Four Roses is the pinnacle of what every distillery should model. They actually have attainable product that is top tier at every price point. So sick of allocated bourbons that started as $30 dollar bottles that became popular, then allocated, then 6X in price but the flavor doesn’t hold up to the new price.I’ll take Four Roses all day.
After this video, I'm going to buy a bottle or two. You are so right. I can go into store after store and find their product.
While I have limited experience with 4R, I couldn't agree with you more on the $30->$180 allocation crap. It's absolutely ridiculous. Even beyond the sad reality that people are making these bourbons status symbols, many of these status symbols aren't really all that good. 😄
I'd add michters to the list. they are the best at making and producing low to high level amazing products
I wouldn't say the entry-level Four Roses Yellow label is "top tier" for its $24 price point, but agree with the rest.
They were top shelf till they got bought out. Now they are bottom shelf.
4 Rose's Single Barrel was my first "expensive" bottle. I distinctly remember that first bottle because it was the first bourbon I tried with distinct flavor notes. I could isolate a sweet cinnamon nose and taste.
Nice video Kurt! In PA I used to be able to order online the single barrel at barrel strength. It was one of the best bourbons I’ve ever had! $89.99 . Wondering if you’ve ever had it
I have not 😟. I bet it’s spectacular!
Enjoyed this. Single barrel is in my heavy rotation.
May I suggest whiskey row OF?
Love the channel
Four Roses is my favorite 80 proof Bourbon. That's the one I recommend to all novice Bourbon drinkers.
Four Roses Single Barrel was my introduction into the bourbon world. In a way, kind of set me up for failure because it was SO good that all the other bourbons I've tried since have been lacking lol!
4 roses sb is awesome! It is also a high rye mash bill bourbon so maybe make your next bourbon purchase also a high rye. Ex, 1792 small batch or old grandad bib, 114. Just a thought.
@@slbdrinks I appreciate the suggestions! Definitely will give those a try as I accustom to the burn.
@@nessakin16Did you give them a try yet?
@@Super804boy My whiskey collection has grown significantly since last year. Made me realize I love a wide variety. I am still a huge fan of 4R products- the barrel strength selections are amazing! I recently picked up an OESQ JE66 that’s over 120 proof. The neck pour was hot but I suspect it will only get better. Highly recommend picking one of those up if you ever find one. ❤
@@Super804boysorry I responded from my alternate account but it’s nessakin haha
Are four roses bourbon worth the money? Seriously? An attainable line of great bourbons at a decent price. Even the select isn't that expensive for what you get.
Agreed!
Agreed. For the money, this is my go-to. The straight is an excellent mixer with Coke or a Julep.
Awesome idea to delve into one single distillery's offerings. When I go to the store I often wonder what the difference is in a distillery's small batch, vs single barrel, vs select, etc. This would make a great series!
Yes! We did do Old Forester as well if you haven’t seen that one and more coming!
Thanks for the Four Roses test! I definitely love the entry level and the small batch but now I am intrigued to keep going up the ladder all the way to the top. Four Roses definitely knows their bourbon. Thank you guys.
I was always a scotch guy. I had a client of mine talk me into trying a bottle of small batch and I was hooked. Got my hands on some allocated stuff , but its way too much of a hassle. Especially when you can find four roses everywhere. Great video gentleman 🥃Salud!
Great idea! Looking forward to the Wild Turkey edition
Me to!
@@slbdrinks me as well. From as much as I have been seeing you enjoy and talk up WT 101, it is definitely my next bottle.
I am not sure anyone does better with their blending than Four Roses. It's an excellent product, IMO.
The best!
Thought this was a great idea and would be fun to see with other distillers! Would be interesting to see if another distillery you found some where you were like definitely skip this bottle but this one is worth the money or the cheaper option is the one to stick with. I know 4 roses makes solid stuff so it's hard to find flaws. I will say I like the Small batch select for the viscosity the most, but problem is at $60 i'm getting Knob Creek Single Barrel Select (120proof), OF1920, or rare breed instead. I would absolutely love to try 4R SB Barrel Proof but I don't think i'll ever find that.
