- Let's look at the Single Barrel checklist. Good proof? Yep, this one is 100 proof, check. Good price? Got this one for $36, not bad at all. Good palate, finish, mouthfeel? Check. Interesting flavors to unpack? Check again. Plus, with the high rye content of this Bourbon, this can be a bridge for many who are trying to get into rye whiskey.

This was actually one of my gateways into bourbon. Saw it on the shelf early into my whiskey journey and gave it a try. At that time (2015) I drank it on ice and enjoyed it so much I wanted to learn more about bourbon and whiskey in general.
Every time my family does a blind tasting with some of the higher end allocated bourbons, most people choose this as the favorite :)
That’s awesome i tried four roses years ago but it was pretty light to me and turned me off, so i finally picked up the single barrel and i will try it today. side note, your not slapping ice in your cocktail anymore are ya? lol
My gateway to bourbon. Nearly 10 years later, dozens of other bourbons, and I struggle to find anything I like more. Only two whiskeys come to mind I like as well… The Henry McKenna 10 year bottled in bond, and a Russell’s Reserve 10 year store pick I picked up at at Total Wine in Dallas.
45.00 were I’m at. And worth it. I love 4 roses 🌹
Agreed. $45-50 in California. But still worth it.
This was my 2nd bourbon I tried, after WT101. After trying more since, I have come to really appreciate the unique-ness of both of them.
It’s always good to revisit the available go-to daily-drinker bottles that everyone overlooks while they’re way too focused on limited editions and hunting allocated stuff.
The gateway to rye! Indeed, that’s a gate worth going through! Well done, guys!
I was a fan of the small batch select was my first four roses and I haven't been disappointed with their 100+ proofs yet. Love your videos very informative, light hearted, and enjoyable to watch!
Four Roses SiB was the first step to my love of high rye bourbon. Excellent review. I would love to see more like these. Cheers Chad and Sara!
Four roses single barrel has always been my favorite available on the shelf "Gateway to Rye" for the money (45ish). Seems like I always have a bottle in my cabinet next to rare breed. Glad to see you talk about it, can't always fine a pick of it.
How crazy. I bought a bottle today and come home and see this video . I’ll definitely give it a thumbs up 👍🥃
Completely agree that 4 Roses SiB is easy to overlook, but then you have it again and darn, that’s good gateway to rye stuff. Recently blinded it vs Small Batch Select and picked the latter (sigh, more $), but they’re both excellent IMO.
I love Rye's so I will def buy a bottle of this to try. Thats the beauty of bourbon hobby. Trying different bottles. Thanks for the great vid! BTW, thank you Sara for loving the Pikesville. Its my favorite Rye so far and all thanks to you!
It’s unbelievable. I just got this bottle today Perfect timing for the video👍 thank you 😊
Me too
Serendipity, baby!
I tried it for the first time 2 weeks ago when a bought a bottle, now it's one of my favorites. I don't find the flavors as intense as other bourbons that I like, but it's tasty and sweet and the finish is wonderful.
I'm beyond the gate! Bought one of these about 10 days ago, need to taste again after this great review.
Such a great whiskey for old fashioneds. Still very friendly to drink neat. As a fan of rye whiskey I’d say this is up there with the best!
So glad you guys decided to visit the gateway to rye, especially since it's so darn delicious.
One of my favorites. I finished mine the other day, and it’s one that lasted me the longest because I didn’t want it to end.
The gateway to rye!!!! Excellent review that intrigued me enough to buy a bottle. Well I must say....thank you it is delicious.
Was in Louisville KY and at the bar at Guy Fieri's Restaurant in 4th St Live and this is what the bartender was using for his bourbon base drinks (old fashion's etc) First time I can say I enjoyed an old fashioned. He asked if I had a preference, and I told him Dealer's Choice. Also Gateway into Rye !!
The high rye is amazing in an old fashioned!
The gateway to rye! I am excited to try this bottle as it is sitting at home!
Simply put....just a damn good bourbon. Smooth, flavorful, easy drinker....bought a bottle for New Year's & had a few glasses neat, backed up with ice water. Delicious.😎
Four Roses Single Barrel, A Gateway to Rye. We bought one of these earlier this year but hadn't opened it yet so we uncorked ours along with you. I really love it and would buy one again.
Gateway to Rye. I love these $40-$45 (in CA) off-the-shelf 4R Sib’s. They are complex for a 100 proofer, delicious, and with a long finish, and nobody ever talks about them. Such an underrated bourbon.
