I took care of my father at 21. Instead of going out and partying with my friends I was helping my mom with my dad. Your saying is not 100% true. Some families are not able to stay home all day with their parent. Lots of people have 2 people working. Lots of people have children and have to drive them to activities. Some parents you just can't take care of. People with severe alzheimer's are better off in a facility that is equipped to take care of them. Some parents are not willing to move from whatever state they are in. You really can't ask your children to pick up their entire lives (leave their job, take children out of the school they know, and take the children away from their friends). Lots of Western parents Don't kick their children out at 18. That is the problem in the US. You'll find 40 year olds living in their parents basement mooching off of them.
Diamond nature yeah it is lol it probably effects children the most, it is important how you are shaped as a kid because once you are passed 18 your are who you are you aren't changing easily. As a westerner (from U.S.), I think we like to put emphasis on not just opinionated women, but independent, self-efficient women who have an "I don't need a Man" attitude. Another thing we put emphasis on is confidence ("Confidence is key sweetie!"-Every mom ever). One time I was reading one of the more shallow fashion magazines and THEY even wrote "you can be the most objectively unattractive people in the world and still can get plenty of guys solely with the power of confidence." Personally, i think that's testament to how much we value confidence in western culture that even the vapidness of Cosmo has to admit that it's seen as paramount. So independence, confidence, power, the ability to crush people with clever, in-your-face comebacks when they're being rude to you, I think I feel pressure to be all those things in this society, but I wonder if any one else feels that way.
That's excellent point! Being confident and independent is really the key in western world, however lots of women in the eastern cultures like to play the venerable card. Like we all have a goal to achieve the sense of presence, but the approach used are totally opposite. I don't know whether history or philosophy caused the eastern culture prefer 'the other way around' method. But I do see a lot of young women in China actually are or trying to be independent and confident, just like in the western society.

If you look up "Inside Amy Schumer - Sex Prep" here on youtube you can see Amy spoofing the huge pressure American women face in the sex and dating scene to be gorgeous and perfect. I think these magazines churn out way more articles that point out what is wrong with you and how you can change yourself instead of self-confidence boosting articles. Even if you asked a western guy to say with complete honesty the most important things he'd value in a girl he'd probably talk about looks before getting into her personality. Little girls even face incredible pressure to be pretty and cute. How many dolls and role models for them do you see that aren't beautiful, skinny, or young? May be they are referring to asian females who live in asia's big cities. Majority is self-conscious about what they wear. But well, people dress accordingly to their own personality and social group they are involved with (Based on my own experience). They just generalized all asian women.

The thing is, when most people say "asian" or "east asia" they usually mean China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, HK, Singapore, etc. Places like India, etc people usually say "I'm indian" (as opposed to I'm asian) etc. At least, that's the habit where I live (Canada).

This is my two cents. There are a lot of people who say they hate Western beauty standards, mostly because they come from other cultures. That's understandable. But then they'll abide by another beauty standard which can be detrimental to people in their own societies who don't fit that standard. This is where I think an individualistic mindset is helpful in encouraging people to choose the type of person they want to be attracted to rather than encouraging people to go through things like injections or plastic surgery in order to be accepted by their society.
5:11 The hour glass look is not cultural it is genetic. In other words nearly ALL men on earth find the hour glass figure attractive. Men also like beautiful healthy hair and a nice smile. The reason for this is that it is a proven fact that women who have these three traits are able to have children more easily and give birth to healthy children. Being able to survive child birth and have ones children live is a major biological advantage.
I am glad that there are different beauty standards, grateful for diversity. It is nice to know that somewhere in the world your body type would be valued and seen are beautiful. I would hate to see one beauty standard become a global standard that everyone wants.

I've seen three of your videos now. I was with a first generation Filipina for a number of years, and you all answered many questions I had from my time with her. She was mostly Americanized, but the cultural views/habits often mystified me. If we had youtube in 2000, maybe it would have saved a relationship! She was/is a very sweet woman, but my cultural ignorance definitely played a big factor in our never getting married. Ah, also so true about Asian girls dressing up. I always noticed Japanese girls are superb dressers. Mainly the tourists in London. Young Asian girls are so creative and original with fashion. You know when they have been westernised. I always feel so underdressed compared to Asian women and I like to look smart. On the other hand, I have been frowned upon in the UK for looking trendy and smart at work. Since I work in a school as a part time teacher, other women don't get my dress sense. Not so bad these days I have moved from the countryside but it was a nightmare in a rural area I used to live.

Not all western girls don't care about what their wear - that's just in the US and in Australia where people are sooo casual all of the time. In Europe, girls put in a lot of efforts to dressing well. In France for example, girls are constantly being judged on how they dress. And even in parts of the US, for example, NYC girls would dress a lot more formal and nicer than someone from Santa Monica CA. That said, obvs the style standards are still very different between European girls and East-asian girls..... Just saying, I don't think we should represent Cali and Aussi people as all of western people.

