I’ve had both but I’m from White Castle territory and the only difference is that White Castle uses a dark mustard on the side that is so much better than the yellow mustard. The biggest similarity is that they’ll both wreck your gut the next day so make sure you have a restroom close.

My nephew worked at a plant in Tennessee and they actually make the Pattie’s for both Krystal and White Castle. He told me the only difference is that one has holes in the patties

I live in Mississippi so I know more about Krystal (in fact I did a study of the company for a college course a long, long time ago). I have however been to Illinois on several occasions where I have had White Castles. To me the only difference between them was that WC puts five holes in the beef patty to let the onion essence go up into the bun. Krystal does not do this -- they mostly handle that through covering the burgers while cooking.
I like this good report, but I must make one correction. In my study back then I talked to Krystal HQ and they confirmed that it was geographical in how the two chains divided the country. However I was told by Krystal that it is not a "handshake agreement," but it actually a written agreement that the Ingrams and Davenport made back in the 30s.

Bowling Green KY has both Krystal and White Castle. They also have both Raising Cane's and Zaxby's. The biggest difference I found between the two is that Krystal's buns are closer in taste to Kings Hawaiian bread than regular buns. I absolutely prefer White Castle. As an aside, I also feel that Raising Cane's has the superior chicken strips.
Chicken Strip places are out of control where I live. We have Zaxby's, Raising Cane's, Guthrie's and Slim Chickens.

Years ago I found London, KY had a White Castle and Krystal I made the trip and it was completely worth it. Both are great burger joints, but I grew up on White Castle so it just felt better. Kentucky must be the Front line of The Slider No Man's Land, Thank God for that little piece of heaven.
We had a Krystal in Henderson until about the late 1990s, and then it went out of business. It was where the Tumbleweed is now. Me and my family never did eat there for whatever reason, so I don’t know anything much about that chain. The nearest Whitecastle to us is in Evansville, IN across the Ohio river.
We only have White Castle here in Louisville. We have both those chicken joints, though.
I was born in Atlanta Georgia and ate Krystals. They felt different from eating at McDonald's or any other burger place because of their sandwiches. In fact I actually liked their chicken sandwiches better than most places. I currently work at Sonic and we have our chicken slinger. It's not bad but it just isn't the same.

For a brief period circa 2008 Richmond, Kentucky had both a White Castle & a Krystals at the same time, what a time to be alive!
I thought they were the same chain, just regional names, like Rally's/Checker's or Carl's Jr/Hardees.
Southern Illinois was blessed with a similar situation for a time in the late 90s. I had fond memories of my dad buying a sack of both to decide once and for all which was better.
I have lived in both regions for a quite awhile at one time or another. I actually get cravings for white castle when in the south. White castle does give really bad gas and intestinal issues due to the onions but they are addictive. Krystal never fulfilled the crave. Kinda tells ya something you wanna go back after the worse case of gas ever.
Yep my uncle who lived in Alabama who would come to visit in st.Louis would demand we stop and get White Castle as soon as we picked him up then when we would drop him off at the airport. I visited and he took me to Krystal’s and he specifically stopped me from ordering like they are White Castle and I’m glad he did, I could not eat them, they were bad bad bad.

I guess it's a case of "you want what you ain't got." I grew up on White Castles living in Indiana as a child. In my teens I had a Krystal for the first time and thought they were the greatest thing EVER! Then, in my late 20's I moved to East Tennessee. Krystals are everywhere, but the nearest White Castle is an hour and a half drive away. Now I want nothing more than to have access to a fresh steamy bag of White Castles! To be honest, I love them both, but my loyalties lie with White Castle.