Great episode, I might have to pick up a bottle. I have had a pour or 2 at the bar but have slept on the bottle because in my area you can often find higher proof bourbons and ryes for around the same price if not cheaper.
This has become my favorite bourbon since trying this several months ago. It is a little scarce where I live but I get two bottles when I find it. Highly recommend this one.
One of my absolute favourites
I still remember when a friend brought a bottle of 4R single barrel to party thanksgiving a few years back. First time I had anything above 'standard' from them and first time I really took them serious. Great pour.
Great video. While it’s quite hard to track down all the recipes, you can still have fun with just the OBSV single barrels by grabbing some of different tiers. A tier 1 and 6 have different qualities. Cheers.
A great "Gateway to rye", and one of my favorite's in general.
Thanks for the review! This was at one point my favorite bourbon. Then I stopped drinking it for no good reason. Now my favorite is Smoke Wagon, another gateway to rye at 36%. I went back to this recently and I’m wondering why I don’t drink it more often.
Four Roses makes a fine product. definitely a gateway to rye!!
Need to look for Four Roses. I’ve already crossed the “gateway to rye” and feel like this would be a welcomed compliment.
That was a good dinner! We need to get to a few more of those this year. Cheers!
I always have a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel on my shelf. It's a solid bourbon though some might find it a bit too smooth. Thanks for reminding me that I need to pick up another bottle in the next month of two.
Such a nice bourbon. Actually my real gateway to loving rye was seeing Irene Tan at Canterbury Liquors in Canterbury, CT and trying a 125 proof Putnam Rye Cask Strength. Just absolutely fantastic stuff!
Bought my first bottle of Four Roses SB about a month ago. I get a delicious dusty cocoa taste on the finish. For the money, this has to be the most complex and tasty bourbon out there. I killed that bottle just a few days ago, and this review has me needing another.
Just grabbed a bottle of this. My first bourbon. (Not counting teenage years jack daniels and jim beams😂😅) I’ve enjoyed scotch for a number of years now but bourbon is a mystery to me. I went to grab a Highland Park Cask Strength bottle as a christmas present for my self and got the single barrel Four Roses at the same time. Made it a mission to learn to find the flavours in this bourbon through drinking that bottle.
Love the Four Roses small batch, but have had very good single barrels as well. For 36 I'd get single every time, but it's over 50 in my neck of the woods. At that price point it's got more serious competition. Still fantastic and absolute steal at the price you guys are able to get it.......especially a store pick.
I tried this for the first time recently and I love it! Definitely a favorite now. It's a great deal for the flavor, price, proof, and availability. #GatewayToRye
Four roses single barrel and Wild turkey rare breed. My favourite quality to price bourbons. Cheers y'all 🥃🇨🇦
This gateway to rye is delicious and fun . in general I feel like both this and 4R Sm B Sel. are so underrated !
I'm all about the rye and high rye bourbon. David Nicholson Reserve is one of my favorite high rye bourbons. Gateway to rye, ok. My gateway was diving right in on a Leopold Bros. Maryland Style Rye, which I highly recommend.
Green apple flowery goodness for me. I did not get the mint in the past I believe, but you are right. And gateways are important ;) cheers
When I first got this I wasn't sure as to whether or not I approved of it. But once the bottle opened up I got new flavors and it instantly sold me on it. The rest of the bottle was amazing. It tastes like a fancy WT 101 which is already my go to bourbon. I had to recommend it to a friend who also likes the 101 and said it was great.
By far one of my favorite bottles.. I actually prefer the flavor of 4R SiB to WT RB. The funniest part about "Gateway to rye" is that this has been one of my favorites for a while now and I still don't really like ryes that much...
i love four roses single barrel, it feels like the perfect gateway to rye
4R SB is one of my favorites.
Great stuff... and I love straight rye so I've already gone through the gate. :-)
Gateway to rye! I still need to try this bottle.
So I usually take rye over bourbon and the way you described this makes me really want to try it. I've definitely slept on it for other things
Just picked up a bottle of this at my local Walmart here in Arizona for $41. I'll try it later this afternoon.
So, I was just searching for info on this bottle. And here we get a video.
Four Roses Single Barrel is a favorite of mine! I admit I might like the Four Roses Small Batch Select just as much, but the price on that keeps me from being able to have it on my shelf very often. I am also VERY interested in some of the special Private Single Barrels that I've heard about. Unlikely I will be able to sample one of those, but I am happy to always have the standard Single Barrel in my collection. My gateway to Rye was very likely Wild Turkey. 🖖😎🥃
the gateway to rye
👍👍! Gateway to rye! Nice.
