend getting some gear, thinking about getting into spear fishing?!

Check this link out... I highly recommend every piece of gear on it
Man, the reduced visibility and the seal presence would have had me nervous about sharks. I’d be worn out in no time.
I always dive with a shark shield man! I’ve had plenty of kayakers pass me by while I’m in the water and tell me they just saw a shark! I prefer to not think about it too much but every time I shoot a fish I stay on high alert!
@@HideshiIzu I used to live on the WC (back in the late 80s) and spearfished from Leo Carillo to Dana Point. Never saw a GW. Now I spearfish Florida and the Gulf. Everything is SO different. But the visibility can be mind blowing at times. (Not always) Gin clear. Lots of sharks: mostly Bulls, Lemons, Blacktips, Spinners, and Reefs. I don’t get too nervous until the visibility is low. Then I move on, or go do something else.
Is this in Mendocino?
Maybe
Nvm its in pescadero
Gotta watch out it could’ve been a yellow eye easily and you would’ve been in trouble.
Yeah it was a vermillion tho