I agree 100%...a Knob Creek, WT/Russells, Michter's, Old Forester, etc, of the same style would be a winner...HELL, if you have enough BARDSTOWN bottles, I'd like to see that one, even though it's not as accessible as the others listed.
I like what your laying down here. I agree that I would purchase an OF 1920, KC sb over the 4 roses sbs. Cross reference other excellent buys to see if a particular bottle stands up.
@@slbdrinks Either way, showcasing other brand lineups like this one would be well received.
Elijah Craig too. 👌
Comparing the Knob Creeks could take at least a half hour, or more. 😂
IMO 4 Roses is severely overlooked. I can always count on them. I am always looking to try something different but the Small Batch is very underrated. I haven't tried the Select but I am interested in giving it a go.
Hope you love it!
Same here, Small batch is so underated.
4R SB has become my baseline all-rounder. Bulleit is my go-to mixer now, but, TBH, I would just as soon have 4R SB and Diet, and it is also super rocks or neat (Bulleit is kinda rough rocks)
@anita baaath yikes maybe you have them rona taste buds
@@anitabaaath5715you probably own a sig or an hk huh?
It's criminal that they chill filter the single barrel. It's bottled at 50%, so there is litteraly no need for it.
I agree. So why SBS takes the cake
I can actually find this bourbon, and it's relatively affordable. I just tried the single barrel and I liked it.
I picked up a 4 Roses single barrel (warehouse no. - HE)(Barrel no. 78-4Q) after the first pour from the neck I said I’ll never buy another , after it has rested a couple weeks it’s now one of my favorites. Great video!
With the high rye bourbon like 4 roses sb the neck pour can be quite bites! Excellent choice on your part to leave it sit and come back to it on another day!
Had all 4. My preference is actually the Single Barrel. Just scored 2 at Sam's for $30 each.
Even basic Four Roses bourbon is very good IMO, I'd even take it over Bulleit or something like that.
I liked it as well!
Their single barrel is my favorite burbon. Their regular four roses isn’t bad for the price. I know a lot of people taste different. I personally get a lot of cherry. Almost like a chocolate covered cherry
Also glad I’m not losing my mind lol. I also get a chocolate hint had the end of that single barrel
Excellent tasting notes! I love that chocolate note!
Great Video! It would be cool if you did this with Chattanooga Whiskey.
Oh ya that would be a nice lineup!
Yellow label is better than most
Small batch is $29.99 in MA. Hard to beat that for the value. Single barrel a bit more here than you quoted so unsure on that value.
Thank you for the video! I have to try some time. I checked that in Finland all those Four Roses options are readily available, except the most expensive one.
I have had all except the Small Batch Select and all are solid. Four Roses never disappoints 👍🏻🌹🌹🌹🌹🥃
No it does not!
The Small Batch Select is about $58 in my area. I picked one up to give it a try.
I dont think I have ever had any Four Rose's product that I didn't think was worth the money I paid for it.
Me either!
I’ve had every bottle of 4 Roses and I just can’t get into any of them.
Your not alone so just keep enjoying what you like!
I like this one, because I like Four Roses yellow label and Small Batch (I've not yet tried the other two). Scottish distilleries have their master blenders, but in my opinion the best blenders in the world are those who take 10 different bourbon recipes and make such good stuff with them.
I do have one question. What's the SLB Distillery on the sign hanging behind the bar? Do y'all have an actual distillery? 🙂
I'll always have a soft spot for Four Roses it started me on my whiskey journey. Great video guys!
Awesome! Thanks buddy!
My goto, especially for Old Fashions, ist the Four Roses Single Barrel. They didn't have it at store I was at, wo I got the Small Batch and was pleasantly surprised. I still prefer Single Barrel, but Select is great!
Four Rose’s is a fantastic and underrated. Single barrel is always on my bar. Thank you for the great videos!
Sooo good!