Great bourbon at a great price. Shhhhh Let others search for Blanton's! I love all of their bourbons. I find 4 Roses benefits from some air. Great video!!
Gateway to rye! Great bottle!
This is a really solid bottle for the price and availability. I often recommend this one to people
Man I feel like it’s better than the small batch select too and heating it’s age makes it crazier. I think I’m gonna stop at the gateway though. Pretty sure rye’s not for me. Thanks for the videos guys
The OBS* mashbill is the Gateway to Rye, but I still like the OES* recipe
I always thought it was the gateway to rye. 😜🥃
Been dying to get my hands on this bottle
Got the OESQ liquor Barn pick haven’t tried it yet but I love the Regular single barrel bottles I’ve had.
Four Roses Single Barrel (the Gateway to Rye) hasn't tempted me to cross over to rye bourbon--yet. It's just not my jam, and I still prefer both of the Small Batch brands, but as the fall foliage changes and we turn the clocks back, maybe I'll sit on the porch one more time and have a few sips of this stuff. Thanks, kids.
I have honestly been looking for a gateway to Rye. 🥃
The Gateway to Rye!
$36!?!?!?! So cheap! This guy is $54 for me all day.
Yeah, it's $50 by me. There are more desirable options for that amount and less.
Same
I'm new to whisky drinking but i do have quite a few now and this was my first bourbon,i didnt like it at first but i have to say it is actually nice
I smell and taste Chocolate! Just open one tonight, Since you reveiwed it I thought I would try
I’m not a big fan of 4 roses small batch, but I do enjoy a bottle of their single barrel and always keep one on hand.
The gateway to rye!
The gateway to RYE!🥃
Nice review, thanks. What unicorn planet is it where it goes for $36? NY burbs - $47 to $55
I love you, man... I mean... you guys are great! Rateway to Gye.. ha!
The gateway to Rye
Love this and Wild Turkey 101! I didn’t like the only Rye I did try though, Piggyback 6 yr Rye. Are there any other Rye’s worth trying more in this (FR Single Barrel) wheelhouse?
Honestly, I feel like 7-9 yrs is the sweet spot for most bourbons. 10-12 can be hit or miss depending on where in the rick house it aged. You can get a real drying or tannic quality. Off the shelf 4R SiB is a really good pour that won't break the bank.
That's a good general rule, although some are better at making the old bourbon flourish. I also think the proof range is right for this, 100-110 seems to be a sweet spot for majority of products. Very easy to over heat on the higher proofs and you have to work your way up to them to fully enjoy them. I still have to have most barrel proofs on the rocks if it's a first pour of the evening in order to enjoy it. Whereas you can give almost anyone a 100 proof and they won't get turned off by the alcohol content and still get 90% or so of the flavors the bourbon can produce.
@@donaldrobertson5747 Barrel Proof can be potent. I usually let my first pour breathe for 20 minutes or so first. Placebo or not, it seems to lessen that initial punch.
One of my favorites. But it's $50 in AL. But most liquor us more expensive because the state is in the liquor business.
Wow, it’s $50 in Denver! I might buy it more at $36.
Yep the gateway to rye indeed.
a gateway to rye
The gateway to rye.
The gateway to rye
I agree four roses single barrel was my second step bourbon after the jim beam white Label and Buffalo trace so it's definitely the gateway to rye. Unfortunately I used to be able to get it under $40 and now it's closer to $50 and primarily allocated so I don't normally pick it up. That doesn't mean it's not good it just means the law of diminishing returns plays into my decision.
I was at a store by me (So Cal) where the Single Barrel was less ($39) than the regular Small batch ($49) so go figure.
@@ChrisDominey yeah regional prices are so strange.
I tried this nine months ago now I ask is it the gateway to rye or backdoor to bourbon? I am primarily a scotch drinker but also do enjoy my ryes. Was never a big bourbon fan until I tried this one. With the high rye it hit all the notes for me. Ever since trying this, I have now warmed up to various bourbons and am developing a palate for them. Backdoor to Bourbon!!!!!!!!!!
Gateway to Rye!
I definitely don’t get any rye lol but a ton of soft fruit like pear or even fruit stripe bubblegum. I’m thinking I have the low rye recipe.Definitely the smoothes 100 proof i ever had so far.
The gateway to rye...
Wht rye's would you recommend starting out. I already have and enjoy AE but Wht others?
The GATEWAY to rye. Lol just grabbed my 1st bottle of the year and it was this 1 🙌🏽