Western fashion and hairstyles are more laid back. You'll see western guys with long hair/man buns and just wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Western guys look more rugged and 'manly' in my opinion. Aisan guys are usually very fashionable and like looking professional, for example, shaving their face, wearing nice clothing and doing their hair/makeup. They don't look unmanly but they definitely have more of a feminine appeal. I'm Canadian and I have a lot of Korean and Chinese friends and people in my school and that's what I've noticed when it comes to fashion and those thing. I love the guys fashion sense though.. Especially the boy groups like damn these boys know how to dress! Lol

The whole "west vs east" thing is so incredibly outdated at this point and needs to go away. It's not helping reduce stereotypes, exactly the opposite. I prefer West for personality, but the other factors I lean towards East. Like how they said in the video. Western personality, but Asian values. I think it might be because I grew up in the East and the West and was exposed to both cultures. But I like personality for West because speaking your mind is more supported. When I go back to Japan, I've been scolded for speaking my mind a lot.
I think your West view leans more to USA, and that does not equal Europe. It is still different from East, but more in between (geographically and think wise)

In Philippines we are more leaning on to the western style but there's still an Asian touch in our standard like fair skin. We also observe Asian values with a western personalities. So I guess everybody and even foreigners can fit in without adjusting in the society except for the morals and values. Of course we Asians are very strict with it so that's just one thing to look out for when they come to visit the Philippines.
We were, in a way, a colony of Spain and America at some point. In addition to that, Filipinos are easily influenced by other culture's practices, etc., especially when it's done by a Filipino celebrity.
Shalimar Hadjerel I know, the feeling's mutual. It feels off that we don't have much that's still genuinely just ours. Most of our cultural practices are not just fading, most are very close to nonexistent that it's just sad. Most are now simple tourist attractions to both foreigners and fellow Filipinos, instead of something that we see or experience on a regular basis.
In my honest opinion, this is coming from an asian, I think eastern beauty standards seek to replicate western ones. In many asian countries you see people using skin lighteners to get white skin, dying their hair to get any color that isn't black, contact lenses to get any color that isn't brown. Don't even get me started on the surgeries many asians do to get higher nose bridges and bigger eyes. I AM NOT saying all asians think like this, but if you look at the biggest celebrities in many asian countries, they are either mixed white, have surgeries, or have natural features that are more western than a typical person from their country.
The whitening is not a replicate. This standard started way back ancient times in China like 200 BC. Just because pale skin means no outdoor work/no farming/rich/clean. The girls came from a high status family never allowed to leave their home for their entire life.

Skin whitening treatments "promise" to make u actually white, not a light skin tone which looks natural. U r right tho, being pale indicates luxury and not having to work hard.
Firstly, colored hair and lenses isn't a beauty standard in East Asia. They still very much embrace their dark hair and eyes. And secondly, I genuinely do not believe that most asians, in dyeing their hair or wearing contact lenses, are consciously aiming to look western. It just so happens that Caucasians have a greater variety of hair and and eye color, and many colors we try on ourselves happen to be occurring in their race. As a westerner (from U.S.), I think we like to put emphasis on not just opinionated women, but independent, self-efficient women who have an "I don't need a Man" attitude. Another thing we put emphasis on is confidence ("Confidence is key sweetie!"-Every mom ever). One time I was reading one of the more shallow fashion magazines and THEY even wrote "you can be the most objectively unattractive people in the world and still can get plenty of guys solely with the power of confidence." Personally, i think that's testament to how much we value confidence in western culture that even the vapidness of Cosmo has to admit that it's seen as paramount. So independence, confidence, power, the ability to crush people with clever, in-your-face comebacks when they're being rude to you, I think I feel pressure to be all those things in this society, but I wonder if any one else feels that way.
That's excellent point! Being confident and independent is really the key in western world, however lots of women in the eastern cultures like to play the venerable card. Like we all have a goal to achieve the sense of presence, but the approach used are totally opposite. I don't know whether history or philosophy caused the eastern culture prefer 'the other way around' method. There are a lot of people who say they hate Western beauty standards, mostly because they come from other cultures. That's understandable. But then they'll abide by another beauty standard which can be detrimental to people in their own societies who don't fit that standard. This is where I think an individualistic mindset is helpful in encouraging people to choose the type of person they want to be attracted to rather than encouraging people to go through things like injections or plastic surgery in order to be accepted by their society.

im from a thai background and I find in their videos that when they refer to asians, they just just refer to chinese, japanese and korean culture or trends, rather than actual asian things! these guys should do a video with a person with a background from each oriental asian country, like countries such as thailand, laos, malaysia, indonesia, burma and so on. and then ask questions on different topics! and then see the different and ideas! thumbs up if u agree!