I'm from MN now live in GA, Krystal is atrocious in my opinion. I love White Castle, however.
Texas used to have Krystals. I've tried both. White Castle didn't taste different at the actual place than what I can get in the frozen foods section in grocery stores. I tried White Castle in Chicago
I grew up with White Castle for 20 years and then spent the last 20+ in the south with Krystal. While similar, they're very different. I won't complain about either, but have grown to prefer Krystal. Krystal has a little more of a mini burger feel while White Castle is definitely its own thing. I think it's the onions and the buns. White Castle's bun is unique while the Krystal is a little more like a regular bun. Hard to describe. Also, I think the onions are more center stage with White Castle. It could be the mustard in the Krystal though standing out for me. I'm a mustard fan having been a Chicago native, so maybe that drew my bias ironically enough lol. One menu item I haven't seen at White Castle that Krystal has are the Pups. They're mini hotdogs and the chili cheese one is fire. At the end of the day, you get used to one or the other so the initial shock of having the other is "this sucks". Once you appreciate them, they're both good in their own way.
I've only had White Castle once, but I generally agree with your descriptions. When I was a kid in the 70s, Krystal was a lot better. They've gone downhill.
I’m a Florida kid, so definitely raised on Krystal. Moved to St. Louis in the late 90s and was happy to finally try White Castle.
Krystal remains my preferred by a hair. To me they both share a “mystique” that stands out. Something about their oddness. Now, Living back in Florida, I do make a point to hit up a White Castle whenever I’m north of Tennessee, if I come across one, particularly after drinking.
I can remember in the 80s that Krystal had a full-sized burger in their menu for a few years. I thought it was terrific too.
White Castle lost its appeal when they went mainstream! There's big difference between jumping on the Brooklyn J tain and having to ride 5 stops for the burgers than walking across the street and being able to get them frozen from Keyfood!
I grew up in NJ, but I have lived in Mississippi for 25years. Ive eaten at both many times. Similar but different. I love them both, especially after a few beers or when i have the munchies...

Clarksville Tennessee has both Krystal & White Castle. I grew up on both. Krystal also specializes in Hot Dogs & Corn Dogs. While White Castle focuses on Just Burgers, and fries. That is probably the biggest difference between the two. I think when I was younger I liked Krystal, but now a days I like White Castle. Unfortunately there are neither here in Albuquerque New Mexico where I live now.

White Castle has a much larger menu selection. Fish nuggets. Clam strips, surf and turf, breakfast sandwiches, jalapeño cheeseburgers, chicken rings, pulled pork and more.

I remember being in the army in the eighties. We would get out of the field and buy Krystal’s by the tray and beer by the case. Cheap, tasty and filling. As young soldiers at the end of the month, we usually didn’t have much cash. Krystal and Pabst blue ribbon was the weekend menu of choice.

I grew up in Mississippi and was raised on Krystals. My grandfather and I would get them every time we went to Southaven. I have so many fond memories of those trips. Then I went to St. Louis at 14. We got White Castle on the way there. That day changed my life. Krystals can no longer satisfy me. I can't even go into the restaurant because I can't stand the smell anymore. White Castles has been one of my favorite restaurants ever since that day.
as someone from memphis you're lying to yourself white castle is trash compared to krystal. Krystal restaurants may be the most dirty disgusting hovels on the planet but the food is 100% better than white castle.

I live in New York and i love While Castle. I had Krystal for the first time last week in Daytona. It was just like having my favorite Murder Burgers but with mustard. They taste the same to me. Even the wait on the drive thru line was about the same. But remember, your burger is freshly cooked, not in a box or wrapper sitting on a shelf waiting for you to order it.
I think they both taste the same also. WC did have mustard packets, so since I like mustard, I used them. Krystal automatically adds mustard to their burgers.
Started eating White Castle burgers when I was about 10 yrs. old, and they were 12¢ each. Now, 70 yrs. later, I still love 'em. 💚😊💚

As teenagers, me and my brothers drove 16 hours straight from Canada to get to the nearest White Castle with several months of expectations built up from watching Harold and Kumar. It was a hilariously terrible experience. At least we were able to compensate with much better fast foods on the road and turn it into a fast food road trip. On our way back in the middle of the night and zero luggage the lady at the custom probably thought we were smuggling something, she took a while to let us go... Fun times 😊!

I am having one of those dreaded ADHD/anxiety moments that rear their head every so often and there are very few pieces of content that do not scream in your face with stimulation (including TV). Thanks for the laid back content really helping my mood and state of mind to just focus on something quiet at this point in time.

My family ate at a Krystal exactly once, on a drive from Texas to Florida in the mid-1990s, during a hotel stopover in Mississippi.
At the time, I was really hesitant to try new food, so I ate somewhere else while my family ate there.
The next day, I was the only one on the trip that didn't have diarrhea.
Frozen White Castle gives me the same problem. I still get them tho...