Talking about inflation
The glenfiddich 12 which I have as my goto easy priced drink is nearly 50 dollars at most of my liquor stores now in my area idk why.
I miss when it was cheaper. I feel like I'm getting goofed but I even crossed state lines and it was the same. Might be a NE US problem.
I need to check that in my area. 50.00 is a shame.
Yeah like I remember getting them easy for 30 - 35.
From south Korea , with love of bourbon , I appreciate your excellent briefing. Four Roses in not popular in S.K. and not imported by large companies but I love it.
Kurt, this is a good, quick run through the core of Four Roses. I haven't tried the entry or top offerings, but you've encouraged me to go there.
I'd love to see more of these videos. Certainly, the Wild Turkey core also deserves a full review.
Cheers, Kurt and Trenton!
Going to be a lot of fun!
Great video! I really enjoy the SBS for $65. I didn't at first, but as it has opened up I'm really liking it.
I only wish you guys touched on the private barrel program. Are those worth the extra money? Are there certain ones that are worth more (in your opinion of course) than others? I know the store near me has 10yr OBSK sitting on the shelf and they want $100 so I passed. I was willing to go $75 - $80, but $100 seems too steep. Maybe I'm missing something???
To be truthful I have never found a private barrel bottle. Trust me, I would LOVE to but have never even seen one.
I feel Four Roses doesn’t get enough love in UA-cam bourbon land. Solid bourbon at a solid price.
I bought my first bottle of Four Roses and I picked up the Small Batch Select. The tasting notes for me was caramel, sweet fruit almost candy like and some baking spices. I am totally impressed and when my bottle is finished off I definitely will buy it again.
Really glad you liked it!
Ought to make a Four Horsemen with all four Four Roses
Love 4 roses. 🌹 fantastic all the way through
The only one I haven't tried is the small batch select. They make some of the best bourbon available at any price. FRSB is my absolute favorite. Let's do this again with Old Forrester.
The sb is excellent!
Thank You. Very helpful in my bourbon journey. 🥃👌
Never met a Four Roses expression that I did not like, glad you share my thoughts and validated my point!
I’m glad we agree. You can’t go wrong with any thing Four Roses.
Hey there! As a beginning bourbon drinker (much more of a tequila guy), I just wanted to thank you for this channel! I've learned so much watching you guys and enjoy the chemistry between you and Trenton. As a newbie, I really love the Four Roses Small Batch! I look forward to "graduating" to the other varieties someday.
For a show idea, have you guys considered doing a blind test with someone you trust (a friend or family member) who's new to bourbon? I think it would be interesting (and entertaining) to see how their taste pallettes differ from those of experienced bourbon drinkers such as yourself. 😁
Several of my friends and I agree that the Single Barrel is better than the Small Batch Select.
I would also agree with that
I won’t argue with you there! I did enjoy my sbs pour but as mentioned in the video the sb gets replaced every several months.
I had always thought I would be a huge Four Roses fan due to their rye content (I am a big rye guy) but I've never really taken to it. (?)
I think Turkey & Makers would both be excellent studies.
Love those recommendations! What I have found with 4 roses is that some love it and others not so much. Stick to what you like!
The entry level Four Roses is one of my favorites...It is better than a lot of more expensive bourbons.
Would you say that this is a better deal than the entry lvl Makers Mark that I can get for $20 at wal mart ?
I like Four Roses better..Where I live you can't buy Makers Mark for $20..We can't buy hard liquor in any stores other then state controlled liquor stores.@@protoman2260
Some of the four roses are pretty good if you like the floral Aromas and taste
The only Four Roses that I've tried is Small Batch, and there is almost always a bottle in the cabinet. The SB Select will need a try. It seems that the brand is a good value and fine product.
Because of this video, a couple months back I bought the Single Barrel. FREAKING AWESOME!!!! and gone. So now Christmas time. I went and chose the Small Batch Select to unwrap on Christmas day. Thanks for everything you guys do and Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this distillery, too - especially, the Single Barrel.
