[Subscriber Special] To Duna And Back in 0.17 - KSP

- I usually use a lot of maneuver nodes in my videos to plan out all the gravity assists and whatnot, but today we celebrate a special moment as I have 30,000 subscribers! No maneuver nodes will be used as I try to get to Duna and back... with a nostalgic twist!

Note that in this old version of KSP there was no re-entry heating, but the aerodynamics were so different that getting into Kerbin orbit required 1km/s of extra delta-V!

Y'all little whippersnappers! Why, I remember back when there t'weren't no planets, t'weren't no Mun, the sun was nuttin but a SKYbox, and ol' Kerbin... well she dinnah even ROTATE! Yea, Kerbin was a salty ol' girl back then... didn't want nobody landin' on her dark side, hehehe, or she'd blow you right up! That must have been, oh... le'ssee... back in summer of 0.0.08, I think it t'was. Those were the good ol' days, kids, the good ol' days, a'right. You wanted to get your sorry ass up inna orbit without none of those, there, fancy GIZZmos and DOOhickeys like maps o' maneuver nodes o' whatnot, you had to pick up a calculatah and a stopwatch! Yes. A good ol' fashion stop-ee-watch! Ha ha! There just plumb wadn't no other way. Yessirree, and the atmosphere was THICK back then, too, like gramma's best pea-soup. Getting up into orbit and back 'gin was like goin' to school in the blowin' snow and screamin' wind and uphill BOTH ways. Both ways! Ain't got no landin' struts, son... we had to use FINS. Yes, that's right. Mul-tai-task-ihn just like ol' Jeb would'a wanted us to!
Why? Pfft. WHY?! T'was no science up there, son, no research t'be done, no funds o' presTEEGE... oh nothin' like that. We did it because we were men. 'Cause the sky... she called to us and we hadda answer. Yessir. We strapped a bunch'o boosters to our heels, reached up, an' touched the face o' God... and there t'weren't nothin' between us an' infinity. Just sittin' in my tin can in silence, watch the ol' girl spinnin' down below your feet, hope there's ennuff juice in the tank t'get'chu back home. Never felt mor' alive in all a m'life, son. Oh, I tell you that. Face o' God. Those were the days an' nights that made us.

Ye ol' bag from tha good ol' days are goddamned right, back in 0.0.08 ye whippernsappers could've seen tha good stuff, now with the GADgets 'n tha Sciency things y'all don't even need t'do anythin' these days.

Yonkage Joined the game in 0.18.2, and I have loved it since, I even downloaded the really old versions like you remember.
Oh those good old days. I still can not bring myself to use any pilot but Jeb. If I do not have Jeb I use a probe. I wonder if the newer players have anywhere near the connection we of the early days have to Jeb, Bill, and Bob.

To finally prove your superhuman skills in KSP I suggest an Ultimate challenge: travel to Duna & back without nodes, while using only boosters, carrying an asteroid on one fuel tank.
In a truck.
After that you can pretty much travel the world as a living Jesus.
I think that's a little too much... Even for someone like him.

wow nice! Best I an do without MV nodes is the mun lol. Still, it's quite a useful skill since I can get flyby science early on, without upgrading the tracking station!

Stanley Dodds You needed an extra 1km/s of delta-V to get to orbit though :P
I once got to laythe with no nodes. Ok well I actually got into a retrograde orbit of Jool and ended up slingshotting around laythe into a highly eliptical solar orbit that went below the orbit of Moho but has an orbital period of 30 years. Same thing right?

I'm at 2 year and 60 days, and the next Duna window is a 3 year and 300 days (around that).
Should I time warp one year, or use gravity assist (I don't have an Eve window neither) ? Or do other contracts ?

Doing this with only a level one tracking station is quite easy. Sure it's hard with TACLS or something, buts it's not that difficult.