As someone that grew up in the Midwest and moved to Louisiana, the similarity in the burgers is visual only. The closest you can get to a White Castle burger here is the frozen White Castle burgers at the grocery store. I don't know why they taste so different (even without mustard), but they do.
The biggest difference I've seen is that the onions at White Castle are in rings or pieces. They are grilled with the burger. The onions on Krystals are finely diced and seem to be steamed with the burgers. Krystal burgers get sort of a grey appearance because they are steamed, while White Castles are grilled.
Krystal uses a somewhat larger bun.
Yeah, White Castle is B tier in my opinion, Krystal is D tier.
The way they're cooked might make a difference. White Castle slyder patties have holes punched in them so they cook through without flipping. Krystals are whole and are flipped before the buns are set on them. White Castles also have a layer of onion on the grill before placing the patties, while Krystals have onions layered over the patties. There's also a difference with their bun recipes The Palace buns are baked darker, while Krystals are lighter in color fell a little doughier on the palette. Both chains use rehydrated onion.

I grew up in Illinois, so I always loved White Castles. Now that I live in the south, I appreciate Krystal’s because I just love those sliders with all the onions on it 😋
I grew up in Queens, NYC, and White Castle was a staple up until my 20's when I moved to New England. Any time I find myself in NYC or NJ it's a moral imperative to stop at a White Castle and bring home a 100 burger Crave Crate.
I had the opportunity to try Krystals during a visit to FL in the late 90's. The only difference I could see was their use of mustard instead of ketchup, and that made all the difference! I love White Castle, still crave it from time to time. I would never eat at a Krystals ever again. My curiosity was sated by my one and only visit.

I grew up with a White Caste location less than two blocks from home, so they have always been a part of my life. Their slider is the only chain burger I still really enjoy. I remember them being 15 cents in the early 80's vs an even dollar today. The thing nobody seems to mention is their especially light, airy milkshakes, which are an absolute must. I never knew about Krystal before.
Being from St. Louis, I grew up on White Castle. However, my family used to go to Florida on yearly vacations and we would always stop at the Krystal in Athens AL on the way. They are both extremely similar but it was always a cool treat to stop at Krystal when we were in the south because it was different but familiar as well.

I took 2 friends to Nashville and we had Krystal, it was hilarious because it was the most awful experience we ever had at the same time. I asked a bartender later that day and she told me it's a known fact in TN Krystal is a laxative. Having that shared memory is great, thanks Krystal

Really can't believe that lol wow I'm lucky enuf 2 say I've actually been 2 both of these places and my experience white castle destroys Krystal me n my buddy's drove for hrs jus 2 get white castle even tho we have a Krystal bout 30 mins away. Krystals is ok not bad by no means my experience but white castle is on another level Back in the day I got 10 burgers n 2 frys for only $5.99 no drink but dat was ok jus drank water. It was awesome love white castle wanna take my son 2 try it but it's like a 4 or 5 hr drive and my cars suck lol

I'm originally from MI but living in TN currently, so I've got to try both places a handful of times and I gotta say that I don't really notice a difference, both seem pretty meh to me. After trying Krystal's, I actually thought it was just a rebranded White Castle for the south (like a Checkers/Rally's kind of situation.) I don't think anyone is missing anything if they haven't had one or the other (or both, just save yourself and go somewhere else lol.)

I'm from NYC so I have watched White Castle grow since I was a Kid. when I was 8 the burgers were 10 cents, each and the advertising was that garbage cans in the area would be stuffed with White Castle bags and boxes to say nothing of them littering the sidewalks. When I was in the Army I was stationed in the South and introduced to Krystals who screwed up a perfectly good White Castle hamburger by putting mustard on it but I bought 10-20 at a time so had no problem having them made without it and Krystal's buns are dryer. Not enough steaming I guess.
Southern chains typically have mustard. Whataburger always has mustard.

