- More families plan to join a lawsuit against Houston-based Surrogacy Escrow Account Management LLC, or SEAM-a company owned by Dominique Side, which is accused of defrauding intended parents out of millions, KPRC 2 has learned.
Forget the law suits. There should be a warrant out for this woman's arrest for multiple crimes.

I knew a woman who was a surrogate a few times and had a pretty good experience. I'm a bit naive, but why would you even envolve a third party? Just keep the money in a savings account and then pay the surrogate. Hopefully the lady that disappeared with the money is held accountable.
Trust issues. The escrow account is a holder of the funds to insure the parties get paid. They are supposed to do exactly that with an escrow account. It divvies out payments and is there to make sure the payments go out. They are supposed to be trust holders of agreed upon money but from the looks of it, the owner of the escrow accounts stole, literally stole the money for her own personal gain. So not only did this escrow woman take from the payee, she took it from the person who was supposed to get paid.
Escrow accounts exist as a safe way to ensure both parties in a legally binding transaction do their part. It is most often used in real estate transactions to ensure the buyer shows good faith by depositing the money into escrow. The escrow company will release the funds to the seller when all forms are signed and keys are handed over. In a rental dispute in housing court, to show good faith and intent to pay rent, a tenant should put rent money into an escrow account while a judge decides what to do. If a landlord needs to take action, such as making necessary repairs to make a place habitable, until the landlord proves to the judge they have made the repairs, they will not receive the rent. The whole point of escrow accounts is that a neutral third party can say Party A has deposited the money and Party B will get the money when the product or services are rendered in full. So it is a huge blow to everyone and breach of trust when the escrow company is the one that scams everyone.

There have been issues with that too. Funds run out and sometimes people are dishonest as well. An escrow fund is supposed to have majority of the money to make sure the surrogates get paid and in a timely manner. If from a personal account, what if the money you intended to use ran out or the parents are just deciding to withhold payment for whatever reason? Going through an escrow also usually means a lawyer was involved
Because a company will do background checks and check both people out and make sure home studies are done and handle a lot of things for both sides. And they handle the legal side too and they hold money and make sure everything is on the up and up
Honestly, stories like this help me to better understand why many countries have banned surrogacy. There are just too many opportunities for abuse, and pregnancy is so expensive and high-risk as it is.

But other than that it's just horrifically grim, it's just rich people exploiting the poor. A woman getting a child without the whole mother experience. A poor woman that goes through all the motions of becoming a mother, having a child growing inside of her etc. Giving birth to it, only for it to immediately be taken away for her to never be able to see again. It's revolting. And it's even worse when the egg is from the surrogate mother, because now she's not only the one that grew the baby in her body, it's literally her baby and it's going to get ripped away. Many of these young women don't even realize what they're getting into and often don't really want to give up the baby anymore when it comes time too
@@3choblast3r4 I just feel like there are literally millions of children who are orphaned, ill-cared-for, etc. If you're rich enough to pay a surrogate, you're rich enough to adopt a kid from one of those hell hole orphanages in third-world countries that operate more like prisons than a place for children. There are countries were if a baby is deemed bad luck, it will literally be dumped in the nearest landfill. Many of these countries don't have the resources to care for these unwanted children. Everyone is always pushing adoption as the perfect option, and I will admit that it also has its problems, but if you really want a baby that badly, consider adopting one that is already here and in need of a loving home.

I understand why a women would do surrogacy to help another family out, but go thru attorney not an agency. Friend did this 2 times over 10 years ago. Fees were family paid all lawyer and medical fees for the surrogate and a set fee to carry the baby. Even then they have to adopt the baby legally in our state.
Risky business regardless if the surrogate does not want to relinquish baby after birth, which happens.

Growing up, I've always wanted to adopt (a baby or toddler) and as i got older my baby fever became stronger (I'm 30 now) i started looking into adoption later in life & was looking into surrogacy, just browsing, but didn't know where to start and one of my concerns were of the mother didn't want to relinquish the child after birth!

My husband and I are looking into adoption right now and the cost for using an adoption agency seems to run $40,000-$50,000, just for the agency fees. Then there are home study fees that are about $1,500, and adoption lawyer fees that can cost anywhere from $1,000-$6,000. We’re also looking into foster to adopt. We’ve done foster care, and with reunification being the goal of foster care, fostering to adopt isn’t always guaranteed either, so it’s definitely a difficult journey either way.

The contract between the surrogate and the parents is still in full effect, neither of those parties failed to uphold their end. I am sure it would have been a pain to accomplish but they are both covered.

Unlike adoption, this is the biological child of one or both “intended” parents the vast majority of the time. The parents just have a live “incubator” standing in when the mom can’t carry her baby for some reason. Adoption on the other hand… that IS human trafficking by any and every definition.

And it's only going to get worse with some states and their laws. I personally have heard too many horror stories to ever consider adoption, unless it was a family member in dire need. I think we're heading back to the days of grandparents stuck with raising two generations of 'siblings' to cover 'mistakes'.

Why would anyone use a private company to get a baby?!? All that money! They're BUYING that precious child! We adopted a baby. We received her when she was 5 days old. Soon, she will be 30 yrs old. We did NOT buy her. The agency only charged us what was needed to pay for filings, a small fee to pay social worker, etc. It was nowhere near $30,000! Adoption has become a business. 😢

You did buy her. What do ou think all of the adoption fees were for? The adoption process isn't free. You paying for the mother's care, lawyers, court filing fees, the agency's fees, etc. Private adoption costs about $50k these days. It isn't free. So essentially, you are buying a baby. I know it sounds harsh, but that is the reality. Adoption should be free.
Do NOT judge people who go through the surrogacy process instead of adoption. You have no idea what drives other people and your judgment is just plain wrong. Some people want a genetic link to their child for many many valid reasons. Others try the adoption process and it doesn’t pan out for them. Dismissing surrogacy as “buying” a baby is just gross and no one needs that high horse attitude.