When I consider moving up the price ladder, I think of it as cost per 2 oz pour. 750 ml = 25.4 fl oz. So, a regular bottle provides about 12 pours. A $24 bottle = $2 per pour, a $36 bottle = $3 per pour, a $48 bottle= $4 per pour, and a $60 bottle (my limit!) = $5 per pour. Helps to keep things in perspective. Whiskey is not cheap. Doubt many of your viewers approach it in this way, though.
Btw, in Jacksonville, we're seeing the Single Barrel at both Total Wine and Costco for $35.
35.00 is a great buy! That is a very unique way of keeping your costs in check but I applaud you for making the effort!
I like the 4Roses Single Barrel.....I think it's worth the price.... between $40-$45.. here in NYC metro.....
No doubt!
Really great idea! Loved the review. Looking forward to more distiller reviews. May I suggest Michter's as a candidate? I really love the Sour Mash (if you can find it).
Omg that one is sooo good! Spoiler alert, that bottle is coming up on a show soon!
Eh,... I could take it or leave it.
The single barrel stuff is usually pretty good, but there is generally other stuff in that price range that I would prefer considerably.
4R sits in a difficult spot,.... if you don't like high rye bourbon, then you're not going to like it,.. but if you do like high rye bourbons, there are other brands out there that do it much better. (Wild Turkey, MGP, Willett, etc...)
I think the single barrels are their best, but i think they are overshadowed by better companies given the prices. Small batch select is one of the only bottles ive ever poured straight down the drain. Wild turkey are also quality available whiskies and personally id take a wt 101 over every bottle in this video.
Four Roses has developed a specific flavor profile imo. There is no doubt some will love and others not so much. It’s not like a WT 101 which hits most of everyone’s sweet spot. I did like the lineup personally.
@@slbdrinks its all personal taste. I have no issues with 4 roses, they are just very love or hate
Just picked up a bottle of the single barrel. Also have the two lower priced bottles....I have not shelled out the $65.00 for the small batch select....???? That is a $22.00 increase from the single barrel...??? What are everyone's thoughts....is it worth $65.00 🤔
I would say it’s the choice of the consumer. If one really likes the small batch the upgrade to the select might be a great find. If you are very happy with the sb why mess with that.
I enjoy Four Roses! Really like this kind of show comparison
Thank you!
Love when you compare the same brands
I'll take Small Batch Select and the OBSV Single Barrel releases all day long. I've had their "fancy" stuff, and as far as bang for the buck goes, you can't beat OBSV SiB and SBS at the price it normally goes for. I will say, you do need to like a higher rye bourbon if you are looking at getting into these. A WT101 or Russels Reserve Single Barrel or 1920 they are not. They are much lighter and "delicate" and I find that they are a great warm weather pour (actually they are good anytime, but not being as heavy they are still nice when it's 104° outside). Their yellow label and Small Batch are low proof and weak to me... but I'm the first to admit I'm a proof hound. I rarely like anything (other than a few Irish pours) that are below 50% ABV.
Well said! The single barrel is awesome and a quintessential high rye bourbon imo.
Small Batch Select is my wife's favorite bourbon. For now at least!
i like the fact that their entry level is a mix of all their stuff. that already sets the tone. and then, this bourbon is good in every way you can drink it. mixed or not, this bourbon will shine. for me, for 20$ you can't beat that feeling. of course, for a real connaisseur, drinking it dry might be a touch "meh" but honestly, for 10$ more you have the single barrel and there, you have a nice experience. so once again, the pricing is soooo right with them that you can't be disappointed. this brand is part of a collection foundation. you can't pass on the value this brand has. that would be a shame.
thanks for the review.
I’m an old guy, and I remember when Four Roses was an underwhelming bargain brand to be avoided. How times have changed! Their single barrel can hold its own with many more expensive bottles.