Growing up in the midwest, I loved White Castle. Vacationing in the South as a kid, I also loved Krystal. They're pretty different in a lot of ways, but I like them both.
Same, but inverted. Born and raised in Georgia and visited family in Cleveland. I would try White Castle but I prefer Krystal. Krystal is great for road trips. I always buy them for the family before a long ride and we munch along the way. Only thing I don’t like about Krystal is they’ve changed their fries, and they are TERRIBLE. I just get the burgers, Krystal Chiks or pups.

what was really cool was learning about the correlation between upton sinclairs the jungle and the need to see clean burger places....never knew that.
I am now 72 and was raised in the south and we grew up with Krystal burgers and they were great back then, but recently I traveled back to the Huntsville Alabama area and tried them and they were not near the same. I gave them another chance in another location and it was even worse. I am retired Army and travel all over the US and tried White castle many times in many locations and never had a bad burger. Now I live in the Philippines and they sell frozen White Castle here and they are great also. Just like you mentioned Krystal puts mustard and I add mustard to my White Castle eat the whole box. Nice video and you were pretty much right on, and I think what happened to Krystal is the franchising, where White Castle kept more control.
Personally I find that most fast food places in the US lack the quality they had back in the 70's and 80's. IMO it is due in part to hiring cooks who weren't raised on that food, and therefore don't know if it tastes "off". That and corporate greed probably causing them to not change oil as much, cheaper ingredients, not care about maintaining standards, etc.
The one in Huntsville is the worst one I've ever eaten at. Got so sick I haven't had them since 😢
yeah my brother took me there I was visiting Huntsville. The burgers we got were already cold and tasted old. I tried another location in Oxford Alabama while traveling from Atlanta and its was not good also. I live in Huntsville and can confirm the Krystal's here is not ran well.
I actually live near the White Castle that opened up in Orlando, it was a big deal that made the local news as the first White Castle being released in the south, and for weeks the place was absolutely flooded. I even went there two or three weeks after the opening, thinking that things would’ve died down by now, but it still took me a good hour to get through the drive-through.
I have eaten at both Krystals and White Castle, and I have to say in both cases… Too much onion. But that’s for me I guess.
I wouldn’t consider Florida “the south” culturally tbh. There’s room for both here.
The pickle is what saves it imo. Miss the old cheaper price of thr Crave Case though with mozzarella sticks; lotsa bang for your buck!
WC also surprisingly pays their rmpliyees very decently; during covid when people were advertising "Up to $12 per hour", WC literally was like "$15 starting pay for all positions."
Small company in a sense but they hold their identity up pretty well.

I'm pretty much one of those people that lived most of my life in the South, so White Castle wasn't really known to me. However, Krystal WAS a staple of my childhood, as it was a cheaper option for a family meal even back in the 70s and 80s. In particular, during the times my family lived out of state (Dad was in the Air Force), and we often took annual road trips to visit family in Tampa. During the start of the return trip home, Dad would always stop at a Krystal that was on Kennedy Blvd. -- right before the 1-275 interchange -- and buy two big bags of Krystal sliders, fries and we'd eat that on our way out of Florida.
I have had the chance to eat White Castle, and I'll be fair they are good, but Krystal has in my opinion the better flavor profile, since mustard does add to the current additions of onions and pickles. If I had to pick between the two, Krystal just wins over White Castle for me.
Another expansion of the White Castle name was that they also sold, and still do sell their burgers in supermarket freezer cases.

The guy who started Krystal worked for White Castle & he left to compete with them. They both exist in Kentucky. In Bowling Green Kentucky (the square hamburger capital) there is a White Castle with a Krystal across the street and a Wendy's next door. I used to work there and been to all 3. PoFolks was awesome it was a sit down restaurant similar to Bob Evans but focused on dinner not breakfast. White Castles and Krystals taste VERY different. We have a TON of White Castles here in Indiana & there is a corporate office for something here in Indianapolis in the Fountain Square area.

Was just about comment about BG having both. In my experience, if someone is eating Krystal, it’s bc the White Castle line was backed up or something. They’re very similar but Krystal seems like the backup Quarterback while WC is the starter.
Same happened with Starbucks. Co-founder Jerry Baldwin of Starbucks bought Peet's when it was small and competed with them. I wonder if these types of incidents contributed to the proliferation non-compete agreements. So many businesses start up because ex-employees or ex-executives leave to compete against their former company.
I'm in the South and I've been eating Krystals since the early 70s. I've eaten White Castle on my trips with the family to New York. They are very similar but different.
Very funny story about Krystal, my dad used to love Krystal growing up. He’s lived all over so when he was a kid he’d cut grass to get money so he could go get Krystal sliders. One day when I was like 4 we where passing through Murfreesboro, Tennessee and he was like “oh my gosh I remember Krystal, let’s get some” he took a bite after buying the whole car some. He hated it😂

