Getting my 18,17,10 boys and my 8 year old girl into to it spearfishing. Just got them snorkeling gear. 2 youngest has fins but not my 2 oldest. We live in stockton. Looking forward for more valuable pointers maybe in person as well. Be safe.

Kudos to you for doing the smart thing. I recommend finding and hitting people up on Instagram, Facebook groups, or Reddit. You’ll have more success if you think of it like you are a beginner and they are going to dedicate time and effort into teaching and showing you spots and you have to be able to offer something in exchange too
@youtubeuser3182 is 100% spot on. I've had luck finding people on Facebook groups, but the local clubs are much more worth the effort. If you're in LA, come to the fathomier meetings and I'll go dive some deep shit with you!

Just for the record temps in socal rarely get anywhere near 80 degrees. 70 is high. most days are in the 60s even in summers.

Do I need a reel for my spear gun or no is there a alternative for a reel?
You can use a float and a float line!

I prefer actually prefer pole spears with slip tips. I’ve always felt a spear gun is cheating but that’s just me.
Using scuba tanks is cheating