This was excellent! I agree that small batch is almost impossible to beat at $35. I like the single barrel but at $50 that’s a pretty heavy lift for me. I try to stay under $40 except for the occasional splurge. I would love to see you do the same thing with Old Forrester. They have so many different offerings at so many different proof levels that it’s a bit overwhelming. I’ve only tasted the entry level 86 and the bottled in bond 100.
OF definitely has some great bottles, but blinding their entire line does sound like fun 🍻
Thank you! OF would be a great topic!
If in your area, Costco has 4 Roses SB for $38.99. Would also love to see the same with OF bottles!
@@butchcoolidge4448 wow! $39 at Costco?! It was on sale at Binny’s for 45 so I just picked up a bottle. It’s normally 50. I might have to get a Costco membership :-)
The small batch select is an excellent whiskey 🥃
Love the channel and quality info. Im a Rookie bourbon drinker and love learning. As much as I'd love to comment on something related to bourbon, I have to ask what music you're playing? I love jazz piano and your choice absolutely fit with the mood of drinking bourbon. Just curious. Thx guys!!!
Going to have to ask Trent that one. I think it’s just a light jazz track available to the public.
I'm new to whiskey and the depth of the subject... lol... but as I watch this video I'm sipping the entry level 4 roses... and I'm impressed!!! I literally just cracked the seal on it while watching!! I think it is going to be my new favorite whiskey outside of crown royal. I'm open to any suggestions on new juice ..lol ... thanks for the video!!
Glad you loved it!
I love small batch and single barrel four roses. I just can’t bring myself to pay $50-$60 for the small batch select though. Is it good enough for the money? I truly love Four Roses, they were my starter bourbon and I’ll forever be nostalgic with them. Growing up, my step father had a giant bottle (about 3 gallon size) of four roses he brought home while in the Vietnam war, and he’d put his pocket change in it. Such a great floral nose, and a quality bourbon.
Great story! That’s what bourbon is all about!
Just started drinking bourbon, never liked it when I was younger. Now my rates have changed tried the knob creek 120 proof and loved it. Bought the four roses single barrel and liked that one even more
I just opened my single barrel 4R. It was really nice.
Hello, I just found your channel. Liked this video. I had to subscribe. Your vids are short and to the point. I am 68 and brand new to drinking whiskey, I mean only a few months. What a great retirement hobby! I will be picking up your top two Four Roses.
Nick T
Thanks for joining us Nick and hope you are enjoying your retirement to the fullest!
Love 4 roses, have not had the chance to see the last one you had... just not in MT... Would be interested to see a fight between the same price points. 10-20, 20-30, so on... 5 or 6 in each fight and up to $100 or so... then the winner of each price point in the final.. see who is the top dog.. could be a series that would take you 6-7 shows... and only blind in the original flight... you know what goes into each one, but not what is in the specific glass. I want to do that with Bottle n Bond. I have 5 ready, want to pick up 2 more. Great vid guys.. Trenton, keep it up!!!
Thanks John! Always appreciate your recommendations!
I’m glad Four Roses is offering a quality product. I remember the brand in the 1980s as a bottom shelf “blended whisky” that was two-thirds vodka.
That is exactly what I thought. I have been avoiding that because of that. Looks like I will have to try them out, especially for the price point.
Have you done a Wild Turkey 🦃 version yet? Everyone is pretty silent about the Longbranch... But I love 101, Rare Breed & Russell 10 yr
Not yet but looking forward to it! Longbranch will be included.
I'm a completely new drinker and the Small Batch Select was randomly my second try for a bourbon. It's definitely a good taste.
I am currently drinking a 50/50 mix of four roses and Rebel yell both fairly cheap and good in my opinion.Good video fellas always interested to hear your thoughts.
Nice blend!
Love this. I love the small batch and single barrel. I can find the select. Thanks so much. 4 Roses is overlooked, but one of my favorites.
Hey Kurt and Trenton….could you please do a video explaining the various terms of bourbon….barrel proof vs. single barrel vs. small batch vs. full proof vs etc. I think that would be interesting. No one else on UA-cam has done a good, easy to understand video.
Great idea! Thanks for the idea!