Hailing from Atlanta, I grew up with Krystal and it’s still a guilty pleasure from time to time. When I was at college at UGA the Krystal was busiest at 2am after the bars closed because Krystal is ok when you’re sober but frickin’ amazing when you’re drunk. I tried White Castle years later and honestly I like them both now.
I’m from Florida and love Krystal. But also lived in Chicago and got accustomed to White Castle. The White Castle in Orlando near Disney is so darn clean. I’ve never seen a clean White Castle before. There is also a big difference in the meat patty and how it is cooked. White Castle tends to be more juicy.

Krystal is great but it's just too dam expensive now
I've eaten both many times. My favorite by far is Krystal. When they're done right, so that the underside of the top bun where it meets the meat is a little gooey, the Krystal sliders are a little something special. The Krystal bun has a little sweetness to it compared to the blander White Castle buns. I like White Castle's little burgers which are similar and good but they are dryer and the yellow mustard on the Krystal sliders is a home run for me.

I've been to both. They are so alike that I thought they were like Hardy's and Carl's Jr; similar but separate restaurants owned by the same company!
Growing up on Long Island, White Castle was a place to go for a delicious small burger. I never had heard of Krystal until I went to Florida. Krystal's sliders are also good.

My mom is a Krystal fanatic, she loves it as we used to live in Eastern Tennessee but left when I was little. She always goes when we visit but I can never remember actually having any food from there.
Clarksville Tenn has a White Castle AND a Krystals. i was so excited to get a Slider!!!
On the west coast, I've seen White Castle in the grocery store's frozen section, never heard of or seen Krystal.
Those frozen ones are trash...but Krystals are WORSE. The only White Castle location that I know of close to the West Coast is in Scottsdale, Arizona...a BIG one too!

I grew up in Indianapolis and had several white castles nearby, so very familiar with them. I moved to Raleigh, NC in 1990 and was introduced to Crystals. Very similar in most ways, however they seem to have moved away from this area. Now I buy white castles in the grocery stores!
I live in Illinois and my mom lives in Raleigh,NC. I visit her at least once a year and have never seen a Krystal out there.
@@weaslepopperKrystal has never had any locations, north of a handful of locations(i.e. Bowling Green) in southern and western Kentucky. Kentucky is one of the few states, where both chains have a small overlap in their locations. Same with both chains overlapping, in the Nashville area. In the rest of Tennessee(i.e. Chattanooga, Knoxville, etc), they have nothing except Krystal locations.

Growing up on Long Island NY, White Castle was a tradition growing up. We would get a sack of sliders, fries and onion rings every couple of weeks. I live in Connecticut now which is a WC desert. But last year I was able to get some out in Vegas with a couple of locations on or near the strip.

Yes I have visited both. As a young adult I lived in NYC worked for the Boys Club of America in the Bronx. There was a White Castle on Fordham Road. It was a part time job and I was between jobs. I loved White Castle because I could get dinner for less than $5. I grew up in Alabama and Kristyl’s were always located in larger towns. Now I live in Florida Kristyl’s are everywhere my favorite is the chili pups. They are so good that I have to sneak and eat them whenever I get a chance.
I am a white castle super freak. Unfortunately I left the Los Angeles area just as they started building the ones in Las Vegas. I’ve been to Krystals in Louisiana, and Georgia, and I will say that white castles and Krystals cheeseburgers taste nearly identical, which is good for those of you that are a fan of either but only have the other one in your area.
Sadly, where I live now the nearest White castles or Krystals are 4 to 7 hours away.
I went to the most sketchy White Castle in Toledo Ohio once.
The whole counter was behind bullet proof glass. To get the food they opened a door, placed the food in a box, closed the door and then pressed a release so you can open a door to the box and get the food.
And this was in 2007, I can understand that kinda thing in a post C19 world, so it must have been a rough area to need it back then.
Chicago has a few White Castle locations on the west and south side, where you have to order your food through a bulletproof glass window. It isn't only in Toledo, where WC built a location like that.
I vaguely remember the former White Castle near Cermak and State(just west of McCormick Place convention hall) used to be a bulletproof glass ordering window location, along with a drive thru. To my surprise WC replaced this location with a MUCH nicer building that has no bulletproof windows inside, and even has numerous indoor dining booths and seats. For a few years White Castle tested the 1921 Slider at this location, and only last year did they finally start to sell the 1921 slider at all locations.
That's part of the experience in going to a White Castle. 😂

