- I'm happy to say that the boat ride back from the canvas shop was much less stressful; than the ride over there. Why, you ask? Because on the first trip, it was my first long voyage in this boat and the first time doing it by myself. Not knowing the boat, I was mildly concerned about all the systems working properly.
With that apprehension out of the way, I was able to sit back and enjoy this trip. And what a trip it was! Dead calm conditions and the first summer-like conditions of the season made for a very inspiring trip!

I love those days....but they are very far and few on lake Michigan! it could be nice in the morning and crap in the afternoon and no boat is big enough to smooth it out :( But when its glass you cant beat it!

Agreed. Just a few more projects to knock off my list though, first. I gotta replace the circuit board on the genny (it just came in yesterday), do the starboard engine impeller, 3 new SkyScreen hatch covers (on order), touch up some caulking on the deck (get rid of the completely useless silicone caulking that was used by a previous owner), polish the topsides and . . . . whatever else I can jamb in before summer is over ;-)

Such a relaxing peaceful ride across the Lake. The conditions at 15:00 are memorable. Wowser is right! You could drop anchor there, BBQ, and spend the night eh? It must be very rewarding to restore a boat that needs a little TLC to peak condition. The canvas top looks phenomenal - what craftsmanship.

I have the exact same boat, same year. You'll learn that cruising with the cabin door pen will set off your O2 sensor. At least it does on my boat.
Hi Curt. Thankfully, the factory C02 sensor has been disconnected (one of the first things I did when we got our 400 Sedan Bridge: ua-cam.com/video/5pDrQ0W9B4A/v-deo.html). That said, we do have a battery powered backup that does set off in unfavorable conditions.
Three #boats ago, we had an '87 300 Sundancer (ua-cam.com/video/KqlKNZej5xM/v-deo.html) that had a similar problem with exhaust finding it's way into the cabin. That is as a result of the air swirling around behind the #boat, causing a low pressure effect and sucking the exhaust (sometimes) back into the cockpit and/or cabin. They call it 'the stationwagon effect'.
Now I have a question for you. I watched your video about the haul out to replace one of your motors. If I may, what caused it to need replacing? As well, it looks like you have small block, carbureted engines?? Either that, or the mechanic is very small ;-) I can barely get in to the engine room our our 330 and it looks like he had way more space in there :-0

I had to replace engine because the previous owner's mechanic over-torqued the manifolds, which ended up cracking the block. Result was saltwater was found on sparkplugs when my mechanic (Paul) came to do tune-up in March. My boat does stay in the water all year long, unless I have to haul.
I'm not a motor guy so I'll have to ask Paul about big block/small block. Both he and I are over 6 ft. tall. I can get in there also, it just takes a little maneuvering.

I was out on the bay that day as well. I was actually at Canadian Yatch Tops that morning. i missed you by about half an hour. i saw the finished product of the Boogaboo before you did. :)

Good afternoon Paul , I've probably seen this video 50 times , as the others , but now even though it's only 3 degrees in Niagara Falls, the sun is out, and I'm motivated enough to uncover the boat and install our new gps/chart plotter. We went with Lowrance. Love the rear go-pro with the big blocks humming. How is the ice up there? We are driving up Sunday to the Narrows just to enjoy some early scenery and hit the tackle shop to get the new Trent Severn book we didn't win on your giveaway. We are so close to boating season ! Sweet boat . I have a 270 Sundancer with the same 7.4 MPI. Just curious.. on start up does your engine make 2 beeps prior to starting the engine with just the ignition on ?
What year is your boat looking into a 1994 290 anything I should look out for? Was wondering if I should stay away from the 4.3 l and go with the big blocks is it that much more fuel saving or am I going to get less with being under powered?

the newer boat looks very nice. I am thinking a 1998 year? I wrote you a few years ago about planing off in "fast enough for ya". good to see this one runs fast also. should get ok fuel usage going at the right rpm and you will get there earlier. question do you like the lower profile sundancer better then the bridge type yachts? or did you just not need att that room and extra weight. have a great day!

I still prefer the bridge style for ease of view - not to mention camera mounting - but the express is easier to handle.
As for fuel usage, I cant say this enough; I don't care. When we need gas, I buy gas. Simple

So I have noticed it on lots of older boats, but why are there two separate throttle sticks on each side of the helm? Does it just give the operator a choice on what side to operate the throttles or do each of them have a different purpose?
+Brendan Petry Nothing to do with age of the #boat. One set is for shifting and the other set is for throttle.
I can't believe how many times I'm asked that, so I will be doing a much more descriptive video on that subject. Quite simple, actually, and much preferred by most #boaters.

Brendan Petry because this is a twin engine boat there are two levers one set controls the gear box (forward gear. neutral reverse) the other set of levers is your throttle again you control each engine independently (Port &Starboard)
+Jordan Maynard Partly correct. When we had our '87 300 Sundancer (ua-cam.com/video/KqlKNZej5xM/v-deo.html), the twin engine setup was controlled by only two shifters/throttle controls at the helm. Yes the #boat had Alpha outdrives, but I've seen single outdrives boats with sperate throttle and shift controls. I believe that was just the manufacturer's preference...
Again, I'll be doing a detailed video on our setup, in the near future.

older boats have mechanical throttles where new boats have electronic throttles. Older ones with mechnical throttles had one set control direction (Forward, neutral, reverse) and the other control speed. New ones do it all on two sticks and is a far easier set up.

If you are going to be running that slow, could you just run one engine to save fuel?
If you watched my video on our fuel economy, you'll have seen that trying to save a money on fuel is the very farthest thing on my mind. Realistically, we might get one mile per gallon, averaged out over the season and to put extra wear on one engine in an effort to save a couple of bucks on fuel isn't something I would consider.
Not trying to sound cocky, but fuel is probably only 20% of our overall costs to keep the boat for a year. As with most folks, I work hard to have the good fortune to go boating, and on those days when we can get out on the water, I will never try to save money over our enjoyment. I use a simple formula of Smile Per Gallon :-)

When you mention 'boats like yours', I'm guessing you're referring to small/mid sized cruisers? Irrespective of the #boat size, traditional water makers are used to convert salt water drawn from the ocean in to drinkable fresh water for use onboard. As we are located in the Great Lakes region of North America, we don't get in to salt water, so a water maker would be pointless for us. That said, I have installed a water filtration system which performs a similar function, but for freshwater applications.
I have a couple of videos on the subject, with the first one (ua-cam.com/video/VIZG0quoNBM/v-deo.html) discussing how it works. The second video shows my installation on our current #boat (ua-cam.com/video/15850c5SWdA/v-deo.html). We had a similar system on our last boat and it works great!

Simple reason; I didn't want to drown 😉 Believe itirnot, this was the first time I wore a lifejacket in 50 years of #boating! Thing was that this was a new to us #boat and the first long voyage on it. I was alone crossing a big lake, first thing in the spring. Few other boats on the water meant that if things went bad, I'd be out there alone for a potentially long time - not a good thing in cold water.
Luckily, things went smoothly and I didn't have to test that brand new lifejacket after all 👍

After reviewing a lot of Sea Ray 330 dancer reviews I guess that's on the mark a lot of them talked about extending the trim tabs for better (lower rpm plane and economy) performance.