When the world (and you) thinks of Asians, they tend to not think of Turks, Iranians, Russians, etc., even though they too are Asians. I've seen three of your videos now. I was with a first generation Filipina for a number of years, and you all answered many questions I had from my time with her. She was mostly Americanized, but the cultural views/habits often mystified me. If we had youtube in 2000, maybe it would have saved a relationship! She was/is a very sweet woman, but my cultural ignorance definitely played a big factor in our never getting married.

Ah, also so true about Asian girls dressing up. I always noticed Japanese girls are superb dressers. Mainly the tourists in London. Young Asian girls are so creative and original with fashion. You know when they have been westernised. I always feel so underdressed compared to Asian women and I like to look smart. On the other hand, I have been frowned upon in the UK for looking trendy and smart at work. Since I work in a school as a part time teacher, other women don't get my dress sense. Not so bad these days I have moved from the countryside but it was a nightmare in a rural area I used to live.

Not all western girls don't care about what their wear - that's just in the US and in Australia where people are sooo casual all of the time. In Europe, girls put in a lot of efforts to dressing well. In France for example, girls are constantly being judged on how they dress. And even in parts of the US, for example, NYC girls would dress a lot more formal and nicer than someone from Santa Monica CA. That said, obvs the style standards are still very different between European girls and East-asian girls..... Just saying, I don't think we should represent Cali and Aussi people as all of western people.

Western fashion and hairstyles are more laid back. You'll see western guys with long hair/man buns and just wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Western guys look more rugged and 'manly' in my opinion. Aisan guys are usually very fashionable and like looking professional, for example, shaving their face, wearing nice clothing and doing their hair/makeup. They don't look unmanly but they definitely have more of a feminine appeal. I'm Canadian and I have a lot of Korean and Chinese friends and people in my school and that's what I've noticed when it comes to fashion and those thing. I love the guys fashion sense though.. Especially the boy groups like damn these boys know how to dress! Lol

I prefer West for personality, but the other factors I lean towards East. Like how they said in the video. Western personality, but Asian values. I think it might be because I grew up in the East and the West and was exposed to both cultures. But I like personality for West because speaking your mind is more supported. When I go back to Japan, I've been scolded for speaking my mind a lot.

In Philippines we are more leaning on to the western style but there's still an Asian touch in our standard like fair skin. We also observe Asian values with a western personalities. So I guess everybody and even foreigners can fit in without adjusting in the society except for the morals and values. Of course we Asians are very strict with it so that's just one thing to look out for when they come to visit the Philippines.
We were, in a way, a colony of Spain and America at some point. In addition to that, Filipinos are easily influenced by other culture's practices, etc., especially when it's done by a Filipino celebrity.

Most of our cultural practices are not just fading, most are very close to nonexistent that it's just sad. In my honest opinion, this is coming from an asian, I think eastern beauty standards seek to replicate western ones. In many asian countries you see people using skin lighteners to get white skin, dying their hair to get any color that isn't black, contact lenses to get any color that isn't brown. Don't even get me started on the surgeries many asians do to get higher nose bridges and bigger eyes. I AM NOT saying all asians think like this, but if you look at the biggest celebrities in many asian countries, they are either mixed white, have surgeries, or have natural features that are more western than a typical person from their country.

The whitening is not a replicate. This standard started way back ancient times in China like 200 BC. Just because pale skin means no outdoor work/no farming/rich/clean. The girls came from a high status family never allowed to leave their home for their entire life.

Firstly, colored hair and lenses isn't a beauty standard in East Asia. They still very much embrace their dark hair and eyes. And secondly, I genuinely do not believe that most asians, in dyeing their hair or wearing contact lenses, are consciously aiming to look western. It just so happens that Caucasians have a greater variety of hair and and eye color, and many colors we try on ourselves happen to be occurring in their race. We don't all suddenly want to be called "Jessica" or "Ashley" just because we want to see what we look like with a hair and eye colour that isn't black. Thirdly, the hottest celebrities in South Korea such as IU, Suzy, Seolhyun, and Yoona look completely Asian. Growing up as a young girl and watching them on TV, the idea that they look anything other than East Asian had never crossed my mind.

But, the models, actresses, singers and celebrities of Asian countries all pursue or have traits which are white by nature. Also, By entertaining a variety of eye and hair colors to look better, ur subconsciously saying those traits are more attractive than just brown eyes, or black hair. I would get it if most girls would try out blonde hair just for fun but then go to black. But most Asian girls I know personally, have a rotation of brown, blonde, auburn, etc. They think black hair is boring.
honestly, I've traveled a lot and i see beautiful women everywhere. still comes down to personality in the end, if you cant feel relaxed, have an easy conversation and laugh, after a while you'll get bored and find someone else