Grew up in NY/CT, went to college in GA, so I know both. The one I went to during college, if you ordered sliders without mustard they (very unofficially) called that “White Castle style”, so even they knew what was what.
I had Krystal 1st when I was 21 and moved down south. Loved it, it was just 2 of a bunch of places new to me including Jack's, Zaxby's, Churches, Bojangles, chik file, Moe's, Captain D's, etc.
We moved again and by the time I was probably about 24 White Castle put a new location into a nearby city. It was hit or miss at first but they seemed to be getting on track by the time I left BUT then I moved up north and lived in a city with an established one and that location was absolutely fantastic. The rotation of menu items including vegetarian options was really nice and the breakfast combos made the 4am walks through negative temps into work SO much better.
Very ,good research. Being from Chattanooga, Tennessee I have to say I'm a big Krystal fan. I have had White Castle and both burgers are very similar. Nashville, Tennessee is the only metro area I know of that has both Krystal and White Castle restaurants.
Been to both and depending on the location mostly consistent and still get the frozen WC’s. Having grown up in S. Florida in the late ‘60’s we had Royal Castle. I believe owned AND operated by the Singer family. 15c sliders, think the deal was a dozen for a buck fifty that came in something like a flat doughnut box. Open 24 hrs. Really good root beer soda. All really good for the price at the time, was a once a week treat for myself and my three younger brothers (needed 2 dozen). As an early morning paper boy on the weekends it was always the start of the day @ 4am! Sadly all history, not sure when they went out but I still ride past the old location (now a bank) in our neighborhood when I visit - sure miss it!
Does White Castle have a breakfast menu comparable with Krystal? Krystal has a 3-egg breakfast with sausage, toast and grits that is amazing!
White Castle had been serving breakfast for years now and it's pretty good. They just introduced French toast breakfast sandwiches.
Northerners don't eat grits, most don't even know what they are. You'd be lucky to even find some instant grits in a Walmart past Virginia.

So a big difference in their menus is that WC does more seafood items than Krystal and Krystal does mini hot dogs/corn dogs. Their fries are different with Krystal doing chili cheese fries. Krystal does not have the holes in their burgers but it doesn’t change the taste, w/o mustard they taste the same.

As one of the elite and enlightened, I have had the chance to eat both Krystals and White Castles. One of the biggest differences you didn't mention is in the way they are cooked, and that White Castles have holes in their patties where as Krystals do not. Krystals taste better overall because of they way they are steamed with the onions on them and the mustard adds a bit of tang that is just missing from WC that makes them taste bland to my mouth.

When I was a little girl, my family moved from Chicago to Nashville, and so we ate at both. I never knew why we only ate at Crystal, which I think was called Crystal Palace(?) in Nashville. Now I do!
I personally love White Castle, but I also see why some people might not. I love anything with onions on it, so White Castle cooking their burgers on a bed of onions makes them heavenly for me. Those super fluffy buns complement the taste really well, too. It’s definitely a unique experience that isn’t for everyone and will definitely be polarizing to anyone who tries it.
I assume that you can order it without onions, right? I live in Connecticut and we don't have white castles so I've never tried it. But I assume they'll make it any way you want otherwise why would you go there.

I have had both, you can find both in London KY (off separate exits). I grew up on white castles in Louisville KY but now I often visit London for family. 9 years ago was the first time I have ever had Krystals and I am in a minority on this but I prefer it for a couple of reasons. First, Krystals is way less greasy and I prefer mustard on my hamburger anyway, second is that Krystals serve mini-chili dogs, much like Skyline chili (Louisville franchise) with a similar chili taste (skyline is better). White Castles is one of those places you crave, eat it, regret it the next day, swear you will never eat it again. Forget about the pain you went through and the toilet you punished, then the crave hits you again one day and do it all over again....
I sometimes get White Castle delivered and add mustard, and it then tastes just like a Krystal slider. I love Krystal’s more, mostly because that’s wear I ate with family as a child; however, I purchase White Castle due to the better quality control, customer service, and quicker service. Krystal’s reportedly had the slowest service time in the fast food industry.
Did you hit the WC on Eastern Pkwy.? Remember the .10 cent bathroom pay-stalls? I think Sliders were .15 cents back then; so, at least getting rid of a Slider was cheaper than buying one!😄
I luv 'em both. Currently reside in the STL metro area where there's White Castle but commute several times a year to Nashville where I can get Krystal. It is easier to find a White Castle thats open 24 hours though..
First Krystal I had ever seen was in West Memphis, AR at the intersection of I-40/I-55.
I was a Truck Driver and made a couple of deliveries to the White Castle Distribution center in Chicago.