Small Batch Select is only $50 by me right now. It's fantastic.
Nice! I have the first 2 Four Roses. The small batch is very good. The Yellow label I dont like it that much. Maybe next Wild Turkey
Good one to get into next!
A would like to know about. Jack danles. Line up. Practical gentle jank. I love this channel. How would you rate. Gentle man jack. Thank you.
That would be very interesting!
Sorry to say that I don't have a lot of experience with Four Roses. But I did pick up a bottle of the Small Batch Select at their distillery last September. I just haven't gotten around to opening it yet, but that will change soon.
Hope you love it!
Never had 4R before but my buddy said its pretty good so I picked up a Single Barrel Barrel Strength. I may open it tonight.
What a great bottle to have! Enjoy!
What has replaced Bourbon De Luxe? Read Jim Beam 😶 It was the Best, smooth, never a bad hangover! 😉💖
Honestly have never tried this one. Sounds very interesting.
I've had all of the Four Roses from this. Small Batch is my go to Four Roses. The single barrel I got nothing from & the Small Batch Select I got exactly the same as the Small Batch, 0 differences. So no the single barrel & SB Select are not worth it.
I appreciate your opinion!
Were you able to win a purchase of the Limited Small Batch release for this year, emails just went out, I will be making the 8hr drive!,
Unfortunately no. Holding out hope for a bottle. The only 4 roses le I have is the 2019 and love it! Hope yours is spectacular!
They do have some pretty bottles! I’m a fan of the Small Batch myself, just wished it was a few dollars cheaper than $35 for what they have at my local store.
That would be nice!
Great idea! I’ve really enjoyed everything from Four Roses. I have a bottle of SBS that I’m excited to crack.
I’d love to see you do the same thing with OF: 86, 100, 1910, 1920, Etc
Great suggestion!
What is OF? Old Forester or Old Fitzgerald?
@@drzarkov39 Old Forester.
Four roses fuckin rocks, goes down so smooth
Have you looked at Journeyman Distillery out of Three Oaks, MI. Not too far from your location, I think. Would love to hear your thoughts on their line!
I have been to Journeyman a couple times. I like a good majority of their spirits! I have only had 1 or 2 whiskeys that I didn’t care for. Great destination!
for some reason, Four Roses (all that I've tried) has never agreed with me
It’s a very specific profile. Quite a few love it but you are not alone that it’s not in your wheel house.
Possibly due to their high rye? I find many people who tend to prefer one general mashbill ratio over others.
You guys should do this blind and just make sure you explain to people that it's your peoples pallet not ours and it's what you guys like the best. The blind testing is so bad ass!!!! I'm 37 and name is mike. I think this is what people want to see....
Appreciate it Mike! Will consider it moving forward!
I know it can be scary, but I would love to see this blind.i just bought my first low end four roses,to see how it would size up to my other go to of wild turkey 101,and as of right now please with it.
Good to hear!
I’m going to Four Roses on Monday. I’ll let you know what my scientific research finds.
Awesome!
👍🏽….waiting on your Wild Turkey offerings. Rare Breed 🔥 is a winner
Love to do WT!
Four roses small batch select is one of the only bottles ive ever poured directly down the drain. All i got was prechewed spearmint gum off the bottom of a pizza place table and the syrup at the bottom of a fruit cocktail can and it was so offputting everytime i tried to drink it. Very love or hate company. Small batch is too floral to me. The barrel proof single barrel store picks are their best imo.
Sb in general I believe is their best also. You are not alone because 4 roses is def a love or hate experience. Seems like there is no middle ground.
Just bought a bottle of straight bourbon Four Roses at SAMS in Missouri. $16.25..
Great buy!
SBS is good but relative to other similar priced bottles it falls short, and it definitely doesn't feel like it's a $20 premium over the single barrel.
The sb is so solid it’s hard to beat.
I’m new to bourbons and bought the single barrel because of all the recommendations. It has a sour note to it at the end that I don’t really care for.
Four roses....four great bottles