As someone who grew up in Chattanooga I’m biased towards Krystal, my extended family lives in Ohio and we always go to White Castle when visiting, both have great food, I prefer the mustard that’s included on the Krystal. Loved this video, keep up the great work like always!!!

if you live in Central Kentucky and want to try both restaurants, Lexington has multiple White Castles, and Mt. Sterling has a Krystal 30 minutes down the highway. As far as I know this is the closest overlap of Krystal and White Castle locations

WC has the lead due to their very strict and consistent attention to detail/cleanliness and quality of product. Krystal’s may have started out touting “crystal clean” but they don’t seem to have the standards the Castle brings to the table. All puns intended. That being said, they’re both delicious and since I live in the south I’ll be getting a sackfull tonight

There was an I think Virginia based White Castle knock-off called Little Tavern. They seemed to go out of business in the nineties at least in the DC area.

Had a great summer job in Columbus, Ohio in the 70s. Delivered yeast from Anheuser Busch to local bakeries, but first stop, every morning, at 5am, dropped off 2000 pounds of dry yeast to the White Castle bun factory. Every day, a ton of yeast.
It smelled like heaven.
So, the real secret to those buns?

Grew up in Orlando with Krystals, while my dad grew up in New Jersey with White Castles so we’d go there when we visited family up north. As of a couple years ago White Castles opened up in Orlando, Florida, too, and is far superior based on overall quality and service by a long shot. Krystals always had the reputation of being poorly run and incredibly inconsistent though I still liked them on a good day. The secret is to ask them to steam your burgers for a softer, melty-er cheese slider, however, the standard since inception at White Castles is to steam their burgers over heaps of small-diced onions. At Krystals you can also ask for your sliders “off the grill” if you don’t care for pickles and mustard for a significantly better chance of getting your sliders made correctly. In conclusion, if you hate onions, the off-balanced bread-to-meat ratio, or generally have a sensitive gut for greasy foods, you likely won’t care for either. Both are responsible for saving lives after a long, drunken evening of buffoonery downtown.
About 2017-2018 I randomly started thinking about how I hadn't had food from Krystal since I was a little kid, so I found one on Google Maps in the vicinity of where I was going to school and made plans to go there for my afternoon meal after class just to remind myself what it was like. I went there a few more times when I was over in that part of town, but I noticed maybe a year or two later that the location had closed, and I'm pretty sure there are no more Krystals in my area anymore. I also remember the one I went to as a child being next to a Church's chicken, funnily enough.
White Castle started in my state but they left in the '90s. Thinking around 1997. I knew a location and would go there to eat occasionally and then all of a sudden it just remained empty one day with the sign we are moving out. They had left the entire state but it ended up becoming a Mexican restaurant as it expanded the size of the building.
I have been to both. I grew up in Georgia, but was born in Chicago and would visit often, and eventually moved back. Both chains have their own taste and texture. I actually prefer Krystal because of the mustard, but you can order your White Castles with mustard as well. Both seem to operate very clean operations.

With a wife from Michigan, I was quickly acquainted with White Castle (love 'em). When My son was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, I visited Krystal (love 'em). But My heart (and tastebuds) belongs to White Castle.
And now with White Castle in Arizona, Scottsdale and soon Tempe, life is good!
I've had both, as far as the classic sliders go and I have to say: they taste identical. I live in Florida so we only have Kyrstal restaurants here, but the local grocery stores here in Jacksonville sell boxes of frozen White Castle sliders and I always keep them in my freezer. I think Krystal has the right idea though because I refuse to eat them without mustard. By far the superior menu item is the Kyrstal Chick though. I was so mad when they took them off the 5 for $5 menu and hiked the price to almost $3.60 a piece for them...
